PRESIDENT’S

Messagej

It is with great excitement that we share our 2021-22 Annual Report highlighting our many great accomplishments this past year, including: • • • •

Launching a P-TECH program with Rochester Public Schools, Mayo Clinic, and IBM on campus. P-TECH is a private/public partnership geared toward underrepresented students, which allows students to take high school and college coursework simultaneously, while also participating in mentorship work experiences with business/industry. Remodeling existing space and co-located staff from different support service areas to provide services more efficiently and effectively in a one-stop approach in the new Welcome and One Stop Center. Obtaining authority from the Federal Aviation Administration to certify graduates of our Aviation Pilot Program for a restricted Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate. Receiving a $25,000 State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant to support students’ basic needs.

These are just a few of the many great things happening at Rochester Community and Technical College. I encourage you to flip through the pages of this year’s annual report calendar to learn more. Also, stop out to the RCTC Campus to see first-hand the great opportunities that await you on your own educational journey. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff, thank you for your support and consider joining us in writing new success stories in the coming year!

PAST YEAR •

RCTC’s advertising campaign, “We have that,“ earned two Communicator Awards for our agency partner, 25th Hour Communications. The campaign received an Excellence Winner Award for Branding for Integrated Campaign, and an Excellence Winner for Promotional Integrated Campaign.

The Communicator Awards, sanctioned by the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts, are the leading international awards program recognizing excellence in communication across a spectrum of industries, championing effective and meaningful work. •

NursingProcess.Org named RCTC’s Practical Nursing Program as the best in the state again. The organization cites the following three indicators as factors for its rankings: 1. 2.

3.

Average NCLEX-PN First Time Pass Rates of Recent Five Years – 40% of Overall Score Academic Quality (Enrollment Rate, Graduation Rate & Retention Rate) – 30% of Overall Score NursingProcess.org Editorial Staff Ratings and Nursing School Reputation – 30% of Overall Score

Accomplishments & Highlightsj

RCTC was awarded a $25,000 State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant to support its on-campus food pantry, the Hive Supply. RCTC has seen a rapid increase in student use of the Hive Supply over the past year. Each month the Hive Supply continues to set new records for the number of students served. RCTC has been able to reduce the burden of food insecurities for students and their families, but needs additional funding to continue addressing basic needs. Thank you to State Farm for the generous support for the RCTC Hive Supply. As part of their national tour, The United States Navy Sea Chanters performed in RCTC’s Hill Theatre on May 1, 2022. The Sea Chanters are the United States Navy’s official chorus. The ensemble performs a variety of music including traditional choral music, sea chanties, patriotic fare, opera, Broadway, and contemporary music. The Sea Chanters regularly perform for the public in the Washington, D.C. area and throughout the United States while on tour.

RCTC held preview and informational events throughout the 2021-2022 academic year including: 1. 2.

Accomplishments & Highlightsj

The 2021-2022 RCTC Lecture Series kicked off on Thursday, November 4, 2021, with RCTC Philosophy Instructor Brendan Shea, Ph.D., discussing how recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) promise sizable benefits to humanity, but also impose significant risks. “From Killer Robots to Life-Saving Scans: An Introduction to the Ethics of Artificial Intelligences,“ explored some of the ethical issues that arise in the development and deployment of AI. The Lecture Series continued in December with “Water Stories: A Discussion of Rochester’s Most Precious and Vulnerable Natural Resource.“ RCTC’s Environmental Science Program’s Cory Rubin, Ph.D. and Jennifer Rubin, Ph.D., discussed where we get our drinking water, what happens to it when it goes down the drain, and simple ways to help protect our water from pollution. The series concluded with Music Instructor Matt Hafar, Ph.D., presenting “Living and Teaching in Hong Kong: Two Years of Upheaval, Challenge, and Joy,“ on Thursday, March 3, 2022. Dr. Hafar has traveled, taught, and performed all around the world. He returned to campus last fall after a two-year leave where he taught English in Hong Kong, which was in the throes of political unrest, cultural changes, and a global pandemic.

RCTC was one of 16 Minnesota State colleges that partnered with the State of Minnesota to provide emergency Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training for over 400 members of the Minnesota National Guard. Guard members went on to serve in understaffed healthcare centers and assist in long-term care facilities to address staffing difficulties and shortages during a period of heightened need due to the pandemic. RCTC hosted two groups of guard members–the first which began their training in late November 2021 and completed their training December 5, 2021. A second group completed their training in December 2021.

RCTC alumnus Warren Skaaren, ‘66, was a screenwriter for hit Hollywood films such as Top Gun, Beetlejuice, Batman, and Beverly Hills Cop II. The Skaaren Trust—created in Warren’s name— pledged $75,000 to the RCTC Foundation over the next three years for student scholarships. In October 2021, Amon Burton, Trustee of the Warren Skaaren Charitable Trust, met with RCTC scholarship recipients, participated in the RCTC Foundation’s annual scholarship event, memorial display dedication, and the big screen showing of the 1986 box-office hit, Top Gun.

Accomplishments & Highlightsj RCTC was granted authority by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to certify graduates of its Aviation Pilot program for a restricted Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. This certification means that RCTC Aviation Pilot graduates will have the total flight hours required to function as a co-pilot in a commercial airline, reduced from 1500 hours to 1250 hours. The restricted Airline Transport Pilot certification for RCTC Aviation Pilot graduates is even more significant today given recent changes in some commercial airlines’ hiring requirements for pilots. With additional required flight experience, two-year degree applicants can now apply for first officer positions with commercial airlines. Upon completion of RCTC’s Associate of Applied Science degree in Aviation Pilot, graduates will earn a private pilot’s license, instrument rating, airplane single-engine land commercial pilot’s license, and now be eligible to earn a restricted Airline Transport Pilot certificate.

RCTC Art + Design students displayed their work as part of the annual student exhibition. This years’ show, And Yet We Thrive, was open to the public April 26th through May 9th, 2022, and featured students Bari Amadio, Shana DeHoyos, Chantelle Feddersen, Paris Goulette, Grace Guetter, Eric Soleta, Timothy Putzier, and Kate Cornick.

The RCTC Campus and Community Engagement Committee invited two of the authors featured in RCTC’s 2021-2022 common book, “A Good Time for the Truth,“ to present to students and staff. Shannon Gibney spoke in November 2021, and Kao Kalia Yang presented in March 2022. Their lectures were part of a dialog about race and equity in Minnesota. A special thanks to Mayo Clinic who helped underwrite this series.

RCTC was the host campus for the NJCAA DIII National Volleyball Championship. The tournament was held in the Sports Center November 11-13, 2021.

RCTC was the host sponsor for the Rochester Chamber of Commerce’s STEAM Summit on November 16, 2021. This annual student event highlights careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
