May 10. 2018 Graduates, This is a time of celebration as we all join together to acknowledge you and your accomplishment. Your educational journey has no doubt been filled with many hours of sacrifice, persistence, and hard work. Through it all, you never gave up! Now is the time for us to salute you, Rochester Community and Technical College Graduates of 2018! Rochester Community and Technical College is the oldest public two-year college in Minnesota and has been the first stop for people in their educational endeavors since 1915. Tonight you are part of the College’s history by participating in the 102nd commencement ceremony. As you go forth, remember that RCTC is your college, and you are always welcome here. Congratulate your classmates and appreciate the relationships you have built along your journey. This is an excellent time for reflection and to “lean in” to your future. Your relationships and educational experiences have prepared you for productive, responsible, and rewarding lives. This is a milestone and you will always remember this day. Many of you will be entering employment for the first time, others will be embarking on new careers, and some of you may continue your education. Whatever your future holds, be assured that you are about to join thousands of other RCTC graduates who are already serving their communities, states, and nations with distinction. – Ceremonial Objects – The Mace: The mace was initially modeled after a 12th century weapon. In earlier days, the mace, or heavy staff, was borne by, or carried before a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. The mace of Rochester Community and Technical College symbolizes authority to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. The mace will be carried into the ceremony directly after the color guard. This year, the mace bearer is John Somheil, Student Senate Sergeant-at-Arms. The (Presidential) Medallion: A medallion or seal of office worn by the head of an educational institution is a practice that also dates to the Middle Ages. In those times, a seal was used to mark documents as official. Possession of the seal was so important that it was usually worn around the neck for safekeeping. The wearing of the seal eventually became a symbol of authority. Interim President Mary Davenport is wearing the medallion.
– Professional Photography Services – To respect the dignity of the ceremony and allow guests to see their candidates recognized, guests are not allowed on the floor of the Field House and are requested to remain seated. Arrangements have been made with Lifetouch to photograph each candidate during the ceremony. Candidates will be able to view their images online 7-10 days after the ceremony.
