On behalf of the team, coaches, students, faculty, and staff, thank you for your support. I also welcome you to the UCR Regional Sports Center, home of the Yellowjacket women’s and men’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, and a wide variety of athletic competitions and community activities. This beautiful facility is only possible because of the collaborative efforts of RCTC and the City of Rochester. RCTC has a strong history of providing rich, whole-person college experiences typically found at four-year universities, and on our campus students can choose from a variety of student life programs to make connections with other students, develop leadership and life skills, and of course, be part of the most extensive varsity sports program of any public two-year college in the state. 2013-14 Rochester Yellowjacket Basketball Staff Athletic Director—Jean Musgjerd graduated from Bemidji State University, earning both her BS degree in Physical Education (1985) and her MS degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration (1991), along with additional graduate work in health (2007).
For the past twenty-three years Jean has been employed at Rochester Community and Technical College serving as head volleyball coach from 1990-2007, head softball coach from 1994 – 2011, HPER Instructor from 1990 to the present, and athletic director from 2001 to the present. While at RCTC she led two volleyball teams to the NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament and four softball teams to the NJCAA National Softball Tournament. Jean has earned several honors while coaching at RCTC: two-time NJCAA Region XIII Volleyball Coach of the Year, four-time NJCAA Region XIII Softball Coach of the Year, and 2006 NFCA Jr. College Division III Coach of the Year. She also had the honor of coaching 12 NJCAA All Americans and one NJCAA Academic All American. Since 2004, Jean has served as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women’s Region XIII Director and serves on many national/regional/state committees under this title. In 2007, she was named to the softball coaching staff of the NJCAA Elite Softball Team that competed in the World University Game in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2009, Jean received the NJCAA Loyalty Award for her work within the NJCAA at the national and regional levels. Most recently she has been named to the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Executive Committee. While her work keeps her plenty busy, she does find time for a few hobbies such as camping, backpacking, BWCA Trips, and fishing. Since 1997, she also has trained dogs to search for lost and missing people for the Southern MN Canine Search and Rescue Association. Currently Jean has two German Shepherds that are certified to do such work.
As Athletic Director at Rochester Community and Technical College, I want to welcome you on behalf of the faculty, staff, and student athletes at RCTC. We are proud of the rich traditions our student-athletes have built over the years both in the classroom and in competition. Our students-athletes are expected to live by the premise: “You are a student first and an athlete second.” With this in mind, RCTC celebrates with the MCAC All Academic Award Winners each year as well as the students earning Dean’s List recognition each semester. On the court, both the men’s and women’s programs have had a long history of success. Two out of the last three years our men’s basketball program has competed at the NJCAA National Division III Tournament placing as high as second in 2011. On the women’s side we will be celebrating the fifth anniversary of our NJCAA National Division III Title from 2009. Both programs have high expectations as they head into the 2013-2014 season. I would like to encourage you to join us for all of our athletic activities and continue supporting our student-athletes. Steve Hucke – Women’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Hucke, Head Women’s Basketball coach, will be starting his 12th season at RCTC. He comes in with a career record of 203-107, highlighted by winning the 2009 NJCAA DIII National Championship with a 34-0 record. The Yellowjackets have been very successful since Hucke arrived, they have been to the MCCC/MCAC State Tournament eight times, participated in three Regional Championships (winning in 2009), and were State Champions in 2008 and 2009 as well as runner-ups in 2006 and 2007. Steve has been named MCAC Coach of the Year three times and Region XIII and National Coach of the Year in 2009. He has coached five All-Americans, three Distinguished Academic All-Americans, and four Academic AllAmericans, and his teams have been ranked in the top 10 Academically nationally five years and ranked in the Top 10 as a team consistently since 2003. He has had many players continue their careers at a various levels after completing their two years at RCTC. The up-tempo style that the Yellowjackets play is exciting to watch. — Page 3 —
Steve has a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration and Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Upper Iowa University. He has coached basketball at RCTC for 11 years and at the High School Level for five years. He is also the Head Baseball coach at RCTC and teaches in the Physical Education department. Coach Hucke lives in Byron, Minnesota, with his wife Dawn, daughter Danielle, and son Collin.
Greg Polt – Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach enters his third season as Assistant Women’s Basketball coach. He works with the post players and offense and also serves as the conditioning coach. Greg played basketball while attending John Marshall High School. Coach Polt is also the Pitching Coach for the baseball team. He lives in Rochester.
Natasha Hamilton – Women’s Basketball Volunteer Assistant Coach is entering her second
season as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. She works with the guards and helps with recruiting. Natasha is a Southland High School graduate and played basketball at Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She owns her own business and resides in Rochester.

Jason Bonde – Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach enters his fifth year as an Assistant Coach with the
Yellowjackets. He is currently an Academic Advisor in the TRIO program at RCTC. Prior to his time here at RCTC, Bonde was an Assistant Coach at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO. He is a former player at RCTC (2001) under Coach LaPlante and then went to play at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN. He received his BS in Physical Education from Bemidji State and his Masters in Education from Southwest Baptist University. Jason’s family includes his wife Sara and his daughter Faith (6) and Nora 10 months.
Brian LaPlante enters his 18th season as the Head Coach of the Yellowjackets. His overall at RCTC is 312-161. He has had 42 All-Division, 30 All-State and 11 All-Region players in his tenure. 31 Yellowjackets have went on and competed at various four-year institutions in his 17 seasons as Head Coach. Coach LaPlante was named District 4 Coach of the Year in 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2013. His teams have been to the NJCAA National Tournament four times (2006-5th place, 2010-National Runner-up, 2011-National Runner-up and 2013-8th place). The Yellowjackets have won the MCAC State title in 2010, 2011 and 2013 under LaPlante.
Steve Schroeder – Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach enters his tenth year as a Yellowjacket
Assistant Coach. He played basketball for Central Lakes Community College in the mid-90’s and earned his BS in Civil Engineering at South Dakota State University in 1999. Prior to coming to RCTC, Schroeder was the Head Coach at Fillmore Central High School in Harmony, MN. Schroeder has been a very important part of recruiting and defense here at RCTC.
LaPlante has coached baseball, football, and golf at RCTC and was an Assistant Coach at Winona State University in basketball and baseball prior to coming to RCTC. He has a B.S. in Physical Education from WSU (1995) and a Master’s in Physical Education from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (2000). He and his wife Kristin have two children, Sean (13) and Kendall (10). He has 7 brothers and sisters and 18 nieces and nephews.
Matt Christenson – Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach enters his first season as an Assistant
Coach here at RCTC. Prior to his time at RCTC the Northfield, MN native played at St. Olaf University and then coached at Carleton College in Northfield. He brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to RCTC Basketball.

Her family includes her parents and one brother. Major: Nursing. Favorite movie: Meet the Millers; favorite sports team: Miami Heat; favorite food: Chinese. #4 Natalie Reinardy was an All-Conference selection as well as an All-Area, MVP, and Defensive Player. Her family includes her parents and sister. Major: Criminal Justice. Favorite movie: Safe Haven; favorite sports team: Minnesota Lynx; favorite food: pasta. Natalie came to RCTC because it’s close to home and to recover from an injury. #10 Abby Zuhlsdorf was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection and team captain. Academically, Abby was in the National Honor Society, top ten, and All-Academic Team. She was three-time Best Defensive Player and Best Attitude. Her family includes her parents and three sisters. Major: Exercise Science. Favorite movie: Love & Basketball; favorite sports team: Boston Celtics; favorite food: spaghetti. Abby came to RCTC for basketball and school. #12 Addison Cross is a two-time All-Conference selection, MVP, and Academic All-Conference. Her family includes her parents and three siblings. Major: Coaching.
#14 Maren Davidson was MVP, Most Improved, 2nd Team All-Conference, and team captain. She was AllConference in the Social Sciences Department. Her family includes her parents and three sisters. Maren came to RCTC to pair her schooling with Mayo Clinic. #20 Audra Durhman is an All-Conference selection and was team captain. Academically, Audra was on the Honor Roll and in the National Honor Society. Her family includes Rene, Mark, and Steve. Major: Exercise and Rehabilitative Science. #22 Chandra Riedemann was All-Team All-Conference, MVP, and two-year team captain. She was an Academic All-American. Her family includes her parents and younger sister. Her major at RCTC is Sports Management. Favorite movie: The Conjuring; favorite food: dill pickles. Chandra came to RCTC to play sports. #24 Allison Radke was team captain at John Marshall HS. Her family includes her parents and sister. Major: Nursing. Favorite movies: The Conjuring and The Millers; favorite sports team: Minnesota Vikings; favorite food: pasta. Allison came to RCTC because it was affordable and she wanted to live at home. #30 Courtney Hlvaka was team captain at Anoka HS. Her team went to state her senior year. Courtney came to RCTC because it’s affordable. #34 Danielle Adams was an All-Conference selection, Rookie of the Year, and captain. Academically, Danielle was in the National Honor Society. Danielle came to RCTC for the opportunity to play sports. #40 Brittany Ellis was Second Team All-Conference. Her family includes her parents, one brother, and one sister. Major: Graphic Design. Brittany came to RCTC to play ball. #42 Jenna Ness was a three-time All-Conference selection, two-time All-Area in Worthington and two-time in Marshall. Academically, Jenna was on the A+ Honor Roll and All-Academic. She broke most points in her senior year. Her family includes her parents and two sisters. Major: Nursing. Favorite movie: Pitch Perfect; favorite sports team: Minnesota Vikings; favorite food: steak and baked potato. Jenna came to RCTC to be closer to her older sister and for the Nursing program. #52 Liz Norman was team captain and on the B Honor Roll at Stewartville HS. Her family includes her parents. Favorite movies: We’re the Millers, Love and Basketball, and Finding Nemo; favorite sports team: Boston Celtics; favorite food: noodles. Liz came to RCTC to play ball and it’s close to home.
2013-14 OFFICIAL SEASON PROGRAM #1 Robert J. Claypool is an All-Conference selection and All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. Robert was captain of his HS football team, and was also earned Defensive Player and All Hustle awards. He was a member of the Woodbury HS Section Championship teams for 2011-12 and 2012-13. Robert’s family includes his parents Doris Terrel and Robert Claypool. Major: Coaching Diploma and AA degree. Favorite movie: Friday; favorite sports team: Chicago Bulls; favorite food: enchiladas. Robert came to RCTC to play basketball at the best program. #3 Riley Amy was captain of his high school basketball team at John Marshall HS. While at RCTC, Riley was part of the MCAC state championship team and participated at Nationals in 2013. In addition, Riley was on the Dean’s List both semesters in his freshman year. Riley’s family includes his dad Dale, mom Sonja, brother Josh and sister Ariel. Major: Business. Favorite movie: Iron Man; favorite sports team: anything Minnesota; favorite food: Chinese. Riley came to RCTC to be a part of a winning basketball program. #10 Jumah’Ri Turner is an All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-Conference Team selection. His family includes his mom and one sister. Major: Graphic design. Favorite movie: Love and Basketball; favorite sports team: 2000 LA Lakers; favorite food: Chipotle, his mom’s lasagna. Jumah’Ri came to RCTC to win Nationals and be a part of a good winning program. #12 Carnell Williford is a two-time All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. He was a member of the 2013 Conference State team and a member of the 2009 Wisconsin State Team. Carnell’s family includes his parents Carnell and Angela. Major: Fire science. Favorite movie: Glory Road; favorite sports team: Dallas Cowboys; favorite food: shrimp and baked chicken. Carnell came to RCTC to get away and start a new life. #20 Lavar Deshawn McCullough is an All-Conference selection. He was also awarded Defensive Player of the Year. Lavar’s family includes five brothers and one sister. Major: Sports Management. Favorite movie: He Got Game; favorite sports team: New York Knicks; favorite food: any type of pasta. Lavar came to RCTC because he wanted to get better as a player and win a National Championship.

#22 Cory James Speer is a three-time All-Conference selection and one-time All-State selection. He was awarded Mr. Hustle and Team MVP and was part of the Plainview/ Elgin/Millville state championship team. Cory was part of the MCAC state championship team and participated at Nationals in 2013. Academically, Cory was on the Dean’s List during his Freshman year and part of the National College Honor Society. Cory’s family includes his parents Lloyd and Julie and sister Kayla. Major: Law and Society. Favorite movie: Coach Carter, Glory Road; favorite sports team: Minnesota anything; favorite food: any meat and Chinese. Cory came to RCTC to be in another winning program. #23 Rico Gunn is a two-time All-Conference selection, MVP and two-year captain. Rico’s family includes his mother, two brothers and two sisters. Favorite movie: Through the Fire; favorite sports team: Miami Heat; favorite food: Red Lobster’s cheddar biscuits. Rico came to RCTC to win a National Championship and bring out the best that he has to offer. #24 Kelin Johnson is a First-Team All-Conference selection. He was awarded Most Improved Player and Offensive Player of the Year at Whitefish Bay HS. His family includes parents Kevy and Linda. Major: Liberal Arts and Sciences. Favorite movie: I Am Legend; favorite sports team: Whatever team Lebron James is on; favorite food: pepper steak and rice. Kelin came to RCTC to improve both academically and on the basketball floor and to compete on the next level. #30 Mahari Wilson was a captain in his senior year at Minneapolis South HS. His family includes his dad Steve, mom Machelle and sister Nia. Major: Personal Trainer. Favorite movie: You Got Served; favorite sports team: LA Lakers; favorite food: Gumbo. Mahari came to RCTC to win championships and get a great education. #32 Rell Ladd was captain at Duluth East HS. Academically, he was included on the Merit Roll. Rell’s family includes three sisters and three brothers. Major: Business Management. Favorite movie: 42: The Jackie Robinson Story; favorite sports team: OKC, Lakers; favorite food: pizza, pizza rolls, macaroni and cheese. Rell came to RCTC because of the outstanding basketball program and the great coaching staff. He also wants to become a better player. #34 Keiron Sauer is an All-Conference selection and twotime captain at Como Park HS. Academically, Keiron was on the B-honor roll. Keiron’s family includes his dad, mom, three brothers and two sisters. Keiron came to RCTC to win a National title.
YELLOWJACKET BASKETBALL #40 Jeffery Bonds, Jr. is an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection and was captain of his high school basketball team at St. Louis Park HS. His family includes his parents, Mary Cary and Jeffery Bonds, Sr. Favorite movie: 42: The Jackie Robinson Story; favorite sports team: Chicago Bulls; favorite food: pizza. Jeffery came to RCTC to play on a good basketball team and to get better. #42 Chuck Robinson went to high school in Minneapolis. Major: Elementary Education. Favorite movie: Pay It Forward; favorite sports team: RCTC; favorite food: nachos. Chuck came to RCTC to get his Child Development certificate and play basketball. #44 Robert Ben is a three-time letter winner, 1000 point club, all-time leading rebounder, All-Conference winner and All- Conference Honorable Mention winner at Spring Lake Park HS. While at RCTC Robert earned the MVP and Most Improved Player awards. His family includes his parents. Major: AA - Liberal Arts Degree. Favorite movie: Lion King; favorite sports team: Houston Rockets; favorite food: pasta shrimp alfredo. He came to RCTC to be a better player and to play basketball with the best program.

Alex came to RCTC to win a National title. #54 Clay Houfer is an All-Conference selection, senior captain and MVP at Chisago Lakes HS. He also received an Outstanding Academic Award. Rochester Post Bulletin - Jan. 24, 2013 All the hoopla and extra attention isn’t something Rochester Community and Technical College men’s basketball coach Brian LaPlante enjoys. But now it’s over. LaPlante earned the 300th win of his career Wednesday night, guiding his Yellowjackets to a 91-61 victory over Anoka-Ramsey at the Regional Sports Center. “Truthfully, that’s not my comfort zone,” LaPlante said. “I don’t like the attention to be on me. I felt like the kids needed more of the credit for this. It’s not the way I like to do things. But our administration did some very nice things for me, and I was very honored. Plus, I had extra family there, which was nice, and there was a good crowd, so it was a fun atmosphere for our kids.” The game actually didn’t start well for the Yellowjackets. They trailed 25-17 at one point, but LaPlante said they closed the half with a 31-9 run. “We were getting worked over for a bit,” LaPlante said. “Then we decided to play. We kind of figured them out a little bit, made a couple of adjustments. That helped quite a bit. And we finally started figuring out what was a good shot and what was a great shot.” Anoka-Ramsey tried to double-team RCTC big man Joe Beck. That left the Yellowjackets wide open on the perimeter. They launched 32 3-pointers, but made only nine. “We stood around a bit too much and at some point we’re going to need to start knocking those down,” LaPlante said. Despite the double-team, Beck still had a monster game for the Yellowjackets, who led 48-33 at halftime. Beck finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots. Plainview-Elgin-Millville grad Cory Speer had a strong all-around game, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Rico Gunn pumped in 11 points, and Vidal Vance added eight points and three rounds. Every player on the team scored, LaPlante said. RCTC shot 46 percent from the floor and held Anoka-Ramsey to 33 percent. The Yellowjackets’ biggest advantage came on the glass. They grabbed 56 rebounds, while A-R had 34 boards. The Yellowjackets improved to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
