Student Council All students are welcome at Student Council, which takes place monthly. It is the main forum of discussion for the students of UCC and it is attended by all class reps. This is the space where your issues are brought up and dealt with.

About Us…

Who are the Students’ Union (SU)? The SU is every single student of UCC. You are automatically a member and we work for the interests of all UCC students. It’s our job to look after all of your needs and make sure that you really enjoy your time in UCC! This includes everything from giving advice on exams, helping students out with financial concerns all the way to organising the best events across the campus and City for you. You can find out more and follow what we’re up to on our Snapchat (UCCSU), Facebook Page (UCC Students’ Union), Twitter (@UCCSU), Instagram (UCCSU) or on our website www.uccsu.ie. There are 5 full-time Officers in the SU who work throughout the year for the needs of all UCC Students. This means you can give them a shout if you have any problem or question during the year - no matter how big or small! The SU also has 3 permanent staff and a host of part-time officers.

How To Get Involved

There are a few ways to get involved in the SU. Coming into UCC as a first year, the easiest way is to become a Class Rep or an Entertainments Rep - each course has one of each. The Class Rep will let the department know of any problems within the course and will attend Student Council to give feedback to the Students’ Union. The Entertainments Rep organises class parties, nights out, trips away, hoodies for the class and generally makes sure everyone has an unreal time in college!

UCCSU is one of the main entertainment organisers in Cork, with both an Entertainments Manager and a SU Entertainments and Events Officer.

Entertainment reps act as the intermediate between their class and the SU Entertainments Officer. Throughout the year they organise events for their class to You can ask any of the SU officers questions, submit and help each other bond, and also sit on the SU Entertaindebate ideas on SU policies or actions that you want the ments Committee, who organise all the main SU events SU officers to take, make your voice heard on any issue throughout the academic year. or simply find out what is going on in the university.

Entertainment Reps

Keep an eye out for posters, emails and Facebook updates for details, or contact Council Chair, Ali Khan, at councilchair@uccsu.ie for more information.

UCC RAG UCC Rag is about harnessing the brimming energy of 20,000 UCC students, in order to create a madcap year long programme of entertainment and activities. We’re students so we’re young, we’re excitable, we’re looking for stuff to do - what better way to avoid the library than get involved in Ireland’s biggest and best Rag programme? Run by the SU, Clubs and Societies, there’ll be on-campus challenges, off-campus adventures, volunteering with local worthy causes and of course, raising a bucket of money for

charity. UCC Rag will be happening all year long, with the headliner being, of

course, Rag Week, and we’re already planning on making it the most memorable week of the year! Of course, Rag isn’t about us - it’s about you! It’s an unbelievable chance to get involved in college life, so whether it’s collecting money with us, running events or even coming up with your own mad ideas, we’d love to hear from you! Email rag@uccsu.ie, or swing into the SU offices at 54 College Road!

Common Room

The SU common room is located behind the O’Rahilly Building and is attached to the Students’ Union offices. It is a great place for all students to go and chat, have lunch and just generally relax. The Common Room is a large open plan area with sofas, four large screen TVs with SKY+ and PS3s, a pool table, and a kitchen with free tea/coffee making facilities and a microwave. The Common Room is renowned for its lunchtime gatherings and all kinds of activities and social events.

For more information, contact your SU Entertainments Officer, Adam Finn, at ents@uccsu.ie.ie

Ents Crew The Ents Crew are a select group of the most entertainment driven students in UCC. They are the creative heart of all the events that will be going on both on and off campus. The Ents Crew’s work involves planning R&G Week, the Arts Ball, nightclub events and helping with all the fun that occurs on campus. The Ents Crew supports the Entertainments Officer in everything he does, it’s a great experience and you’ll have an incredible time doing it. For more information, contact your SU Entertainments Officer, Adam Finn, at ents@uccsu.ie.ie

Class Reps

Every class gets at least 2 reps - an academic rep to voice educational concerns and attend student council, and an ents rep to organise class parties so everyone can get to know each other. Elections for reps will be happening the start of term and if you’ve any questions just email education@uccsu.ie

Campaigning Like Mad The Students’ Union runs a plethora of campaigns throughout the year and this year is no different with pillar campaigns like SHAG Week, the Student Fees & Grant Campaign, and Mental Health Awareness Week. This year we aim to deliver a wider range of campaigns which impact you as a student from Body Image Week, The General Election Campaign, Keeping Your House Safe, Less Stress More Success, Woman in Leadership and the Stories of Silence. If you want to get involved in Union campaigns or our new campaigns working group through Activist Academy; a facility which is being established to show you the do’s and don’ts of campaigning like how develop a local action, engage with the media and design a vibrant campaign then just give me a shout on deputy@uccsu.ie, because what we’ve got planned needs you.

Voter Registration and The General Election: The General Election is looming, are you registered to vote? Because No Vote means you have No Voice, and if you don’t think it matters to you, then you’re wrong. Think for a second how many of your friends are on grants? How many of you want a graduate job in Ireland at the end of college? Equity in education comes at one cost: getting yourself on the register of electors and the total cost of that is not one single cent. Throughout the year UCCSU will be running on campus voter registration to build on our work last year in collaboration with UCC LGBT* Society when we registered 4,020 students for the Marriage Equality Referendum. Be one of those who stands up for their future; register to change how your government thinks of you and importantly register to protect your right to an education.

SU Welfare Officer Katie is your Welfare Officer for the year and her job is to make sure that we do all we can to make your time in UCC as stress free as possible. she’s your point of contact for any and all non-academic issues. Whether it’s sexual health issues, finance problems or you just need a chat, she’s your woman. Essentially I’m a listening and referral service, no problem is too small and if I can’t help I’ll direct you to the service that can. You can give Katie a shout on welfare@uccsu.ie

Academic Advice Got a problem with your course? We can help! If you’ve a problem with your lectures or tutorials, you’re not sure if you like your course, you can’t find a room or you’re nervous about exams, just email education@uccsu.ie,
