Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the LORD stood beside him and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place—and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” The Word of the Lord

People Thanks be to God

PSALM 103 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul, * and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, * and forget not all his benefits. 3 He forgives all your sins * and heals all your infirmities; 4 He redeems your life from the grave * and crowns you with mercy and lovingkindness; 5 He satisfies you with good things, * and your youth is renewed like an eagle's. 6 The LORD executes righteousness * and judgment for all who are oppressed. 7 He made his ways known to Moses * and his works to the children of Israel. 8 The LORD is full of compassion and mercy, * slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 He will not always accuse us, * nor will he keep his anger for ever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, * nor rewarded us according to our wickedness. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, * so is his mercy great upon those who fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, * so far has he removed our sins from us. NEW TESTAMENT Revelation 12:7-12

13 As a father cares for his children, * so does the LORD care for those who fear him. 14 For he himself knows whereof we are made; * he remembers that we are but dust. 15 Our days are like the grass; * we flourish like a flower of the field; 16 When the wind goes over it, it is gone, * and its place shall know it no more. 17 But the merciful goodness of the LORD endures for ever on those who fear him, * and his righteousness on children's children; 18 On those who keep his covenant * and remember his commandments and do them.] 19 The LORD has set his throne in heaven, * and his kingship has dominion over all. 20 Bless the LORD, you angels of his, you mighty ones who do his bidding, * and hearken to the voice of his word. 21 Bless the LORD, all you his hosts, * you ministers of his who do his will. 22 Bless the LORD, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion; * bless the LORD, O my soul.

War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” Reader The Word of the Lord SEQUENCE HYMN

People THE GOSPEL

Glory to you, Lord Christ. John 1:47-51

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON……………………..………………………...…...……..….The Rev. Richard D. Meadows, Jr. THE NICENE CREED (Please stand) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (Standing or kneeling as you prefer) In the power of the Spirit, and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. Especially for, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, Diocesan Bishop Eugene Taylor Sutton, Asst. Bishop Chilton Knudsen, Our Priest Father Meadows, Father Fallowfield, our Vestry and ministry leaders. Lord, hear us, Lord graciously hear us. By his blood your Christ has ransomed us to you, and has made us a kingdom and priests to you our God. As the angels minister laud and praise you in heaven, strengthen your Church to serve you here on earth. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. When the angels greeted the birth of your Son they sang for joy ‘Glory to God and peace on earth’. Bless with Christ’s peace the people and nations of the world. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. Your Son has promised to your children who look upon your face the care of the ministering angels. Protect by your mercy, our neighbors, families and friends. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. You give your angels charge over those who trust in you to guard them in all their ways. Be with those in trouble, rescue them and show them your salvation. We pray for the members of this church, especially Thomas, Daphne, Vanessa, Wilbur, Keith, Andrew, Ron, Alethea, Clarinda, Sarah, Rachel, Lucy, Josephine, Christina, James, Morgan, Connie, Rosetta, Randy, Conor, and those who are unable to attend regularly. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. Your angel declares ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.’ ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘for they may rest from their labors, for they take with them the record of their deeds.’ Enfold in your love all that come in

faith to your judgment seat in heaven. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us. Father in the name of Jesus, the angels sing by day and night around your throne: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty.’ With Michael, prince of the angels, who contends by our side, with Gabriel, your herald, who brings glad tidings, with Raphael, the protector, who ministers your healing, and with the whole company of heaven, we worship you, we give you glory, we sing your praise and exalt you forever. Amen. Concluding Collect

CONFESSION OF SIN - Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Celebrant and People- Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant - Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. THE PEACE Celebrant -The peace of the Lord be always with you. People – And also with you. (As we greet each other in the name of Jesus, introduce yourself to those around you)

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. (Sanctus Sung by all)

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our

human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People - Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again! We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN. Celebrant - And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. [Alleluia.] Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Today is Back Pack Blessing Sunday – At the offertory our children will come forward with their back packs to be blessed. SMAA - WE CAN HELP: Some of us have feelings of dismay, overwhelm, despair, or anger; we cannot comprehend how so many are hurting. Yet, we are also coming together, in prayer and generosity. That is where hope lies. God is in our coming together, as Church, to respond when our family is in need. The leadership of St. Michael and All Angels has developed a preliminary response and we will be helping an Anglican Church in the Caribbean to recover from the damage. We will tell you exactly how in the near future. In the meantime: 1. Please pray for the people of our country and the Caribbean. 2. Pray that we continue to be blessed. We are blessed, so the we may be a blessing to those in distress.

Icon Exhibit in our Fellowship Hall

Saints: and other Icons

is organized by Father William Fallowfield, in cooperation with The Church of St. Michael and All Angels, Baltimore. The exhibit runs from September 17 th – through the end of the Advent season. In Advent there will four discussions (pre-advent) November 29 th, December 6th, 13th, and 20th, each of those Wednesdays at 1:00 PM. We invite you to bring your lunch. For more information on the exhibition call the church office. An icon is an image of a holy person or event, created by an iconographer who follows the strict standards of the Orthodox Church. They are typically sanctified and blessed by a priest. To the Orthodox believer, icons are more than religious art. They are holy objects. These icons of Orthodox Christianity have powerful stories to ll. Some are believed to have worked miracles—healing the sick or saving a city from annihilation—while others have themselves been saved by the faithful during times of political conflict. They tell stories of the past while illuminating the holy of today.

October 1st, 2017 following our 10:00 worship we will be celebrating the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, with an outdoor cookout in the community garden next to St. Michael House. We are asking you to bring a dish to share and a friend.

Begins Each Sunday @ 10 AM
