With the end of the year quickly approaching, I thought it appropriate to reflect back on the harvest that we just completed. Harvest marks the end of a year for a farmer – sometimes more so than a calendar. It’s the culmination of hard work, stress, and countless hours. Not many occupations allow an individual the feeling of a successful harvest. I thought I’d recap harvest for our multiple regions throughout our customer base. Red River Valley: Harvest went very smooth and quick for the Valley area this year as the ground had dried up from a rather wet spring and summer. This was definitely a welcome change from the past several years, when several customers were harvesting through water and mud early in the season and harvesting corn through snow well into March. The quick harvest has allowed farmers and ranchers the opportunity to get extra fall tillage done, as well as work on water management with their fields which has been hard to do, and even neglected over the past couple years. It’s been nice to see everyone get caught back up again and have the opportunity to look at and improve the condition of their land. Western North Dakota: The harvest in Western North Dakota was nearly ideal as far as the weather. Small grain harvest was a bit disappointing in that the crop looked like a bin buster, but the actual yields and quality didn’t materialize. However, canola, beans, corn, and sunflowers are a bright spot. Yields and quality for the most part have been good. Prices are acceptable and there is a lot of optimism for prices to rise. Northwest (Washington and Oregon): Harvest went very well this year in our Northwest region. We had a record wheat year in term of yields; hay prices remain strong; potato prices are looking good; and corn seems to continue to head in the right direction. As an equipment dealer, we are optimistic about next year, and plan to have an ample supply of equipment for customers ready to purchase. Hats off to all growers on harvest 2011. Farm Rescue Assists 29 Farm Families in 2011 Volunteers arrive from 15 states to help farmers “It’s a win-win for rural communities and agribusiness.”

Thanks to the generosity of RDO Equipment Co. and the many volunteers from across the U.S., nonprofit Farm Rescue was able to assist 29 farmers with planting and harvesting in 2011. Since its inception in 2006, Farm Rescue has helped 160 farm families in need. Farm Rescue saw volunteers arriving from 15 states this year. This was in addition to its core team of dedicated local volunteers “It’s heart-warming to see so many people traveling distances to help farmers in our region,” said Bill Gross, founder and president, Farm Rescue. Among the volunteers was Jack Limke, a Kentucky-based pilot for UPS Airlines who drives to the Upper Midwest with his wife and two children every year to volunteer with Farm Rescue. The family typically spends one month each year planting and harvesting crops for farm families. Volunteering for Farm Rescue is a highlight for Limke, who grew up near Carpio, North Dakota. “It’s a way for us to give back to the rural way of life and to share something truly special as a family,” says Limke.

RDO Equipment Co. provides the equipment and service to ensure that Farm Rescue and its volunteers can get to work helping farm families in need. “RDO Equipment Co. makes itself available 24-7, wherever we happen to be operating, so that we can conduct time-critical planting and harvesting operations for farmers,” says Lowell Rothmann, retired farmer and Farm Rescue board member/volunteer. “The great thing about Farm Rescue is that it provides an avenue for people and businesses throughout the U.S. to join forces and help farmers in our region,” comments Gross. “It’s a win-win for rural communities and agribusiness.” Farm Rescue has finished 2011 harvest operations and is now accepting applications for 2012 spring planting assistance. His seasons pass by planting and harvesting peas, beans, corn, wheat, alfalfa, in addition to a custom farming business. How does this young farmer, with a growing family, manage it all?
