What is “Design_Rhythmic?”
“Design Rhythmic” is what one would characterize as the flow of design. Close your eyes, and follow the rhythmic tempo of your favorite song, and you will undoubtedly come to a complete understanding of the meaning of “Design Rhythmic.” All design rhythym are not equal, as you can obviously tell looking from the portfolio of one designer to the next. But therein lies the excitement — to be able to discover someone’s design rhythmic style. It’s like putting those headphones on, and listening to a new artist’s album for the first time. I welcome you to discover my design rhythm, and through it, maybe you’ll get a sense of what your rhythm is.

Saving Our Classrooms, One Room at at Time.
The purpose of this thesis project is to redesign the public middle school classroom environment to create a more conducive learning environment for the students. Working with already existing spaces, I want to offer assistance to teachers in reorganizing and reinterpreting the space, according to teacher’s and students’ particular needs (as they tend to change with each new year). The primary focus is on the California public middle schools (6-8 grades). The past year, I have studied the way students behave on a cognitive level, interviewed teachers on their teaching styles, and inquired about their specific needs in their classrooms. Many teachers were interviewed regarding what they felt were lacking in classrooms, and what classroom setups worked and what didn’t work for them. Based on their answers I was able to understand what contributed to a more productive learning environment for the students. All the data have gathered and organized into a comprehensive handbook geared towards new teachers, and even seasoned teachers that would like some help in setting up their classrooms.

We Built this City...
·
Richard Dongses
Using the architecture-like letterform of the typeface, Gotham. This project explores the finer qualities of this typeface, through researching a real life city being built from the ground up. What makes this city so special is that it is being built with the desire to leave the smallest footprint possible once inhabited. Everything about this developing city in China screams out “green.” China is trying to make her name known to the rest of the world. I like to think that way of this popular typeface as well. Welcome to Gotham. Sorry, Batman not included.

Mr. Park’s Opus
·
Richard Dongses
“Clay Opus.” Opus is definted to be an artistic work of a large scale. The festival is a celebration of Nick Park’s claymation masterpieces, ranging from his 5 mintue short, Creature Comforts, to full feature length films, such as, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit. This is a film festival celebration of (miniature) epic proportions.

Beyond What is Seen This project takes an in-depth look at the Christian faith in America. It dispells any notion that today’s believers in the Christian faith only stays within their holy huddle, but are social activists and vocal about their belief in God. The book also looks at the histroy of Christian faith in contemporary times, and draws a connection with the past, present, and future.

Walking On Air
·
Richard Dongses
Redesigning the popular Airwalk brand was no easy feat, considering the already large fanbase it has already. But as the company has seen a decline in interest due to what some may call their “sell-out” route, I saw the need to redesign the brand, and infuse back into it a fresh style. It’s all about style and performance. We’re bringing it back to the basics.

Behind Closed Doors
Richard Dongses
Redesigning the popular No Doubt album, Tragic Kingdom, allowed for further exploration with the theme the band played with in their music. “Disillusioned as they enter, they’re unaware what’s behind castle walls.” A quote from their original album, it speaks clearly the idea that we have all been fooled by the slick and shiny exterior of what we believe Southern California to be. The reality? Thin cardboard cut-outs, with little true value or meaning, and decaying lives on the inside... hence the name, Tragic Kingdom.

From School to Church
This book takes a photo narrative approach to documenting the process a medium-size church in Berkeley, CA goes through to set up for church on a typical Sunday. You see, they do not own a church building. Instead, they rent out different venues to hold their Sunday Worship Services. Every Sunday they go through the process of bringing in multiple equipment traliers, and set everything up in a middle school campus. The amazing thing is that the help are all regular church members who volunteer their mornings (to set up) and afternoons (to take down and pack back up into the trailers). Once they’re done, they do it all over again next Sunday.

What does suspense look like?
On tenterhooks. A tenterhook was a hooked device used in the mid-1700s to secure newly woven cloth onto a frame. “On tenterhooks” is an idiom that means to be in a state of uneasy suspense or painful anxiety. This poster was designed based on 17 of Hitchcock’s most suspenseful and well-known films. The image of Hitchcock is comprised of iconic images from each of the films, all of which were hand-illustrated and then vectorized on the computer. The film titles are typeset in the background, and the poster has an overall textured look for a classic and vintage feel.

Dream Come True
·
Richard Dongses
MLK rules. ‘Nuff said. The goal of the project was to design an artifact that includes and updates the famous Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, I have a dream, to present day times. I wanted to convey how this speech was timeless, and the dreams that MLK spoke of in his speech lives on in our country today. They live on not just in laws and in the hearts of men, but also in the normal, everyday things we take for granted around us. The book challenges the reader to see these grand idealogical statements can indeed coincide with our mundane everyday lives.
