EDITOR’S NOTE BRAD THORP
After taking some time and thinking about last week’s column, and how I was spending entirely too much time watching shows about food and cooking, I decided I should really do something about it. Instead of just sitting on the couch, and being passive about my media consumption, I started taking notes and putting them to use in my cooking. I really enjoy cooking, more than just to get a delicious meal out of it. The whole process of it — following the directions, preparing the ingredients, watching over the cooking process and seeing it come to a delicious conclusion — is just so relaxing to me. I can’t say that it is a terrible coincidence that I get to enjoy some, hopefully, tasty food at the end of it, but there is more in it for me than that. Taking the information I have gained through my excessive Food Network viewing, I am starting to become very ambitious when it comes to new recipes and techniques. Now, I’m not saying I’m the next Emeril or anything, but it is a really good feeling when something turns out just the way you wanted it to. A little bit of knowledge in the kitchen can go a long way. Repetition and experimentation are key to the success of your cooking. If I have learned anything, it has been this. Each time I make something, it gets just a little bit better. I have been doing this lately, but I am really excited to start making some new things. I have a stack of recipes I have to yet to try, and am excited each day to see what I can create! Food has a way of bringing people together and I am lucky enough to have friends who trust me to prepare a meal for them, and who come over and have a good time as we cook. During a time when I am away from my family at home, it’s so nice to have good friends come over and create that family atmosphere. They truly do, and I am always grateful for their company. With the nice weather, my cooking style has been revolving around my grill. Now, grilling, to some people, means burgers, brats and hot dogs. Not true. I try and steer clear of these, and look at what else can be done. Kabobs, fish and all types of meats are very good candidates for the grill, and their flavor profiles can really be enhanced by their cooking technique. Don’t be afraid! Try them out and see what you like.

TALK TO BUZZ
This Memorial Day weekend, Sabu’s Fund will be holding an animal art show to help raise money for animals with cancer whose owners are unable to afford treatment. The five-day event will be held on Thursday, May 27, and Friday, May 28, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Saturday, May 29, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Sunday, May 30, from noon to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Monday, May 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Indi Go Artist Co-Op at 9 E. University Ave. in Champaign. With special events such as a silent auction, an animal costume contest, “Pet the Pooches” with a local dog therapy group, and a speaking engagement with Laura Garrett, DVM, from the UIUC’s Oncology Department, Sabu’s Fund promises to be an event that all ages of animal lovers can enjoy, all while contributing to a great cause. The event will also include music, a gourmet animal food bake sale, a raffle and refreshments. “This event will not only raise money, but also awareness,” said Garrett. “Awareness of the availability of advanced treatments for dogs and cats with cancer and of the dedicated pet owners who seek out such treatments.” After Laura Voitik’s own dog, Sabu, lost her four-month fight to stage four lymphoma, she started Sabu’s Fund, which seeks to give other pets a shot at life. Through the Vet Med Donation Page, she plans to give those animals and their families an opportunity for a future after diagnoses. “I want people to take away a greater knowledge of animal oncology,” said Voitik. Still in its beginning phase, Sabu’s Fund will use the donations from this event for its base funds. While they are not currently providing help to those with pets going through treatment, they anticipate being able to soon. To learn more about the event or the organization, check out the Facebook page or email Laura Votik at votik@illinois.edu.

Meet your meat
Local meat artisan discusses the art of charcuterie
Lawrence Mate spends 30 hours a week barbecuing his meat. Photo by Annie Goold
by Emily Siner
When it comes to mainstream meat, Laurence Mate doesn’t approve. He is well-versed in stories and statistics about the maladies of cattle companies and mass-produced beef. In fact, he hasn’t bought meat from a supermarket in eight years.
Some college students agree with his disgust and have become vegetarian for the same reasons. But that’s where Mate’s approach differs. He does not avoid meat — he just makes his own. “I’m passionate about local food, and meat in particular,” the Champaign resident said. “People here eat a lot of meat, but the quality of it is so poor.” Mate’s fascination with charcuterie, the preparation of meat, began about five years ago. On a mission trip in Mississippi, he discovered barbecue, and bought his own smoker to try it at home. Several pieces of Ebay-bought equipment later, he now spends 20 to 30 hours a week curing, smoking and barbecuing about 30 kinds of meat in his basement. “It’s basically just a hobby that got completely out of control,” Mate said.

He invited me to his house for lunch and an interview a few weeks ago, where he offered me a homemade pulled pork sandwich. Like all the meat he cooks, this came from a pig raised on an independent local farm. Although I felt slightly uneasy when Mate started listing facts about this specific animal — apparently, it was a couple years old at slaughter, and I was eating its shoulder — he told me I should be more reassured than disturbed. The pigs he uses have lived happy, healthy lives and produce healthy meat, he said, while the pigs Tyson Fresh Meats raises have been penned up and mass-produce “terrible, unhealthy, flavorless” meat. He believes the purest ingredients make for the best product. “Quality has to be built in at every step,” he said. “If the raw ingredients are this good, your efforts are just going into not screwing them up.” For Mate, this means treating the meat with the same care the farmer treated the animal. He cooked this particular pork shoulder for 12 hours in a maple wood smoker on low heat, and another 12 hours in an oven. He served it with a homemade sauce of caramelized onions, bourbon and maple sugar.
He wanted to sell the meat he cooks, but shirked away when he saw the price tag for certifications and facilities. He was not willing to produce the tens of thousands of dollars necessary to start a meat business. Instead,a year and a half ago, Mate founded This Little Piggy, a private, non-profit club, for food artisans in the area. Members donate money to the club and exchange their own homemade food. Mate does not earn much with this sort of payment. He estimated he makes about 25 cents per hour, plus free bacon, between picking up, cooking, packaging, delivering and blogging about the meat. But Mate does not do this for the money. He is passionate about artisan cookers around CU sharing their products. “I care so much about local foods that I want to do what I can to make them possible,” he said. And, like any good cook, Mate enjoys hearing friends rave about his food. His charcuterie has pushed many a supermarket-going carnivore away from mass-produced meat. “I have people say, ‘I used to be perfectly happy eating supermarket bacon; now I can’t eat this crap,’” he said. Going to catch some sunny at the Arb. BRB.
soaking up the cu buzz suggests some places for summertime fun
While campus life may have cooled down, CU certainly hasn’t. With warm weather setting in, local residents feel compelled, now more than ever, to step out into their surrounding community and soak up the sun. Fortunately, buzz has several places in mind when it comes to keeping busy this summer.
by Rebecca Halleck
Sholem Aquatic Center » 2205 Sangamon Dr., C.
U. of Illinois Observatory » 901 S. Mathews Ave., U.
Radio Maria » 119 N. Walnut St., C.
Located in Champaign, Sholem is not your average neighborhood pool. In fact, it boasts anything a summer pool goer could want, including a lazy river, a diving well and two water slides. Providing the perfect spot to cool off this summer for any age group, its special toddler wading area and tube slide make this spot especially family-friendly. “The Sholem Pool is a great place to go in the summer because you can bring the whole family, and the water slides are wonderful for younger kids,” said Haley Hix, who has been a member for the past five years. Fortunately, they have something for nearly every other age group as well. For lap swimmers, there is an eight-lane divided pool and special early bird hours that allow for uninterrupted bouts of fitness. Also, for sunbathers, there are grassy slopes and numerous lounge chairs for laying out. From personal experience, the lazy river is also a relaxing way to work on your tan.
Named a National Historical Landmark in 1989, the University of Illinois’ famous observatory attracts both serious astrologists and simple stargazers alike. The observatory, once known for housing the research of noted scientists Joel Stebbins and Robert Baker, has now opened its doors to the general public. When classes are in session, the observatory is usually reserved for astrology students and members of the University’s Astronomical Society, except for the first Friday of the month, which is open to the public—permitting that the weather is favorable for seeing stars. The observatory is a great place to take a date or just to enjoy the heavens when it’s a little warmer outside, but the best part is viewings and tours of this historical landmark are free.
This Champaign hot spot isn’t exactly somewhere to cool off from the summer heat. On Saturday nights, this downtown restaurant and bar on Walnut Street turns up the heat and the volume with salsa dancing. Brad Carlson, a bartender at Radio Maria, said that although “all different types of people come,” they have quite a few regular attendees who are advanced, to say the least. Though salsa night has been a weekly occurrence for about two years now and has attracted a “good following,” no matter how big the night gets, Carlson said they like to “keep the same bartenders and staff to maintain the familiar feel.” A staple in the Radio Maria schedule, he said “every night is something different,” including a request-only DJ on Thursday and happy hour specials, including free appetizers if you buy a drink on Friday.

If you’re looking for a relaxing night with great burgers and even better music after a long day of work, classes or strenuous sun bathing, The Iron Post is the perfect Urbana hotspot for you. With live music and artists ranging from jazz to bluegrass to fiddle-players there is sure to be an event for everyone. That might be why Paul Wirth, owner of the Iron Post, said their patronage consists of anyone “20 to 60, from bikers to bankers, it just depends on the artist.” But despite nationwide and even international artists, the Iron Post is still “a casual neighborhood bar famous for its burgers and French fries.”
For the wine connoisseurs of the CU, forget expensive trips to Napa Valley, just East of Champaign lies the quaint and inviting Sleepy Creek Vineyard. With events like the Salt Fork River Art Fest and their summer concerts, Sleepy Creek is anything but sleepy. Dawn Taylor, co-owner of Sleepy Creek, is especially excited for the Salt Fork River Art Fest, which sells local artists’ work and donates the proceeds to the Prairie Rivers Network, an organization that helps protect Illinois rivers and streams. Taylor said that last year the festival earned over $1000 by displaying “high quality arts and crafts.” She also said it’s one of her favorite events because “it attracts a different crowd than the vineyard usually sees.” But you don’t have to wait until the Fest to visit; every Friday the Vineyard lights up a campfire and provides free hot dogs for wine purchasers.
The Harvest Moon Drive-In Theater steps a bit more outside of the typical movie-going experience. Luckily, this hidden treasure of central Illinois is located just a half an hour away in Gibson City. Why not then take advantage of the weather and drive, windows down, to see whatever summer movie strikes your fancy? For six dollars, you can see back-to-back movies, but because the line-up changes daily, it’s best to call or check their website to see what shows are playing. Most importantly, be sure to come hungry, but forget the popcorn. Harvest Moon has a range of snacks available at their concession stand that would put most traditional theaters to shame, including burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, nachos and the list goes on. No summer is complete without days spent lounging in the sun or filling up on all the sights, sounds and tastes the CU has to offer. From days of family fun to hot nights on the dance floor, all age groups and types can find something to do on the streets of Urbana and Champaign. buzz

Music sets the mood
by Justine Chan by Jeremy Lin If anyone knows anything about the future of music, it has got to be The Fantastic Plastics. With their awesome indie blend of Nintendomeets-’80s New Wave sound of synthesizers and old TVs bursting the stage, and 2001: A Space Odyssey mixed with Evel Knievel outfits, this dynamic Champaign-based duo leads the way to something truly brilliant. Be sure to catch The Fantastic Plastics along with El Fuego and JET W. LEE at Mike ’n Molly’s outdoor stage on Sunday, May 30 at 8 p.m. buzz: What is your inspiration behind the music? Tyson Markley of The Fantastic Plastics: I guess, isolation — being part of the rat race. Dylan [Stanford] and I co-write all of our songs. I write most of the music and I email it to Dylan, and then he’ll write the rest, or it works the other way around and it’s always a lot of back and forth over email. But, once a month, we’ll get together and rock out. buzz: What is the story behind the band getting together? TM: [Dylan and I] became friends through music. Dylan did a lot of videotaping and video installations for my old band, and we just have good musical chemistry. We dress up like robots and Dylan does all the TV stuff. We have a TV that has shows an eyeball, and another one that’s always changing, and another one that looks like an Atari game. buzz: What have been some of the band’s major challenges?
Image used with permission from the band
TM: The long distance thing is definitely a challenge. Dylan lives out in Bloomington, which is an hour away, but we both have crazy lives, so it’s hard to get together often. Sometimes it just gets hard to work through email, but we try to work it out. buzz: What are some of your influences? TM: Definitely, Devo and Depeche and video games — all the music. buzz: Which video games? TM: Oh, Super Mario Bros., Zelda — all the old classics. Dylan and I were kids when the games all came out and we just grew up with it. You know, the songs just repeat and repeat ... buzz: Have you released any CDs? TM: Not yet. We do this thing called the Single of the Month Club where we release a new song every month, and people can go onto our website and download it. It’s all for free and we haven’t done it in a while, but we’re going to start it again. buzz: What are you trying to accomplish with your music? TM: We’re just trying to create the dance party of the future.

QUICK PICK ALBUM reviews ARTIST:
LCD Sound System
Album:
This Is Happening
James Murphy drags out the malice again in This is Happening, his third — and said to be his last — LCD Soundsystem installment. Viciously self-deprecating and shockingly unrestrained in its cynicism, the album succeeds because of Murphy’s ability to craft alluring disco and rock sensibilities for a contemporary audience that wants exactly the no-bullshit, tongue-in-cheek, yet oddly heartfelt self-awareness that he’s so good at conveying. The first released single, “Drunk Girls, sounds like a sequel to Sound of Silver’s major commercial hit “North American Scum, with its addictive combination of fiercely driven techno instrumentation and Murphy’s screeching mockeries. Other notable tracks include the compellingly sincere “All I Want and the ridiculous “Pow Pow, with its self-conscious monologues, shouting mantras and gliding electronic features. This is Happening is a much-needed wake-up call to those exhausted with perpetual cycles of celebration and disappointments. — Eli Chen ARTIST:
The Fresh Kills
Album:
Turn Up the Brillance
The Fresh Kills emerged on the CU scene as a melodic punk band, known for their high-energy live shows and attention to detail. This same focus is represented on their first full-length release, Turn Up the Brilliance, which sees a blend of fast punk riffs, catchy hooks and shout choruses. Unlike many other local punk acts, The Fresh Kills are not limited to sloppy recordings, fast punk riffs and simplistic bass lines. With every song, the band shows a high dedication to quality and musicianship. Songs like “Don’t Turn Your Back and “Stand Your Ground exhibit clean and crisp bass lines along with a solid drum beat. Standout tracks, “Before The Storm and “We are The Young, utilize everything that was once good about pop-punk. This album is not merely a collection of songs, but a well-integrated list of tracks that lead perfectly from one to another. This album has you in a frenzy one moment and then a danceable groove the next, causing The Fresh Kills to become the most exciting punk band in CU. — Adam Thie
Like a lot of people, music plays a big part in my everyday life. I have different types of music for different parts of my life. Some types of music instill calmness in me; other types let me focus on my work. Let’s start with the basics: everybody does homework. When I do homework, I’ll choose from operatic metal, metalcore or random Spanish songs. I don’t know why, but operatic metal makes me concentrate. I’m talking bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation and Delain. I think it’s something about the melodic voices of the female vocalists that keep me concentrating on my homework. With metalcore, the constant pounding and chugging of the guitars help me stay focused on what I’m doing. With Spanish songs, I like having bands like Mana just for background noise. Work hard, party hard. Going around campus, I’ve heard a lot of music played at parties. However, the most common songs that I’ve heard seem to be pop songs, rap songs and techno. One of the things that these songs have in common is they all have heavy bass — house-shaking, thumpin’ bass. Music definitely sets the mood for the party: slow music for dancing, fast music for raving and jumping around. With summer comes relaxation. I love sitting in a lawn chair on my patio with my laptop on a table, just chilling. When I chill, I listen to a mix of upbeat songs and slow, relaxing songs. The artists I listen to include: Taylor Swift, Jason Mraz, Reel Big Fish, 3OH!3 and Maroon 5. These artists are pretty relaxing; they’re not too fast and bouncy, nor are they too slow that it gets depressing. Speaking of summer plans, I plan on exercising and working out a lot. When I work out, I need music that will keep me pumped up and motivated to keep going. Songs with inspiring lyrics or epic-sounding choruses help keep me going — I like to feel like the world is cheering me on, pushing me to give a hundred and ten percent. My workout playlist includes “Eye of the Tiger by Survivor and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk. Music just shows up randomly in my life. Last fall, when the ladybugs invaded campus, my room was overrun by the little critters. My solution to this problem was to open a can of whoop-ass, turn on the song “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor by Drowning Pool, and I just went to town. Music also helps accentuate the atmosphere. During the holiday season, my roommate and I will put on Christmas carols and the room would instantly become livelier and happier. My life might seem like it’s centered around music. I disagree. Instead, I believe that music just helps emphasize whatever I am doing, wherever and whenever I’m doing it. I listen to different types of music when I do different things. My point: music helps set the mood — try adding more music into your everyday life.

Lost finale brings the good, the bad and the ‘WTF?’
by Katharine O’Brian

fter months of anticipation and build up, the Lost finale finally came and went. The season, overall, was a rocky one, spending too much time on build up and not enough on actual explanation. A good five episodes probably weren’t even necessary. The best episodes were those devoted to Richard Alpert, and the development of Jacob and the Man in Black. In the grand tradition of Lost, though, they saved the showdowns and conclusions for last. There was a lot to like about the Lost finale. Suckers everywhere were thrilled that all the favorite couples were finally together. The alternate world thing might have been confusing for the entire season, but it did allow for happy endings. Claire and Charlie, Jin and Sun, Sawyer and Juliet, and Kate and Jack are all together now, and that’s wonderful. The emphasis on love conquering all is nice, but I’m sure tons of people rolled their eyes every time some remembered the island or kissed their sweetheart. Also, if love was presented as the ultimate unifying fac-
tor, why did Desmond get to be with Penny, but Locke was alone? That nice Helen lady could have come along to the island church party. And, in what universe would Sayid end up with Shannon? He spent multiple seasons pining and killing because Nadia died. He almost killed Desmond so he could get her back. And we’re supposed to believe that in this heaven they all supposedly created, Shannon was the person he wanted to spend eternity with? No way. I don’t think anybody was jumping up and down about that coupling, and if you were, shame on you. I also liked that Hurley was ultimately the candidate all along. Everybody knew it had to be Jack, but it ended up being the guy who never wanted to lead. Hurley was always such a great character, and he deserved such a position of importance. In traditional Hurley fashion, he gave Ben yet another chance at redemption, and this time, he took it. Ben was a mess, but Hurley was the coolest guy ever. They’d work well together.
defend a movie
One element of the last season that I loved was the conflict between Jacob and the Man in Black. It was intriguing and enjoyable to watch, and it allowed us to find out about Richard Alpert and the island itself. However, I think the Jacob/M.I.B. episode should have come sooner. They should have wasted less time in that temple and spent more time on the two of them. Introducing the light cave so late in the game also made me feel a little cheated. The most glaring problem that I had with all of this was how the conclusion negated a lot of the last six seasons. I think we’re supposed to assume that the island events were real, but the alternate world was a sort of purgatory. That lessened what happened on the island to focus on the alternate world that I really never cared about. It was only introduced this season. Despite what they may say to the contrary, the producers obviously didn’t know where they were going with this when they started. That’s fine. Plot holes and loose ends were always expected. But the purgatory world was presented as an end that the show was building to all along. If this was really what we were supposed to be anticipating, then why did we watch so many seasons of Dharma Initiative crap? There was an entire season of button pushing. Why? Why were the Others so important? Why could women not give birth to babies conceived on the island? Why was an entire season devoted to jumping through time and blowing up a bomb that apparently did nothing? I’m not satisfied. This last season kept my interest, but it didn’t satisfy six seasons worth of curiosity. I liked the finale, and I liked the happy ending, but I also think it was cheap. For a show that spent so much time working both the minds and heartstrings of its viewers, the finale ignored the mind and went straight for the heart. Still, at least it wasn’t all a dream.

As the loyal followers of my “Week Aheads” will tell you, I am a huge fan of jazz music. The Boneyard Jazz Quintet specializes in all the different genres of jazz, from swing to Latin. If you go to this, be warned: I will be whipping out the Jitterbug and the Charleston like it is nobody’s business. DOIN’ IT WELL
by Jo SangEr and Ross Wantland
Withholding Withdrawal “Doin’ It Well” is used to controversy; sometimes our columns get us into hot water with colleagues or community members. Each week, we weather the storm and continue to find ways to empower people about their sexuality; provide the most accurate, up-to-date information; and support positive and healthy sexual interactions. This week is no different: we want to talk about how “pulling out” could be a useful form of pregnancy prevention. We state, for the record, that using withdrawal as a method of birth control isn’t the most effective choice. But, according to new research and depending on a couple’s options, it just might be. Withdrawal is NOT A Method of Birth Control!?
Pulling the penis out of the vagina prior to ejaculation has been practiced for centuries as a pregnancy prevention tactic. Heck, even Onan — the guy in the Bible who “spilled his seed” so he didn’t impregnate his dead brother’s wife — knew this stuff could work. Yet, sexuality educators and medical providers alike have maintained that it is not an effective method of birth control, and often discourage its use; some liken pulling out to no method at all. Other sexuality researchers and experts, along with couples trying to avoid pregnancy, disagree, advocating that pulling out should be discussed along with other forms of contraception with similar effectiveness ratings. A

study published last year in Contraception cites studies published in both Contraception and Contraceptive Technology that show that, theoretically, four percent of couples using withdrawal will become pregnant within one year. Actual or typical use of withdrawal boosts the risk of pregnancy over the course of a year to eighteen percent. Surprisingly, withdrawal is only slightly less effective compared to theoretical and typical effectiveness rates of male condoms (perfect use of condoms = two percent failure rate, typical use = seventeen percent failure rate). A Learned Skill
In 2002, the National Survey of Family Growth found that 56 percent of American women (15-44 years) had used withdrawal at least once in their lives. A 1991 report from Population Action International estimated that withdrawal was the third most popular method of birth control used worldwide (behind the IUD and the pill). The rhythm method and the shot (injection) followed withdrawal. It’s interesting to note that some people also believe that the rhythm method is not effective in preventing pregnancy and young people should not be taught to rely on this. The reality is that, much like pulling out, the rhythm method involves an understanding of the body’s reproductive system and requires work (monitoring body temperature and vaginal discharge, etc.) to be used successfully.
Controversy about pulling out With withdrawal, the male has to time it correctly to pull out prior to ejaculation. Because this involves a learning curve and the male’s partner can’t tell him when he should withdraw, the risk of pregnancy may be higher for a less experienced person. Education Interruptus
Young people are consistently told that withdrawal is not an effective method of birth control, yet, often, no other methods are placed in their hands to use. Access to more reliable methods due to income, stigma, religious practices, transportation or proper education is often limited for people, regardless of their age (although young people suffer the most when it comes to reproductive health issues). The message here is that if you don’t know how to have sex (through comprehensive sex education), then you won’t have sex. Unfortunately, research continues to disprove that this approach helps prevent anything. And it may be that, in our effort to empower young people, sexual health advocates are guilty of the same attempts to control their behavior: “We won’t tell you about the benefits of withdrawal because we want you to use a ‘real’ method like condoms or the ring.”
birth control such as condom use or the rhythm method. This “combination method” definitely increases effectiveness of pulling out. Also, withdrawing is always available (you can take it with you), your parents won’t find it and it’s free. Additionally, partners report feeling close to the person they are with because there is not latex or other barrier between them. Cons without Condoms
Pros of Pulling Out
The downside of “pulling out” is the obvious risk for STDs and pregnancy. Also, using only withdrawl puts one person, the male, in sole control of pregnancy prevention. And, while there is no conclusive data to confirm the presence of enough sperm in pre-cum to cause a pregnancy, that small amount of fluid can definitely contain STDs! In addition, the male needs to pull out and ejaculate far enough away from the vaginal opening to avoid the risk of sperm swimming into the vagina. Each person or couple needs to decide which method or combination of birth control methods are best suited for them. Get educated and be confident about your pregnancy prevention plans. Check us out next week as we give a high five to TAG!
It has been found that many couples who use withdrawal combine it with another method of

You don’t know? But what if you did know?
FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES
(March 21-April 19) Mozart once challenged his friend Haydn to play a harpsichord piece he’d written. Haydn tried, but stopped partway through when the musical score called for him to play a note in the middle of the keyboard even though his right hand was fully occupied at the high end and his left hand at the low end. “Nobody can play this,” protested Haydn. “I can,” said Mozart, who proceeded to perform the piece flawlessly, dipping down to play the problematic note with his nose. In the coming week, Aries, be inspired by Mozart as you not only cover the extremes but also take care of the center.
TAURUS
(April 20-May 20) If you’ve ever contemplated taking a trip to Bora Bora or Pago Pago, now might be a good time to actually go. That’s because you’re in a “seeing double” phase -- a time when magic will come through repetition, and via duplication, and while you’re in the throes of imitation. To take maximum advantage of the dualistic cosmic rhythms, don’t seek just one of anything. Don’t do anything just once. Two is where the power lies. Pairing brings potency.
GEMINI
(May 21-June 20) My favorite news source, The Onion, recently reported on a “free-thinking cat” that excretes its wastes “outside the box.” As you enjoy your own phase of liberated thinking and uninhibited action, Gemini, I hope that you’re putting the emphasis on generating beauty and blessings “outside the box.” You will of course also have to make some messes as you tamper with the way things have always been done, but even they could turn out to be productive in the long run.
CANCER
(June 21-July 22) Are you slipping into one of those moods in which you feel like a fraud? Are you starting to worry that maybe you’re not who you say you are? If so, I want to remind you of what happened the last time these feelings got stirred up: You became super motivated to prove that you are indeed who you say you are. And that had a most wonderful effect, didn’t it? It led you to locate and call on resources you hadn’t known you could have access to; it spurred you to purge some self-deception from your system; and it roused you to intensify your commitment to rigorous authenticity. How about an encore?
LEO
(July 23-Aug. 22) I’m a compassion freak. Empathy is a fetish of mine. My predilection is to comfort the afflicted, champion the underdog, and fight for the rights of people who have been given less than I. And yet there’s also a part of me that’s a pagan libertarian anarchist. I subscribe to the idea that pretty much any kind of behavior is fine and good as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. Now that you Leos are in the “anything goes” phase of your astrological cycle, this fullpermission part of me is rising to the forefront, eager to encourage you to go for broke, take it to the limit, and get away with everything you can get away with -- on one condition, which is that it doesn’t harm anyone, including you.
VIRGO
(Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Snake charmers are still a fixture in many Indian cities. Moving rhythmically and playing a flute-like instrument, they influence erect cobras to bob and sway as if dancing. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you now have the power to do the metaphorical equivalent of that magic trick. This is one of those rare times when you possess the mojo to direct and even control strong forces that may usually be too wild to tame. You’ve still got to be careful, though. Just because you’ve got the power doesn’t mean that you can scrimp on preparation and discipline.
LIBRA
(Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s time to think comprehensively, not defensively . . . to see futuristically, not didactically . . . to fantasize fantastically, not diplomatically. Your assignment is to stop reacting to every little blip that leaps into your field of vision,

and start surveying the long-term cycles of your life from an expansive vista. Be a proactive visionary, Libra. Be a high-minded explorer. Weave all the disparate threads into a tapestry that reveals the big picture. The next phase of your liberation requires you to slough off petty concerns and trivial details.
SCORPIO
(Oct. 23-Nov. 21) “Never” has never been a more irrelevant word for you. Events that may have always seemed quite improbable are now well within the range of possibility. Exotic people who up until recently may as well have been fictional characters are showing up as real live actors in your actual life story. Plotlines whose emergence you could not have predicted are snaking their way into your drama. So be alert for a freaking miracle concealed in a flimsy disguise. And don’t be surprised if a vision of funky paradise shows up in full regalia. The future’s not just knocking at your door, it’s pounding.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarian writer Samuel Clemens was best known under his pen name, Mark Twain. But he tried many others, including Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass, W. Epaminondas Adrastus Blab, Trismegistus, and Sergeant Fathom. Since you’re in a phase when experiments with your persona would be productive, I suggest you dream up a few aliases of your own. I hope that at least one of them will be as wacky as “Blab” or “Snodgrass.” Having a sense of humor about yourself will be helpful. It will ensure that your explorations at the frontiers of your identity will be fertile, fun, and never fear-based.
CAPRICORN
(Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’re not living in Iraq or Sudan or the Congo, and you don’t have to walk five miles a day with a jug on your head to fetch the water you need, and you’re not so bereft of food that you have to resort to eating worms and tree bark. So how bad could your problems be? The single best thing you can do to start fixing your life’s small glitches is to feel waves of gratitude for how many resources you have and how lucky you are. The second best thing would be to aggressively take your worried attention off yourself and turn your mind toward people who could really benefit from your help. As you carry out those two assignments, your dilemmas will begin to solve themselves as if by magic.
AQUARIUS
(Jan. 20-Feb. 18) There’s a bothersome phenomenon that mucks up reincarnation research: Far too many people profess to have been celebrities and geniuses in their previous lives. A related and equally irksome issue is the problem of multiple claims. For example, I know three different people who have assured me they were Napoleon their last time around. The fact is, almost no one who’s reading this horoscope has never been famous in any past incarnation. However, it is worthy to note that a disproportionately high percentage of you Aquarians were formerly people with great imaginations. And it so happens that in the coming weeks you will be at the peak of your ability to tap into the creativity you had back then.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) When I sent out my email newsletter last week, I got the usual number of automatic replies from people who were on vacation or out of the office. But one from Lisa P. caught my attention. “Can’t reply to your email right now,” it read. “I will be meditating until June 1.” My first reaction was jealousy. “I want to have the leisure time and willpower to meditate for 14 days non-stop!” I thought to myself. I pictured myself free of all business-as-usual, even meditating while I was asleep. My second reaction was that I should tell you Pisceans about what Lisa P. was up to. The coming days would, after all, be an excellent time for you to retreat from the usual flood of chaos and seek peaceful sanctuary in a conversation with eternity. If you can’t manage a whole week, try to give yourself at least 48 hours of profound and utter slack.

AND ANOTHER THING ...
by MICHAEL COULTER
Living the Life Aquatic What you don’t want to know about public pools When I was growing up, we had a swimming pool in the backyard. Yeah, I know, it sounds pretty classy. It may have actually been classy if any of the drunken rednecks that used the pool on a regular basis wore anything besides cutoff jeans to swim. So, it might not have been classy, but either way, it was really awesome. It was cool just swimming around. It was just fine lying on a raft. Hell’s bells, it was even sort of great to just stand in the water on a hot day. I didn’t even have to share this pool with the general public, which may be the reason I spent so little time in the hospital as a child. As with any pool, you need accessories. Some are necessities, like a filter and a net with a long handle. Other things are optional, yet super handy, like 30 huggies to keep the beer cold, three or four volleyballs in case you feel the urge to pop somebody in the face, and a pair of flippers you’ll never notice anyone using. We also had what every pool has, a humorous sign that encourages pool visitors not to turn our swimming hole into a public sewer. You’ve seen those sorts of signs before. “We don’t swim in your toilet, so please don’t pee in our pool.” Wow, effective and hilarious. The signs usually never mention poop, so I’m only left to assume that you’re all systems go when it comes to that kind of thing. Our particular sign said, “Welcome to our OOL. Notice there’s no P in it. Please keep it that way.” Geez Louise, do people really have to be that diligent to keep others from peeing in a pool? These signs, while absolute comedy gold, probably weren’t even all that useful. I’m guessing the sort of person who violates the simple rule of not urinating in shared water likely isn’t the kind of person who would be a big reader of warning signs. I remember back then, my mom tried to police for this as best she could.
It apparently wasn’t just my friends. A recently released government report showed that, two years ago, one in eight public swimming pools were shut down because of dirty water or equipment that didn’t function properly. It was based on checking 120,000 pools in parks and hotels. Kiddie pools were found to be the most, um, let’s just say disturbing, with problems ranging from improper chlorination to excessive fecal matter. I’m not sure they need to have the word “excessive” anywhere in the sentence. I’m from the school of thought that believes even a drop of fecal matter that is in the water I’m standing in is excessive. Call me an idealist, but there really shouldn’t be an “acceptable amount of fecal matter.” Man, I’m really glad we had our own pool growing up. It sounds ridiculous, but I can at least take comfort in knowing I was wallowing around in familiar urine, and that I can’t remember any of my friends crapping in the pool. Small pleasures. Even then, I’d go to the public pool every so often, and even before I knew about all the fecal matter, it kind of creeped me out. Sure, there were hot, older girls in skimpy swimsuits that I could stare at, but such a thing hardly makes up for splashing around in fecal/urine bisque. We would have been better off swimming in a lake. At least you know it’s probably full of bad things. It’s not pretentious like a pool, giving you the idea that it’s this pristine oasis. Obviously, since the report mentions many of the problems are in the kiddie pool, I think we should maybe begin there if we are to eradicate this scourge. If you’re putting your kid in a pool, watch them very closely. I’m sure concern for your child is probably a nice theory that doesn’t really work for many, but let’s pretend people are responsible, just for now. Even if your kids are too young to understand, tell them not to pee in the freaking pool. Most kids get that look right before they go anyway, so if you see them making a pee face, get them out of the damn pool. You can house train a freaking dog in about three days. A child should be no different. Swimming is really fun and I encourI remember back then, my mom age everyone to do it. I would also like to encourage everyone not to abuse everytried to police for this as best she one else’s water. Besides being just plain could. Anyone who stood still nasty, it can even make others ill. We can’t smoke in bars anymore, because for over ten consecutive seconds it’s dangerous. We have to use seat immediately became a suspect. belts, because cars are dangerous. We pass laws for all kinds of things that are Anyone who stood still for over ten consecutive supposed to keep us safer, and yet no one is clampseconds immediately became a suspect. In all ing down on the apparent spree of people peeing fairness, most of my buddies were suspects in pools. I’m not sure what a fitting punishment for the moment they set foot on the deck. This is such a crime would be. Maybe the punishment is because many of them bragged about peeing nothing more harsh than making the offending perin the public pool on a regular basis. Even our son continue to swim in the pool — cruel, unusual guest list was classy. and really fun, all at the same time.
