“Well, I guess this is growing up,� the ineffable Mark Hoppus once sang. Getting older is as weird as hell. You never really change or mature, but everyone starts to treat you better and give you more responsibility (I still love blink-182 yet they put me in charge of this magazine LOL). The more I live, the more I also notice how often things repeat: the names, dates and details may change, but the trajectories of friendships and relationships stay pretty constant; annual events like Pygmalion or Ebertfest (peep this week’s cover) are over too soon, but return in no time at all; and every April, as summer’s flirtation teases the end of the semester, it becomes gradually more difficult to make it to class each week. This year feels a little different, though. Many of my friends are seniors on the cusp of graduating, and the talk of jobs, internships and grad school is simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating. I was eating lunch with some friends this week when some freshmen walked past. Somebody asked, “When did we become the older kids?� as our age and collective jadedness made us seem much cooler than we really are. The changes you do undergo as you get older are so gradual, you never even notice. Way back in my first month living in the dorms, my friend Evan and I decided to visit Twice Is Nice. I remember thinking Elm Street was so far away from campus and Allen Hall (LOL) as we waited for the bus, rode it for 20 minutes, then walked another couple blocks. It seemed like quite a trek at the time, but now I have friends who live “nearby� on Elm. Whereas Urbana once seemed so vast and unknowable, the realm between Lincoln Avenue and Vine Street is now as familiar to me as the dialogue during any given lightsaber duel. Growing up is weird. Some people are better at this growing up thing than others. Mark Hoppus and his bandmate, Tom DeLonge, are actually excellent examples of this: when blink first started out, Tom and Mark were best buds. On the same level in seemingly every way, their vulgar banter lent the bad demos and even worse performance ability an odd charm. Everything was going fantastic, then the hiatus hit. I think most fans will agree with me on this: blink-182 should not have reunited. Their legacy was established, there was a brand new (+44) record in the works, things were right with the world. Since the reunion, things have gone downhill significantly – and Mark and Tom know it. With each release, they promise things will be better, but they never are. It doesn't seem to bother Tom – he has Angels & Airwaves, after all – but in every interview, Mark looks miserable. Poor guy. I guess that's growing up.

But is it humanly possible to visit Target and not buy miscellaneous stuff? P.S. Happy 21st, Nick Pags!

» Easter Sunday: What a lovely day to celebrate 420. I'm pretty thrilled.

SWEET DREAMS BY LAURA MURPHY Dreams can lead to extraordinary things. For example, Mary Shelley’s idea for her famous novel “Frankenstein” came to her in a dream. In order to make your dreams come true or keep them from becoming realities, the first thing you need to do is figure out what they mean, and the Dream Hotline is here to help! On Friday, April 25, Urbana’s School of Metaphysics is hosting its 26th Annual National Dream Hotline. The School of Metaphysics is a nonprofit organization that teaches people how to properly interpret their dreams, meditate, etc. so that they can live healthy and happy lives. The Dream Hotline will run from Friday at 6 p.m. until Sunday, April 27 at midnight. Dreams are often thought of as windows into the subconscious, so just imagine what you can learn about yourself from the interpretation of your dreams! By calling 344-2270 between the said times, a dream coach will interpret your dreams, at no cost to you. In addition to the Dream Hotline, there will be a showing of “The 10 Powers of Dreaming” on Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pottery Place, located at 1808-C Round Barn Road in Champaign. The film is about the impact of dreams throughout history. Many different historical figures, much like Mary Shelley, have found inspiration in their dreams. » When the Easter bunny comes early: I won't be going home this Easter because of the ton of work that seems to come with the end of the spring semester. Even though it has never been a big holiday with my family, I was not looking forward to being without them. However, yesterday I received a package from my mom filled with candy and other goodies. » No one else liking Cadbury Eggs: I don't think Easter candy gets enough credit. Most people I know just waste it aka put their Peeps in the microwave. I didn't realize that's still a thing, but I digress. People definitely don't give Cadbury Mini Eggs enough credit. I can (and do) eat them like nobody's business, and everyone I know finds that really odd. Yeah, a chick (fitting for the holiday) liking chocolate...SUPER WEIRD. What's weird is that they're reserved for Easter. They're too good to just sit around all year, but apparently nobody likes them. Whatever haters, more for me.

MEET SAAM Sexual Assault Awareness Month works to educate community BY MATT MESCHINO

hroughout the United States, April is marked as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). During this month, many organizations and activists look to speak and educate others about sexual assault. Above all, prevention is a very crucial part of the education process. This year’s SAAM will focus on healthy sexuality and young people. Through various mediums of communication, the University has over 45 events scheduled over the course of the month. One such event is the 35th Annual Take Back the Night. This event is a march followed by a rally that will take place on the last Thursday, April 24. Students, staff and members of the community will all join together to the march, which will begin at the Main Quad and end at the Urbana Courthouse, where the rally will be held — rain or shine. Whether you know a family member, friend or loved one who has been affected by sexual assault or simply just want to get involved in the movement, this event is a great way to show some support.

A crowd-favorite during the course of this month is Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. The event started out as a small group of men brave enough to waddle around through a park in 2001, and founder Frank Baird has been blown away at the response of communities around the world. This month, tens of thousands of men will continue to participate in this event and raise millions of dollars for local rape crisis centers, domestic violence prevention and community projects. The event takes after the famous saying, “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in his or her shoes.” Each year, hundreds of students head out to the Quad and exchange their street shoes for a pair of high heels, in which they will “walk” around. While it’s fun to see men struggling to make their way in three-inch heels, this is also a great event that can raise awareness for many to see. Because the numbers of men’s sexualized violence against women is much higher than vice versa, many events, including this one, are centralized around

this type of prevention. This year, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes was held on April 11 and was a huge success. Many members of the community and a large portion of the Greek community team up for this event and really get to show their support. While some are fortunate enough to never have known anyone close to them be a victim to such violent and immoral crimes, sexual assault crimes happen more often than one might think. After spending some time asking around on the subject, it was clear that the majority of people did know someone who was sexually assaulted. And what’s more, is that these crimes occurred right here in CU. In a college town with so many young people, the frequency of sexual assault crimes is higher than expected. This is why devoting an entire month to raise awareness is such an important part in prevention. It has been said that every two minutes, another American is sexually assaulted, which makes for about 237,868 victims every year. This may seem like a high number to some people. However, many people are not aware of the small things that sexual assault entails.

Some local community members think that sexual assault only includes and points towards the most serious of these categories of crimes such as groping or raping an individual. To some people’s surprise, sexual assault can occur over many channels that do not always include just the physical aspect. Verbal sexual assault is among one of the most common forms and is not seen as a serious, if at all, offensive to some individuals. Many of the events this month seek to raise this awareness and will clearly outline exactly what anyone should avoid doing so that they do not infringe on someone else’s comfort zone. The events will also bring light on the positive actions that can be done after an act of sexual violence is reported. An alarming percent of all sexual assaults are never reported, which means 97 percent of rapists will never sit behind bars. If approached effectively, this month can open many people’s eyes, and we can begin to make changes that will improve the quality of our community and health.

MEATLESS MEDITERRANEAN The Red Herring’s vegan fusion dinners put a healthy twist on traditional, ethnic cuisine BY SHRUTI SRIKUMAR

ituated snugly in the basement of an ivycovered, cottage-style building on Oregon Street is one of the University’s most endearing eateries, the Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant. In case you don’t already know, the Red Herring is rather special to the CU, in that it is one of the area’s few restaurants that are completely vegetarian and vegan. In addition to being herbivore-friendly, the establishment takes pride in the fact that it uses as much locally grown and organic produce as possible, while also cooking up a fair amount of glutenfree items. Furthermore, the Red Herring’s mission as an organization is unique. Because of its close affiliation with the Channing-Murray Foundation — a Unitarian Universalist Campus Center (located just inside the upper portion of the building) — the restaurant actively promotes cultural inclusiveness by hosting local artists and open mic nights as well as preparing something called a “Vegan Fusion Dinner” each Wednesday night. As Holly, one of the Red Herring’s chefs, described, the fusion dinners also came about in order to “show people that you can take any food and make it vegan friendly.” Still, what exactly is a “vegan fusion dinner”? In short, it is a cultural dinner featuring a different international style of cuisine each meal. Past dinners have been inspired from various corners of the globe, showcasing food from Spain, Ethiopia, the Philippines and many other countries. With a new, vibrant menu drawn up week after week, these fusion dinners really do present a fun opportunity for vegans and the average diner alike. They are a way for the community to veer away from our predictable, convenient meals of pasta, pizza and salads and instead learn about the flavors of an unfamiliar part of the world. Diners might be taking a chance and submitting their palate to herbs and spices uncommon in their diet, but they are sure to be rewarded in both knowledge and a warm, full stomach. Similarly, from the Red Herring staff’s perspective, these fusion dinners provide the chefs an exciting chance to be creative with ingredients

and adapt to cooking international dinners while still remaining vegan-friendly. With regards to this idea, Chef Holly described the challenges faced thus far in adapting certain cuisines, stating that the Irish fusion dinner was probably the most difficult cultural food to adapt since traditional Irish cuisine is very “meat-heavy.” Ultimately, however, the chefs found an innovative solution in “a vegan beefstyle stew containing seitan rather than beef.” As for the staff’s favorite fusion dinners to date, Head Chef Adrienne Weber and Chef Holly expressed that fun dinners included the West African dinner, which featured a peanut stew, as well as the Ethiopian dinner, which included Ethiopian “bread used as a utensil” to help scoop up accompanying lentils, hummus and vegetables. By offering one singular dish composed of a variety of elements, the restaurant ensures diners get a nuanced, dynamic view of the given culture’s cuisine rather than making them pick from an unfamiliar menu of options. One of the more recent vegan fusion dinners was the Mediterranean cultural dinner on April 9. This time, the Red Herring’s cultural dinner included a vegan paella made with jasmine rice, cherry tomatoes, mixed and pitted olives, red and green peppers and a blend of spices. The plate also came with roasted red pepper hummus, containing organic chickpeas, and in house roasted peppers as well as baba ganoush — a garlicky, roasted eggplant spread — served alongside homemade whole wheat pita chips. The dinner as a whole was fantastic and really captured the invigorating, fresh flavors of the Mediterranean. If I were to pick a highlight of the dish, it would definitely be the smokey, creamy roasted red pepper hummus paired with the delightfully crispy, wholesome pita chips. The taste of the hummus and pita combo was simply spot on and immediately reminded me of the spicy, robust flavors of North Africa and the Middle East. Still, the Red Herring not only provides guests with hearty, ethnic vegetarian cooking, but also

offers super quick service, low prices (around $8 per plate), a homey atmosphere and an extremely friendly staff. If you plan to visit the Red Herring, you can certainly expect to walk out with your wallet in good shape after you've been greeted warmly by the staff members, received your plate within a few minutes after ordering and enjoyed the restaurant’s charmingly eclectic decor and inviting mood.

If you haven’t been to the Red Herring or attended one of its “vegan fusion dinners,” make sure to visit in the future. Fusion dinners coming in the near future include Argentinian on April 23, Chinese on April 30 and Italian on May 7. oger Ebert’s film festival returns to CU from Tuesday, April 22 to Sunday, April 27, at the Virginia Theatre, showcasing lesserknown movies and featuring acclaimed actors and directors such as Brie Larson and Oliver Stone. Here are some of the movies and celebrities we can’t wait to see: "Young Adult" Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) in "Young Adult" is one of the most fascinating anti-heroes to grace the screen in recent film history. A narcissistic ghostwriter living in Minneapolis, Mavis returns to her small hometown in an attempt to rekindle a romance with former flame Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson), who is married and recently had a new baby. Mavis reconnects with a varied cast of characters, including the wonderfully straightforward, awesomely nerdy Matt (Patton Oswalt, who will be attending the panel for Ebertfest). Part of the thrill of "Young Adult" is sitting back and watching Mavis forge a path of destruction through her town and her relationships, and the combination of seeing this chaos and obtaining an insight into such a character’s inner workings makes "Young

Adult" a must-see film. —By Amanda Toledo Spike Lee Spike Lee is the man. And it’s not just the fact that he directed and produced movies that showcased, for example, the story of an interracial relationship between an African-American woman and white man during the '80s in "Jungle Fever," or the experience of a young African-American male trying to be successful while dealing with the bearings of his father in "He Got Game." Nor is it the fact that he’s worked with legendary actor and man of every mother’s dreams — Denzel Washington — in numerous films and directed music videos for Michael Jackson, as well as an epic commercial with Michael Jordan. Maybe it could be the fact that he is the New York Knicks’ number one fan and comes ready to show his team spirit, or perhaps the fact that he is directing Eminem’s newest music video could be another addition to the level of awesome that is Spike to the Lee. But in all actuality, Spike Lee is the man because his impressive list of accomplishments continues to be added to. Spike Lee is the man of the '80s and beyond. —By Aaliyah Gibson

"Capote" In 1966, Truman Capote’s nonfiction novel "In Cold Blood" was published, ending the writer’s arduous six years of work on the book. These years of research, writing and anguish are the subject of Bennett Miller’s 2005 film "Capote," starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as the effervescent, calculating, deeply intelligent writer. Writing "In Cold Blood," which detailed the murders of a Kansas farm family by two drifters, traumatized and perhaps destroyed Capote — he never finished another book and died in 1984 as a result of his alcoholism. Capote befriended, even loved, one of the killers, Perry Smith (Clifton Collins, Jr.), to whom he wrote and visited extensively. Yet he needed the killers to die, so he could finish his book. Hoffman is captivating in his portrayal of Capote and this conflict; we see him break down over the years, in the midst of his “moral disintegration,” as Roger Ebert put it. We also see the apprehension of those around Capote, particularly childhood friend Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), whose success with "To Kill a Mockingbird" embittered the struggling writer. "Capote" is a carefully crafted study of how writers are transformed

by their stories, and the film stands as a testament to Hoffman’s immense talent. —By Lauren Cox "Born on the Fourth of July" Oliver Stone’s "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) was based on the biography of Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic. Stone won his second Academy Award for Best Director for this heart-wrenching tale of a young gung ho Marine who — after being wounded in battle and becoming paralyzed from the chest down — becomes bitter and channels his newfound anger by evolving into an anti-war activist and human rights advocate. As Kovic, Tom Cruise proves what an incredible performance he is capable of giving, once he lets down the “star” image and pretty boy good looks. Cruise’s performance was so impressive that it won him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. From the horrors of battle to adjusting to civilian life and rehabilitation, this film presents the life of a patriot who wouldn’t let the policies of his government taint the great country he believed in. Kyra Sedgwick plays Donna, Kovic’s girlfriend. "Born on the Fourth of July" was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Stone and co-screenwriter Kovic also received Oscar nominations for the film’s screenplay. —By Syd Slobodnik

ver the past few years, Record Store Day has quickly become a music lover’s Christmas. Record collectors' bank accounts might take a hit, but their music library substantially grows and instantly becomes unique, gathering countless special releases each year. Each year seems to be bigger than the last, and Record Store Day 2014’s list of special releases is longer than ever. But it’s not just the releases that make Record

Store Day special. Most record stores host in-store shows to help celebrate the event, and CU is no different. Both Exile on Main Street and Error Records will both be hosting in-store performances by local artists on Saturday. Exile on Main Street will open at midnight on Friday to allow customers to grab their sought-after RSD releases, and live music will begin outdoors at 10 a.m. with a set by Sun Stereo. SIGN OF LIFE MAKES ITS MARK

his year, while the weather begins to finally warm up as spring rolls around, the Institute 4 Creativity in downtown Champaign will be holding the closing reception for Sign of Life: National Printmaking Winners Exhibit. The exhibit launched at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pa. and has traveled around the country before landing at its final destination in Champaign. The exhibit showcases young artists and the different printmaking approaches that they are taking toward the medium. The exhibit is held by the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL), a nonprofit organization that encourages and provides financial assistance to artists who are just starting out with their careers. The NSAL was founded in 1944 in Washington, DC and is comprised of 18 different chapters that represent varying regions of the U.S. The Central Illinois Chapter was founded in 1981. Having local chapters, opposed to only one national organization, allows for the chapters to reflect the interests and conditions of local communities. This allows for the NSAL to create relationships with local high schools and colleges. Members of the NSAL are professional men or women involved in the arts who want to support the work of young artists and help bring them success in the future. When the NSAL was first founded, it was originally a women’s club created in order to

give opportunities to people interested in becoming artists, musicians, dancers or writers. Now, it is an entirely volunteer based organization, run using private funding from dues and endowments. “It is encouraging to be surrounded by people who think the arts are an important contribution to a healthy society. For the artist to have an ongoing interested audience is the ultimate accolade. These people pay to go to concerts, collect art work, read literature at every financial level. And they like knowing some of the stories behind the making of it,” NSAL member and exhibit coordinator Sylvia Arnstein said. This printmaking exhibit is formed from the winners of the National Award Competition that the NSAL runs. The annual competition includes a variety of different categories spanning all different art forms, including dance, drama, visual art, literature and music. Each year, these mediums are rotated while one category is chosen for the competition of the year. Participants in the National Award Competition compete at their local chapters for different cash rewards. The first place winners of the local chapter competition will then move onto the National Competition held each spring. The first place winner of this national competition will win $10,000. The event itself strives to assist young artists in their careers. During the event, experts in vary-

ing artistic fields hold classes for the progressing youth in art, while the inspirational competition concludes with a large celebration. This year’s national winner for printmaking was Doug Bosley, whose artwork will be displayed in the Signs of Life exhibit. Bosley is an artist with degrees from both Western Washington State and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bosley mainly uses a type of printmaking called mezzotint, a part of the intaglio family (meaning a design engraved into a material) where lines or dots-based techniques, such as cross-hatching or stippling, are created. This allows the artist to achieve differing tonalities by roughing the plate with thousands of lines or dots etched into it. In mezzotint printmaking, a copper or zinc plate is physically manipulated to hold ink. “This technique contributes to the mysterious, otherworldly environments that Doug creates,” Arnstein said. In addition, Bosley is also a member of the International Mezzotint Society. This technique was not the only reason Bosley was chosen as the national competition winner. When going through his submissions, the local and national judges were “impressed with the maturity of the content and level of consistency of skill he displayed,” Arnstein said. Many of his pieces paint pictures of other unearthly worlds, drawing us outside the realm of our own lives and into the mysterious

worlds that he has created through his printmaking. “I was struck by the extraordinary level of quality and craft exhibited by these emerging artists,” Institute 4 Creativity Director Bill Longfellow said. Doug Bosley is not the only artist to have pieces displayed at the Signs of Life exhibit. His work is displayed amongst the works of other talented and emerging artists. “However, I was even more impressed by the maturity and refinement of each artistic voice. The individuality and uniqueness of each artist is evident immediately and the variety and richness of the work is really quite remarkable. These myriad of unique expressions are united by a masterful level of craft and become a single unified statement,” Arnstein said. Aside from the NSAL’s National Competition, Doug Bosley has been recognized in many other competitions and has had his work displayed in many different exhibitions. The closing reception for the Signs of Life: National Printmaking Winners exhibit will take place on Friday, April 18th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Institute 4 Creativity in downtown Champaign. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., there will be a performance by flutist Ashley Chanel Shank, NSAL intern for the Woodwind Competition and Doctorate of Musical Arts candidate at the University. With so many diverse and talented artists, Signs of Life: National Printmaking Winners exhibit is surely a worthwhile stop to make.
