Linger || The Light Fades record.
Some may argue that 2014 was a weak year for music, or that the year was front-loaded with all the best releases coming in the first few months. I disagree: If anything, genres seemed to take turns letting loose the best talent their ranks had to offer. I enjoyed a lot of rock albums early in the year, hip-hop in the spring and summer, and this fall has produced some already-classic electronic records. The music section at buzz will put out their year-end list soon but, in the meantime, I thought I would abuse my position to share my personal list with a connotation of legitimacy and credibility. I’ve put them in descending order for added drama. 10. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib– PiĂąata 9. Future Islands– Singles 8. Sharon Van Etten– Are We There 7. Caribou– Our Love 6. Mick Jenkins– The Water[s] 5. SBTRKT– Wonder Where We Land 4. Real Estate– Atlas 3. Les Sins– Michael The debut from Toro Y Moi’s Chaz surprised me. I especially enjoyed the groovy “Why,â€? eccentricity of “Pastâ€? and subtle politics of “Talk About.â€?
2. Angel Olsen– Burn Your Fire For No Witness Intrigued by her stellar NPR Tiny Desk performance, this album grew on me quickly and has yet to lose its allure. Less than a year old, and it’s already classic. 1. Isaiah Rashad– Cilvia Demo Few hip-hop records have stuck with me as closely as this one. For a freshman, Rashad is remarkably vulnerable and honest, and the resulting album is touching and relatable.

ALBUMS It is that time of year again. NME, Rough Trade and Stereogum already published their lists of 2014's best albums. Rolling Stone gave their top spot to U2's unwelcome houseguest of a record, but who expected relevancy from the magazine still plopping Willie Nelson on the cover? I'd like to think we do a little better at buzz. You can decide for yourself when our list comes out in a couple weeks, but the reveal isn't nearly as fun as the process behind it.

»MILK IN MY HOT CHOCOLATE A paragraph about something as common as milky hot chocolate seems very generic, but as I'm lactose intolerant, I have very few excuses or reasons to buy milk. It's doubly awful because the fact that I can't have it makes me want it that much more and, consequently, I have a problematic love affair with all things dairy. Let's just say that where excellent food is concerned, I consider lactose intolerance more of a challenge than an obstacle. I haven't had the luxury of preparing my hot chocolate with real milk in a while, but my roommate recently offered me some of the liquid gold while pouring himself a glass. Nothing beats coming in from the cold to experience the milky sweet sensation of this rich, frothy delight. As for the... slight discomfort afterward: totally worth it.

TOPPING
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was going to be a stretch for its cast and crew, considering its follow-up, Mockingjay – Part 1, is essentially half of a movie, not to mention the adapted from fans’ least favorite book in the series. Even with those factors working against the three-quel, it manages to live up to its predecessors and offer blockbuster excitement of a different kind. Whereas the first two installments provided gimmicky thrills with tracker jackers, genetically engineered montsers, acidic fog, a spinning clock and more, Mockingjay – Part 1 brings political tension to the forefront. The movie plays out like a futuristic war thriller in the vein of Zero Dark Thirty or Green Zone, but for young adults. This aspect might be off-putting to some viewers, especially those who haven’t read the source material, but will entice more mature audiences. Part 1 picks up right where Catching Fire left off, with Katniss arriving in District 13 and the plans for a revolution in Panem escalating. Former game-maker Plutarch Heavensbee (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and District 13 President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) recruit Katniss to be the face of the revolution, filming her for propaganda clips and rallying the other districts’ support.
Meanwhile, the Capital is holding Peeta hostage with fellow tributes Annie and Johanna and attempting to stifle any spark of the revolution by dropping bombs and launching attacks on rebellious districts. The scope of this movie is ambitious, with the characters and plot building toward something grand, beyond anything covered in the first two films. (Although it’s somewhat disappointing that we don’t get to see shit hit the fan until November 2015.) Director Francis Lawrence captures the feeling of unrest and the brewing uprising in every conversation and action sequence. You will get chills when Katniss sings the haunting “The Hanging Tree, and the scene transitions to a horde of people singing it as they take down a power-generating dam. With its sights set on an impressive, explosive finale, Part 1 relegates some of the supporting characters and the saga’s romantic subplots to the wayside. The wisecracking Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) and prima donna Effie (Elizabeth Banks) have minimal screen time but infuse some much-needed color into this dark installment. Instead, the aforementioned Heavensbee and President Coin appear almost as much as Katniss,
which is acceptable because the late Hoffman and Moore inject star power and depth into their roles. Moore is perfectly cast, displaying poise and control, especially while she is acting as commanderin-chief when District 13 comes under fire. As usual, Jennifer Lawrence brings the heat as the series’ heroine. She has the dramatic chops to pull off Katniss’s emotional distress as a result of Peeta’s abduction and her constant presence in the spotlight. She creates a strong, relatable hero while still allowing some vulnerability to escape her no-nonsense exterior; far more advanced than Kristen Stewart ever could as Bella Swan in the Twilight Saga. (Plus, we get to hear J-Law sing!) While some viewers may simply see Mockingjay – Part 1 as an extended trailer for Part 2, the writers and director bring enough action and thrills to the table to justify the story’s split. This way, the revolution is not rushed and characters can be better developed. Part 1 is a more complex movie than its predecessors and represents a fine example of how a series should and can mature with its characters and fans. I don’t recommend the movie to people who haven’t seen the rest of the franchise but, for fans, it will be a treat of a supplement to the book.

SASKIA
Bakker has long-developed a passion for music. Parented by a couple of music junkies in a thriving Champaign-Urbana music scene, it seemed almost inevitable that Bakker would get involved herself. But as an eighth grader, finding opportunity to participate in a college music scene was a difficult task. In early 2014, the wide-eyed teen started the Undercut Collective—a DIY booking collective—and started her push toward providing all-ages shows for her peers. Before creating the collective, the only problem Bakker saw with the CU music scene was the fact that many shows in town weren’t for all ages. “So many times I’d go to a show at HighDive or something, but I’d always have to go with my parents, or they were just too expensive, Bakker said. Self-driven and independent, the student took initiative and utilized her connections in the scene to get the collective running. Bakker first went to her parents for help. The music enthusiasts introduced her to their friend Lindsay Barr, who plays keys in Champaign band Wicked Walls. Barr then led Bakker to Error Records owner Nathan Landolt, who has provided the Undercut Collective with an all-ages space to host its shows. Landolt, who grew up near St. Louis, said having an opportunity to attend all-ages shows are what changed his life, ultimately influencing his decision to open up his all-ages Error Records venue last year. “If I wouldn’t have been able to get into some of the all-ages venues in St. Louis that I did, as a 15 year old, I would have never started a band, later traveled the country and felt like I had a real way to express myself to the world, Landolt said. “I don’t want anyone else to not be able to experience those same things that I was fortunate enough to. But while Bakker had found a location, she still saw problems with its execution. “But with his shows, even though they were allages, it was still an adult-focused audience, Bakker said. “We figured out a plan for the first show that I had in mind. I talked to some local bands and got connected with local people to help me start it out. I got some people to support me, she said. With this support, Bakker was able to host the collective’s first show earlier this March. She quickly got into the groove of things, picking up on aspects of the music scene and becoming immersed in the hard work it takes to put on a show. Bakker said it doesn’t hurt to be as young as she is, either. “I think a lot of people are surprised when they find out my age, the high school freshman said. “I like mentioning my age when I contact bands so people
know how young I am, and they’re always really surprised. But there’s also a worry in me that people will think that I’m not taking this seriously, when I really am. I think that, especially since I’m becoming better known, people know that I’m serious about it. And Bakker has done her best to make sure she’s not underestimated. Undercut Collective began as an idea, and has transformed into something more meaningful for Bakker. Bakker said she wants to give something back to young people in the community who may not get opportunities otherwise, because for Bakker, going to shows at a young age are what changed her life to begin with. Bakker said her first live music experience was going to the St. Louis leg of the 2013 Warped Tour when she was in seventh grade.

Bakker said. “You hear and feel it throughout your entire body. Once I experienced it for the first time, it kind of became an addiction for me. It became Bakker’s goal to share that same feeling among her peers. “Those are such great experiences, Bakker said. “I want to give them to people for a reasonable price, close by, and they don’t need to have their parents with them. Bakker said she’s a fan of several CU bands and constantly endorses the local music she comes across. “I’ve been listening to Elsinore since I was six or seven, are definitely my favorite. I’ve been to every allages concert that they play. I discover a lot of new local bands because of this. I think another favorite of mine would be Withershins, who have played at another one of my shows. Bakker said she wants to continue booking popular local bands like Elsinore and Withershins, with no intention of the Undercut Collec-
tive being a small-time project. “A really far-fetched dream would be for me to have my own venue to put on shows, but that’s a little too complicated for me right now,â€? Bakker said, thinking about the future and then reverting her focus to the present. “I want to give kids live music and an opportunity to experience that and meet others like them.â€? Dec. 13, a unique event will be hosted at Exile on Main Street. The DESPERATE COLLECTORS ANTIQUE’S ROADSHOW brings the interesting combination of antique appraisal and stand-up comedy to Champaign, featuring local comedians alongside some of Chicago’s rising talent. buzz had the chance to catch up with comedian (and former buzz editor) Nick Martin about his experiences in comedy before the event. buzz: Where did you grow up? Nick Martin: New Lenox, Ill. It’s a suburb of Chicago, 10 miles east of Joliet. In 2012(?), it was named heroin-death capital of the state. buzz: What first got you into doing comedy? Did you stumble upon it? NM: Whoa! I literally stumbled upon it on the website http://stumbleupon.com. I saw a pic of CU Comedy's Jesse and Justin Tuttle saying, “Try comedy at Memphis on Main Wednesdays!” and then I did it. buzz: What do you usually like to joke about in your acts? Where do you get your material from? NM: Lately? Dumb failures; Ketamine; abuses of power; suicide by train; Disney’s Doug; JonBenét Ramsey; robot slaves; folding $20 to predict 9/11; NBC’s hit hour-long drama Chicago P.D.; etc. Thankfully, I’m not an artist, so I don’t have to deal with inspiration. I “craft” my “content” based on what’s “marketable to key demographics.” Teens love controversy; they love drama. That’s me. I aim for the edgy teen market. buzz: Where is your favorite place to perform? NM: No lie: indie record stores. But I’m biased caue I run a show in one. Plus, the show I set up in Champaign is also one—DESPERATE COLLECTORS TRAVELING ANTIQUE’S ROADSHOW LIVE STANDUP COMEDY AND ANTIQUE APPRAISAL ON STAGE! DECEMBER 13TH, 2014, 7PM. ANTIQUES FOR AUCTION. REFRESHMENTS PROVIDED—so that’s why I think they’re the best.
buzz: What challenges have you faced when you first got into comedy? What challenges do you face now? NM: When I started, I talked about my dong A LOT. Thankfully, I got that garbage chopped off. Currently, I struggle with erectile dysfunction. buzz: Have you ever told a joke that didn’t make the audience laugh? How do you recover? NM: Oh sure, jokes often don’t hit. Usually, I yell at the crowd, berate their meager intelligence. I spit on them, kick dirt in their face. I say, “Hey, you’re looking at a satirical GENIUS over here!” and that’s when I dim the lights.... Sensuous music starts playing. It was all just a neg. Then I actually seduce the audience: with laughter. I learned all these tricks and more from pick-up artist forums, ebooks and email newsletters.

NM: When dudes come up to me after a show and say, “Hey man, wanna try this vape pen?” and then proceed to tell me about chemtrails or data dandruff or some other thing I like. buzz: Has your childhood/growing up affected the material you like to talk about? NM: A lot of people yelled at me as a child. Now, I yell a lot at audiences. I doubt this is coincidental. buzz: How do you feel when you’re on stage? Is it the same type of feeling that you experience before or during every performance, or does it differ? NM: I feel great on stage—high, even. And usually, I’m not even actually high. But I also feel great

NM: Nah, I’m actually a full-time webcam model. buzz: How involved was your family in your comedian career? Were they fairly supportive? Were they against it? Do they come to see your shows? NM: Very supportive. My dad tried stand-up for the first time a few weeks ago and crushed it! buzz: Can someone learn to be funny, or is it more of a gift? NM: Some people are born naturally funny! Like George W. Bush, Jeb Bush, Jenna Bush, George H.W. Bush. That’s it. buzz: What advice could you give to other aspiring comedians? THE FOODIE HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
)LQG WKH :D\ WR <RXU )ULHQGV· 6WRPDFKV DQG +HDUWV ZLWK 7KHVH /RFDO *DVWURQRPLF *LIWV PAUL ANGELILLO
WHETHER
your friends Instagram every morsel that enters their mouths or simply revel in any opportunity to chow down, food–and any present that aids in its preparation or obtainment–is an unquestionably excellent holiday gift idea. Whether you’re looking to make the winter months in CU a bit more bearable or bring some of the local favorites to those who have never tried them, this foodie gift guide is sure to spread some delicious cheer. Pandamonium Doughnuts: $2 a donut (start price) If homemade gingerbread cookies aren’t exactly your friends' thing and they’re too lazy (or cold) to make the early morning trek out to Goodwin and Oregon on weekdays, there might not be a better yuletide treat than James Kyung’s artisan doughnuts. A new food truck and the release of decadent, festive flavors like Egg Nog, Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Peppermint have kept the centerless creations selling out six days a week. The secret to stocking up on some of your favorite flavors? You don’t need to take the 7:30 a.m. trek to the truck’s opening. Pandamonium takes custom orders with only a half-dozen doughnut minimum order per flavor. And honestly, if you’re giving your friend any fewer than six doughnuts, you’re torturing them instead of giving a gift. Contact Pandamonium Doughnuts through their Facebook page or PandamoniumDoughnuts@ gmail.com for an updated flavor/price menu on special orders.
Papa Del’s Shipped Pizzas: $11.90 base for thin crust, $17.25 for pan Afraid your favorite foodie won’t be able to survive winter break without their favorite deep dish pizza? Or maybe they’ve moved away or graduated and haven’t tasted the gooey, meaty delight in quite some time. No matter what justification you need to swing, there’s perhaps no more authentic or nostalgic taste of CU than your own oven-baked deep-dish pizza. Prepared to your exact specifications and choice of toppings, the pizzas are handmade and then frozen to ensure a perfect preservation of all the crisp, saucy goodness. By offering so much customization and providing such a hearty treat, Papa Del’s dishes up the perfect offering for New Year's dinner or any other celebration that could use a slice. Frozen pizzas (as well as gift cards and t-shirts) can be ordered online at https://papadels.com/ preorder.php. Pizzas can be ordered to ship up to

one week in advance and normally ship within two days of ordering.
Common Ground Food Co-op Ownership: $60 flat Want to help out the community while simultaneously ensuring your food-loving friend uses some of the best ingredients available to the CU community? Gifting an equity share in the co-op gives your friend access to Common Ground’s Owner Appreciation Days; that’s 10% off their entire purchase three times a year, as well as discounts for bulk purchasing, classes and workshops. More than that, the equity share relates to actual earnings, available as a rebate based on how much your friend spends. Others choose simply to reinvest the profits, further strengthening a store that donated over $30,000 to community organizations last year and made over $1,000,000 in local revenue. Talk to any staff member at Common Ground for more information on buying an ownership. Your friend will need to fill out a form to legally take control of their equity share, but they’ll also receive their New Owner card and bag as a bonus. The co-op is located inside Lincoln Square Mall at 300 South Broadway Avenue #166, in downtown Urbana.
Old Time Meat & Deli Gift Bundles: Starting at $60 Looking for a delicious gift that just keeps on giving? How about stocking your friend’s freezer with pound after pound of steak and sausage to cook up for you (and your other friends) all through next year? There might not be many “old time” butchers left in CU, but the guys at Old Time Deli are doing their best to keep the tradition of serving customers expertly cut and wrapped chops from the most tender cows and pigs around. Their bundle offerings combine at least five different items at a massively decreased price, like the 10 lbs. Griller’s Delight bundle with ground chuck, t-bone steaks, ribeyes, bratwurst and pork steaks. The combinations range all the way up to 100 lbs. and there’s even a Pick-5 bundle if you’re looking to grab your friend’s favorite cuts! Information on Old Time’s available bundles can be found at http://oldtimemeatanddeli.com/ content/bundles. Orders can be placed by fax or in-person at 2018 S. Neil St. in Champaign.

UNLESS
you’ve taken an Asian American Studies course, it’s unlikely that you’ve heard of Vincent Chin. In 1982, Chin was celebrating his bachelor party at a bar when Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz instigated a fight with him. Ebens and Nitz were Chrysler factory workers who had been laid off due to that fact that jobs were being lost to Japan. Even though Chin was Chinese, not Japanese, Ebens and Nitz used his physical appearance as an outlet for their anger. After being kicked out of the bar, Ebens and Nitz tracked Chin down and beat him with a baseball bat, which led to his death four days later. Ebens and Nitz received no jail time for their crime. Instead, they were sentenced to three years of probation and $3,000 in fines. The injustice that surrounded the Vincent Chin murder was the subject of conversation for the first meeting hosted by Paradox, an Asian American social justice organization. Using the Vincent Chin story as an example, members of Paradox came together to discuss how they can combat instances of injustice against Asian Americans, both on campus and after they graduate. The idea of starting Paradox came about in the spring of 2014. One of the members, Alex Wen, was frustrated that, although the University has one of
the strongest Asian communities in the country, social justice issues were not being taken to the next level. For Wen this, next level is “talking about Asian Americans in a more political climate, such as their place in social structures. Paradox started as an art collective that focused on creating innovative ideas to spark interest and raise awareness of Asian American issues. Since then, it has evolved into a club that creates innovative methods—both art and non-art—that help kick start action in the Asian American community and spread their message throughout campus. One of the most unique things about Paradox is their structure, or lack of one. Paradox does not have an official executive board. They instead focus on creating a free-flowing collective. Because social justice issues change so rapidly and require large amounts of focus and dedication, Paradox wants to avoid tying down members to a particular project or issue. Instead, they want to create a community of thinkers that propose social justice projects they are passionate about and that help other members to accomplish their goals. As a way to spread their message, Paradox sees itself as a supplement to other Asian American clubs on campus “Other organizations do a really good job of forming a community and hosting clubs that raise
awareness about culture and social identity. Paradox wants its members to use that community that they’ve built up in other clubs in a way that can facilitate change, Wen said. For this reason, Paradox wants to begin with the leaders of other Asian American student organizations on campus in order to can spread Paradox’s message to their members. In describing their organization, Paradox uses two important terms: “model minority and “forever foreigner. “ Model minority is the belief that Asian Americans are better than other minorities. This is often used to turn Asian Americans into a weapon that can be used against other minorities. Going along with this is the idea of forever foreigner, the belief that Asian Americans will never fully be American. Paradox is seeking to fight against both of these beliefs and change how Asian Americans are perceived in society. One of the projects that Paradox has started in order to facilitate this change is called Asian American Stories. Paradox invites members of the Asian American community to share their experiences, from microaggression or something as major as harassment. The importance of sharing these stories is to show the rest of the world that these things do happen, even if they are misrepresented by the media or underrepresented by the public. Wen feels
that “when race is talked about, Asian Americans are not thought of or included in the conversation. For him, Asian American Stories is a way to combat this. Paradox also wants to be an organization that stands in solidarity with other minorities. They recently published an article about the events in Ferguson, written from an Asian American perspective. Although some may say that they have no right to do this, Wen disagrees. “Asian American struggles are similar in their roots to struggles that Latinos and African Americans have faced. We want to align ourselves with other races and show our support," he said. Bing Wang, another member of Paradox, says that the club has a couple projects in the works for the future. “We want to make t-shirts that combat the forever foreigner belief. For instance, we might print “Born and raised in Chicago on one of them, he said. They are also thinking about creating an actual racism card that they can pull out to give to people who might be interested in joining their organization. For Paradox, the question will always be, “What can we do next? More information can be found at http://facebook. com/paradoxuiuc. December 12-18, 2014 buzz 9
