ets on flatbed trucks at village fetes, death metal festivals in Lithuania, more than a handful of Reading & Leeds appearances - The Amazons are no strangers to getting themselves into anywhere and everywhere throughout the summer months. “Who saw The FF’ers play?” guitarist Chris Alderton asks his bandmates, referencing a now-infamous incident at Reading Festival 2008 when little-known band The FF’ers were rumoured to be a Foo Fighters secret set. They weren’t, of course. “It’s a legendary Reading story,” bassist Elliot Briggs chimes in. “On the BBC Introducing Stage, everybody thought it was Foo Fighters,” Chris continues. “Because their MySpace, you searched The FF’ers, they had a picture of Dave Grohl as their bloody profile picture! Idiots!” “They got bottled when they came on,” drummer Joe Emmett shakes his head, “and it was clumps of mud. They fucked it up for the two bands that came on after them, who also got bottled because everyone was so pissed off.” “If we ever meet Foo Fighters, we’ve gotta tell ‘em that story! That’s so funny!” frontman Matt Thomson concludes. The Amazons are the kind of band who have lots of stories. With the release of their self-titled debut back in 2017, they found the hype-train thundering forward, which presented an opportunity for the four-piece to take things even further than they ever thought possible, regularly playing to thousands of fans chanting their songs right back to them. Before then, they learnt the ropes scrapping in the newband scrum of multi-venue city events and tiny stages in the sort of remote fields that otherwise host boot sales for much of the year. Local Reading boys, they’ve played the BBC Introducing Stage a few times too, including once as a previous incarnation called Peers, prior to Joe joining the band. “If you can do it on those stages, then you can do it on the bigger ones,” Joe reasons. “But you have to cut your teeth doing that first.” “Exactly!” Matt exclaims. “Those places are so important, and they’re so much fucking fun. The important stuff and the fun stuff usually go hand in hand. “You’ve just got to be able to go in and fucking play. We saw plenty of sets where they were faffing around with backing tracks and all this stuff that needs preparation, and it eats into their set. You need to be able to plug in and play - be good musicians on your own merit. You learn a huge amount of that as a new band.” “It’s a real trial by fire,” Chris adds. “Every single one we did

“It’s all about big moments, stuff you’ll remember” Matt Thomson something would fuck up.” “It keeps you on your toes as musicians,” Matt continues. “You realise you’re not the only band out there. Sometimes when you’re touring and stuff you forget, but actually, it’s not a competition in terms of creativity - you can always sit side by side. “But it is a competition for people’s attention, and you want to be the act that people are talking about when they’re going home. If you want to get opportunities out of these festivals, these smaller festivals, that’s what they’re about - you need to fucking fight for it.” “Exactly - why should people give a shit about your band?” Joe says. “That’s a perfect platform to work out how you go about it.” What does it take for a band to be a good festival band? “It’s about knowing the audience,” Matt muses. “It’s about not being in your world. It’s about performing! You know you can be a recording artist or touring artist, but it’s different from being a good festival performer. That really is about performance and the art. It’s putting on a good show.” “If you think about it, that’s what festivals give you the

8

DORK

opportunity to do,” he continues. “There are so many artists, and being a musician can be quite a collaborative experience - it enriches the story of the band, and how you see the band, if you can connect and collaborate with other artists. I think that’s always interesting.” With album two, ‘Future Dust’, firmly in the pipeline, The Amazons are ready to go to the great beyond. In their calendar for this year, they have a handful of festivals, including Neighbourhood Weekender, Community, TRNSMT and Reading & Leeds, plus a return to The Great Escape, where the ides of collaboration are already somewhat in motion. “We’re working out who’s playing on our day,” Matt says. “We’re talking to Black Honey. Izzy [B Phillips, vocals] messaged me like, ‘Do you wanna do something?’ and I was like-” pulling a sneaky face, he continues. “Maybe...? She said, top secret, so I thought, ‘I’ve got a Dork interview, I’ll bring it up then!’ So, something might happen.” “It’s about an element of surprise as well,” Joe argues. “You can recite songs the way they are on an album, but for us we get enjoyment out of

extending songs, putting a bit more into the production, and solos - that’s what ticks our boxes.” Matt swiftly agrees: “Yeah, absolutely. You always look to that kind of stuff, especially being from Reading! You look to different sets in the past; stuff we’ve seen with our own eyes over the years has definitely shaped the way we look at what we want to do.” “It’s all about big moments, stuff you’ll remember. It’s not cookie cutter, ‘Oh right, I’ve

The Amazons’ first Reading Festivals They’ve got one of the biggest festivals in the planet in their hometown - so when were The Amazons’ first times? Joe - 2002 “I only went on Sunday because I was a metalhead. My best memory from the day was the Slipknot mosh pit when it started with plastic bottles being thrown. Then it progressed to golf balls, and then out of the corner of my eye, a huge log hurls itself through the air! No idea how anyone got a log…” Elliot - 2005 “I was twelve or thirteen, and my parents let me go on my own. I was supposed to meet up with my friend, but I only wound up seeing him at the end. I was walking around pretty much on my own; Foos were playing, Pixies were playing - and Iron Maiden!” Matt - 2007 “I went on Friday, and I loved it so much my parents let me go on Sunday. I had Razorlight on my day! Everyone was screaming ‘RazorSHITE!’” Chris - 2010 “My parents didn’t let me go until I was eighteen, but I played when I was fifteen, in a previous band [Peers].”

Future sounds The Amazons’ new album is on the way. We asked frontman Matt Thomson what to expect from ‘Future Dust’. How are you feeling for the new album? The first record felt like the end of something, but this album felt like something we needed to get over. It’s the start of a journey in terms of the band and us creatively, as a four piece and individually. We had to push through and set the direction of what we wanted to do. It feels like a beginning. How did writing for it go? There are a lot of songs that we didn’t finish in time, so we’re already thinking about the next album. That wasn’t the case with the first; that album we just used up everything that we had. There was nothing left, ‘this is the best we’ve got’. Sonically it’s heavier and bigger than the first record; It’s a bit darker. What was the inspiration behind that, it sounds quite introspective? It’s basically about my 2018, lyrically. Lots of weird stuff happened on a personal level, but then I found a lot of the stuff I was talking about naturally fed into a slightly broader question. All our relationships are conducted on phones at the moment, like 50% of your relationship, and that’s your personal life - that’s your life. It seemed to naturally feed into something broader. We’re at the beginning of such a weird time with this stuff that you don’t know what’s going to happen, and we don’t know what the consequences of this way we’re living, or conducting a social life are. Lyrically, that’s how I’m dressing everything -

10

DORK

it has to come from the heart. That sounds ‘a bit heavy’. Imagine trying to write a song about a really big question like that. It wasn’t going to be real, but it started personal and turned broader. You’re right about it being introspective, but it’s definitely dealing with this broader aspect. That’s just the time we’re in. It’s not about telling you what to do; it’s about reflecting. I don’t have answers; I don’t think anyone has answers, that’s why it’s an interesting time. You totally distrust anyone who says they do have answers because, how can you? So it was just about reflecting and I feel a lot of my personal life, I was confused and insecure about stuff and direction this was going in. It’s a bit of a dark record, lyrically at least, sonically probably as well. Did you feel like it was something you needed to do for ‘the people’? I don’t think any band is obliged to do that. You can address that stuff in a cool way and not be deemed a political band. There was an ‘Ugh, should I talk about this?’, but once you get over that and try not to be preachy, like, ‘I’m right, and you’re wrong’, it’s not really about that. It’s just about reflecting. Is that something that other bands should be doing? There’s definitely a place for it, cause it’s just expression. I’m not going, ‘Fucking hell! What are bands doing?! Wake the fuck up!’ It’s not really like that; it’s about just doing what you want to do. Bands that address it - cool, but don’t ram it down your throat. The Amazons’ album ‘Future Dust’ is out 24th May.

“We’re almost the underdogs at festivals” Joe Emmett

seen them before so what else is going to happen?’” he says with a shrug. “There are plenty of acts out there, and it’s great, but it’s not what I think rock’n’roll is about.” Much like Alex Turner’s statement when picking up Arctic Monkeys’ Best Album gong at the 2014 Brit Awards that “rock’n’roll, it just won’t go away,” The Amazons are taking the genre back to its fundamentals, and there’s no place better than at a festival. It’s all about “showing a bit of musicianship because we don’t have the craziest lights,” Matt reckons. “We don’t have many gimmicks of any sort. We get off on sets from Tame Impala or Foo Fighters, where they use their relationship and chemistry as a band to twist, bend and shape the songs slightly different, and create something new. “We’re all looking for ‘moments’. That’s what you do with festival sets, and that’s what you do with normal sets because no one can memorise an entire bloody set. When they’re thinking about it, they’re going to be thinking about the beginning and the end. If you can throw a moment in the middle, then that’s great. That’s what you want.” Having spent years attending festivals, watching them on the telly, and now playing them themselves, the band have notched up their own tally of bizarre, memorable moments. “We played an interesting festival in Lithuania. It was a death metal festival, I’m not quite sure how we fit on it,” Matt recalls with a bemused look on his face. “The middle of a forest in Lithuania. We drove in from Latvia, and it was a nearly threeday all round trip. Usually, you go to a festival and fly out straight, but we had to drive from Riga to this forest, and then it was just like this straight up, doom, black, death metal, basically. “Guys windmilling, all super goth; big black jeans with all the tassels on or whatever, and metal bits. I guess we were there because that was just their counter-culture, sub-culture thing, but it wasn’t ‘Oh I love this band’.” Festival mishaps in the lads’ early days weren’t just limited to those faroff European countries. Along with one dance festival booking -”There were 20,000 people off their fucking

DORK

11

nut!” - the most notable booking misfire came from a “village fete in Drayton”. It saw the four of them loaded on the back of a truck while children ran amok on bouncy castles. “We had to cut our set short because the lorry was being towed at 8pm,” Elliot laughs. “That was the only time we called our manager and was like, ‘We’re not playing!’” Matt says. He adopts a more stern voice. “’Yes, you are!’ We’ve never done it since.” All these experiences gave The Amazons invaluable lessons in how to handle precarious situations, and they also helped prepare them for the current musical climate, in which your traditional three-or-four-piecewith-guitars is on the wane. Last year at Reading & Leeds, some of the biggest crowds over the weekend came out for afternoon sets from Post Malone (who’s

12

DORK

back to headline this August), Dua Lipa and Kendrick Lamar. “I feel empowered by being a band,” Matt declares. “You look through the line-up, and classic formations of bands are few and far between.” “We’re almost the underdogs at festivals,” Joe picks up. “On our day at Reading we’re sandwiched between Lil Baby and Machine Gun Kelly - but that’s cool, it doesn’t bother us one iota!” “We probably prefer that on a line-up than one full of bands, who cares?” Matt says. “It means you can stick out and drop something a little bit different, and we want to play on that even more.” “There aren’t really many tribes anymore,” Chris offers. “In terms of people who listen to exclusively metal and that sort of thing, people listen to everything now because of the internet.” “I’m getting fed up of people saying they like everything,” Matt

says, gathering his thoughts. “I don’t like everything. I hate stuff. How can you ‘love love love’ some stuff without not being that into other stuff? Being passionate about something is good. I’m not saying slag off every other type of music except rock, that’s not what it’s about, but it’s also…” “Just say you love one thing at least,” Chris adds. That one thing for The Amazons is unashamedly rock music. For them, home will always be crunching riffs and thunderous drums alongside Matt’s howling vocals. They’re the kind of band who’ll make sure you remember them, be it at a short festival set in the middle of a far-flung forest - or perhaps, if all goes well, top of the bill at their local stomping ground. P The Amazons play The Great Escape (9th-11th May), Community (30th June), Reading & Leeds (23rd-25th August) and more.

Sight + Sound FESTIVAL Q+A

Hi Stina! Congrats on your new album. Are you looking forward to the year ahead? I am! I feel we’ve all had a very turbulent 2018, let’s hope 2019 picks up. It must feel a bit odd no longer being part of a duo, but nice to be in total control now? It’s great to have progress. I’m enjoying the adventure of taking my music somewhere new and uncharted. It’s a new lease of life for me. Do you have a band you’re taking with you to festivals and stuff? I do have a band! They’re amazing, and I’m so excited to introduce them to everyone. You’ll love them, I’m sure! Where can we find you playing this summer? You’re at Citadel, right? HB played Citadel a few years back and had an awesome time, so I’m really happy we’re returning. I’m already praying to the weather gods for sunshine. On a scale of 1-10, how enthusiastic are you about camping? I never get to camp as we usually have to leave after our set so I think I’d be up for it. As long as I had some great camping clobber - that makes the difference, right? Have you ever had any disasters or mishaps at festivals? We lost our car key at Bestival one year and had to get all the way back to Glasgow without a car… It was an adventure for sure. What in your opinion makes a

A line-up change, a new album, a summer of festivals - it’s all going on for Honeyblood.

Bear’s Den’s Festival Bangers Ahead of this year’s Citadel, Bear’s Den have put together a playlist that gets them in the festival mood.

perfect festival? Good vibes, lovely crowds and great scran. If you’ve got all that a little rain won’t spoil your weekend. Do you have any must-have items that you always take with you when on the road?

BANFI - FURNITURE SONG

At festivals, I carry about this little tube of glittery anti-bacterial hand wash in the shape of a dog. It’s so cute; I love meeting people in the loo queue and dishing it out. Hygiene is very important, and it can be cute too. Anything else we should know? New album out soon! ‘In Plain Sight’, 24th May on Marathon. Honeyblood play Citadel (14th July) and more.

All bangers. No mash. So many tunes. Love this band.

MATT CORBY - MIRACLE LOVE Such a vibey song. Cannot wait to see him play again at Citadel.

FOALS - EXITS The new album sounds incredible. Too many huge songs to choose from really, but right now I’m loving ‘Exits’. SAM FENDER HYPERSONIC MISSILES Massive festival tune! Loving the Springsteen vibe of this song. WOVOKA GENTLE BRANSCOMBE Awesome band. Listened to this song way too much. It’s completely beautiful. TUSKS - PEACHY KEEN Honoured to be touring with Tusks this year. She’s an unbelievable songwriter. DAVID BYRNE - HERE I saw David Byrne live at the O2 last year - he opened with this song before casually performing the greatest live show I’ve ever seen.

The Futureheads’ Hit The North Bangers The Futureheads are back, and they’re playing Hit The North’s opening party (3rd May). We figured it was a decent enough excuse to get guitarist and all round indie legend Ross Millard to select a few other acts from the line-up.

Oranje is the new black

A FESTIVAL , A PARADE POCKET KNIFE One of the most popular local bands in the region, they’ll definitely have a big crowd.

The Netherlands is continuing its hot streak this summer with a stage at The Great Escape, and a buzzier-than-ever bill at Lowlands. To celebrate, Pip Blom runs us through her fave local bands.

Personal Trainer A seven-piece band with an always changing line-up. When they play, there’s a really cool balance between complete chaos and super poppy songs. They’ve got three guitarists, but every single one of them plays something different. For people who love LCD Soundsystem, Sonic Youth and Pixies.

The Homesick One of the tightest bands I’ve ever seen. They’ve just finished recording their second album, and I’m looking forward to it a lot. Their drummer is one of the

coolest drummers you will ever see. He’s got one look, and one focus point but in the meantime, he’s drumming like a beast. For people who love ‘Animal Collective’ and ‘Women’.

Lewsberg Their album ‘Lewsberg’ is one of my favourite records from last year. The band reminds me a lot of Velvet Underground. Their songs are repetitive but in a very cool way. It isn’t boring at all. The band itself is really cool to look at cause their bass player is one of the coolest people you will see on a stage.

Scram C Baby And last but not least, Scram C Baby. I grew up listening to this band. I’m always a bit afraid to go and watch bands live from my youth. But after the release of their latest album ‘Give Us A Kiss’ I really wanted to see them. The album is a lot better than I expected and good news: they are a cool band to see live too! The Great Escape runs from 9th-11th May, and Lowlands from 16th-18th August.

SWINE TAX - HOLD YOUR OWN Really good North East-based band. One part US-indie, one part British idiosyncrasy. EMILY CAPELL - WHO KILLED SMILEY CULTURE? Singer from down South with a great voice. ZUZU - SEABED Haven’t seen Zuzu before, but I really like the songs. AVALANCHE PARTY PORCELAIN Boro band who are known for putting on an intense live show. Festival Fixers Marsicans

singer/guitarist James Newbigging helps navigate some totally realistic problems that definitely happen at summer festivals.

You’ve been waiting to see your favourite band on a small stage all day. It’s 5 mins before they’re due on, and it’s rammed so tight you can’t move. But - disaster! - you really, really need a wee. If you move, you’re not getting back in. Just how big of a festival monster are you, Marsicans?

If you have to, piss yourself, deal with it later. I’m not missing this.

Oh, bollocks. You’re at Glastonbury, and Michael Eavis has heard you laughing at his upside-down head! He’s gonna chuck you off site if you don’t think quick, and then you’ll never get to headline the main stage. Think quick! Head to the nearest clothes stall and get the most outrageous disguise I can find. And the best thing is at Glastonbury; you’ll fit right in whatever you’re wearing.

18

DORK

Your mate has bought a comedy jester hat. Your mate is insisting on offering everyone free hugs and was already ten tinnies deep before the festival gates opened. We’ve established by now your mate is a fucking nightmare, you really need better mates here. He keeps shouting ‘bollocks’ at 2am in the morning, and it’s starting to piss off some hefty lads who are camped nearby. This isn’t going to go well unless you deal with him or them. How? Tell them to chill out a bit. If they fail to revert into a manageable human being, ‘accidentally’ lose contact with them. Miss their phone calls, lose them in the crowd, whatever it takes. They’re not holding me back.

You’re trying to hang out with cooler people - you need to ditch that errant chum eventually - and you’ve agreed to go to A Very Cool Music Festival. But honestly, every act seems to be playing some form of East German Nose Jazz, and you’re bored out of your skull. How do you liven this one up?

We’ve all been there. There’s only one thing that can get you through it: get the pints in and go on an adventure.

You’re at an ‘inner city festival’, and there’s a huge queue for the venue where the buzz band you want to see is playing. Loads of people have been waiting for ages. At the front of the queue is a young megafan wearing all of your band’s merch, but you’ve got a wristband that lets you jump the line. A lone A&R staggers out of the venue, meaning it’s either you or them. Do you? DO YOU?!

That is a tough one. I actually once did it at Live at Leeds when The 1975 were playing at The Cockpit. There was a huge queue round the corner, and I waltzed to the front thinking I was Leo DiCaprio or something. I felt pretty baller doing it that day, so I think I’d probably do it again. I may hang my head in shame afterwards and beg for forgiveness, but it’d be worth it.

Foo Fighters have been playing for twenty-eight hours straight. Dave Grohl has been singing ‘the best the best the best of you’ for the last forty-eight minutes. There are other things you’d like to see on other stages, but you really wanted to hear ‘Everlong’, probably. Basically - at what point during a really long set should you bail?

It’s the last day of the festival, and you’ve just remembered it’s your mum’s birthday tomorrow. You’ve got some cash left over, but your only option is to find something on site. You’re gonna have to be creative. What’s the plan?

If there’s any official festival merchandise, I’d buy that. A poster, a keyring, whatever they’ve got. Alternatively, if there are any bands she likes playing, stage invade, grab a setlist and get kicked out of the festival. As it’s the last day, the risk isn’t too high, but the reward potential is.

It’s Latitude time, and your wanker mate is back. You get back to the tent, and he’s nicked one of the famous coloured sheep. You don’t want to ask questions but also he’s refusing to take it back, and if a steward sees you with it, you’re gonna be toast. How the fuck are we sorting this one out? First of all, get him on my side by calling him a ‘fucking legend’ for nicking it. As he now trusts me with the beloved sheep, I ask to borrow it. And... whoops, I’ve lost it! What a shame. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

You have to find an inner peace. If you know you’re happy with what you’ve seen, then it could be at any point during the set. If it’s my favourite ever song, there’s no way I’m leaving Grohl and the boys. If it’s a song that I would just really like to see, but I’ve already seen a fair few bangers, I’ll perform a quick statistical analysis in my head (a very complex procedure), and if there are other bands on my list, I’ll probably bail. I actually did this exact thing during the Foo Fighters set at Glastonbury a couple of years back, absolutely nailed it as well. I saw ‘Learn to Fly’ and loads of other bangers. I was content.

Marsicans play Live At Leeds (4th May) and more.

the arts and culture bill looks super interesting - what impact do events like this have on the creative community? I always see these things a chance for these little creative factions to come together and kind of showcase and be proud of what is going on across all mediums. That can be as organised or as loose as anyone wants it to be, really. It gives people a chance to connect and come up with new schemes. Where are the best hot spots for local talent at the mo?

Hey Liza, how’s it going? I’m good thanks, just unpacking a new synth that got delivered this morning, so I’m happy. What have you guys been up to since the release of ‘Black Rainbow Sound’, has it been a busy time for you? Must be nice to have it out. Yeah, it’s always a good feeling to put a record out when you’ve been cultivating it for ages. We toured it back in October, and since then we’ve been in the studio and writing a lot for a project that I can’t talk about quite yet. And searching out old synths.

How do you prepare for festival season? We’re working on some stuff for our live show and pushing the visual side of it a bit further; we really enjoyed that on the last album tour. Are you planning to attend any you’re not playing this summer? I reckon we’ll go to a few festivals we’re not playing yeah, depends what our friends are playing and how cheeky we are at jumping in vans with people. I want to go to Green Man and End of the Road. Long Division’s going to be fun,

Hyde Park Book Club is really good for new music or comedy or to see guest speakers, and they also host literary nights and debates. Outlaws Yacht Club always have good music and get really interesting people in to do talks. Wharf Chambers and the Brudenell are always the best for seeing local artists too. Are there any bands or artists on the Long Division line-up you’re especially keen to see? I’m looking forward to International Teachers of Pop, and also our lovely friends Cruel World and Cowtown. What advice would you give to anyone looking to get more involved in their local arts scene? Just to go to as many things as possible. There’s definitely a good art and music community in Leeds, and I’ve always found it to be collaborative rather than competitive. Most of the people I know and have made music with I’ve met at shows. Apart from that, just keep creating and show people what you’re doing. What else do you guys have coming up? We’re playing Live at Leeds, and working on a couple of new music projects that we’ll be revealing later in the year. P Menace Beach play Long Division (29th May-2nd June) and more.

Clash of the Titans

The times aren’t quite out yet, but it’s already looking like there’s going to be a buttload of clashes at Reading & Leeds this year. Bloxx frontwoman Fee Booth makes some tough decisions.

FRIDAY (READING) SATURDAY (LEEDS) Charli XCX vs No Rome I’d personally go see No Rome because I missed him on The 1975 tour. The Wombats vs Pale Waves vs Black Honey Hard to pick! I can’t pick between our guys in The Wombats or Pale Waves so I’d split myself in half for that one. Royal Blood vs Circa Waves Circa Waves just because they’re awesome people. But Moz would go to Royal Blood definitely. SATURDAY (READING) SUNDAY (LEEDS) Blossoms vs The Japanese House Well, that’s a no brainier: The Japanese House. Doesn’t matter that I’ve seen her before she just gets better and better. Twenty One Pilots vs Steflon Don Twenty One Pilots because apparently they put on a show and a half. Mura Masa vs Peace TOO HARD! I love both, but I’ve seen Peace so probably Mura Masa. SUNDAY (READING) FRIDAY (LEEDS) Distillers vs Anteros Anteros because I’ve been dying to see them! Chvrches vs FIDLAR vs SWMRS SWMRS cause they’re one big massive bop. Blaenavon vs Bastille vs Foo Fighters Blaenavon are babes, so Blaenavon. Bloxx play Liverpool Sound City (3rd-5th May), Dot to Dot (24th26th May), Reading & Leeds (23rd-25th August) and more.

Must Watch Slam Dunk 2019 Here’s a few of the bands we recommend you don’t miss if you’re heading to Slam Dunk this year.

THE MENZINGERS

Critical darlings, The Mezingers are sure to cause a stir when they hit our shores.

WATERPARKS

In Awsten Knight, Waterparks have a genuine scene icon in the making. Shiny pop punk is what Slam Dunk does best.

I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME

Lead vocalist and bassist Dallon Weekes - once of Panic! At The Disco fame - and drummer Ryan Seaman are already kicking up a storm. With magazine covers and a sizeable buzz already under their belt, check them out before they’re absolutely

massive.

EMPLOYED TO SERVE

With new album ‘Eternal Forward Motion’ set to land very soon indeed, Employed To Serve make an ungodly din - just the way we like it.

AS IT IS

A band transformed, As It Is’ most recent album ‘The Great Depression’ saw them tackling weighty issues via direct musical action. Now, with a series of reworkings of those tracks underway, this could be one of the more interesting sets of rock’s 2019 festival season.

Slam Dunk isn’t just an important part of the UK rock scene, but an international red letter weekend for bands unafraid to turn it up to eleven. Here’s some of what you can expect.

With a Slam Dunk headline set on the books we caught up with All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth Words: Ali Shutler.

Hey Alex! Last year was super busy for All Time Low, right? The last two years have been pretty crazy and pretty fun. We’ve been slammed. ‘The Last Young Renegades’ cycle was a good one. We went pretty deep. We circled the world twice. It was good to get it all in. So what’s 2019 got in store for you? We don’t have a whole lot of plans. Obviously, we’re coming over in May for Slam Dunk, but that’s the only thing we’ve got on the calendar right now which is definitely weird for us. Is that break to work on new music? The starting point is just to step away. There’s always new music in mind. We’re always asking ‘what’s the next thing going to be’, but as of right now, there’s

nothing official. We just want to take a step back, reflect, look at what we’ve accomplished and basically take stock in what we’ve got and figure out where we go from here. ‘What’s the logical next step for All Time Low?’ To do that, we need to step away from it. So you never feel like you have to take a break because it’s getting too much? Honestly, no. We had a really rad record cycle, and we’re one of those gluttons for punishment. We love being on the road. I hear all kinds of stories from other bands about how they get tired or burnt out, but we love being out there. We love playing shows, whether they’re massive shows or club shows or festivals. We just like getting in front of people. It never felt like it was taking a toll. It is super nice to get home and have a minute to yourself, but we’ve never felt like we need to

call time on it. It’s more a wellearned break, at this point. So, Slam Dunk.

You’ve gone from being a big band to being one of the biggest.

We’ve been very fortunate It’s going to be a blast. Last to continue to grow and be time we did, it was 2013. It’s able to pull off what we have exciting to come back and do done. It’s incredible to me that it again, especially headlining. people are still finding out There’s such a good lineup, about us and still spreading and it’s a really cool, straightthe word. At the same time, up punk rock show, which I we’ve always stayed true to think is the best thing. We do All Time Low. From record to lots of festivals, and they run record, we’ve done enough to the gambit from being very eclectic to this one, being much grow, change our style a little bit, make tweaks more in the and make wheelhouse adjustments of the world “Doing a punk rock and do things we came up that keep the in. That’ll be a festival is going to project exciting really fun way for people, even to come back be really fucking though we’re to the UK. Last time we many years into fun” were there, a career now, but ALEX GASKARTH we were it’s never gone headlining so far off the arenas, and it was very much rails that we’ve lost everybody. our own thing. We’ve been really lucky to find that perfect balance and find It feels like a lot has changed that cool niche in music where for the band since you last people still feel connected played. after all these years. That’s what allows us to come back Playing Slam Dunk in 2013 was time and time again, and put a big step up. It let us spread on bigger and better shows. our wings, especially in the UK. It’s all about picking how you Since then we’ve put out two or three more albums. We’ve been come back. And coming back around the world a thousand and doing Slam Dunk felt like more times, and had a lot more exactly the right thing to do. experience under our belts. Coming and doing a punk rock We were still finding our way festival is going to be really back then. It’s always been this fucking fun. I’m really looking slow growth for us. Now we’re forward to it. P coming back as a much more All Time Low play Slam Dunk realised version of ourselves. (25th-26th May).

Slam Dunk isn’t the only place you’ll find ‘the rock bands’ this year. Here’s five of the best louder sounds, as selected by the brilliant Boston Manor.

Valeras Not sure where they’re from; somewhere down south but they’re wicked. Moody riffs and super cool melodies. I managed to catch these guys on the introducing stage at Reading & Leeds last year, and I was blown away. If you’re headed to R&L this year, then make sure to catch them on the Festival Republic.

Trophy Eyes Making a quick stop on their way to world domination the Aussies will be playing Slam Dunk in May this year. Triple

J favourites and selling venues out all over America and Australia, they’ve been making waves with their latest venture ‘The American Dream’. The record’s great and they have a mental live show to boot; don’t miss it.

IDLES Sold out venues all over the world, nominated for a BRIT Award; their album ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance’ was my favourite (and many other people’s) of last year. This abrasiveness goes mainstream only once in a blue moon. This is a movement; don’t stay

indoors. They’re playing a handful of festivals this year including All Points East and Isle OF Wight.

Angel Du$t One of the Baltimore ‘Pop Wig’ projects. Perhaps somewhat lesser known than its sister bands Turnstile and Trapped Under Ice, but a personal favourite of mine. This is a really interesting project; it’s genre-bending, it’s fun, and it’s punk as hell. Their new album ‘Pretty Buff’ just came out on Roadrunner, and I love it. They’ll be playing this year’s Slam Dunk, and I’m gonna be there

watching them; you should too.

BLOXX Immensely talented fourpiece from London; huge hooks and something that treads a very measured line between rock, indie, pop and alternative. I saw these guys at R&L last year, they were ill and still put on a brilliant show; I’m gonna try to catch them this year on the Radio 1 Stage. Boston Manor play Slam Dunk (25th-26th May) and Reading & Leeds (23rd-25th August).

Essential Selections Theresa Jarvis from Yonaka makes your last minute packing dash a little bit easier.

Wet Wipes Cleanliness is essential if you’re gonna go the distance, and you gotta keep clean out in that field baby.

Dry shampoo An absolute essential to help you look a little bit cleaner when you’re sleeping in a tent in a field!

Water I’m the thirstiest girl alive, so I need to stack up on water to make sure I don’t succumb to thirst.

Girlfriends Always make sure you’re never going out by yourself into a festival, get yourself a good group of mates and go party together.

The Big Indie Quiz with The Night Cafe There are few festival line-ups this summer indie-er than Community. But just how good is the indie knowledge of newcomers The Night Cafe? We put them through their indie paces.

Fancy Dress I love getting dressed up and entering the bubble of another world for a few days, and I find fancy dress really helps you lose yourself. P Yonaka play All Points East (31st May), This Is Tomorrow (24th-26th May), Neighbourhood Weekender (25th26th May) and more.

Which track did The Strokes have to leave off the US release of their iconic debut album ‘Is This It?’, which still packs festival fields to this day and remains one of their biggest tracks? The Night Cafe: We don’t know, but we’re gonna say ‘Reptillia’ cause it was on Rock Band! Answer: Sorry, it was ‘New York City Cops’. 0/1 According to The Automatic - what was apparently coming over the hill? The Night Cafe: Is it a monster? Answer: Yes! It is a monster. 1/2 How long did it take The Libertines’ frontman Pete Doherty to finish the ‘Mega Breakfast’ at Dalby Cafe in Margate? The Night Cafe: We heard it took him a while, like. Answer: Pete scoffed the food in less than 20 minutes, beating the caf’s breakfast challenge. 1/3 What did Alex Turner famously drop at the BRIT Awards in 2014? The Night Cafe: Haha, he dropped da mic. Answer: Yep. 2/4 Orlando, Felix, Hugo, Rupert and Sam are the first names of what beloved indie band? The Night Cafe: The Maccabees, real og’s. Answer: Obviously. 3/5 Which indie guitarist scored a famous wonder-goal on Soccer AM, that is still hailed as one of the best seen on the show? The Night Cafe: Kasabian’s guitarist, Sergio Pizzorno. Lovely little chip up to himself then volleyed it straight home! Should name himself Sergio Aguero! Answer: Worldie. 4/6

Fantasy Festival Who’d be on your fave bands’ dream line-ups?

We’ve put precisely zero thought into who’d play Dork’s Fantasy Festival, but there’s a good chance it’d include at least three of the acts Sea Girls here have picked. Which three? You’ll just have to guess, won’t you.

50

DORK

The Japanese House ‘Good At Falling’ is probably one of our favourite albums of the year so far, and she’s someone we love seeing live every time we’ve caught them.

Gang Of Youths We played before these guys at Citadel last year, and they just tore it down, big songs and a big show.

Mitski Mitski has been the

soundtrack to our last three tours, so it just feels right to have them play our fantasy festival line-up. The critical acclaim is so well deserved.

Frank Sinatra hologram show Let’s get a bit of tech and timelessness involved, imagine this at 2am on a Monday morning as reality slowly creeps back in.

Arcade Fire They put on one of the best shows we’ve been

to, so it’s a safe bet to keep the punters happy.

Billie Eilish We love everything she does, and it just makes sense to have the biggest new star, right? Catch us side of stage having the time of our lives. Sea Girls play Live At Leeds (4th May), Community (30th June), Sounds of the City (12th July) and more.
