Burnt Uber driver dies

By KGOMOTSO MDUPE AN UBER driver who was burnt inside his car has died. The person allegedly responsible for the attack outside Loftus Stadium in Tshwane last month was a metered taxi driver. Uber driver Lindelani Mashau’s car was set alight while he was Daily Sun, 28 inside it after a Spring- June bok Test match at the stadium. He sustained serious injuries. Uber confirmed his death yesterday morning. Last month, the company said it was implementing safety features, such as GPS tracking for every trip. The company has also hired security response teams in areas where drivers and customers had reported intimidation. Uber spokeswoman Samantha Allenberg said they were aware of intimidation at Gautrain stations across the province. “We have private security on site monitoring and managing the situation to ensure reliable service. “We have requested an urgent meeting with Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula and Minister of Transport Joe Maswanganyi to resolve this situation, and we are still waiting for their response.” Uber has appealed to the police to help stop attacks on its drivers. “We cannot do this alone. The authorities need to take a stronger stand to help prevent these terrible crimes.”

SASSA BOSS RESIGNS! ‘They want to intimidate Magwaza’ By MISHECK MAKORA SASSA CEO Thokozani Magwaza has resigned after reportedly receiving death threats. The news of his resignation was confirmed by Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini. According to News24, Dlamini said the decision followed a consultative process led by the head of legal services, Advocate Nkosinathi Dladla. Magwaza allegedly received death threats to force him to stop the contract between Sassa and the South African Post Office. Magwaza told Daily Sun: “The case is already in the hands of crime intelligence and the protection unit.” He said he hadn’t

received any protection, but wouldn’t disclose when he started receiving the threats. Themba Godi, Standing Committee on Public Accounts chairman, condemned the threats. He said they came from people who did not want the new deal with the post office to go through. “We are shocked and angry at what is evidently brazen lawlessness.” He said people wanted to intimidate Magwaza out of his job so they could damage the Sassa-Sapo contract and open the door for looting of public funds. Godi supported Magwaza and said he must stay where he is. “It is shocking that Dlamini has not said a word or stood in solidarity with Mr Magwaza,” said Godi. “There is an orchestrated campaign to remove Magwaza, all in circumstances that point to conflict of interest with their political principles.” Daily Sun spoke to Dlamini’s spokeswoman, Lumka Oliphant, who said neither the minister, nor the department, was aware of threats against Magwaza. “He didn’t officially report death threats to the minister or the department,” said Oliphant.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 But when Daily Sun asked Mandla, the chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council, what Madiba would have said about the current situation in the ANC, he said he could not speak on behalf of his grandfather. “I wouldn’t want to be presumptuous about what Madiba would have said,” said Mandla. “But I think it was always important for his collective and his generation to have a united ANC.” He said if there was anything that Tata tried to do it was to keep the ruling party united, but today the ANC is divided and torn apart by factionalism. He said Madiba told him to go and serve his great-

grandfather’s people in Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape, where Madiba was born. “I was very aware of taking responsibility for leading our royal family’s traditional council.” He said was hesitant when he was approached by the ANC to come to the National Assembly because that meant leaving his community in Mvezo and moving to Cape Town. “Not only do you cut your ties with your own rural area, you also cut ties with all rural areas throughout South Africa.” Mandla said it was a great recognition of Madiba’s achievements of serving the nation and humanity for 67 years that his birthday had been embraced by the United Nations as International Mandela Day. “The Mandela family has followed that call to ensure that we call on people in the global community to embrace

Mandela Day and ensure that they are able to support the initiative through acts of service to the people.” He said the family has been involved in the Stop Hunger initiative and have been donating food to underprivileged communities. In Joburg and East London, they have managed to pack 750 000 food parcels. He said on Sunday they went to Mvezo and distributed food parcels. When asked what young people should do to ensure that Madiba’s legacy lives on, Mandla said: “Most importantly, we need to work on uniting our nation because that was Madiba’s vision, and ensure we have a great nation. “We must focus not only on the rights of the majority but make sure the rights of the minority groups are also protected.”

By MFUNDEKELWA MKHULISI THE DA has called on Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, to decide by Friday whether or not she’ll allow a secret ballot. Opposition parties have asked for the motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma, to be debated on 8 August, to be conducted by secret ballot. The Constitutional Court ruled last month that Mbete has the power to decide on the issue DA chief whip John Steenhuisen said there was no reason why Mbete could not communicate her decision by Friday. “It is our belief that there is no reason why the Speaker cannot apply her mind and duly communicate her decision by the close of business this Friday, instead of waiting until a day or two before the vote, as Mbete suggested in a

recent interview.” Steenhuisen said Mbete’s decision must be rational. “It’s the Speaker and only the Speaker who can decide if voting on 8 August will proceed via secret ballot. “We emphasised this in a letter responding to her curious request for political parties to submit their views regarding their preferred means of voting. “Mbete rarely concerns herself with the views of other political parties or even opposing views within the ANC.” Steenhuisen said the DA wanted to see Mbete removing herself from presiding over the debate as she had a long history of bias in defence of Zuma. “She is not suitable to preside over this important debate,” he said.

THE TRAIN ROLLS ON, SAYS SAM!

Stimela’s vocalist, Sam Ndlovu, says he’s been on an emotional rollercoaster since Ray Phiri died.

He has to fill his mentor’s big shoes By LERATO MATSOSO SAM Ndlovu is a bit nervous, now that he has to take over as lead singer of legendary band Stimela. “They’re the fire that carries you,” he said. “The band is so tight. You won’t make a mistake. “The song goes on and the train goes on!” He told Daily Sun that since losing Ray Phiri, he’s been on an emotional rollercoaster. “It takes just one thing to trigger them,” said Sam, who’s been rocking with the band since 2010. Sam, from Mbombela in Mpumalanga, was mentored by Ray, who had taken him under his wing.

“Stimela is a people’s band. They’ve always been for the development of up-and-coming artists,” he said. Sam said he was in a band called Black Chain in the 1980s and early 1990s when he was spotted by Stimela. They began performing at festivals where Stimela was playing, which gave them confidence. His relationship with the band grew and on 17 November 2010 after the death of Bra Nana Coyote, he got a call from Ray. “Wenzani kusasa (What are you doing tomorrow)”, Ray wanted to know, and asked him to come to Joburg because they were launching the album A Lifetime.

3

Sam said the number seven played a big role in their relationship. “Ray was born in 1947, I was called on the 17th, Ray died in the seventh month of 2017 at the age of 70 and in the seventh year of my involvement with Stimela,” he said. He said when he was with Ray, it felt like no one could touch him. “Chikapa was a perfectionist. He would make you enjoy rehearsals so much and when you got on stage it would all make sense,” said Sam. “We’ll make sure Ray’s legacy continues. He died while we were putting something together and we’ll honour him with that project.”

Kasi youth band changed lives When the artist left, all the kids begged Daniel to buy them guitars. “They all asked for the instruments, but I explained that we couldn’t afford it because guitars were too expensive,” he said. Realising how shattered they were, he decided to ask for donations. After five years, Daniel finally managed to buy various instruments for the youths. The rest, as they say, is history and this year Mamelodi West Holy Pentecostal Brass Band is celebrating 33 years and still going strong. Daniel said he realised that all the kids who started the band grew up to be responsible adults. “It’s true that music helps kids develop skills from a young age. I’ve witnessed it.

“I feel very happy when I hear them play.” Daniel said when he saw how serious the kids were to succeed in life he offered to help them do their homework. “I was proud of township kids being serious about their lives and rising up.” Chairwoman Bonolo Mashilo (33), said she started volunteering at the facility when she was only 10 years old. She said at the time she didn’t understand why her uncle, Daniel, urged her to volunteer. But she continued and until today, not a day has passed that she hasn’t been to the centre. “I’ve seen so many kids who have made something of their lives so I will continue to play my part.”

By LONA MOHLOMI GOOD Samaritan Daniel Mashilo (75) of Mamelodi West in Tshwane opened his house to kids so they could better their lives back in 1961. In an age where blacks were oppressed, Daniel realised there was a need to contribute towards building a better future for the youth of his kasi. But what started off as an afterschool care centre turned into something much bigger, when music touched their souls. Daniel said at the time he owned two houses and he wanted the kids to be off the streets, doing something that would benefit them. But things changed when one day they had a visitor who played guitar for the kids.

Lovers die together in blazing fire!

DAD’S WORST NIGHTMARE

Joseph failed to save son from burning shack Steven Maphanga stands next to the room where his niece and her lover lived in Eikenhof. Photo by Stephens Molobi By STEPHENS MOLOBI WHEN Hendrick Matome met Betty Maphanga five years ago, it was love at first sight. But in the early hours of Sunday morning, the couple’s big plans for the future went up in flames when they burned to death in a fire. Hendrick (46) and Betty (42) had been living together for four years on a plot in Eikenhof, Joburg and planned to get married. Hendrick had planned to start lobola negotiations for Betty this Saturday. Betty and Hendrick were fast asleep when the flames crept up on them and devoured them. It’s not known what caused the fire but both their families demand answers. Betty’s uncle, Steven Maphanga, said: “What has happened is a tragedy for all of us. This week, we were supposed to meet the Matome family for a good purpose. Now we will be united through death.” “Betty and Hendrick were living like animals in a small room but they were planning to better their lives. We think

maybe they were trying to get warm and forgot to switch off the stove. They died in such a cruel way but they will be remembered forever.” Hendrick’s brother, Kingsley Makgato, said he last spoke to his brother on the day he died. “He was a very special man with a good heart. What happened to him really disturbs the family. Hendrick’s remains were found near the door and we are convinced he was trying to open it. He had great plans for Betty.” An inquest docket was opened at De Deur Police Station and cops are investigating.

By EVERSON LUHANGA and SIBONELO ZWANE WHEN Joseph Chauke left his one-year-old son at home while he went to buy the evening meal, he had no idea the boy would soon be dead. The 34-year-old dad said when he returned home on Saturday night, he found a massive fire had started at the squatter camp where he lived. Joseph’s shack was just one of 120 that went up in flames in the fire at an abandoned factory in Marlboro near Alexandra, northern Joburg. “When I arrived back from Pan Africa Mall, the fire had just started inside the abandoned building where we erect-

ed shacks. I rushed to my room and saved my four-year-old son but when I returned for my other child, the fire was too strong to get to him,” he said. Joseph said by the time firefighters arrived and the flames were put out, his son had already died from smoke inhalation. Another victim, Maria Sebola (41), said she lost all her belongings. “All I have are the clothes I was wearing on the night of the fire,” she said. Meanwhile, Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile is demanding that the owners of illegally occupied and run-down buildings in the province come forward with

proof of ownership. His spokesman Mogomotsi Mogodiri said the owners needed to bring their safety certificates as the provincial government wanted to ensure the province was safe and crime free. City of Joburg emergency services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said the fire on Saturday night left more than 1 000 people displaced and killed one person. “The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Our fire investigation team is working to determine the cause,” he said. For emergencies, call 10177 on a Telkom landline, 112 on your cellphone or 011 375 5911.

“Just wait until the forensic van comes to fetch the bodies and then we can do our job,” said a resident. Late on Sunday afternoon, residents allegedlycaught five suspects – some allegedly still with blood on their clothes – and questioned them in the community hall. The men allegedly confessed that they had killed the two men and residents started to assault them. Four of them managed to escape but one was beaten to death. Residents also demolished the shacks of the suspects. “We are sick and tired of cops who don’t do their jobs. When we found the suspects and beat one to death they were quick to rush to the scene,” said a resident. Western Cape police spokesman

THEY TRIED TO BURN ME ALIVE! Thugs wanted gogo’s stokvel money

By JOSHUA SEBOLA GOGO Johanna Nkuna (77) is lucky to be alive. This is after two thugs attacked her at home, looking for her R3 000 stokvel payout. Not only did the thugs get her cash. They continued to beat her with a steel rod and then tried to burn her alive! Gogo Johanna from Tshamahansi Village, outside Mokopane, Limpopo said she believed a quick prayer saved her from certain death. She told Daily Sun she was happy after receiving R3 000 from her stokvel earlier on Sunday.

“It was around midnight when they managed to break down my door with a steel rod. “One of them held a small torch and they came towards my bedroom. “They first went outside again, I believe to check if my neighbours had heard the noise. Then they came back into the house and handcuffed me. “They choked me, demanding money,” gogo said. After she told them where the money was, the thugs beat her with the steel rod over the head and she passed out. The thugs then put her on her bed and set her alight.

By SIFISO JIMTA and NEWS24 IT’S BEEN over a month since Eskom employee Thembisile Yende was murdered. And her family is getting frustrated! News24 reported yesterday that her mum Nesta said she would only find closure once the masterminds behind her daughter’s murder were found. She was speaking outside the Springs Magistrates Court in Ekurhuleni.

“As I felt the heat from the fire I regained consciousness and opened my eyes. “I immediately prayed, crying ‘Jesu ntamolele!’ (Jesus save me!) “The thug who was making the fire stronger left the house running.” Gogo Johanna said she was in pain. The thugs managed to get away with R3 000 that she had been saving with other women over the past few months.

Community headman Thomas Hlongwane said he was deeply upset by what had happened to gogo Johanna and called on residents to help hunt down the thugs. “I urge people not to leave elderly relatives living alone. Let’s find another way so that our elders are safe all the time,” he said. Mahwelereng police said they were investigating cases of robbery, arson and attempted murder.

Community terrorised by gang By ZAMOKUHLE MDLULI THE gatvol people of Soul City squatter camp want the Basotho Boys gang, also known as the Russians, to leave the area. Community leader Bheki Sangweni told Daily Sun the gang was terrorising residents of the squatter camp in Kagiso, Mogale City. Bheki said in the space of a month, the Russians had seriously injured five people and the police haven’t done a thing. “Three weeks ago, they stabbed a man in the heart. They stabbed another before scooping out his eyes and cutting off his lower lip.” A woman (25) said she was on her way home from work when men wearing blankets and balaclavas

beat her up for no reason. Another victim, Themba Shilowa (32), told the SunTeam he was attacked on his way to the tavern. “There were about six of them dressed the same. They stabbed me in the stomach.” Themba said they took his shoes, jacket and cellphone. Themba’s wife Selebaleng Mabeyana (39) said she was shocked to find him holding his intestines. “Cops told me I couldn’t open a case because I didn’t know who had stabbed me,” said Themba. Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso police spokesman, said cops weren’t allowed to send victims away. He advised victims to return to the police station to open cases.

Thembisile’s former lover David Ngwenya appeared briefly in the morning. “I’m still in pain. On the IN 17th of every month I’ll THE remember how my child was found decomposed,” said Nesta. David’s case was postponed to Monday, 18 September for further investigation. The 43-year-old, who was denied bail last month, has changed his lawyer since his

After viewing the video of a man pushing and slapping a woman in a parking lot, Pastor Moses Moyaki of Kliptown, Soweto, said: “When will it end?” Limpopo police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said: “This woman needs to open a case so the man can be arrested.” The video was posted on Facebook last week by Musa Mathebula. In the video, apparently filmed in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, the man is seen pushing the woman on to the ground next to his BMW before hitting her. He then takes off his T-shirt and kicks the woman. Her hair is pulled and she’s thrown to the ground a number of times. Bystanders start screaming but the beating continues. Eventually, a group of men come to the woman’s rescue and a fight breaks out between them and the man. Many who have seen the video on Facebook praised Musa for sharing it.

RDP BECOMES A DEN FOR THUGS! By MZAMANI MATHYE AT NIGHT when the village is dark and quiet, loud screams can be heard from the run-down RDP house. This is because thugs who hide out in the empty house rob villagers of their money and cellphones! Tsakani Mahuhushu (43), a resident of Xikundu Village outside Malamulele in Limpopo, told Daily Sun thugs had turned the area into their playground. “I live near this RDP house and every night, I’m woken up by the screams of victims being robbed.” Tsakani said the problem started last year when thugs started targeting residents as they walked to the local taxi rank in the morning. “Those who work in towns far away leave their homes as early as 4am. As they walk past this RDP house, they are robbed,” she said. Tsakani said she lived in fear. “I’m scared that one day these criminals will break into my house and rape me. I

appeal to the cops to do something about this situation before it’s too late.” Resident Gezani Chauke (36) said he was robbed of his wallet and cellphone on Saturday night. “It happened at about 10pm on my way back from work in Giyani. “I’m grateful to God that these evil thugs didn’t kill me,” he said.

By REGINALD KANYANE THESE workers want better working conditions and full-time jobs. But the Naledi Municipality in the North West has allegedly run out of money! The sanitation workers said they faced bad working conditions daily, and were gatvol of being paid peanuts. Archison Mokgantsang said: “I’ve been a casual worker for more OO O O FFTH TH EE than seven years. “The working conditions have remained unchanged. We’re exposed to health problems daily. “We’re also being paid peanuts, compared to other sewage workers at other municipalities. I have two kids. I support my younger brother, who’s at varsity.”

Another worker, Collen Sejake, said they earn R4 000 a month. “We sometimes find dead babies in the sewerage system,” he said. “We also don’t have medical aid and occupational safety clothes.” Municipal spokeswoman Kgomotso Mmusi said the municipality provided safety clothes for the workers. “But the municipality doesn’t have funds to employ people permanently.” “We’ll consider that only when the municipality is able to. For now, we’re facing financial difficulties.” Mmusi told Daily Sun that only permanent workers got subsidised medical aid. “Counselling was available and staff members with problems had been referred for further assistance,” she said.

Amazing adventures start at KFC.

By NTEBATSE MASIPA EKURHULENI Municipality is erecting shacks to temporarily house the residents of Angelo squatter camp. But the residents say they are not going anywhere! They insist that they are not going to be moved from their shacks and sent to other shacks. Residents of the squatter camp were told they will be moved to temporary shelters at Knights in Germiston soon. On Wednesday they marched to the municipal offices to hand in a memorandum. “The municipality is taking us for granted. They tell us we are going to stay there temporarily but we know it is going to be forever,” said one resident. “We have so many examples of people being moved and told they were there temporarily, but to this day they are still there. We’ll move from here only when we are given permanent homes.

We want houses.” But the municipality said the residents had no choice but to move. The land on which they are living belongs to a company called Living Africa One. The company took the municipality to court to demand that the shacks were removed. However, not all residents are staying put. Some told Daily Sun they will take up the opportunity because they don’t know what is going to happen. “The company which owns this land may send Red Ants to evict us, and then where will we go? “Where the municipality is planning to send us is better than here. Here, people die like flies.” Municipal spokesman Themba Gadebe said the municipality is in the process of erecting shelters to temporarily house the residents. “The municipality has already erected slabs where the shacks will be built.”

BODY FOUND LYING IN A DITCH!

People don’t know how the man died By VELANI LUDIDI THE body of a 38-year-old Zimbabwean Gerard Masocha was found in Broadlands Road, Strand on Sunday. The body was lying in shallow water in a canal. A witness said it must have been there the whole of Saturday night, in the heavy rain. “I noticed there was something there at about 11pm, but did not know it was a human body. “I was scared to look because it was in the middle of the night

and it was raining,” the 27-yearold told Daily Sun. The dead man’s brother, Ephraim Masocha, said he received a call from his brother but did not answer because he was busy. He said his brother left him a message. “He said he was leaving and going back home to Zimbabwe and would not come back. I think that is why he called me. He wanted to tell me he was leaving,” said Ephraim. He said his brother was a good man but a heavy drinker.

“He drank a lot, but he was a good man who would never hurt anyone. His death is sudden. “He was not only my older brother but a father and a husband. He has two children and a wife,” said Ephraim. Residents were sad to see the body. Anelisa Mfenyana (26) said: “He lived close by. Maybe he was going back home to his house 20 metres from here. “This is sad. We don’t know what happened to him. We hope he was not being robbed.”

TROUBLE IN VIOLENT KENYA NAIROBI, KENYA KENYANS are dying after an outbreak of disease after increasing violence, security challenges and the health workers’ strike. Schools and hospitals also have been shut because of clashes in the East African country. These crises have worsened in recent weeks, leading to a rise in cholera, black fever, dengue fever and measles. Twelve deaths have been reported from 1 067 cases of cholera in the Garissa, Muranga, Nairobi, Turkana and Wajir provinces while black fever has killed seven people out of 277 cases. One person has died from dengue fever,

34 missing after military boat sinks

DOUALA, CAMEROON MORE than 30 people are missing after a boat belonging to an elite Cameroonian military unit sank off the coast on Sunday. The boat belonged to the Rapid Intervention Brigade, which has fought Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram in recent years. It was carrying 37 people when it capsized on Sunday morning. with 1 200 cases reported in Mombasa and Wajir. While there have been no recorded deaths from the measles outbreak in Garissa and Mandera, the United Nations Children’s Fund said the situation is very serious. Random strikes by health workers are negatively affecting health and nutrition services in the affected provinces. The strike has brought fixed, outreach and mobile public health care services in all health facilities to a halt. It has heavily affected health services, including routine vaccination and skilled deliveries. Violence keeps delaying provision of basic services, especially health and nutrition, with four health facilities along the Kenya-Somalia border closed. Fourteen health facilities are now closed due to continued violence among various groups. This comes while implementing partners, including the children’s fund, have shut down humanitarian operations to ensure the safety of their staff. At least eight schools have been closed due to conflict over water and grazing fields in drought-affected areas. With general elections only a month away, the situation is expected to get worse as international observers have warned of the possibility of more violence. – CAJ NEWS

Nine drown in Arizona flash flood

PHOENIX, ARIZONA AT LEAST nine people drowned while swimming in a river when they were overwhelmed by flash flooding. This followed heavy rain in the drought-stricken region. Medical district fire chief Ron Sattelmaier said on Sunday that authorities were searching for at least one other missing person after the incident on Saturday afternoon in the Verde River, near Payson. Local media reported at least two children were among the dead. The Gila County sheriff’s office did not

give details of the dead or missing. A search-and-rescue operation was under way involving sheriff’s deputies and the department of public safety ranger helicopter. Members of the local Whispering Pines fire department were also involved. There was also concern over possible flash flooding in southern Arizona. The National Weather Service said most of Arizona was under flash flood watch warning that heavy rain could produce flash flooding in low lying, normally dry areas such as washes. – REUTERS

MAKING MEMORIES By SIFISO JIMTA ADVOCATE George Bizos is fondly remembered as a humanitarian and for his achievements as a human rights lawyer. He is also remembered for his lifelong friendship with Nelson Mandela. Bizos told the People’s Paper about some of the cherished memories he shared with his bosom friend. They shared more moments than many of the people who knew him and he misses him every day. Bizos said he was an articled clerk when he saw Madiba at Alfred Kahn’s shop being fitted for a new suit. “I was there to collect a list of Kahn’s customers who had not paid their accounts. “Mandela was there for a final fitting of a suit that had been specially tailored for him,” said Bizos. He said his friendship with Mandela was formed in the corridors of the courts. “When you aren’t allowed to have a friendship it makes you closer.” Bizos said although Mandela did not drink, he was always a good host and served wine to his guests. “I remember the day when he was expecting guests and also three lawyers – myself, Dullah Omar and Ismail Ayob for lunch. “He arranged some special Nederburg wine for us,” said Bizos. Not all of Bizos’ memories are good. “On the night before Mandela’s sentencing, the death sentence was on the cards

Gogo Emily Bopapi and Richard Ntshingila live in the yard in Alexandra where Nelson Mandela once rented a room. Photos by Everson Luhanga By EVERSON LUHANGA GOGO Emily Bopapi (83) lived at house number 46 in Alexandra’s 7th Avenue, where Nelson Mandela rented a room for a short while. The late former president arrived in Joburg in 1941. He stayed briefly at Crown Mines, Joburg, before moving to Alexandra in 1942. “It was a wonderful time when Mandela came to stay with us in this yard,” she said. “People flocked to his small room and we were all happy and blessed.”

She said he didn’t stay in the room long, but her memories of him will never fade. “He treated us with respect and he had a great sense of humour,” she said. “He kept us laughing. He always spoke of love and forgiveness.” Richard Ntshingila moved into the yard in 1983, long after the great man had left. In fact, Madiba was in jail at the time. “I worship the ground he walks on. It’s a blessing to know that he also stayed here,”

said Richard (49). He said it’s a shame that the yard is run-down and needs to be fixed. There is also a heritage site across the road that has been under construction since 2001. “We’ve lost all hope that it will ever be finished and serve its purpose among the people of Alexandra,” he said. Moses Sebidi (38) also stays in the yard. “I wish we could have another Mandela who will save and serve this country,” said Moses.

By SIFISO JIMTA A BEADING contest was held to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela School Library Project. The school library project fixes books and donates fully stocked container libraries to underprivileged schools across the country. Gogos and madalas from Cape Town are paired with celebrities to do beadwork in the fourth annual Relate Trust’s beading challenge. The teams use beads to make bracelets which are sold for R67 at selected Tourvest destination retail stores. Celebrities like soccer player Matthew Booth and rapper Quintin “Jitsvinger” Goliath took

part in the beading challenge in previous years. This year they were joined by fresh faces such as radio presenter Lindy Hibbard, TV presenter Zoe Brown and food stylist Zola Nene. This year, the teams had exactly 67 minutes to plan, design and thread a bracelet. A team of judges rated the teams on their spirit, threading technique and use of colour. The bracelets can be won in a lucky draw. Relate Bracelets CEO Neil Robinson said: “We felt this event would be a fitting tribute to Madiba. It was also our way of celebrating the elderly folks who work hard to produce the bracelets that support worthy causes.”

TATA WAS A TRUE LEADER! By SIFISO JIMTA IT HAS been more than three years since the death of Tata Madiba, but not a day goes by that his former personal assistant Zelda La Grange doesn’t think of him. Zelda, who was his assistant for 19 years, said Madiba always greeted her with his famous smile. “Regardless of the pressure we were under or how much turmoil we faced, that smile would reduce the burden,” said Zelda. “When I see the chaos in the ruling party, I miss him even more. “I miss his company and the responsibility of looking after him.” Zelda said Madiba warned against people positioning themselves for personal gain. “I can’t say much about this other than to remind people Madiba and his generation sacrificed so much for us.” She said Mandela always said one doesn’t have to occupy a position of importance to improve the lives of others. He also warned her to always guard against self-interest. “He was an authentic leader. “Every day I saw him apply the values and principles he stood for. “His consistency created the foundation South Africa need-

ed to flourish.” Zelda said the government should never forget that Madiba was a revolutionary. “Even after his retirement he continued to fight for the freedom and equality to which he dedicated his life. “We cannot expect unity if we continue to set the norm that unethical behaviour has become acceptable. “I hope on Mandela Day people will think about their behaviour and how that sets the climate in South Africa.”

No song and dance . . .

“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. before he got into a helicopter. He was very kind. He smiled at me and asked me how I was. I’ll always cherish that moment. “Something I particularly value about Madiba’s life was his passion for education. “I’m completing my own university education and working hard to instil its importance in young people.” As leader of the troubled Thembu nation, Azenathi has had a big responsibility. “Madiba was a humble man, even though he was celebrated throughout the world,” he said. “That is an important leadership trait to learn from him. We thank and respect him for his sacrifices for our country. I wish to always be inspired by him and continue where he left off. “Every day must be a tribute to him and his spirit of kindness.”

ROAD DEATHS CAN BE REDUCED! T

he number of pedestrians who die in road accidents on a daily basis is shocking. That means pedestrians, drivers and all road users must work together to avoid more deaths. Motorists must refrain from speeding in zones where road signs instruct them to slow down. They mustn’t assume that pedestrians can see them. The drivers must always be on the lookout for pedestrians walking on the side of the road. Beware, as small children and stray animals may cross the road

at any time. Drive slowly and carefully when you’re close to schools. Actually, be sensitive whenever you see children playing. We must also slow down at bus stops. Otherwise we might crash into commuters who’ve just been dropped off. Drive slowly in low visibility caused by bad weather or the headlights of ap-

proaching vehicles. Pedestrians must also prioritise their safety when walking on the streets. They must walk on the side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. Those who have been drinking mustn’t walk alone on the road. It’s safer to cross the street at a pedestrian bridge or crossing line. Respect and obey traffic lights. Where there are no formal crossing points, look both ways before crossing. Make eye contact with the driver to ensure they can see you before crossing. Small children must never be allowed

Give CEOs of state companies the boot The only reason state-owned entities keep asking the government to bail them out is because they misuse their money. They keep paying their CEOs for doing nothing. Companies usually give bonuses to employees who have performed exceptionally well. Such employees do not exist at Eskom. I am sure technicians and other members of staff do not receive the same bonuses as their bosses. If failing the country is worthy of a bonus, then we have really set our standards low. The situation at Eskom is going to come back to haunt the power utility’s board members. Why are they getting bonuses anyway? They are paid huge salaries

) We’ve seen an increase in the number of pedestrian deaths on our roads. This shocking increase should be a worry. It can’t be a cause for concern only during the Easter and December holidays. This letter wins R200. Call Nthabiseng to collect. – Editor

Blessed is the hand that gives

which people in the private sector would envy. Opposition parties need to make sure the request for more money is turned down. We are tired of hearing them complain about Eskom. It is time for the opposition to take serious action. Even if citizens raise their concerns, the government will just listen and do nothing about it. This is why opposition parties need to put pressure on state-owned entities. The sooner Eskom and SAA are privatised, the better. Unfortunately, this will not happen, as there will be no more jobs for government cronies. ) Rachel Molema Theresa Mews

Anonymous The country is on autopilot with no leadership. Crime is out of control, unemployment is high, corruption rages on, and there are more and more road crashes. Mahakoe Sepeng, Ngobi The re-election of comrade Blade Nzimande as the general secretary of SACP is not only commendable but a wise move.

did nothing to prevent state property in Vuwani from being destroyed. While they were being pampered at a brothel in Mpumalanga, over 20 schools were torched. This brainless minister needs to be fired and charged for defeating the ends of justice. ) Bushy Green, Kagiso

Yust Mphahlele The shooting of councillors in KZN is just the way the current government does things.

Today is Mandela Day. It’s a day when we are all expected to devote 67 minutes of our time to helping the needy. South Africa is a country that has a huge gap between the rich, middle class and the poor. Today serves as a perfect reminder, while we throw away our leftovers, some people sleep on empty stomachs. We have enough food to feed the whole country, and it’s a pity that some don’t have access to that food. And when they try to make a living, rich people use their financial muscle to exploit them. The Bible says: “Blessed is the hand that gives. We must develop the habit of

helping the needy to help themselves. This special day is important and it should serve as a starting point for us to help the needy whenever we can. We must always remember that for poor people, filling their stomachs is a daily struggle. Those who are wealthy must remember, success is not measured by the material possessions they have, it’s measured by the difference they make in other people’s lives. So make it your duty to comfort a miserable soul and help revive hope to the hopeless. Put a smile on someone’s face today so that their tomorrow becomes a brighter day. ) Percy Moffat

Abusing women is wrong It’s really sad that women continue to be victims of abuse in society. In most cases, some of them end up being raped or brutally killed. We’re supposed to protect women and not abuse them. It’s shocking to read or hear stories of how a woman was raped or brutally killed. There shouldn’t be a point where a man sees it necessary to beat or kill a woman. The duty of a man is to protect his wife and kids. Abusing your wife or kids in totally wrong.

Your family is important, so you need to put their safety first. Most of the men often see women as punching bags who can’t fight back. Such behaviour must stop! I wonder how you would feel if your sister was constantly being abused by her partner? I doubt you would say she deserved it . . . Men, let’s all respect our women because they’re special in society. ) Meshack Mathe Vosloorus

Divorce is avoidable Fight for, not against, young addicts

Divorce is actually a relatively modern thing and it poses serious challenges in our culture. Research done in 2015 indicates that the divorce rate has risen and reached 42,9%! What is the problem? Where did it all go wrong? Who is to blame for this? Marriage is the most beautiful thing. Weddings don’t just bring two people together, but two families.

The golden rule is that couples should take time to get to know each other before tying the knot. My favourite part of a white wedding is when couples tell stories from their shared histories, including how they met. The vows are my second favourite part of a wedding. When you say until death do us part, you should mean every word. ) Godfrey Malibe, Acornhoek

Residents who stoop to killing their own troublesome kids truly have to understand their power. How do you kill a drug addict and leave the drug dealer behind and then declare victory? Just how long will that victory last? How long before the drug dealer finds yet another youth to use? We act in anger, not wisdom. If we acted wisely, we would take on the long and difficult task of helping youth stay away from lives of trouble. We would make it our business to find out why our teenagers easily

fall prey to these destructive lifestyles of substance abuse. And truly, we would fight for them to get back on the mend rather than fight them to their death. One does not excuse the poor and sometimes criminal behaviour of youths. But going around stoning and burning our kids cannot be the best solution and doesn’t solve anything. The same community of adults who aren’t fighting for young people to have sporting facilities, art centres, libraries and institutions to help shape the lives of our youth

cannot be surprised when youths lose their way. But that’s exactly what we do. We don’t fight for the best for our youths but rage against their worst actions. When will the real adults stand up? Proverbs 22:15 says: “Foolishness is bound to the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it out. Let us dig into our wisdom and find that rod to correct what is wrong with our youth. Murder won’t help us. ) Christopher Mazibuko Pretoria

I was once in their shoes and know their struggle. “It is hard to get gigs and get your big break if people don’t know you. “The show is an opportunity to introduce new comedians to the people and help build their brands. He said: “This is my way of packaging my material and selling it to people. After this show I will be performing new material.”

Rookie singer hopes for a fair chance!

Mduduzi Ntuli has been nominated for the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards again.

By EVERSON LUHANGA WILMA Mabunda gave up a modelling career for music. Her new single from her upcoming album is called My Dreams. The 31year-old from Tshwane is expected to release her debut album, Pages Of My Diary, soon. “I have always been a singer. I began singing in the Sunday school church choir,” she said. “I’m happy that I get to do what I love. Releasing an album is a dream come true.” Born in Ngobe Village, Limpopo, Wilma was a professional model with more than five years of experience. “Quitting modelling was an easy decision because my first love was always music.” Wilma released her first single, called Jozi, in 2014. “The song didn’t fare well because of bad marketing. Rookie singers are often overlooked by promoters and they don’t get booked for gigs. This is the reason they sink in this tough industry. I urge the Department of Arts and Culture to help up-and-coming musicians.” The Afro-soul singer writes her own music.

The song has received lots of good reviews. Lore described the single as a party anthem about a group of guys who refuse to let fear hold them back. The musicians, who are based in Joburg, said they received massive support while they were still in Rustenburg. “People would always have a great time when we performed for them at a show. “Their energy used to fuel our performances and that inspired us to take our craft seriously,” said Lore. Lore & Ofentic use their music to represent their home town, and this song is no different.

“The single encourages people not to forget where they come.” Lore said they are slaving away in the studio to complete the album. “We have recorded 13 tracks, but haven’t decided how many songs will be included. “The album will feature the likes of Red Button, and we are working with producers such as Black Jar Moscow and Jays on Decks.” “We worked with these producers because they come from the same province as us and they are trying to become successful.” Lore said they have finished shooting their music video, which will be released next month.

ARE YOU RAISING A SPOILT KID? As parents, we constantly want to give our kids the best of everything. At times we give them material things as a means of making up for things we think we did not have as kids. It’s easy to bend to your kids’ desires to avoid tantrums and public drama, but focusing too much on their happiness can spoil them. This makes them grow up thinking they deserve things and not appreciating other people’s needs and feelings. Signs that your kid is spoilt: ) Giving in to their every request ) Delivering empty threats ) Being inconsistent with rules and consequences

) Shielding kids from disappointment ) Giving them too many material goods and bribing them to take responsibility ) Not encouraging gratitude ) Kid interrupts conversations ) Kid has too much say in family life Giving in to their demands is the easy way out and robs them of: ) Understanding their limits ) A healthy social life ) Delayed gratification ) Empathy and learning how to cope or solve their own problems A spoilt kid doesn’t develop into an emo tionally healthy and responsible adult in later life. #iMatter 083 323 1023

Dear Mizzb I am a young, married mum whose child loves to throw tantrums in public. I always give in and buy her what she wants to put an end to the drama. Lately I have noticed she is doing the same thing at school and church. I do my best to ensure my child has everything her peers do, but my fiveyear-old doesn’t seem to be satisfied. She just wants more. ) Enabler

they can act up. Giving a child everything she wants destroys the sense of pride that comes from working hard to receive a toy or gift. How you react to the tantrums is encouraging your child to continue her behaviour. Have you ever tried ignoring your child’s tantrums? Loving your children does not mean you have to allow them to have their way all the time. Teaching children they cannot have everything they want shapes them into adults who achieve their goals through hard work, instead of asking for handouts.

My child is a drama queen!

By THEMBA NKOMO THE Mine Boy uses his music to educate people! The qualified mining engineer, whose real name is Lesedi Lekarapa (29), said he’s always been passionate about music. That’s why he’s released an album called Mining Drums. Speaking to SunBuzz, he said: “My project encourages the youth to join the mining sector. There are many career paths they can follow in the field. But more important, my music is about inspiring safety underground.”

He has featured artists such as DJ Tira, the Infinite Boys and DJ Zai Maya. He said the album is a combination of catchy sounds which can be heard underground as miners work tirelessly to dig for gold. One of his singles, Mankalanyane, which features Trademark, describes these scenes perfectly. “Mankalanyane tdescribes the five safety steps in mining.” He said Mankalanyane is an underground train. The house music artist said

the song’s inspired by Hugh Masekela’s Stimela. “The album uses Fanakalo. “This simplified language was used to unite miners from various parts of Africa because it includes many languages.” Lesedi told SunBuzz he regularly hosts programmes around Westonaria, Mogale City, which promote safety in the mining sector. “For the last mining safety tours, I invited Heavy K and Infinite Boys to entertain the crowd. Uzalo’s Londeka Mlaba was the MC.”

MONEY Women are now SINGLE PARENT BUDGET business ready! SPENDING IT, SAVING IT, MAKING IT WORK FOR YOU

Prioritise and stick to the plan By KOPANO MONAHENG WHETHER you’re a single mother or father, raising children alone is always difficult. But Alfred Ramosedi, group executive for sales and marketing at African Bank, says single parents can manage if they are disciplined with budgets. “Know what you can afford, work out the priorities and stick to the plan.” He said parents should speak to a financial consultant if they needed advice on how to make effective budgets. He also touched on various issues which single parents should be aware of: Create budgets with your kids Talk to your children about the household budget and help them understand what money is available for what’s needed and wanted. Don’t overcompensate Parents fall prey to guilt by buying expensive gifts and spending more than they should on their kids. Your heart will be your undoing. How to make extra money There are number of ways to earn extra cash if you are savvy and dedicated. Every bit helps. Pay for what’s needed first Make sure the necessities in your budget

are labelled. They should include expenses such as bond repayments or rent, food, school fees, medical aid and uniforms. Make sure you save or pay off debt Don’t keep putting it off as debt will accumulate as interest rates increase. The same applies to savings. Even a small amount invested in the correct savings product could yield good returns in a few years. Consider applying for a fees exemption from government There is a possibility of getting a full or partial exemption from annual school fees. Take the time to find out how the process works and it could pay off. Downgrade if you need to Have a look at the type of car you drive, where you live and where you shop. Decide whether it makes sense to adjust your lifestyle in order to have more disposable income at the end of the month. It is also a good opportunity to sell what you don’t need and use the additional cash to invest or save. Don’t take on anymore unneeded debt Remember that you pay interest on personal loans and retail accounts. In the end, you are paying far more than if you had bought the item with cash. If there is something you want, save for it.

Being a single parent is tough but you can succeed with careful planning.

By THABO MONAMA MORE than 160 out-of-school, unemployed or self-employed young women, between 18 and 35 years, are ready to be entrepreneurs. After their graduation from the Youth Enterprise Development Programme, organised by Junior Achievement South Africa, a Mastercard-funded initiative, the women are empowered to start and develop business ventures of their own. The 20-week programme taught the women business theory, market research, financial and business management, sales and marketing, computer literacy, business funding as well as management and other practical skills. “Most entrepreneurs have ambition, determination and original ideas but many lack the expertise needed to make a successful business,” said Nelly Mofokeng, managing director of Junior Achievement. According to 2017 Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, women account for only 19,1% of Mzansi business owners, and have a low rate of entrepreneurial activity. “South Africa’s women are its biggest assets yet their full potential is not being respected,” said Mark Elliott, division president, Mastercard Southern Africa. Lydia Makgoba (29) attended the programme in Diepsloot. She said she wanted to start a baby clothing manufacturing business and sell her brand locally and internationally. “The programme provided me with skills such as financial literacy to help me succeed.”

Refilwe, who is from a family of pastors, told the People’s Paper her journey started in church. “My grandparents are the head pastors of our church, so whenever they saw a gap they would put a member of our family on the pulpit, and it was non-negotiable. “Even in Sunday school, when a speaker was needed, I was always the chosen one.” She said when she was in high school the expectations that came with being the granddaughter of pastors resulted in her living a rebellious life. “I wanted to know who I was outside of my family.” She was then sent to boarding school. “My experiences there pushed me closer to my calling. It was there that I decided to go into ministry.” Refilwe said men pastors look down on her because she’s a woman. “I’ve been criticized for being in ministry because of my background.” But Refilwe said her focus is on serving God. Tata’s tournament puts smiles on kids’ faces By LEHLOHONOLO MBATHA THE organisers of the 67 Matches for Madiba soccer tournament on Sunday matched the success of last year’s event. The tournament was held at Discovery Soccer Park, Wanderers, Joburg, as part of the 67 Minutes for Madiba celebrations. The tournament saw 67 five-a-side soccer matches being played on behalf of the Smile Foundation. The NGO was established at the request of former president Nelson Mandela and all funds raised by the tournament were donated to provide corrective surgery for children with facial problems. Corporate and celebrity teams took part in the tournament. One of the teams included foundation chairman Marc Lubner and board members Loyiso Bala, Sam Cowen and Fiona Nay. Soccer park CEO Ryan Kalk said: “This year’s funds will once again be used to deal with the backlog of reconstructive paediatric cases in the province.” Smile Foundation executive director Hedley Lewis thanked the event’s sponsors, the soccer park and Octagon Chartered Accountants.

Sixty-seven soccer teams took part in the 67 Matches for Madiba tournament to raise funds for kids needing corrective surgery. Waldek Wasowicz, a partner at the accounting firm, said they were very happy to be involved in the initiative again. “What better way to honour Madiba’s legacy than through an event like this?” he asked.

Each match in the tournament lasted 15 minutes. The two teams that reached the final played for R10 000 in prize money and R10 000 to be awarded to the Smile Foundation in the winning team’s name. The cost to participate was R2 500 a team.

“A woman who feels threatened by her partner should get out of the abusive relationship, because one day he might kill her.” Simon said he wanted to make a difference in society, as people are protesting for services. “As the Long Walk To Good Health, we are chanting for a good cause.” Hafiz Shaike, the acting mayor of Polokwane, said the municipality wished the team a safe journey. “We know that they are also doing this for Madiba, since it his birth month.

“We support their effort because our women and kids don’t need to feel threatened.” Makgabo Senoamadi from Folang Trust is one of the sponsors. “Our organisation runs programmes such as HIV/Aids and health awareness, as well as sports development. That’s why we sponsored Simon and his team on their long walk,” said Makgabo. “We are behind them every step of the way because they are putting the safety of women first.”

20 THE TRUTH ABOUT BABA BULANI My name is Nonhle Ndlovu I live in Ermelo in Mpumalanga. My number is 0810697272 I have three children and when my husband lost his job we didn't know what do to. We had no food to feed the children so we ended up going to the loan sharks for help. But the big problem is that when you don't pay in time they increase again together with the 10% interest. So we were not able to pay our debt because with the interest we owned him. He came to our house and beat up my husband and I, and took some of our furniture and also had our I.D books. Then I read a testimony from Sipho Mondo telling me about BABA BULANI who helped him with money in the Bank account. He sent the SHORT BOYS to put money in his BANK ACCOUNT but I didn't believe that because people would write or do anything for money but when I call him he said he can send THE POWEFUL RATS to put money in my house. Because I wanted more money than, I was owing I asked for He then took 10% of the amount I asked from him. I was able to pay our debts and the other money helped us to build a super market. And my husband got a tender a finding skim at a school and we didn't have to go and borrow it because we had our own money imagine a tender on top of the money we already had. And now I send BABA BULANI money just to thank him for helping us. BABA BULANI can also help your to boost your business or wining lotto, power ball and cession If you have problems I advise you to call him he will help you. SUNSTUFF STARS

Aries (Mar 20 - Apr 19) Work: Either you don’t have the time or you don’t have the motivation to get all your tasks completed. Self: If you continue with this procrastination you’ll end up with a disaster zone of gigantic proportions. Mind: Force yourself to compile a list of priorities and wade through each duty one by one.

Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22) Social: An inconsiderate friend is taking up too much of your energy and stealing time from your family. Friends: Somebody that cares for you will understand when you explain that you need your own time too. Self: It is absolutely in order that you redraw the boundaries of ‘your’ time versus other people’s time.

Taurus (Apr 20 - May 20) Mind: It is unnecessary to explain your thoughts; you have a right to privacy as does everyone else. Self: It’s up to you what you want to mention and what you want to keep quiet. Less is best for now. Life: Simple ideas are often the best solutions to the most complicated problems.

Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Life: This is no time to get stuck in your ways. You’ll need to learn to move with the changing times. Career: There are many avenues to consider. So many that you are irritated by the thought of the choices. Mind: Don’t bring up controversial subjects with friends if you want to stay in their good books.

Gemini (May 21 - Jun 20) Money & Love: The only word to describe what’s going on is “confusion”. Nobody is getting what they want. Self: There is no compromise if only one person is giving and the other is taking. Life: Don’t be hasty in responding during a conflict situation. You’ll get into trouble if you jump to conclusions.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21) Work: Others may seem unreasonable to you when decisions need to be made. Don’t get sucked into their drama. Life: There’s an opportunity for you to go on a trip. It may be to visit a family member or for work. Self: Sometimes you have to walk away from one good thing to find a better one.

Cancer (Jun 21 - Jul 22) Money & Love: Your lover wants to spend on home maintenance and you feel that you deserve a holiday. Money: Spare cash that is available should be saved until you and your mate agree on what is to be done. Self: Don’t be tempted to make a hasty decision. Regret is an awful thing to live with after the fact.

Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 20) Love: Yesterday’s stress between your partner and the family has not dissolved. Family: Don’t allow the family strain to create distance between you and your lover; you must communicate. Self: Communication means that you don’t only listen but you also offer your thoughts on the matter.

Leo (Jul 23 - Aug 22) Love: You’re feeling more romantic this week and it shows by the affection you show your lover. Life: Make sure you read the fine print of contracts as you may miss some important information. Work: You’ve produced the goods and it may be a good time to speak to the boss about a raise or promotion.

Aquarius (Jan 21 - Feb 18) Life: For a while nothing goes as planned; you can cope with that but others can’t. Self: Because you stay calm under pressure, you’ll have to take on the role of leadership for now. Mind: You don’t have to give any orders. The best way to direct the crowd is by example.

Virgo (Aug 23 - Sep 22) Self: It is necessary to re-establish your values and decide what really matters to you most. Mind: Do you want a perfect job, perfect house, perfect family, perfect love or perfect life? Life: Perhaps your standards are too high? Perfection is not as satisfying as it seems from a distance.

Pisces (Feb 19 - Mar 19) Self: You don’t feel as if you’re good enough for the rest of the world and that is a huge problem. Mind: What makes you believe you’re inferior to anybody else? You have potential; lots of it! Life: Each person has a talent; it is your duty to make sure you find yours as soon as possible.

GRAY’S FILLY TO UPSTAGE THE BOYS By SUN RACING EDITOR ALTHOUGH taking on male opposition, St John Gray-trained filly Shivering Sea will be tough to beat at the Vaal today when teaming up with Gunter Wrogemann in race 4 and Leg 1 of the Jackpot, a MR 82 Handicap over 1 200m. This speedy daughter of Captain Al had been holding form well at the Vaal before being unplaced there in her penultimate outing. However, there was much to like about the way she bounced back to top form next time when carrying 60kg – leading from the start and scoring by an increasing 3,7 lengths in a MR 76 Handicap over today’s course and distance. The filly could complete the double as she will carry 0,5kg less this time in field of only six runners. The filly’s main rivals are Golden Man and Sporting Monarch.

with Zackey up at Turffontein. The fiveyear-old has won at the Vaal and her last run at the course was three runs back when she carried 61kg with Zackey up and was a gutsy 0,5-length third. However, the frontrunner will have to watch out for Paul Peter-trained Analyse That (Jarryd Penny) who surprised on debut last time when scoring decisively in a workriders’ contest over today’s course and distance. Also in with claims are Memphis Belle, Lady On Fire, Burgundy Rose, Pipkin and Claremorris. Dalley, with Anthony Delpech up, looks a possible banker in the final leg over 2 400m. Delpech has a fine association with the filly in four starts, winning once and placed three times. They justified favouritism last time when scoring by three lengths over this course and distance.

Gray’s stable could also come to light with four-year-old filly Last Girl Standing (S’manga Khumalo) who also takes on male opposition in Leg 2 of the Jackpot, a 1 200m MR 69 Handicap. The one-time winner deserves a change of luck as she has been placed in all but one of her last nine starts – the two most recent of which saw her finish a runnerup over 1 200m and 1 400m at the Vaal. The four-year-old has a wide draw but that is not a concern as she usually runs on strongly from off the pace. She has just 53kg to shoulder. Others to be considered in this tricky race are Tiger’s Legacy, Exclusively Trendy and I’m A Raptor. Leg 3, a MR 68 Handicap (F&M) over 1 000m, is not any easier but the one who could have the edge is top-weight Cataluga (Craig Zackey) from Scott

I WOULD like to wish Cape Town City and reigning Midfielder of the Season, Aubrey Ngoma, a speedy recovery after his knee operation. I hope the knee heals soon so that he can return to the field next season. Mogajane Nthite, Rabokala

Wayne gets the job done! THEY say goalkeepers mature with time. I’m surprised that Mamelodi Sundowns let go of Wayne Sandilands. He always gets the job done when given the opportunity. I thought Kennedy Mweene was the one who would be released. It’s rare for him to keep a clean sheet. My concern is that the goalkeeping department is dominated by foreign players. We as a country have a mandate to produce Bafana Bafana keepers. Thela Ngobeni might even be loaned out again. JM Aphane, Vaalbank

Mzansi clubs in African cup final? PSL chairman Irvin Khoza’s dream of a final between South African teams in Caf competitions is not far from being realised. With the way things are going, we could be treated to a fivestar final in the Caf Super Cup – should Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United conquer their respective competitions. Musa Zikode

THAMI: I’M MY OWN SANGWENI

By CHARLES BALOYI NEW Orlando Pirates midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni does not plan on living in the shadow of his elder brother Siyabonga forever. Wherever he goes, Thamsanqa always gets compared to his brother, who had a successful career and won lots of trophies at Pirates. Siyabonga has since hanged up his boots after a stellar career with the Soweto giants. The new Bucs signing says he wants to write his own chapter. Sangweni joins Bucs at a time when the club needs new heroes after a terrible season that saw the team fail to end in the top eight in the league for the first time. In addition to the endless comparisons with his brother, Thamsanqa is also regarded as a replacement for Andile Jali, who left the club in 2014 to join KV Oostende in Belgium. Some fans believe an adequate replacement for the Bafana Bafana star has never truly been found. In the 28-year-old Thamsanqa, however, the club seems to have

Photo by Sydney Mahlangu /Backpagepix found that missing piece of the puzzle in midfield. But Sangweni does not want to be compared to Jali either. Said the new signing at the club’s 2017-18 PSL season jersey launch in Joburg yesterday: “It means a lot to wear this jersey

as a player. Growing up you want to play for Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs, and now I find myself here. I plan to do my best to help them win cups. But I don’t want to be compared to my brother. “I’m here to make my mark, not to be like him.”

Bucs legends want to help ailing club

By CHARLES BALOYI ORLANDO Pirates legends are fuming! Jerry “Legs of Thunder” Sikhosana leads a group of Bucs legends who have called for greater involvement in the technical matters of the team ahead of the 2017-18 PSL season. Speaking at the Buccaneers’ new jersey launch in Joburg yesterday, Sikhosana reminded Bucs players of the team that won the African star back in 1995. Pirates revealed a throw-back, old-fashioned design similar to the one the club’s players used to wear back in the day. Sikhosana said he was hoping that the old design would inspire the players to reclaim the glory days. He urged chairman Irvin Khoza to get more involved in the day-to-day running of the club and to hold regular talks with players and coaches to remind them what it means to play for the badge. Said Sikhosana: “We are angry and don’t enjoy our status as legends when the team is bad. I hope this jersey will inspire them to reclaim the glory days. “We used to fight for the badge and we fought for this club. What is lacking in these boys is a fighting spirit, along with the will to work as a team.” Sikhosana said he would like it if the club invited them to training sessions to speak to the players. He said: “I still believe the chairman can do more. “I wonder if the chairman still holds regular talks with the players? His voice is powerful – after you hear him speak angrily you never want to hear him angry again! “He must talk to them as much as he did to us back in 1995.”

Fuzile takes aim at Maemu! By MALIBONGWE BHIDO AFTER a convincing victory over a Gauteng opponent in his last bout the reigning South African featherweight champion Azinga “Golden Boy” Fuzile aims to send another adversary from the Place of Gold packing. The unbeaten prospect from Duncan Village in East London will put his South African featherweight crown on the line against Soweto challenger Rofhiwa “War Child” Maemu at Orient Theatre on 30 July. In his last contest, Fuzile outpointed Gauteng based Sydney “Skeleton” Maluleka in a winner-takes-all battle in May. The talented fighter put his SA crown on the line while Maluleka’s International Boxing Federation regional belt was on offer. Fuzile’s mentor, Mzamo “Chief” Njekanye, says the challenger’s credibility will be put to a stringent test in this contest. “We respect him as a fighter but we will treat him as a challenger. He is coming down here with nothing and he will go back home empty-handed. The only thing he will get is a test of character,” said Njekanye.

“We don’t know much about Maemu except that he is an African Boxing Union featherweight champion and a credible opponent. We won’t underestimate him, we know he will bring his A-game and we will be at our best. He must be prepared to work hard because there will be no favours.” Maemu’s trainer, Alan Toweel, says they go into the fight as underdogs but are ready to rise to the occasion. “We been training hard, preparing for this fight and I’m anticipating a good showdown. We are ready for the contest,” he said. “We are going there to prove ourselves. We are not going to East London just to honour the feature but to take the title. If we were not sure of that, we wouldn’t have taken the fight. “My boy has been waiting for this opportunity to fight for the national title for the past two years,” he added. Toweel and Njekanye have been in opposite corners before. The 2016 Trainer of the Year from the Eastern Cape emerged on top from the first one when Fuzile beat boxerturned-promoter Tumelo Padi two years ago.

Top names shortlisted for famous gsport awards By SUNSPORT REPORTER TWO-TIME gsport Athlete of the Year Caster Semenya is in the mix again this year, competing with fellow Rio Olympic medallist Sunette Viljoen and one of the world’s best netballers, Karla Mostert, for the 2017 gsport Athlete of the Year award. A panel of judges has considered and scored all nominees to compile a merit-based list of three finalists per awards category, and now it is over to the public who can cast their votes at www.gsport.co.za until 7 August, to decide 2017’s overall winners. The winners will be announced in Joburg on 26 August. Semenya leads a formidable list of 51 finalists for the 12th edition of SA’s longest running national women’s sports awards. The Athlete with Disability category will be contested by SA’s No 1 wheelchair tennis star, Kgothatso Montjane, 5 000m T11 world record holder Louzanne Coetzee and the double Rio Para-

lympic silver medallist Ilse Hayes. SA’s top ranked junior golfer Kajal Mistry is a double finalist. She is up against Proteas opening batter Laura Wolvaardt and last year’s double winner Nokwanda Hlongwane for School Sports Star of the Year – and also up for honours in the Emerging Athlete of the Year category against Asive Gilifile and Heidi Dalton. The Coach of the Year category will see three strong candidates battle it out, with leading disability sports coach, Dr Suzanne Ferreira, Proteas coach Hilton Moreeng and TUT Soshanguve coach Maude Khumalo shortlisted. Daily Sun sports writer and double former winner, Busisiwe Mokwena, leads the field in the Print category, up against Herald sports writer Vuyokazi Nkanjeni, and Kickoff Magazine senior designer, Monique Petersen.

By MISHECK MAKORA GRIQUAS coach Peter Engeldow rued the chances his team failed to utilise in the first half against Western Province in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge final at Florida Park in Parow, Western Cape, on Sunday. Province beat Griquas 28-19 to walk away with a handy R500 000 in prize money from this inaugural tournament. Province were leading 28-0 in the second half but the Griquas managed to score two tries and seemed well on the road to recovery. Had the Griquas had an extra 10 minutes, chances are they could have scored another try, converting it and even earning a penalty for victory. Said Engeldow: “I think we made silly mistakes in the first half. We couldn’t get into their half, lost opportunities and did not make good decisions. “We will forget about this game and focus on the future. The coach was proud, however, of the second half where they pressured their opponents into a corner and stopped them from scoring more tries. He added: “I think the guys showed character and resilience but fell short at the end of the day. Griquas captain Adriaan Coertzen told SunSport that they approached the second half with confidence and an eagerness to bounce back He said: “We didn’t have a good first half and although we tried to push in the second half, the deficit of 28 points was just too big. “We tried to keep the ball in hand and

Still, we are not making any excuses for the final outcome. Chauke and head coach Dorette Badenhorst only had five days to prepare the team before departing for Botswana. The Limpopo Baobabs coach reckons had they had a chance to play against some of the strongest teams in the world beforehand, they would have been better prepared for the tournament. She said they would need to be more steadfast in their game. “We lack discipline when it comes to sticking to our game plan. We need to become clinical in our attack and remain disciplined in our defence as well. We have identified areas of defence and styles of attack to improve our game, she added. Chauke said the experience as a young coach had opened her eyes to the potential in South African netball. She said: “I am happy to have played a role in the calibre of the players we have produced. I know they will go and do well for their respective teams. The tournament was a great opportunity to learn.

By BUSISIWE MOKWENA BABY Proteas assistant coach Dumisani Chauke says the players have learned from their experience at the recent Netball World Youth Cup, although the outcome was not what they had hoped for. South Africa dropped down to sixth position from the fifth place achieved at the last World Cup after they lost to Jamaica in their last match of the competition in Gaborone, Botswana, on Sunday. New Zealand won the tournament and defended their title after beating arch-rivals Australia in the finals. Chauke admits the team struggled to stick to their game plan. The Under-21s went down to the Silver Ferns and Australia’s Diamonds in addition to their loss to Jamaica – all among the top four in the world. Said Chauke: “It was not the plan to go down in the rankings, we were hoping to do better than last time. But we lost to the three strongest teams in the world – we never even got a chance to play the likes of England and Fiji, or we might have done better.

FUTURE NOT SO BRIGHT!

Brighton Mhlongo’s agent, Mike Makaab, has denied reports that his player has joined Chippa United.

Conflicting reports on Mhlongo’s next destination, as Jali signs new deal

By MATHEWS MPETE A BIG mystery surrounds the future of Brighton Mhlongo after conflicting reports emerged yesterday regarding the player’s destination for the 2017-18 PSL season. Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi is reported to have prematurely announced that the Chilli Boys had signed Mhlongo, which the player’s business manager Mike Makaab has refuted. Makaab told SunSport yesterday that to his knowledge nothing had changed and Mhlongo was still an Orlando Pirates player. “I would like to state catAndile Jali has egorically that Brighton, as of last renewed his night (Sunday 16 July), had not contract with signed any contract with any club,” Belgian team KV Makaab declared, putting out the Oostende. fire started by Mpengesi. Photos by “No one has engaged me or Themba Makofane Brighton regarding contracts. It is and Getty Images just unbelievable that this has spread so fast. I doubt Brighton would do something like that – sign a contract without letting me know. And how can I believe there is any deal if the player has not been engaged?” This is not the first time Mpengesi has jumped the gun on signings, after he declared that Puleng Tlolane had joined them, only for the player to deny the news via SunSport.

There was also the Menzi Masuku rumour – which ultimately proved true, with the player making a smooth move to the Eastern Cape. But Makaab is not ruling out the possibility of Mhlongo moving: “It became obvious when Pirates signed Wayne Sandilands that he would take Brighton’s place. That means Brighton will no longer be their No 1. And a club is entitled to make its own decisions. In this case Pirates made the decision. It is their job to do so. “My relationship with Orlando Pirates is very strong. My relationship with Chippa United is very strong. In fact, Pro-Sport has very strong relationships with all the PSL chairmen and their clubs. These relationships are very important to me.” Although certain clubs tended to ignore agents, Makaab said, “the deal has to involve the player”. He emphasised: “And in this case, the player (Brighton) has not been engaged by any club. “Pro-Sport has been representing players for over two decades now and we know how to conclude deals.” SunSport understands that Mhlongo has always been on Chippa’s wanted list and Mpengesi is talking to Pirates. Pirates, who launched their 2017-18 jersey yesterday, were unable to comment on the matter. ) Meanwhile, Makaab confirmed that 24-year-old Thembela Sikhakhane has joined AmaZulu, while Mthokozisi Dube is back with Pirates after a loan spell at Bloemfontein Celtic. “Most of our players are settled with their respective clubs, and nothing makes us happier than seeing our players feel at home,” Makaab said. ) Andile Jali has signed a new contract with Belgian Pro League’s KV Oostende, according to Makaab. This is contrary to reports that the 27-year-old midfielder from Matatiele was feeling unsettled in Belgium. Some PSL teams, including Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, were very interested in obtaining his services. ) ALSO SEE INSIDE.

Modise aims to tame Zebras!

By BILLY COOPER BAFANA Bafana won’t sit back and relax when they host Botswana in the second round of their African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier at Moruleng Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday (3pm). Budding Mamelodi Sundowns star Malebogo Modise, who made his Bafana debut in the second half of the first leg which Bafana won 2-0 in Francistown, is itching for another crack at the Zebras after having had to leave the field injured barely six minutes into his debut. Said the South African Under-20 defender: “We must put more pressure on Botswana and go for the win. That will see us safe so we reach the next round. We won’t be taking it easy.” It’s been a great year for the 20-yearold, who played in all three matches at the Fifa Youth World Cup in South

Korea for Amajita earlier this year and now got his first senior international cap in last weekend’s victory win over the Zebras. Said an excited Modise: “I feel blessed. It proves hard work pays off. I was sad when I had to leave the field last Saturday. But that’s football. “I believe I have a 90% chance of being fit for Saturday. I’m working hard to get fighting fit so that I’ll be able to play in the second leg.” He said the key was to carry out to head coach Stuart Baxter’ instructions: “We played according to coach Stuart’s game plan and we must do the same again on Saturday.” His Amajita teammate Ricardo Lourenco, who plies his trade for Orlando Pirates, said: “This game is not done and dusted. Having a 2-0 lead is a bit tricky. We have to apply ourselves again, and not let them score and put

pressure on us. We must listen to the coach and, like he said, we must be more clinical on transition, calm and confident, and finish the job in Rustenburg.” Lourenco, who helped Amajita win the Commonwealth of Independent States Cup in Russia last year, said he could not believe it when he got called up to Bafana: “If somebody told me two years ago I would be in the Bafana squad, I would not have believed it!” On the possibility of getting his Bafana debut, the midfielder said: “It’s every player’s dream to play for his country and it would mean the world to me.”
