Welcome to the Fall / Winter 2014 collection. A collection of headwear and accessories inspired by the world around us, from the city streets to the tallest mountain peaks and everywhere in between. Coal is the product of our collective creative outlets. No matter what you do or where you do it, Coal will be there keeping you covered, with uncompromising quality and style. In this season’s offering you will see a variety of colors, more prints and patterns, and more fine and unique materials.
History
Mission
In 2002 a group of friends got together to start a company that reflected their shared vision: headwear should be more than an accessory. At the time, hats, knit beanies, and the like were little more than something companies slapped their logo on. We saw an opportunity to provide the market with accessories that took fit, fashion, and function equally seriously, and looked at headwear as an extension of you, your identity and your lifestyle. Design was—and still is—the main factor of every style. Not only from the color, yarn / material type, or subtle branding, but to the fit and look of every style when worn. We strive to create the best possible headwear out there. It’s all about design, uncompromising attention to detail, and superior components.
Coal was founded on the belief that headwear is more than an accessory. It’s part of you, your identity, and your lifestyle. We build this idea into each of our designs by using quality materials and exacting detail, and crafting styles that are as unique as you are.

The McNeil SE A collaboration between Brooklyn-based designer Loren Cronk and Seattle-based Coal Headwear. Loren is a denim craftsman, designing for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Levi Strauss & Co and Marc Jacobs, while finding his niche making jeans by hand the old-fashion way at his namesake boutique in Brooklyn, NY. We teamed up with Loren to tap into his extensive knowledge of all things denim. Thus was born the McNeil SE, a modern fisherman’s cap fashioned out of denim and made by hand in the USA.
The McNeil SE The McNeil SE is based on our version of the classic Greek fisherman, The McNeil. We teamed up with Loren to create a modern version, combining our much-loved silhouette with Loren’s painstaking attention to detail. Made of shirting weight denim, contrast black brim and braided cording at front. Inspired by the custom jeans Loren makes in his Brooklyn studio, this cap is made in the USA. Another artful collaboration, this time with Hong Kong based artist EPH. Ephraim has travelled 1/3 of the world thrice (actually way less than that). He’s not a total downer. In fact, most of the time he is pleasant, albeit awkward, company. Most of his work is very personal because he’s very self-absorbed. In Philosophy 101 he learned that people called this existentialism. Born in Hong Kong, raised on smoked salmon, maple syrup and hockey in Vancouver, Canada, he has recently decided to quit smoking. Which coincidentally feels like the name of this hat. Known for his work as an independent artist and as design director for Capita Snowboarding, we are beyond excited to be working together on a silhouette and custom artwork for Fall 14.

The wool they use comes from Texas and goes through a rigorous process where the raw wool is first formed into loose cone shaped bodies, from there the cones are treated with pressure and hot water repeatedly. The combination of the pressure and heat begins to felt the wool fibers. The felt becomes tighter and denser as the process continues. Once the bodies are ready for use they are blocked by hand, the brims trimmed and shaped, and the final trims, lining and labeling applied.
Merino is an amazing yarn with the ability to be both refined in look and tough in performance. Merino wool is not only finer and softer than other wool, it also has technical properties akin to what most people look for in synthetic performance fibers, such as wicking and insulation.

Our Made in the USA alpaca/Merino yarn is a wonderful blending of two great fibers. Alpaca is a luxurious and silky fiber that is soft while still maintaining durability. The natural fiber is similar to that of sheep’s wool, but warmer and without the prickly feel. Because the fleece does not contain lanolin it is hypoallergenic. Merino wool—with its great technical properties— is a perfect accompaniment to alpaca. With the two combined you get a hat that is well insulated, soft and moisture wicking.

Lambswool Lambswool is different from other wool in that wool fibers are shorter, making them softer. Lambswool characteristically is softer and more slippery in-hand, compared to other wool, making it a great fiber for beanies.
Our lambswool/Angora blend allows the silky Angora fiber to be used in a variety of applications. Angora on its own is incredibly soft, even softer than cashmere but not as sturdy, making it difficult to spin into yarn. Blending it with lambswool—plus a touch of nylon— allows this fiber to be made into beanies, scarves and gloves with years of wearability.
