American Idiot–Green Day–Notes
Activity type: gap fill, opposites, word formation.
Time: 20 mins.
1) Write the following words on the board: lead (verb) – nobody – nothing – old - yesterday 2) Students write the opposites alone or in pairs. Key: follow – everybody – everything – new - tomorrow 3) Play the song. Students listen for the new words, numbering them in the order they appear. Key: 1. new – 2. everything – 3. tomorrow – 4. follow – 5. everybody 4) Feedback. Make sure they have the correct opposites at this stage. 5) Give each student a copy of the worksheet. Ask them to change the words on the right to fill in the gaps (with unbroken lines). They should also try to insert the words as listed above, in the correct gaps (with broken lines). 6) Play the song again. Students complete the text. 7) Allow them to check their answers with other students, and then play the song again. 8) Correct, and sing together.
Follow up: The singer is very angry with the political situation in his country. How do you feel about the situation in your own country?
