This contribution intends to be an updated version to my unit on the Irish Question,

which I have presented to my school leavers, this year, while dealing with the main issues of the beginning of the 20th century. On the occasion of the centenary of the Irish Independence I thought it would be appropriate to update the contents with a few new facts and data, references to significant works of art, and photos of recent material on display in Dublin for the commemorative celebration. For a better understanding of the Rising I recommend the book :

FOLLOW UP: The unit can be complemented by: -

The introduction to Anne-Marie’s Ryan book, which my school leavers and I have translated with the author’s permission. (coming soon…)

-

A research on the women of the Rising who played an active role serving as doctors, nurses, cooks, drivers and couriers and also taking up arms and fighting. To be continued…

A copy of the 1916 proclamation of the Irish Republic on display at Dublin Castle between the Irish and the EU flag
