BCM CREATIVE DIRECTOR Douglas Bassett Douglas Bassett Backstage Studio After 20 years photographing backstage fashion shows, I take great pleasure in presenting The Backstage Collections Magazine for Men—the world`s first such publication. It’s about the designers who created the fashions, and the top models that brought the fashions to life. Milano has always been the leader in men’s trends, from classic to sportive, and to rock-star. Paris has followed, adding avant-garde tailoring, and alternative shape and form. Together, both are the driving force behind men’s fashions that the rest of the world follows. The fashion show has changed since the 90s—the era of the Supermodels—and it was the camera that made the difference. Since we didn’t have auto-focus, the models had to stop at the end of the runway to pose, in order to allow us to focus our shots. They took advantage of this brief pause to create that special look that defined the clothes. This is the element—pose and interpretation—the projection of an attitude—that is missing in today’s shows. While backstage is still hectic, it has its slower moments with the models standing in line and awaiting their cue for their entrance. This is the moment when the collection stands before me, when the designer’s vision is revealed. Suddenly visible is the story of the brand: the designer’s variations of color, printed designs, and shape. Dramatically revealed are the micro variations of each grouping of models. Placing small model groups together creates the best backstage photographs, where the designer’s concept is discovered, and the models self-importantly fill the camera’s frame with their wondrous costumes. This is great backstage material, but I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted to see the models as the young men they are—dynamic and full of life. I wanted them to interact with my camera, projecting the brand`s concept, showing why they are here. I was seeking the right glance, but with an attitude that would make a difference, and bring the outfit to life! I wanted the model`s spirit to be shown in the image. This collection of photographs has become the representation of the spirit of the great young men who have stood in front of my camera. This first Backstage Collections Magazine for Men was a daunting task, choosing from among 20,000 images from 50 fashion shows. The first cut left me with as many as 250 photos for a large show. An Armani show could leave me with 80 outfits to choose from. The final cut was based on the model’s exuberance, vigor, vitality, and high spirits. This became the essence for the Backstage Collections.
