FSLC’s annual Gala began in 1972 and honored Charlie Chaplin who returned to the USA from exile to accept the commendation. Recent honorees have included Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Michael Douglas, Sidney Poitier, Catherine Deneuve, Barbra Streisand, and last year’s recipient, Robert Redford. Freeman has starred in 31 movies starting at the ripe age of 50 years old. It was director Jerry Schatzberg, who gave Freeman his breakthrough movie role in Street Smart and has stolen our hearts since then.

On hand to honor Freeman were a few of his fellow co-stars such as

Robert De Niro, Helen Mirren and Danny Glover. Also in attendance was Lori McCreary (President of the Producers Guild of America), Lesli Klainberg (FSLC Executive Director), Eugene Hernandez (FSLC Deputy Director), Kent Jones (Director of the New York Film Festival), Dennis Lim (FSLC Director of Programming).
