MiMo stands for "Miami Modern," which is a distinctive architectural style that emergedinthe1950sand1960s.
Not to be confused with Art Deco, which was an architectural and design style that developed primarily in the 1920s and 1930s It emerged after World War I and lasteduntilWorldWarII.
The Mimo (Miami Modern)originated after World War II and during the postwarboom
Mimo emerged as a response to the Art Deco style and sought to reflect the beach lifestyle and tropical culture of Miami. It was characterized by horizontal lines, curved shapes, bright colors and a focus on the relationship with the tropical environment It used elements such as brise-soleil (shade sheets), latticework, and perforated bricks to control sunlight and promote ventilation inMiami'shotclimate
Here are some notable MiMo buildings in Miami's Biscayne Boulevard MiMo Historic District:
Vagabond Hotel: This one in particular reminds us of the Googie style of Califirnia. Located at 7301 Biscayne Boulevard, the Vagabond Hotel is an iconic MiMo building that has been restored and reopened in recent years. Showcasing the characteristic sleek lines and vibrant colors of the MiMo style. It looks a bit like the Jetsons era !
