(NC) - Do your children know exactly what to do if a fire breaks out at home? Do they know the “stop, drop and roll” fire safety technique? If you can’t answer each of these questions with a convincing “yes,” read on... While you may think that children under five are too young to be taught fire safety, according to experts, this age group is twice as likely to die in a fire than any other. You can make a lifesaving difference by teaching your children the following: Matches are Tools for Adults, Not Toys Each year, many fires are started accidentally by children playing with matches or lighters. Young children should learn that matches and lighters are tools for adults, not toys for children. A fun way to teach this lesson is to have your children collect pictures from magazines of things that are safe to play with, such as dolls or building blocks, and things that are not safe to play with, such as matches, lighters, and candles. Then you can play a game with the cut-out pictures by placing them in a box, drawing them out one at a time, and having the children say whether the object is safe or unsafe and rewarding the children for correct answers. Get Out and Stay Out During a fire, young children often instinctively try to hide from smoke and flames. Sometimes they even hide from firefighters. Let your children hear the sound the smoke alarm makes, and explain that the sound means that they should get out and stay out of the

building. Also, let your children see a firefighter dressed in protective gear (either in a picture or in person) and explain that a firefighter will help in a fire. Prepare a home fire escape plan with your children and practice the escape route with fire drills at least twice a year. An escape plan should include two ways off every floor, in case one exit is blocked by smoke or flames, and a designated meeting area outside of the home. Crawl Low Under Smoke As part of your fire drills, teach your children that in the event of a fire, they should crawl out on their hands and knees where the air will be cleaner and cooler. Teach this by stretching out a bedsheet two feet above the floor to represent the “pretend” smoke. Have your children crawl under the sheet to a planned exit. Stop, Drop and Roll This easy safety measure can save a child’s life if their clothing catches fire, and it is also fun to practice. Have your children pretend that their clothes are on fire, and then tell them to. STOP where they are and what they are doing. DROP to the floor as quickly as possible. ROLL over and over, covering their face with their hands until the flames are out. By taking a few moments to plan and practice these drills, you could save your most valuable possessions - your children.
