Easy Ways to

Update Your Kitchen The kitchen is most often the heart of the home, but it can also be one of the most expensive updates to a new abode. Large tasks such as relocating plumbing lines, knocking out cabinets, and purchasing a new set of appliances usually contribute to the high cost of updating the kitchen. However, there are simpler ways to refresh the kitchen without putting a dent in your wallet.

1. PAINT THE CABINETS

Replacing cabinets with new oak or walnut ones can easily drive up the price of your upgrade, and are often unnecessary. Instead, try painting your original cabinets. Painting the cabinets with a fresh coat of white has the power of opening up a small kitchen, and can make it seem a lot more spacious. To create a kitchen with a little more personality, try painting your upper cabinets a light color, such as white, cream or light blue; and paint your lower cabinets a darker color, like slate, navy, or black. Chalkboard paint is another great option, and allows your cabinets to have a more practical use, such as keeping track of needed grocery items, important dates, or cabinet contents. Meanwhile, the kids can get creative with the lower cabinets, and hopefully leave your walls alone!

2. ADD UNIQUE TILES Tile is a great way to add color, pattern and personality to your kitchen without spending a lot of money. For a classic look, try a simple white subway tile backsplash. This can brighten up the kitchen without making it look too busy. If you crave a splash of color, try using varied bright colored or patterned tiles on the kitchen floor. Picking up a navy floral print tile can bring color and diversity to an all-white kitchen.

3. UPDATE & ALTERNATE FIXTURES & APPLIANCES

Fixtures and appliances are most frequently used and often incur wear and tear very quickly. The good news is that changing out your handles and knobs is as easy as using a screwdriver. Hardware stores often have a wide variety of unique and colorful knobs that can add an instant dash of color. If you are cramped for room in the kitchen, try removing the doors from your cabinets. This will give your kitchen an airy feeling and allow you to display some of your nicer decorative pieces and those fancy or funky serving platters and china pieces.

4. SWAP OUT LIGHTING

Adding more light to your kitchen will instantly make it more spacious and inviting. Installing a window can be expensive so, instead, try using light colors and new brighter light bulbs to brighten your space. If the existing recessed lighting is not cutting it, try adding pendant lighting above your kitchen island or stove top area. This will add extra light to your space and create a warm ambiance when desired.

e all know the equation: low inventory means higher prices. Also known as a tight market, this setting can be stressful for buyers, who are trying to snap up their dream home yet keep running into competition. Attempting to purchase a house in this type of market can make the already complex process of buying a home even more overwhelming. The following five tips can help buyers successfully get through the buying process in a tight inventory market:

DETERMINE & STICK TO A BUDGET.

Before beginning the

house hunting process, prospective homebuyers should receive loan preapproval from one or more lenders to verify how

much they can borrow. Then, after taking into account additional costs of ownership such as taxes, utilities and insurance, buyers should determine a final budget they can comfortably afford. When listings are scarce, bidding wars can drive up prices, so

buyers must be prepared to walk away if the asking price surpasses their budget.

IDENTIFY DESIRED NEIGHBORHOODS AND HOME WANTS VERSUS NEEDS. When housing inventory is tight, buyers may

need to compromise on what they believe they want from a

Trusty Maintenance Tips for Your Outdoor Grill We all know that warmer weather means spending more quality time outdoors, relaxing in the pool, working in the garden, or cooking out. At the end of the day, the last thing your barbecue guests need is a grimy steak and an ash-kabob, so follow these simple steps to turn your rusty grill into a trusty grill.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION Think about how often you clean your kitchen. Not only do you wipe it down thoroughly after every meal, but you also do your best to keep it clean and presentable at all times, right? The same principle must apply to your outdoor grill if it’s going to stay ribready all year round. Every time you finish grilling, be sure to scrub the grate with a wire brush before the grill cools. Grills clean more easily when they are still hot. Once you’ve scrubbed off any soot or food residue, wipe down the grilling surface with a high smoking temperature oil such as peanut or vegetable oil. This will preserve the grate for your next meal. We recommend using tongs to rub down the grate with an oil-soaked paper towel. Like a cast iron skillet, a grill grate should stay seasoned with oil to prevent corrosion.

IT’S A DIRTY JOB, BUT SOMEONE’S GOT TO DO IT Rustic simplicity is one of the charms of grilling with charcoal, but it’s not for those who don’t like to get their hands dirty. Ash piles up quickly inside charcoal grills and must be scooped out. This ash can clog your grill vents, which can block airflow and get your food dirty, making it difficult to maintain a fire. Ash should be cleaned out before every grill use, but do not discard ashes while they are still warm. Keep a scoop and a dedicated trash bin near your grill, and always scoop out ash as the first step of any cookout. Remember, fire adds depth of flavor to food. Ash just gets it dirty. Grease can accelerate corrosion and start fires. If you have a gas grill, check the catch-pan liner before each use. Clean or replace the liner if it’s messy. Grease catchers are easier to clean if they are not full, so don’t let them get out of control or you’ll have an unctuous mess on your hands. That’s not a lesson you want to learn the hard way. In charcoal grills, grease accumulates on the bottom and sides of the grill walls. Using a spray bottle filled with white vinegar, clean the inside of your grill. Spray the grill walls and let the vinegar soak for an hour to loosen baked-on particles, and then scrub with an abrasive pad. Vinegar has excellent cleansing properties and is always safe to use around food, so cleaning your grill in this way twice a year is sufficient.

ON CLOSER INSPECTION Now that you know how to keep your grill clean, it’s time to keep it safe. You may want your cookout to be the talk of the town, but you don’t want it to end up on the evening news. Check the legs and joints of your grill for rust as well as loose or missing fasteners. An unstable grill could create an accidental opportunity to walk across hot coals. If your grill has wheels, lubricate them regularly. If you’re cooking with gas, check for leaks by opening the valves and spraying them with soapy water. If bubbles form anywhere, it may be time to replace those parts.
