The Garage on 25: An Upcycled Lifestyle FLETCHER, NC - The Garage on 25 is as much an experience as it is a hub for the arts. The owners of The Garage on 25 have taken an eclectic approach to their Fletcher, NC artisan mall, mixing 80 artists, craftspeople and vintage pickers together under one roof. Combined with a café, a music venue and an active art studio, The Garage spotlights the colorful local arts scene and people in western North Carolina. Four women gathered in the summer of 2016, and decided to create something new in Northern Henderson County, stemming from their passion and love for the arts and for the wonderful talent located in this region. Three of the partners are natives of Tryon, N.C. and grew up together - Ellen McCown Schwab, Lisa Preston Clark and Susan Brady. Kaye Youngblood, the fourth partner, is a native of Fletcher, and taught Ellen and Lisa’s children during her career at Hendersonville High. The enterprise is very much a business, but also like a family business in many ways: Susan’s son Stephen Morris runs the sales desk; Kaye’s son Jake works on projects after school; Lisa’s husband Rick wears many hats; cousins, parents, kids, friends of the partners and also of the Garage’s 80 vendors – everyone lends a hand. Represented are acclaimed folk artists, handmade furniture craftspeople, and visual artists of all types, potters, and creative people who re-purpose upcycle and recycle items April 2018 | 50 + Living
into delightful creations. Not to mention the very talented group of vintage pickers – furniture, home décor, clothing and the unexpected. The shop is about all things fanciful… the collectable and the desirable.
Workshops and classes in the Garage’s art studio, officially “The Studio Underground”, are taught by the Studio’s Artists-in-Residence, whom are also Garage vendors. Filling the Studio Underground’s calendar are: · Acrylic Painting – teaching the art of painting with acrylics, focusing on a variety of subjects, and one very popular pet portraiture class where you can “Paint Your Pet” · “Found Object” Jewelry – transforming a beloved or unusual item into wearable art continued on page 7 Page 5

The Psychology of the Color Blue From social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Tumblr to technology companies, including NASA, Dell, Sprint, and HP, blue is the most common color used in company logos. In fact, 33% of the world’s top brands use blue. Why do so many companies use blue? Several psychology studies point to blue as being one of the most effective branding colors. While blue is commonly considered a “boy’s color,” a study called Colour Assignment found that 57% of men and 35% of women claimed blue as their favorite color. The study also found that blue was favored by 42% of all participants, making it more popular than any other color. Blue’s popularity was also consistent among all age groups. The study also found that blue was the color most associated with reliability (43%), trust (34%), and security (28%). Blue was the second most popular color to be associated with high quality (20%) and high technology (23%). Black scored most favorably in both those categories. Blue was also considered to be the third most courageous color (22%) behind red (28%) and purple (29%). Blue also expresses calmness and tranquility. For this reason, people have an easier time concentrating in a blue room, and weightlifters can lift more weight in a blue gym. Blue functions as an appetite suppressant, unlike red which increases appetite. That explains why Weight Watchers uses a blue logo while McDonald’s, KFC, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, and other fast-food chains all use red. Be careful how you use the color blue, however. Certain shades can evoke sadness and coldness. Just ask Picasso. Ee 50 + Living | April 2018
Guaranteed Income — for Life By Jocelyn Black Hodes | DailyWorth
If you’d retired, or were planning to, around 2008 you probably found yourself in big trouble. When the stock market crashed, many people saw their hard-earned retirement nest eggs lose 35 to 40 percent of their value in what seemed like a blink of the eye. Ouch. For those nearing retirement age, that meant a serious revision of their retirement plan and serious doubts about the 4-percent withdrawal rule. This rule, which was believed to be fail-safe for years, claims that withdrawing 4 percent of your savings during the first year of retirement and increasing that dollar amount by 3 percent in each subsequent year to keep up with inflation would prevent you from running out of money for 30 years. Now, even the seemingly conservative 4-percent withdrawal rule is probably too risky. Is the dream of “guaranteed income for life” just a dream? Maybe not. One solution is to work longer, or you can significantly scale back your lifestyle in retirement and make due with less. Another solution? Consider supplementing your retirement savings portfolio with an annuity. Since 2008, more and more financial experts are praising annuities as possibly the best strategy to hedge longevity. (And since women live longer than men, that’s a particular concern for us.) An annuity is a contract between you and an insurance company that can provide you with a reliable income stream for a certain period of time in exchange for a lump-sum investment or series of investments. There are three main types of annuities: fixed, indexed, and variable. Depending on your timing and income needs, you may choose an immediate annuity, which begins paying income ASAP, or a deferred annuity, which gives you the ability to grow your investment account and income potential. In a fixed annuity, you get a guaranteed rate of return based on current interest rates and periodic payments in a fixed amount based on your account value at the time you decide to receive income. These payments can last a certain amount of time, like 20 years, or for life or the continued on page 10 April 2018 | 50 + Living

in fees that will reduce your account performance. For someone in retirement or close to it, an immediate annuity could be a smart way to protect yourself from outliving your money and from market risk. Just keep in mind that choosing an immediate annuity means giving up control of your investment, so you need to be prepared to make that sacrifice.
lives of you and your spouse. The longer the payments are set to last, the lesser the payment amount will be. An indexed annuity gives you the chance of earning a greater return than a fixed annuity typically based on the performance of the S&P 500 Index. However, that greater return is capped and is usually no more than 8%. Indexed annuities also guarantee a minimum contract value, regardless of index performance. A variable annuity gives you the option of investing your payments in the market (typically mutual funds) and earning an unlimited return. However, you can also lose money based on how your investments perform, and just as your rate of return varies, your income will as well. Annuities often include a death benefit and a variety of other optional features, for added fees. Variable annuities offer “living benefits” that can include protecting your account from losing value, guaranteeing your minimum payment, and allowing large withdrawals without penalty (many annuities come with a “surrender period” during which you would have to pay a penalty fee to withdraw your money). The more features you get in a contract, the more you will pay Page 10
If you’re at least 10 years away from retirement, a variable annuity could make sense, but only if you are in the small minority of people maxing out all other tax-deferred retirement plans. While annuities in general are complex products and require thorough research and education, variable annuities tend to be the most confusing and fee-heavy. Unfortunately, annuities have a history of being sold by agents who are eager to make big commissions and do not explain them as well as they should and disclose all of the restrictions and costs upfront. So make sure you do your homework, shop around, and ask lots of questions! Bottom line: In today’s world of disappearing company pensions, questionable Social Security and market volatility, annuities are powerful tools that should be seriously considered as part of anyone’s retirement plan. With the proper due diligence, an annuity can make the dream of guaranteed income for life a reality. White Oak Financial Management, Inc. can help find the right annuity for you if you would like to have some guaranteed income in retirement that acts like a pension, or if you want help in forming a complete retirement income plan designed to last your lifetime. 5 Hot Tub Health Benefits
Many homeowners dismiss purchasing a hot tub for their home as being a luxury item that they don’t really need. But there’s more to a hot tub than just recreational use. Hot tubs provide a number of health benefits that anyone can take advantage of. Before dismissing the idea of purchasing a hot tub, consider the following 5 health benefits that hot tubs provide: • Relieve stress - The jets that are in a hot tub have the same effect as a massage. They help to reduce the tension in your body through the use of pressure as well as the heat of the water. Additionally, the buoyancy of the water creates a weightlessness effect that can relax you. Relieving your stress is an important part of both your mental and physical health. High stress levels not only affect your mental state in a negative manner, they can begin affecting you physically as well. Sitting in a hot tub after a particularly stressful day is a great way to reduce your stress levels. • Page 12
Improve sleep - Anyone that has trouble going to
sleep at night will benefit from using a hot tub. According to many studies done on the subject, simply spending anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes in a hot tub right before you go to bed can help to improve your sleep. This is because the hot tub will help to raise your body’s temperature. Once you get out, the sudden drop in your body’s temperature can help to induce sleep. • Improve circulation - The heat produced by hot tubs helps to open up blood vessels, which in turn helps to decrease your blood pressure. This helps to ease the flow of blood and improve your circulation. • Improve Type 2 Diabetes - If you suffer from type 2 diabetes, then spending at least half an hour a day in a hot tub for six days a week can help to lower your blood sugar, lose weight and improve your sleep pattern. • Muscle and joint pain relief - If you suffer from pain in your joints or muscles, then using a hot tub is an excellent way to relieve that pain. The jets help 50 + Living | April 2018
to massage your muscles while the heat of the water helps to relax them, thereby relieving the pressure on your nerves. Your body weight will also be reduced by 90 percent due to the buoyancy of the water, which helps to relieve pressure from your joints. Individuals who suffer from arthritis will especially benefit from a session in a hot tub. In fact, the Arthritis Foundation has stated that spending time in a hot tub can help to relax muscles, decrease pain and stiffness and make the performance of daily activities much easier for individuals suffering from arthritis. Additionally, if you suffer from chronic pain, spending short sessions in a hot tub can help provide pain relief. These five health benefits are well worth the investment of a hot tub in your home. Not to mention that a hot tub is an incredibly enjoyable feature to have in your home as well! Ee

Spring Vegetables are Here! Three Simple Recipes to Celebrate the Crops
The last of the snow has melted and winter winds have given way to warm spring breezes. Those hearty soups and rich stews that kept you fueled for the last few months all of a sudden seem a little heavy, a little too much at the end of a sunny day. It’s spring vegetables you crave. Time for a visit to the produce section of the grocery store or trek to the farmer’s market to check out the new crop of fresh veggies.
Asparagus A sure sign of spring is the abundant availability of asparagus, a versatile spring vegetable that you can use as a salad or appetizer course, a main course, or a side dish. Asparagus is loaded with fiber, vitamins, and trace elements, but it also tastes good. Its unique stalk shape makes it a great finger food for kids. In fact, it’s a great finger food for anybody: etiquette experts agree that it’s OK to pick up a stalk and enjoy! The best asparagus is the bunch you buy that’s fresh and local. The season is short, so indulge while you can. Look for firm, fat stalks with tightly closed buds on top. A great way to prepare them is to roast them.
2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 grinds each freshly ground sea salt and pepper Lemon Directions 1. Preheat over to 425F. 2. Wash and dry the asparagus. 3. Select one stalk, hold it at both ends and snap. Use this stalk as a guide to trim the rest of the bunch, cut off the tough bottom on all stalks at the point where the test stalk snapped. 4. Place stalks on a baking sheet. 5. Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. 6. Roast until a little charred and just tender, about 20 minutes. 7. Remove from oven, lightly squeeze lemon over all, then garnish with lemon zest.

NOTE: Use leftover roast asparagus in tossed salads, or dress with vinaigrette and serve on a bed of Bibb lettuce as an elegant first course.

Peas Spring peas are delightful. Sweet, nourishing and packed with fiber, they are a great source of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and iron. Peas are great in soups and salads and make a wonderful side dish. Even better, they can dress up and transform prepared foods. Try adding a handful to canned vegetable soup or canned pea soup; heat as usual--the result looks and taste like you just made a batch of homemade soup. You can do this with other spring vegetables, as well. Here’s a simple pasta dish featuring fresh spring peas that you can serve hot as a main dish or cold, as a pasta salad.
Bowtie Pasta with Peas Ingredients
then stir occasionally until heated through.
½ box bowtie pasta, prepared according to package directions
6. Salt and pepper to taste.
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup diced yellow onion 1 cup diced baked ham
7. Add rice wine vinegar and gently mix. 8. In a large serving bowl, combine hot, drained pasta, 1-2 tablespoons of pasta liquid, and pea mixture. Toss until well combined. Top with minced parsley.
1 cup freshly shelled spring peas
Serves four.
½ cup soft golden raisins
NOTE: If serving hot, pass a bowl of freshly grated Parmesan. If serving cold, reserve the minced parsley until just before serving, then toss with chilled bowtie pasta with peas.
¾ cup large walnut pieces Freshly ground sea salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar 1-2 tablespoons pasta water 2 tablespoons fresh minced parsley Directions 1. Prepare the pasta while you make the topping 2. Gently heat the olive oil in a large frying pan. 3. Add the onion, and sauté until just translucent. 4. Add ham, and sauté until you seem some light browning. 5. Add peas, raisins, and walnut pieces. Mix together, April 2018 | 50 + Living
Spring Onions Spring onions are the show-stoppers of the onion family. They’re gorgeous to look at and make great subject matter for artists. For your purposes, though, they make great subject matter for eating. Many people confused spring onions with scallions. Although related, the two should be treated as separate vegetables. Spring onions have long green tops (hence the confusion) and a super shiny bulbous bottom, usually white, sometimes red. All parts are edible. Onions are not nutritional powerhouses, but they do contain a lot of the fiber inulin. Inulin is a great source of nutrition for the “good bacteria” in your gut, so it’s an important part of a good diet. Here’s an incredibly versatile recipe that showcases the beauty queen of spring vegetables, spring onions. Page 15
Triple Play Onion Spread
2. Add sliced white onions, reserving ½ cup for later.
You can use this the spread as is for sandwiches, bagels, or crackers. Add sour cream and it becomes a dip. Let it melt on a steaming baked potato. Yum!
3. Stir to coat onions, cook, stirring occasionally until the onions are lightly brown. Be patient. This takes time.
Ingredients
4. As the onions begin to brown, add a grind or two each of salt and pepper.
1 tablespoon olive oil 3 tablespoons butter
5. When the onions are brown, remove from heat and let cool.
2 pounds sliced spring onions, bottoms only
6. Dice the remaining half cup of slice onions.
Freshly ground sea salt and pepper
7. Combine all ingredients; taste to see if additional salt, pepper, or Worcestershire sauce is necessary.
½ cup sliced spring onions, bottoms only, reserved ¾ cup chopped green tops spring onions 8 ounces cream cheese, softened ¼ cup butter, softened
8. Pack into a crock, or shape into a ball if you are serving with crackers. 9. Refrigerate overnight to let flavors blend. Keeps well refrigerated for up to two weeks.
½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
Yield: About two cups.
1/3 cup small dice black olives
Spring vegetables are a delicious way to celebrate the new season. As they start showing up on your grocer’s shelves or at the farmer’s market, don’t be afraid to bring some home and experiment. Once you start, you’ll begin a new adventure in good eating. Ee

Spring clean! When to Throw Away Common Household Items
Though many people would be horrified to eat something from their fridge if it expired 3 months earlier, the same can’t be said for those everyday household items without expiry dates. Unfortunately it’s much easier to forget the less obvious items that need to be replaced once in a while.
Vitamins Health supplements don’t expire so much as go stale. Vitamins past their prime do nothing, so it’s a waste of time to hold onto them. As a rule of thumb, give them two years, even if the bottle doesn’t have an expiration date. continued on page 18
Mattresses Do you know how old your mattress is? It’s true that you can turn a mattress over or get it deep cleaned every so often, but at some point you’ll need to face facts and part with a mattress that’s over 8 years old or so. Throw it out sooner if you’ve noticed permanent dents, smells, stains or squeaks. An old mattress is not just gross -- it’s unhygienic. Toss it and you’ll rid your home of allergy-causing dust and bacteria, and give your spine the proper support it needs.
Contact Lens Solution It looks more or less like harmless water, but expired contact lens solution can sting eyes, cause damage to the retina and even give you an infection. You have three months from when you break the seal; throw away the rest, no matter how good a deal you got on that massive bottle. April 2018 | 50 + Living

Spring Clean! continued from page 17 Pillows No matter how good the quality or what they’re filled with, most pillows are on a rapid decline past a year and a half. The fibers will have a chance to collect allergens and microorganisms and warp out of shape if kept for much longer. Opt for a cheaper pillow and replace it regularly, and if you can’t bear to throw it out, re-purpose into bedding for your pets.
Smoke alarms and fire extinguishers No, they don’t last forever. Fire extinguishers can lose pressure over time -- a nasty fact that you don’t want to discover when it’s too late. Throw away extinguishers after 10 years, or, if you bought it with a service plan, get it regassed and checked every few years. Smoke alarms can also quietly become less effective after a few years when their sensors become dull. Check a smoke alarm every six months and replace the batteries once a year. Even the best smoke alarm will probably need to be replaced around the 10-year mark, however.
Eye makeup The more moisture in any given product, the more likely it is to harbor germs over time. While dry powders, eye shadows and pencils can last almost indefinitely, things like mascara and wet liquid liners can become home to bacteria after a while. Say goodbye to any wet eye makeup that’s older than 6 months.
Toothbrushes It’s easy not to notice when toothbrushes start looking a little worse for wear. Whether it looks like it’s old or not, throw away toothbrushes you’ve had for more than 3 or 4 months. Even if the bristles are still stiff, there are entire colonies of bacteria that will have settled in the nooks and crannies. Get a fresh one instead. Spring cleaning is not just for your fridge or wardrobe -- other longer-lived items in your life also need replacing every once in a while. The products and appliances we tend to think of as permanent need replacing or at the least regular maintenance to make sure they’re still safe and effective. Ee

Think Globally, Invest Locally:
A Sustainable Real Estate Investment in Marshall By Cheri B. Torres, Ph.D and Colleen Watson
Asheville and Western North Carolina are known for a number of things: beauty, food, beer, music, and people. Visitors are flocking here in record numbers and in recent years many more people have decided to call this home. The beauty of this area is readily apparent. What also sets us apart is our support of local businesses, our passion for preservation and our focus on sustainability and quality of life. Today, it’s more important than ever to continue and indeed, increase that focus. More and more communities are exploring public/private investment structures that enable people to invest their money in local, income producing investments instead of the stock market. The benefits are many. Funding needed to support sustainable municipal activities is raised without taxation. Investments and proceeds from those investments stay primarily local, fueling the local economy. Investing locally means people have a vested interest in the success of their investment; they stay involved and supportive. And finally, being satisfied with a reasonable return on investment keeps the cost of living in an area down for everyone. Are there reasons for you to consider investing locally? In addition to those above, here are some other reasons to consider. The world as we know it is changing faster than we can imagine. Page 22
There is much evidence that some systems are in decline and if not changed, they will collapse. For those of us over 60, our fears are fueled by threats to reduce or eliminate social security, Medicare/ Medicaid and many social services and environmental programs. The stock market appears stable one minute and volatile the next, which is stress-inducing at best for those who are invested in it. In the face of this uncertainty and ambiguity, local investments that provide an on-going ROI are stable and tend to generate a consistent income. In addition to care and commitment to one’s community, it is the primary financial reason to make such local investments. If you’re committed to Western North Carolina and want to help sustain the quality of life that brings so many people to the area, you may want to consider investing locally. Sustainable Real Estate Investment is one of those options. Such investments are made for income as well as to enhance environmental, social, and economic societal impact. Is Sustainable Real Estate Investment aligned with your values? If the following criteria resonate with you, then you’re a candidate for such investments:
Consistent financial performance while contributing to advancements in social, economic, environmental and governance practices. 50 + Living | April 2018
Providing important societal or environmental benefits. Managing risk and fulfilling fiduciary duties. Solid financial performance over the long run.
If you’re aligned, read on! An exciting sustainable real estate investment opportunity has opened up in Marshall, NC. This historic town in Madison County is a short distance from Asheville and grew up alongside the beautiful French Broad River. Main Street houses artists’ studios and galleries, restaurants, music venues, and other local shops. On the National Register of Historic Places, 90 S. Main Street is a 7640 square foot building with an additional 3900 square feet of basement space. It is slated to become a central hub in downtown Marshall. Michael Torres, retired Genetics Professor and Carroll Hauptle, a retired lawyer have a two-fold agenda for this building. The first is to model a sustainable real estate collective that will own the building. Michael and Carroll believe there is something valuable about shared ownership. They are both investors, and they are looking for like-minded people interested in joining them in providing space for social profit ventures. Social profit organizations are those whose missions focus on people, place and planet; most of the time these are nonprofit organizations. They envision this building will offer rental property to artists, healers, and other social profit organizations. The LLC that owns the building will have a property manager. There are already people lined up to rent space. The second part of the plan will see the main floor of 90 S. Main rented by NexGen Legacy, an incubator and accelerator for social profit organizations formed by Michael and Carroll.
for local artists. For the remainder of the building, Michael and Carroll imagine artist studios, high speed internet and very hip co-working space, small offices, and meeting spaces for workshops and classes, as well as other collaborative programming designed to support the success of local entrepreneurs and people who live in or visit Marshall. Their research shows high demand and low availability for office space and art studios. First things first, however. They are looking for investors interested in a solid real estate investment with a decent ROI from rental income. Several information meetings will be hosted this spring that will provide detailed information. If you’re interested in attending or simply want to learn more, please contact Michael at mysticelan@gmail.com. Michael can share all of the plans for the building. For detailed information about the investment structure, he will put you in touch with Andrew Grant, retired international banker and Investment advisor for the 90 S. Main LLC. If you are a retired professional living in WNC with the time and desire to support social profit organizations, NexGen Legacy could use your expertise. Please contact Michael Torres to discuss your potential involvement. Ee

3 Home Projects That Offer a Great Return on Investment (StatePoint) The warmer months present an excellent opportunity to get outdoors and spruce up your home’s exterior. But if you have limited time and resources, it’s important to prioritize the focus of your efforts. For guidance, consider Remodeling Magazine’s 2018 Cost vs. Value Report, which shows that not all remodeling projects are equal. Here are three spring renovation ideas that will give your property not only a facelift, but offer a great return on investment to boot. Garage Door National data from the 2018 Cost vs. Value Report shows that the project that delivers the highest return on investment is a new upscale garage door. This is a good choice for those looking for better noise control, greater security, curb appeal and convenience. Newer offerings relying on smart home technology can synch with your mobile device to offer conveniences Page 24
like voice control and notifications when you’ve left the garage door open. Manufactured Stone Veneer In the number two slot for sound renovation investments, according to the same report, is manufactured stone veneer, which is a great way to add visual interest to your home exterior (or an interior room, for that matter). Be sure to select products that mimic the texture and color of natural stone, such as the choices from ProVia, which are molded and cast to look like stone harvested from various U.S. geographic regions and are offered in a variety of style and color palettes. The manufacturer offers resources that help make it easy to select and install the best choice for your home or get the look you’ve always wanted. Their visualizer tool, found at ProVia.com, allows you to upload a photo of your home to see how the stone will look on your exterior. 50 + Living | April 2018
Entry Door Replacement Your home’s entry door is one of the first things prospective home buyers will notice, so it’s no surprise that upgrading yours could be a wise investment. The Cost vs. Value report named a new steel door as the third highest cost recouped. However, steel or fiberglass are both good choices for materials when it comes to functionality, durability, energy efficiency, security and versatility in style. For more home renovation ideas and resources, visit ProVia.com. When giving your home a facelift, make it count. Consider those upgrades and renovations that don’t just look good, but also are proven to increase the resale value of your home. Ee

Fight for your sight: 5 tips to fight Age-related Macular Degeneration (BPT) - The ability to see is one of our most precious gifts. Like most things in life, our vision may be impacted as we age. That’s why it’s important to learn about Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Prevalent among older Americans, it affects one in five adults age 65 and older, and is the leading cause of blindness for this population. While there is no cure for this condition, there are steps that you can take to help reduce the risk of progression, including: 1) Schedule routine eye exams. As early stages of AMD may not present any symptoms, you may not think to consult your eye doctor. Keeping routine eye exams that include eye dilation may help to identify the condition early, as well as help maintain overall eye health. 2) Address symptoms immediately. See your eye care professional right away if you experience sudden or gradual changes in vision quality. As AMD progresses, straight lines may appear distorted, central vision may look dark, blurry or white, or changes in color perception may become noticeable. If you have been diagnosed with AMD, you should also regularly check your eyes with an Amsler grid tool that helps track incremental vision changes. 3) Lead a healthy lifestyle. If you smoke, quit. Regular exercise can also help to maintain eye health and minimize the risk of progression. Other risk factors for AMD include obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Page 26
4) Eat right. A diet rich in green, leafy vegetables as well as healthy fatty acids may also help reduce the risk of progression. Foods that contain these nutrients include: spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage, romaine and chard, and fatty fish such as salmon, sea bass, herring, whitefish, mackerel, anchovies and sardines. 5) Consider supplements recommended by the National Eye Institute. If you’ve been diagnosed with moderate to advanced AMD, The National Eye Institute recommends taking a specific nutrient formula based on the AREDS 2 study, that may help reduce your risk of progression. Talk with your doctor to see if an AREDS 2 formula eye vitamin is right for you. To raise awareness of this public health issue, Bausch + Lomb, in collaboration with Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight, has launched the Why Eye Fight campaign. To learn more about AMD, what steps you can take to help fight for your sight or to watch the patient stories or PSA, visit www.WhyEyeFight.com. You can also join the online conversation and share your story using #WhyEyeFight on Facebook and Twitter. Ee

Invest in preventative care “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is just as applicable to pets as it is to their human caregivers. One of the most important things a pet parent can do to ensure the ongoing health of any animal is to bring them in for annual checkups whether they are experiencing health issues or not.
Simple Ways to Save on Your Pet’s Medical Costs (BPT) - Pet parents know that there’s nothing like the love of furry family members. Keeping your pets healthy is a priority because you want them to live as long as possible. However, health care costs for pets are expensive, and if you are dealing with additional expenses such as prescriptions for chronic conditions, it can become a burden to your budget. Fortunately, there are several things pet owners can do proactively to keep pets healthy and save money on health care costs.
During wellness checkups, veterinarians can screen for a variety of health conditions. They provide insight on diseases, age-related concerns, dental health, nutritional considerations and so much more. Plus you’re able to provide your pet with important vaccinations. Regular checkups help vets identify problems sooner rather than later, and this can translate to more affordable health care costs to pet parents in the long run.
Get an Inside Rx Pets prescription card Costs for managing your pet’s health can be a bear with pet owners spending more than $8 billion on prescription and over-the-counter medications annually. The Inside Rx Pets program offers savings on commonly prescribed medications such as insulin and antibiotics, as well as seizure, glaucoma and anti-inflammatory drugs. The Inside Rx Pets savings card is

not insurance; it is a savings card you can use for certain human medications that may be prescribed for your pet. A complete list of the medications with which you can use the Inside Rx Pet card, as well as pricing information and other details, can be found at https://InsideRx.com/Pets. Benefiting from these discounts is easy for pet parents: If your pet’s veterinarian writes a prescription for an applicable medication, simply download the free discount card from the Inside Rx Pets website and present it with the prescription at one of the 40,000 participating pharmacies located across the U.S. that fill prescriptions for animals. These include national chains such as Kroger Family of Pharmacies, CVS and Walgreens (yes, the same pharmacies you go to for your own medications).
Exercise and focus on nutrition Obesity is a growing concern for many pets. Poor nutrition paired with limited exercise causes pets to put on additional weight. This weight can put them at higher risk for health concerns like diabetes, osteoarthritis and ligament injuries. These health concerns not only risk the quality of life for Fluffy or Fido, but also can deeply impact your pocketbook. Pets, just like humans, require exercise and proper nutrition to stay healthy and feel their best. Whether that’s letting your rabbit out of the cage to run or going on a walk with your dog, be sure to make regular exercise a part of your fur family’s routine. If you’re unsure what is appropriate for your pet, call your veterinarian or bring it up at a wellness visit. They’ll be delighted you reached out for more information to keep your pet healthy.
Start an emergency fund Choosing between a pet and an unexpected health expense is something no one wants to experience. Being prepared can make a big difference when facing difficult decisions, so it’s wise to have savings set aside in case of a rainy day. Some people are starting pet health savings accounts (HSAs) that are similar to the accounts that people hold for themselves to pay for medical expenses. Whether you choose that path or a traditional savings account, when you have an emergency fund you won’t have to worry about any unexpected expenses, so you can simply focus on getting your pet well again. Being proactive is important for keeping your pets healthy for many years. From scheduling annual wellness visits to taking advantage of the Inside Rx Pets discount card, there are many easy actions pet parents can take today to reduce costs so furry family members stay well.
