Staying Fit through Outdoor Activities By Colleen Watson

Summer is begging for us to be out and about in the fresh air and natural surroundings. No excuses as we head toward retirement or are enmeshed within it. As a matter of fact, many of our “over 50” crowd are in the best shape of their lives. Yes, okay, some are content to slow down, but many see this time as an opportunity to live a challenging and active lifestyle. And, here we are in Western North Carolina, an area ripe with fitness opportunities and outdoor activities. Summertime brings possibilities for excellent hiking, cycling, backpacking, camping, and the myriad river activities like canoeing and kayaking. For those who need to ease into fitness, a walk in the woods over a less strenuous route might suffice as encouragement on the way to a goal of a moderate hike up to Rattlesnake Lodge or the more aggressive one to the summit of Mount Pisgah. If you’ve been sedentary for a while and are looking to get back into some of these summer activities, it’s best to start slowly so as not to injure yourself. Setting a regular morning routine is a great way to build up your stamina and strength. This can be as simple as doing some basic stretching exercises and walking. Getting yourself to the gym is great, but walking in nature can stimulate your mind and restore your mood. It can also help kickstart your energy. July 2018 | 50 + Living

There are three basic areas that can help you get fit and ready for outdoor activity. It’s also important to keep working on these areas as we continue to age. Depending on your current activity level, remember to check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise regime. Strengthening your core muscles. How many times have we heard this one? But it impacts nearly everything we do. For example, a strong core is important for posture, flexibility and balance. Also, good posture lessens the wear and tear on your spine. Think of your core as a central stairway. Any type of movement ripples up and down connecting to other “floors;” actually even impacting how well your arms and legs move. According to the Harvard Medical School, “Your core stabilizes your body, allowing you to move in any direction, even on the bumpiest terrain, or stand in one spot without losing your balance. Viewed this way, core exercises can lessen your risk of falling.” A strong, flexible core impacts nearly everything you do. Balance maintenance. To help prevent falls, some people compensate by changing their gate. But strengthening your core and doing lower-body strength exercises can help improve your balance. Balance exercises are as simple as standing on one foot and walking heel-to-toe. Tai Chi is also a good alternative. Your continued on page 5 Page 3

Restoring flexibility. Improving your flexibility will provide you with more freedom of movement. Stretching exercises will increase your flexibility, which helps you when participating in physical activities. Yoga is a great way to increase your flexibility, or there are other basic stretching exercises that you can add to your routine.

If you’ve maintained a certain level of fitness, and can jump right into some summer activities, there are many options available.

While flexibility is tied to balance, stretching will not improve your strength and endurance. It’s the combination of stretching, strength or weight training, and increasing your activity level that will help you meet your fitness goals. Many people find it easier to exercise or participate in activities with others. For those of you with partners or spouses, encourage them to share the experience with you. For singles, it’s always a good idea to find a friend. It makes it easier if you’re meeting someone to take that walk or hike, or even to meet up at the gym. Whatever you decide, find something you like and do that, as you’ll be more apt to follow through and continue on. It’s important to remember to use common sense when you’re learning something new or getting back into a fitness routine July 2018 | 50 + Living

Hiking trails Western North Carolina has hundreds of hiking trails at all levels. The US Forest Service lists trails by three difficulty levels — easy, moderate and difficult—however, because of the many trails in this region, some hiking information listed online is further separated, generally at the difficulty level. You can hike close to Asheville in places like the NC Arboretum, the Bent Creek area and the Biltmore Estate grounds (accessible by members). You can also hike on trails along the French Broad River. Trails can also be accessed close by from the Blue Ridge Parkway. There’s a great online magazine dedicated to hiking, running and backpacking trails. You can find interactive trail maps, directions, elevation profiles, as well as detailed trail descriptions continued on page 7 Page 5

Cycling in the Blue Ridge Mountains By Colleen Watson

Blue Ridge Parkway Pisgah Forest Photo credit: Sycamore Cycles On a typical drive through Western North Carolina and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, you’ll encounter many cyclists enjoying the ride. This region welcomes many individuals who wish to experience the rush that comes with the downhill ride after the exertion of pedaling up a mountain. In addition to road biking, mountain biking on some of the available trails can be an exhilarating experience. While the bikes and the skills required are quite different, roadies and MTBers who take to the hills and mountains tend to take their disciplines seriously. Don’t let the mountainous terrain put you off, however. Whether you are an expert or a less experienced rider, there are plenty of great rides that are not too hilly in the Hendersonville-Brevard area. You can also cycle along the French Broad River valleys in Buncombe County. Cycling here can be a wonderful experience and quite liberating, as there are a wide range of challenge levels throughout the area and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The beauty of this area cannot be denied and a ride along the Page 8

river, through the woods or Pisgah’s backcountry and wilderness areas make for some excellent adventures and day trips.

Cycling clubs In WNC there are many enthusiastic cyclists and cycling clubs that provide support and regular group activities. In 1974, as an outcome of a community meeting on bikeways planning, the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club (BRBC) was formed. It was decided that a club was needed to offer organized rides and to serve as an advocacy group to work on developing a system of bikeways. With little support in the early years from both city government and residents for the development of bikeways, the group turned their attention to recreational rides. The club reorganized in 1990 and has continued to hold annual fundraisers and build on their successes, activities and events. Membership has continued to grow and organized rides for road cyclists are held weekly. 50 + Living | July 2018

Members of the BRBC focus on networking for cycling enthusiasts, bicycling advocacy, representing cycling interests to the US Forest Service, trail maintenance and adopt-a-highway cleanups. The club supports the community and WNC through their mission to promote healthy and fun lifestyles through cycling in Western North Carolina. They do this by providing education, cycling opportunities and developing new cycling programs. They also work with health and fitness organizations, existing organizations on cycling programs and governments on transportation planning. The BRBC also has an extensive route library that is accessible to members on the RidewithGPS.com website. Routes can be searched and selected by length, total climb and location. This is a great tool for members. To become a member, or to access their membership information, events calendar, resources, and advocacy updates, check their website at: blueridgebicycleclub.org. There are several clubs in the area focused on mountain biking. • Since 1988, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) encourages low impact riding, volunteer trail work, cooperation among trail user groups, grass roots advocacy and innovative trail management solutions. Website: imba.com • The Nantahala Area Sorba (Southern Off Road Bicycling Association) is the voice for mountain biking in Way Western North Carolina. This chapter is the primary custodian of the Tsali trails and keeps them in top shape for riders around the globe to enjoy. Website: pisgahareasorba.org • Trips for Kids WNC provides mountain bike outings and environmental education for children who would otherwise not be exposed to such activities. The WNC chapter is a member of Trips for Kids International and has provided outings for more than 2000 kids since it began. Website: tripsforkidswnc.com

Cycling advocacy and infrastructure Cycling in WNC is a long time passion and the need for the city to build better bike and pedestrian infrastructure has been at the forefront of the cycling culture. Asheville on Bikes is a 501c3 July 2018 | 50 + Living

Photo credit: Sycamore Cycles advocacy program that supports and works toward empowering our community to revision and rebuild its infrastructure to yield inclusive results. In June, Asheville on Bikes partnered with the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and AARP on a Tactical Urbanism project. The project’s goal is to design, install, and track months-long experimental changes to Coxe Avenue in Asheville, and to test street design ideas, using a community-driven process for both planning and building. The project will demonstrate a fiscally responsible test→evaluate→build approach to street design. By coordinating with the City of Asheville, and encouraging community participation through each step of the process, the test results will directly inform the pending redesign of Coxe Avenue, which is funded and scheduled to begin over the winter of 2018/2019. In addition to their advocacy program, Asheville on Bikes sponsors nearly half a dozen big group rides around town each year. These are the type of rides that are suitable for all ages, so families can bring their kids and have a great time. For more information, check out ashevilleonbikes.com. continued on page 10 Page 9

for possible pitfalls like potholes, broken glass or other objects—oh, or the occasional distracted pedestrian. Before tackling the Blue Ridge Mountains, or even some of the mountains and hills within Asheville, you’ll want to get on your road bike and start off on some flatter terrain where the traffic is fairly light. Take shorter rides to begin with and extend them as you feel you’re progressing. If you feel you are just too out of shape, you can always go to the gym for some consistent work on a stationery bike to work on those leg muscles before getting out on the road. Above all, make it fun. Go out with a seasoned cyclist or a friend or family member who may also like to join you on the adventure. And if you’re just getting back into cycling, don’t forget to check with your doctor beforehand.

Cycling and fitness Cycling is a great way to stay fit. Many cyclists over 50 have been riding consistently for many years. Some cyclists who may be slowing down and really thinking seriously before taking that 100-mile ride have switched with their partners to tandem cycling. This can take a bit of getting used to even if you’ve been riding alongside your partner for a while. There’s a certain effort required to synchronize the rhythm of the ride since you’re riding for two. It’s not too late to begin this activity, even if you haven’t been on a bicycle in years. There are many benefits to cycling, both physical and mental. Benefits for the body include working different muscle groups, and improving cardio, endurance and balance. You’ll also find that it sharpens the mind as you’re thinking about the process of riding, paying attention to the road and looking out Page 10

Taylor’d wi Style Made in America By JeanAnn Taylor

The month of July is the perfect time to show your patriotic pride with style. Wearing the colors, or an interpretation of our flag, can express patriotism and love of country. The flag code, written in 1942, determined that as long as the article of clothing is not made from an actual flag, there is no breach of flag etiquette. The first official American flag, made with thirteen stars and thirteen stripes to represent our thirteen original colonies, debuted in 1777. Our current flag has only been around since July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became our country’s fiftieth state. Our flag and its colors are an enduring statement in the world of fashion. In 1989, Ralph Lauren designed what became an iconic sweater featuring our flag positioned over the heart. His loyalty to our country’s flag led him to donate over $10 million to help preserve the aging flag known as the Star-Spangled Banner. This is the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem. It was made in 1813 during the War of 1812, and was originally 42 by 30 feet. Each star is approximately two feet in diameter. Each stripe is approximately 24 inches wide. The flag was sewn with 15 stars and 15 stripes to represent the original colonies, plus two added states (Vermont and Kentucky). Created by professional flag-maker Mary Pickersgill, the StarSpangled Banner now hangs in Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. In 1818, a new Flag Act reduced the number of stripes back to thirteen, and determined that only stars would be added to represent the addition of states. Page 12

One of the most iconic “flag dresses” comes from French designer Catherine Malandrino. Her dress was inspired by the Americana fashion in the film Easy Rider (2001). The longsleeved, chiffon, shirtdress has many overlays creating interesting lines of red, white, and blue. Flag fashion can be found as a literal design, or as a figurative symbol. When wearing a garment with the entire flag displayed, it’s best to consider the visual weight of the flag and limit this accent to one piece. For example, a flag embellished on a t-shirt will look fashionable when worn with a pair of bluejeans or a denim skirt. However, wearing this same t-shirt with red and white striped pants may take the look over-the-top and distract from the patriotic message you are trying to convey. Knowing when to say “enough is enough” will keep you from looking like a star-spangled spectacle. The easiest way to create a patriotic look is with clothes you already own. Denim is considered to be an American fabric and most of us already have some form of denim clothing in our closet. Use this piece as the blue, add a white top, a red belt, and you are ready to watch the fireworks. Flowing, floral sundresses are trendy again this summer. Find one in a mix of red, white, and blue. Add a pair of red sandals, a white wide-brimmed hat, and you are ready for a picnic. White skinny jeans, a red peasant blouse, and a cute, blue baseball cap will make you the hit of the 50 + Living | July 2018

ballgame. A blue skort, a red and white striped boatneck top, and a pair of white Keds is perfect for a stroll through the park. Plaid shirts and shirtdresses, in red, white, and blue are another stylish way to wear the colors of our flag. This classic pattern is both sporty and flattering. Mixing patterns of stripes with polka-dot stars is a whimsical and fun way to express your flag-waving spirit. For a dressier patriotic look, choose a solid color dress in one of our flag colors, and then complete the color theme with accessories. Imagine the attractive look of a red dress, a blue and white floral purse, and nude shoes. Or a white dress accented with a blue belt and red clutch. Another simple, yet chic way to show your American pride is to wear black pants and a red top with a red, white, and blue scarf. America is one of the few places in the world where individuals are free to express their opinions no matter what they are. So, regardless of your political party, celebrate our great nation by wearing our flag colors proudly and respectfully. Ee

Ear infections are common with seasonal and environmental allergies. In addition to rubbing around her ear, your pet is likely to display the following symptoms: • Scratching in and around the ear • Loss of balance • Discharge from the ear that is brown, yellow, or bloody

Could Your Dog or Cat Have Allergies? Dogs and cats often display allergy symptoms differently than people do, which can make it difficult to identify and treat them. Unfortunately, untreated allergies can lead to chronic ear infections and skin issues such as infections and loss of fur. When a dog or cat has an allergy, it typically falls into one of these three categories: Environmental: Seasonal allergies are the most common type of environmental allergy for dogs and cats. Common culprits include pollen, ragweed, dust mites, cigarette smoke, or anything else in the environment that he breathes in and has a reaction to. Typical symptoms include: • Licking excessively on his sides or groin area • Rubbing his face • Scabs • Patches of baldness • Wheezing and inflammation

• Odor from the ear • Hearing loss • Rubbing her ear on the ground or furniture to relieve discomfort • Scabs or crusts inside or outside of the ear If you suspect that your dog or cat has an ear infection, it’s important to contact your veterinarian right away for an evaluation. Treatment typically consists of cleaning your pet’s ears in the office and finishing a course of oral or topical medications at home. Contact Dermatitis: This type of allergy occurs when your pet’s skin touches something he has developed a sensitivity to, such as cleaning products or the ingredients in a flea collar. Symptoms normally include small red bumps, excessive scratching, and possible fur loss. Some pets can develop flea dermatitis if they’re allergic to flea saliva. This will cause nearly non-stop scratching because it’s extremely uncomfortable for animals. Other parasites can cause allergy symptoms as well, which is why year-round parasite prevention is essential. Food Allergies: When a companion animal has allergies, food ingredients are the cause about 15 percent of the time. Corn, wheat, soy, eggs, and several types of meat are the most common offenders. Food allergies can also cause chronic ear and skin infections, along with diarrhea and vomiting. Itching in the armpits, ears, legs, feet, and face are the primary symptoms. Ee

THE BENEFITS OF TAKING Vitamin D3 AS A SUPPLEMENT Also known as the Sunshine Vitamin, vitamin D3 is naturally produced in the skin as a reaction to sunlight. In theory, that makes it an easy vitamin to get enough of. In practice, the majority of adults in Western society are deficient in the Sunshine Vitamin.

absorption of vitamin D3. For those sensitive to sunlight, it can be very tricky to get enough vitamin D without exposing themselves to sunburn or more serious conditions such as melanoma. Vitamin D3 deficiency can cause tiredness, aches, muscles pain, weakness, and stress fractures. It also results in the development of soft or fragile bones. As the majority of people do not get enough sun naturally, it is necessary to take vitamin D3 supplements.

Vitamin D3 plays an important role in regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorous. The vitamin is necessary for normal immune system function and important to the growth and development of healthy bones and teeth. It also helps the body fight certain diseases. Several factors contribute to the wideranging vitamin D3 deficiency in our society. Most people, particularly those who work indoors, simply do not spend enough time outside to absorb the sunlight the body needs to synthesize the vitamin. In urban areas with high levels of air pollution, even people who spend a lot of time outdoors can be deficient, since pollution can obscure certain rays of light that are necessary to produce vitamin D3. Finally, using sunscreen can prevent

Taking vitamin D3 supplements has been shown to reduce the risk of multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and flu. The vitamin also has a role in regulating mood, so taking supplements can help battle depression and anxiety. Thanks to their appetite-suppressing effect, it can also assist in weight loss. Thanks to these positive effects and the widespread vitamin D3 deficiency, nearly everyone can benefit by regularly taking vitamin D3 supplements. Ee

The Great Rose Tasting happens the first Saturday of every month from 10am to 7pm @MetroWines. We pour 6 wines from around the world made from different varietals in different styles. Some of you are thinking that you just don’t like Rose. Maybe you don’t. But maybe you do! Maybe you just have not found the right one. Rose took on a bad reputation with the production of cheap, sweet wines decades ago. But Rose is back and back big. A study by Nielson Corporation, reported by Lettie Teague in Wall Street Journal, shows that retail dollar sales of non-sparkling Rose have increased by 65% this year over last year and sales of sparkling Rose are up 16% But what is Rose? Making Rose is probably the world’s oldest winemaking style. Winemaking techniques including harder pressing to make darker wines were not practiced in ancient times. Grapes were lightly pressed soon after harvest yielding a lightly colored wine, what we now know as Rose. Known as Rosado in Spain and Portugal and Rosato in Italy, Rose is not a grape but rather the process. Basically, Rose is the product of limited contact with the skins of red grapes. The color depends on the grape used and the length of skin contact time. The longer the contact, the darker the Rose. Rose can be made from almost any red grape and can be made from dry to sweet as well as sparkling. And we aim to try them all at our tastings!

A surprise hit, the most popular Rose at The May Great Rose Tasting was Zoe, a Greek Rose made from indigenous grapes, a blend of 70% Agiorgitiko and 30% Moscofilero. “Zoe” means life in Greek and this dry Rose, with ripe cherries, rose petals and a little blue fruit on the nose and palate lives up to it’s name. Only pairing with a little goat cheese could make it better! Coming in a close second was Le Quattro Terre Rosato made from Barbera in Piedmont, Italy. Looks are deceiving with this one! For a wine so light in color, this one is full of flavor. This 100% Barbera Rose is a bright pink in the glass with aromas of strawberry and rose petal leading to a salty, mineral driven finish. Summer salad with salmon is calling! We were surprised again in June when a French blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Negrete and Gamay made by J. Mourat was the favorite. With flavors of white peach, raspberry and orange peel, customers thought this wine was perfect for something spicy like Thai Curry. Perfect for events, J. Mourat Rose is also packaged in splits and wine kegs. Imagine a keg of Rose at your next party! La Villa Real, a 100% Tempranillo Rose from La Mancha Spain was also popular for it’s quality to value ratio! With flavors of raspberry, strawberry, cherry and violet, this dry Rose is just waiting for paella crispy bread and Manchego cheese.

Join us for a tasting. You are sure to find a Rose you like!

4th

of July

Party

Drinks By Gail Fero

A 4th of July Party wouldn’t be the same without themed drinks and nibbles. But while summer party foods are often staples, you can add a bit of pizzazz to your party with gorgeous, tasty and theme-appropriate drinks, suitable for either adults or children. Red, white and blue are the colors of choice and here are three drinks that give you the wow of presentation with a treat for the taste buds.

Combine in large pitcher or punch bowl and chill for five hours before your party. A virgin version can be made by substituting the alcohol with a variety of fruit juices, using apple and pear juice as a base.

Red, White & Blue Pina Colada Ingredients (Individual size):

Suitably Patriotic Sangria

• 3 oz pineapple juice

Ingredients:

• 1 oz coconut cream

• 2 Bottles of white wine (dry or sweet to your taste)

• 1 oz white rum

• ¼ cup lemon juice

• Crushed ice

• ¼ cup lime juice

• ¼ oz of grenadine

• ½ cup flavored vodka (berry or whipped cream works well)

• ¼ oz of blue curacao

• ¼ cup sugar

Fill the bottom of your glass with the blue curacao. Add the first four ingredients to a blender and blend until mostly smooth. Pour almost all of the pina colada mix into the glass, on top of the blue curacao. Add the grenadine to the top and finish off with the final spoonful of pina colada mixture. Garnish with a

maraschino cherry and pineapple slice for additional style. For a virgin version, don’t add the rum and replace the blue curacao with blueberries or food coloring.

Stars & Stripes Shirley Temple Ingredients (Party or individual size): • Ginger ale • Grenadine • Vodka • Maraschino cherries • Blueberries • Whipped cream Fill your vessel of choice, either an individual cup, a party pitcher or a punch bowl, with the ginger ale. Pour the grenadine into the container until the drink is a nice red color, using more or less depending on taste. If you are using alcohol in this drink, put in your vodka and stir the mixture. Add in a suitable amount of blueberries and ice. If using individual serving sizes, garnish with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. For party sizes, leave out a bowl of the cherries and a can of whipped cream for guests to add on their own. With these three, versatile drinks, your party will be ready for adults, children and designated drivers. Variety makes a party livelier and these three options means that there will be something for everyone. With minimal effort for maximum effect, make your 4th of July party pop with these red, white and blue drinks. Ee

How to Make Quick Yogurt Desserts Sometimes it can be hard to turn down dessert when you go to a restaurant or a party. Unfortunately, the calories and fat from those little indulgences can really add up over time. One way to enjoy a sweet treat while still staying on course with your healthy eating plan is to substitute yogurt for those less healthy treats. Here are some ways to make quick yogurt desserts that’ll leave you satisfied and guilt-free:

Quick yogurt desserts: Nuts and honey One of the fastest ways to get your dessert fix is to sprinkle your favorite nuts and a spoonful of fresh honey into low-fat, unsweetened plain yogurt. If you want to avoid the carbohydrates in the honey, substitute a sugar-free maple syrup instead. This can be a quick and satisfying treat after a meal or a fast midday snack. With this sweet treat you’ll be getting healthy doses of probiotics, calcium, and protein without unnecessary calories and fat.

Quick yogurt desserts: Yogurt cream sandwiches Choose a low-fat and, preferably, sugar free cookie from your grocery store. Graham crackers work well for this although you can use any type of cookie you’d like. While you’re there, pick up a container of low-fat, sugar free frozen yogurt in vanilla. Place a scoop of frozen yogurt between the two cookies and freeze. Once frozen, you’ll have a healthy substitute for an ice cream sandwich. These make great summertime treats for kids and friends with a sweet tooth.

Quick yogurt desserts: Yogurt smoothies With the right ingredients, a yogurt smoothie can serve as a healthy meal substitute. Start with the fresh fruits of your choice. Freeze the fruits to give added texture and consistency to your smoothie. Add plain, low-fat yogurt and skim milk and place it into the barrel of your blender. To make a yogurt smoothie into a meal, add a scoop of whey protein powder. Add ice and blend until smooth. Next time you’re at the grocery store, stock up on low-fat plain yogurt and keep it handy when you need something sweet in a hurry! Ee

The perfect gift for your little ballerina! Quick yogurt desserts: Modified yogurt sundae This is another quick and healthy yogurt treat for those moments when you need something sweet. Peel half of a banana, cut it into slices and place it in a bowl. Spoon on plain, low-fat and slivered, roasted almonds. Add a touch of sugar-free chocolate syrup and sprinkle with cinnamon. Healthy never tasted so good.

Quick yogurt desserts: Yogurt pudding For a quick, fat-free pudding, add a container of yogurt to a package of Jello fat-free pudding mix in the flavor of your choice. Blend the two ingredients together in your blender. Add the fruit of your choice and blend again until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Top with a little fat-free whipped cream or topping. Should I Pay Cash For My Retirement Home? An Essential Question You’ve worked your whole life; you’ve saved for it, and now its time to buy your retirement home in the mountains of North Carolina. You’re selling your current home and considering paying cash for your retirement home. Coming here for the beauty and lifestyle…is a Great Move! Paying Cash…may not be the Right Move. Before you spend your equity, which has taken decades to accumulate to pay cash for your new home, stop to answer this essential question: Why would you pay cash for your retirement home…WHY? Because you can, is not a good answer. Because you don’t want a mortgage, is not a complete answer. People pay cash, so they won’t carry a mortgage payment

Page 20

into retirement. It’s optimal not to carry a house payment into retirement. However, that does not mean you should pay cash for your retirement home. HECM For Purchase

Smarter than paying cash, utilize a unique mortgage, developed by the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and insured through the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), known as a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM). Pronounced “Heck-Em”, this newly revised type of Reverse Mortgage, is specifically for the 62+ age group to enhance income planning and housing choices in retirement. The HECM for Purchase(H4P) is for primary residences and never requires a mortgage payment. This loan allows you to put down a portion of the price of the home, which is determined by the age of the youngest borrower, and you keep the rest in cash.

50 + Living | July 2018

With a H4P :

To qualify you must:

You hold title as owner of the property,

Be at least 62 years of age,

Because it’s FHA insured, you can never owe more than the home is worth,

Make a 40%-60% down payment,

You are never required to make a Mortgage Payment! Retirement experts hail the H4P as a smart and prudent alternative to tying up your cash in home equity. As Wade Pfau, Ph.D. CFA and Professor of Retirement Income, at the American College of Financial Services says; “The HECM for Purchase program allows for fewer distribution needs from the investment portfolio, because a greater portion of the home’s cost can be financed by the reverse mortgage”.

Qualifying for a HECM HUD has made significant enhancements to the program to document a person’s ability to sustain the home and ensure a surviving spouse can live in the home forever. Once the last remaining borrower leaves the home permanently, the estate controls ownership, retains the equity and has up to one year to settle the balance.

Pay property taxes and homeowner’s insurance, Live in and maintain the home as your primary residence.

Cash vs Equity Cash is king. Throughout retirement cash is far more valuable than equity. Income planning requires thoughtful allocation of all your assets. Running out of cash in your later years is an issue you must confront now, as you consider paying cash for your retirement home. Think this through carefully. Consider a HECM for Purchase, to preserve your cash and extend your precious assets. …because you have much more living to do! Intense Pulsed Light for Successfully Treating Rosacea Written by Candice Pardue

Intense pulsed light (a.k.a. IPL) is becoming more popular each year as new and improved techniques are being developed to maximize each patient’s experience. IPL is what’s commonly used in laser hair removal, but it has other wonderful benefits. What many people don’t realize is that intense pulsed light can also be utilized to treat skin conditions such as rosacea. Those who suffer from this condition now find relief through the techniques typically used in laser hair removal.

What is Rosacea? Rosacea is an acne-like condition which causes extreme flushing of the face. The cheeks often become red or rosy and pimples may appear at times. Rosacea is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the face that are triggered by either internal or external sources such as exposure to heat or sunlight, certain types of foods, and caffeine. Although the condition differs from one person to another, the general symptoms are a tendency to flush easily in the face, ears or even your chest and back. Burning and inflammation may occur as well. There are no blackheads with the pimple-like bumps that may appear even though rosacea is considered a type of acne. Page 22

50 + Living | July 2018

Rosacea can often be treated with acne pills or creams, however, when the condition persists despite these types of treatment, intense pulsed light can be the next treatment step.

Who Suffers from Rosacea? Rosacea most often occurs in fair-skinned Caucasians who have an ivory or porcelain skin color. Although the condition may not be identified during younger years, it can worsen as the individual becomes exposed to sun, heat and other triggering elements, thus, causing the condition to become more obvious as the person ages.

How does IPL Treat Rosacea? Although not a complete cure, IPL has been clinically proven to reduce rosacea side effects. During the light therapy, multiple wavelengths of light are used to treat the dilated blood vessels of the face. The light penetrates the skin and blood absorbs the light within the vessels of the targeted area. The light’s heat ultimately destroys the work of the blood vessel and the vessel eventually becomes nonexistent. The targeted area is reduced of flushing and redness once the blood vessels become inactive.

2.

Cleanse your skin each day using a natural acne treatment cleanser.

3.

Use clinically tested skin creams designed specifically to help the rosacea condition.

4.

If the symptoms persist or worsen, see a specialist to determine if intense pulsed light is an option.

Each person is different and will require individual counseling with a laser hair removal specialist to determine the best avenue and frequency of treatments. The good news is that IPL therapy opens wide the door of opportunity for treating difficult conditions such as rosacea. Ee

What to Expect During Your Treatment Just like with typical laser hair removal procedures, you can expect your rosacea IPL treatment to last approximately fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on how large of an area is being treated. It is highly recommended that you repeat the therapy every six weeks for initial success, and then once per year for treatment of new blood vessels.

Tips for Reducing Rosacea Symptoms 1. Wear sunscreen if you’re going to be exposed to sunlight any length of time. Exposure to sunlight and heat is a major trigger of rosacea and should be avoided if possible. July 2018 | 50 + Living

An electric toothbrush is an incredibly useful dental tool that will help your teeth to stay healthy and clean. However, these innovative brushes don’t simply do the work for you. When you upgrade to an electric brush, you’ll still need to use a proper brushing technique and take considerations to maximize your oral health. By following a few simple tips, you’ll get the best possible results from your electric toothbrush.

Take Time to Practice

Suite B-2, 1944 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803

(828) 684-3839

An electric toothbrush is a very different experience than using a traditional brush.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

An electric toothbrush is a very different experience than using a traditional brush. For some people, the vibrations leave them feeling disoriented. 50 + Living | July 2018

It may take some time to get used to your new brush, so take as many practice runs as needed before you switch over to using this brush full-time. You should also practice your new brushing technique, as you’ll no longer need to vigorously brush in the back-and-forth motion of traditional brushing.

Be Careful with the Toothpaste There are a few important toothpaste considerations when using an electric toothbrush. First, be sure to only use a peasized amount of paste, as too much toothpaste can damage your teeth. Secondly, don’t turn the toothbrush on until you place it in your mouth. Otherwise, the moving bristles are liable to shoot toothpaste across your bathroom.

Tackle Brushing in Zones To ensure that all of your teeth are brushed adequately, it may be helpful to divide your mouth into four zones: left, right, bottom, and top. By focusing on brushing one quadrant of your mouth at a time, you’ll ensure that all surfaces of the teeth receive equal attention. Begin wherever it feels the most natural, but take care to brush each surface in the zone, including your tongue, gums, and the roof of your mouth.

Maintain the Proper Brush Angle Just because you’re using an electric toothbrush with spinning bristles doesn’t mean the angle isn’t important. Be sure to hold your brush at a 45-degree angle. This will help the bristles to clean the gum line, which often contains stubborn plaque and food debris. Then, use a rolling motion to move from the outside of the teeth to the inner surfaces. In addition to the gum line, pay close attention to the chewing surfaces of the teeth to dislodge any stubborn food or bacteria.

Set the Timer You’ll want to spend two minutes brushing your teeth during each session, and your electric toothbrush will make it easy to keep track of the time. Most brushes include builtin timers, allowing you to thoroughly brush without setting a stopwatch or looking at the clock. Instead, you can focus on your technique and brushing each quadrant of your mouth. An electric toothbrush is a great addition to any oral hygiene routine. With proper use, you can count on improved dental health and a more pleasant brushing experience. Ee

Five Meat Grilling Tips That Will Make Your Next Cookout Sizzle Grilling the perfect steak is as much a badge of honor as it is a flavorful summer meal. However, many backyard grillers end up with dry, chewy meat caused by high temperatures and improper technique. If you want to polish your skills as a meat master, start by learning these grilling basics that will make your next cookout legendary.

Room Temperature Rules Taking the meat straight from the refrigerator to the grill is convenient, but it also has some drawbacks. First, the steak takes a lot longer to cook because it has to warm up once you place it on the grill. Secondly, cold meat is firm and doesn’t absorb marinades, sauces or seasoning very well. Aim to leave the steak out for 15 to 20 minutes before you toss it on the grill. Don’t leave it out any longer to prevent harmful bacteria from starting to grow. Page 26

Season Early Properly seasoning the meat before placing it on the grill is the key to getting fantastic flavor. Many people make the mistake of applying seasoning right before placing the meat on the grill. This doesn’t give the seasoning time to soak in and most of it ends up on the grates. Instead, apply salt, pepper and spices at least 15 minutes before placing the meat on the grill.

Get it Hot If you’re using a gas grill, make sure that you have plenty of propane gas and fire it up at least 10 minutes before you plan to cook the meat. Charcoal grills take a little more work and need at least 20 to 30 minutes to heat up before grilling. 50 + Living | July 2018

Hands Off Once you place the meat on the grill, step away and put the tongs down. Do not flip the meat until it cooks halfway through. Check this by looking at the side of the meat and determining how much pink color remains. Once the meat cooks halfway through, flip it over once. Constantly flipping the meat dries it out and creates uneven cooking.

50+Living “A lifestyle publication for people 50 and over”

Let it Rest Once the meat cooks fully, move it from the grill to a plate and set the plate in a warm location. Leave it alone for approximately five minutes to allow the internal juices to redistribute throughout the meat. If you slice into the meat without letting it rest, the juice will spill out onto the plate, resulting in a dry consistency. Ee July 2018 | 50 + Living
