Four Reasons Why You Should Hire an Accountant to Prepare Your Taxes Filing a tax return is a responsibility that all wage earners share. Today, more people than ever before file their taxes using online software or traditional tax forms. While filing taxes on your own may be more affordable, there are several reasons why you should still consider going to an accountant to have your taxes filed at the end of the year.

1) Knowledge of Tax Code The main reason you should hire an accountant to file your taxes is that the account has an incredible knowledge of the current tax code. The tax code in the United States is continually changing with additions and subtractions taken place every year. That means that you may suddenly qualify for a deduction or credit that you did not qualify for or know about previously. If you do qualify for a deduction or other tax benefit, it could end up saving you hundreds or even thousands of dollars off of your annual tax bill. March 2018 | 50 + Living

2) Tax Planning Another advantage of working with an account when you are filing your taxes is that they can help your tax plan for the future. In any given year, there are many different financial decisions that you could make that can have an impact on your tax situation for years to come. The accountant will be able to work with you to better understand your projected sources of income and other tax situations to determine when you should make specific financial moves. That could end up saving you a considerable amount over time.

3) Accuracy When you hire an accountant to help you prepare and file your taxes, you’ll know that he or she will fill out the forms accurately. While the process may seem straightforward for some people, others with more complex tax situations continued on page 7 Page 5

will find that filing taxes suddenly becomes complicated. To ensure that your tax forms are filled out correctly, it would be beneficial to hire an accountant who will be able to fill out all of the different forms accurately to ensure you are paying the correct amount of taxes. That can help you avoid penalties or fees in the future if you are found to have underpaid at some point.

4) Time Finally, filling out your taxes on an annual basis can be a time-consuming process. If you do not have a lot of spare time to spend on your tax preparation, it could be beneficial to have your accountant do it for you. Your accountant will then be able to provide you with your completed tax forms and have a simple short conversation discussing your tax liability and any other issues. Filing taxes on an annual basis is a requirement that all people share. When you are getting ready to prepare and file your taxes, you should consider hiring an accountant instead. There are four important reasons why an accountant may be a better option for you. Ee

5 Ways to Jump-start Your Heart Health (BPT) - If you’re looking to improve your heart health, each day is all about making a choice that moves you in the right direction. You’d rather stay in with a big bowl of ice cream. But maybe today, you could click off the TV set and take a walk with a friend. It’s easy to see why heart health is a pressing concern. One in three adults live with one or more types of cardiovascular disease, according a review published in the journal Circulation. Over time, changes in the heart and blood vessels can lead to a host of devastating problems, including heart attack, heart failure and stroke. On top of that, lifestyle factors, such as poor diet and a lack of physical activity, lead to one in five deaths in the U.S., according to a study published in 2011 in the Journal of Public Health. The good news is as the weeks and months pass, these healthy choices do pay off and make meaningful shifts in your health profile. Turning these choices into habits is well worth the time and effort. Choice by choice, you could see big improvements.

1. Reach for whole foods Diets abound, but the classic Mediterranean-based diet always comes up as a winner for heart health. It’s simple to follow because it’s made up of whole, healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, olive oil and fish. In 2013, a study in Page 8

the New England Journal of Medicine said switching to a Mediterranean diet can prevent 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and heart disease deaths in high-risk people.

2. Get up and move more often The Surgeon General says 2.5 hours of moderate intensity exercise each week promotes good heart health. To get started, visit your doctor to find out what is safe for you. Then work activities you enjoy into your routine, whether it’s a walk in the woods, a leisurely bike ride or swimming laps at the community pool.

3. Seek the company of others This may not come up at the doctor’s office, but the time we spend with friends and family does reward us with better heart health. Isolation is linked to depression and that’s linked to higher rates of heart disease. Pick up the phone and call someone. Schedule lunch with an old friend, plan a special day with younger relatives or sign up for an activity.

4. De-stress and decompress If you constantly feel the effects of stress in your body, it may be time to take steps to reverse that. Scientists haven’t found definitive proof, but they believe stress could trigger inflammation, a precursor to heart disease. So go ahead, and seek some joy: Laughter releases “good” HDL cholesterol. Exercise is also a proven stress buster, and studies show a mindfulness mediation practice reduces blood pressure. 50 + Living | March 2018

DOWNSIZING? MOVING? RELOCATING? HANDLING AN ESTATE? 5. Know your risks Hopefully, you’re already making those annual doctor visits because your blood sugar, blood pressure, weight and cholesterol can all tell us something about our heart health. But what you really want to know is whether there is fatty buildup in your arteries, because toocan lead to stroke, peripheral vascular disease and carotid artery stenosis. Doctor office tests offer indicators and warning signs, but they don’t tell you how much you’re blocked. Luckily, there’s a safe and affordable test that gives you the hard data on what is happening inside your body: vascular screening. If you think learning the truth will discourage you, one study indicates the opposite may be true. The report published in the Journal of Community Medicine and Health Education says people who had vascular screening reported more positive changes to their health several months after their vascular screening than the control subjects who weren’t screened. For example, 61 percent of screened respondents said they ate healthier foods since the screening, versus the 46 percent who were not screened. Truth is empowering and it can give people a powerful incentive to change, even if the news isn’t what you’re hoping to hear. To get your own vascular test, find out when Life Line Screening is coming to your community. You’ll get a results pack you can take to your doctor, so you can work on a plan together to improve your health. 12 Easy and Delicious Ways to Eat Blueberries By CJ Myers

Many people love blueberries, and for good reason. The colorful berries, dripping with flavor and stain-your-lips juiciness, have a mouthwatering balance of sweetness and tart, plus they’re chock full of valuable nutrients. Blueberries are packed with powerful antioxidants that help your immune system fight colds, infections, and even reduce the risk of some forms of cancer. They’re also full Vitamin C, which boosts your immunite system and helps repair skin damage, and they offer a healthy dose of fiber and vital nutrients like magnesium, iron, and potassium. Multiple studies have connected eating blueberries to reduced risk of heart disease, as well as diminished effects of dementia in older adults. When you add in the fact that a cup of the blueberries contain just eighty calories, there’s plenty of reason to enjoy the colorful fruit as often as you can. But as heal thy and tasty as they may be, it’s easy to get tired of the typical pancake, muffin, and breakfast parfait recipes blueberries usually find their way into. Fortunately, these versatile berries have plenty of other tasty uses. So, if you have a package in the fridge or are just looking for new ways of adding the healthy fruit into your diet, here are twelve easy ways to eat (and drink) blueberries. Page 12

Add a Sweet Addition to Salads They’re not just for fruit salads. Add blueberries to your favorite green salads for a touch of extra flavor. You’ll enjoy the additional sweetness and tartness, plus the extra color.

Combine Booze and Blueberries for Maximum Enjoyment To make a snappy blueberry cordial, bring one cup of blueberries and half cup of sugar to simmer in a sauce pan. Once they have thickened, run them through a mesh strainer, pour the liquid into glasses, and top them off with ice and vodka. Or, make a blueberry martini by combining two ounces of fresh blueberry juice, one ounce fresh mango juice, one and half ounces vodka, and half ounce orange liqueur into a martini-shaker filled with ice. Skewer several fresh blueberries on cocktail picks for garnish and enjoy the berry-flavored delight.

Ditch the Jelly for PB&J Leave the jams and jellies on the shelf and use fresh blueberries in their place for a healthy, great-tasting PB&J sandwich. 50 + Living | March 2018

Dress up Salads with Blueberry Vinaigrette

Make Blueberry Popsicles

Toss some blueberries, olive oil, and vinegar with some salt and pepper into a blender for a fantastic vinaigrette that brings any salad to life.

Blend blueberries into a puree, and if you desire, add other fruits and a bit of sugar. Pour the puree into popsicle molds and pop them into the freezer for cold and fruity treats that are sure to please. If they’re destined for adults, try spiking the puree with tequila or rum for extra fun.

Enjoy a Sweet, Cool Snack Roll blueberries in sugar or your preferred sugar substitute, place them on a tray, and pop it into the freezer. What results is a tasty cold treat coated in sweetness.

Smother Pancakes with Sweet & Sticky Blueberry Syrup If blueberries in pancakes aren’t enough, try this easyto-make syrup. Mix together a cup and half of blueberries with a half-cup of maple syrup in a sauce pan, and let them bubble for several minutes.

Enjoy Fresh Blueberry Juice Blueberry juice is a healthy treat for kids and adults alike. To make it, put two and half cups of blueberries, two cups of water, and one tablespoon of sugar into a medium-sized pot. Mash the blueberries with a potato masher and let them simmer for ten minutes. Then, place a mesh strainer over a large bowl and pour the liquid through. Press the blueberry pulp with a spoon to ensure all the juices are released. The juice is great to drink on its own or to use in recipes, while the leftover pulp is a great addition to fruit smoothies.

Make a Delicious Cake Topping Who needs icing? This sweet topping is delicious poured over all varieties of cake whether they’re frosted or not. Wash two cups of blueberries, then put them in a sauce pan with a third of a cup of sugar, half a teaspoon of vanilla, some lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Let the sauce boil for about one minute while stirring and let it cool before enjoying sweet, blueberry richness. It’s also delicious served over ice cream and pudding. For a healthier treat, pour the topping over unflavored Greek yogurt.

Make a Tasty Blueberry Spread Mix together blueberries, scallions or onions, and mayonnaise, for a great a blueberry spread. Enjoy with crackers, or use it to liven up sandwiches and rollups. March 2018 | 50 + Living

Spice Things up with Blueberry Salsa You can easily transform your favorite berries into a sweet, spicy salsa that’s a guaranteed party-pleaser. Combine in a food processor or blender: blueberries, a jalapeno, diced red onion, fresh cilantro, olive oil, half a bell pepper, lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Pulse until everything is chopped, then season with salt and pepper to taste.

Whip up an Easy Dessert Plop a dollop of whipped cream over fresh blueberries for a quick dessert that’s lightly sweet and packed with summertime flavor. If you’re feeling more adventurous, swap out the whipped cream for sayabon, an Italian, booze-infused whipped dessert. To make it, place a bowl over a pot of simmering water on the stove, and mix in four egg yolks, a third of a cup of Marsala wine, a quarter cup of sugar, half a cup of heavy cream, and lemon juice. Using a thermometer, stir the mixture until it’s 155 degrees and thick. Let it cool, then pour over the blueberries in a champagne glass and enjoy. For a different-tasting, nonalcoholic variant, use espresso instead of wine. Ee Page 13

shelter frustrating and lonely. Adopting an older pet reduces this unhappiness, and is a powerful act of kindness.

Fully Developed Personality

Why Adopt an Older Pet? 7 Reasons It’s an Excellent Idea Puppies and kittens may be irresistibly cute and cuddly, but there’s a huge amount to be said for adopting an older pet rather than taking on a juvenile. After all, millions of fully grown animals are placed in shelters across the country every year, and giving one a home could literally be a lifesaver. Here are seven excellent reasons to seriously consider visiting a local shelter if you’re looking for a new animal companion.

Vaccination and Medical History Most senior pets will already have had all their necessary vaccinations, and will also usually have a medical history of some sort that you can check for problems. It may seem counter-intuitive, but an older pet can often cost much less in vets’ fees than a younger one.

Older animals will also have developed their final personalities to a large degree. A reputable shelter will be able to match you with an animal whose temperament matches your lifestyle, rather than gambling on how a younger pet will mature.

No Physical Surprises Especially with cross-bred dogs, it can be very difficult to predict the animal’s final size and other physical characteristics when looking at a juvenile. When you adopt a senior pet, what you see is what you get - there are no future surprises in store.

Happier Pets Although it’s always risky to assign human attributes to animals, many people who take on older pets report that the animals seem to be genuinely grateful for their second chance in life. Adopting a senior pet usually leads to increased happiness for all concerned, and you’ll feel good about yourself for making a difference! There’s no denying that fluffy, cuddly young pets have immense charm, but the advantages of adopting an older pet are ample. If you’re looking for a new companion, shouldn’t you consider visiting a shelter in your area? Ee

Training Issues An older pet will already have had basic training, whether it’s in obedience or toilet habits, and will usually have had bad behaviors schooled out of them. This familiarity with training will also mean they’re more adaptable than some younger, more excitable pets, making them fit more easily into their new life with you.

Calmer Behavior Senior pets have usually gotten their days of wild energy out of their system, and will be a calmer and more predictable presence in your home. This is especially important if there are children around, who may be accidentally harmed when playing with a boisterous and inexperienced juvenile animal.

Socialized Characters An animal who has already spent much of its life in a family setting will have become socialized, and will find living in a March 2018 | 50 + Living

4 DIY Body Scrubs for Soft, Smooth Skin

A good body scrub is a real treat for the senses. Its ingredients impart benefits for your skin while the abrasive particles gently slough off dead cells to reveal a softer, smoother you. And if it smells good, too, you can indulge in an aromatherapy session at the same time! There are a plethora of body scrubs to choose from in the stores, but why not make your own? Not only do you get to control what goes in them, but you’ll also save money because you probably already own the base ingredients. It only takes two things to make a simple scrub: an abrasive and oil. Here are a few examples of each: • Common abrasives -- sugar, table salt, Epsom salts, ground coffee • Common oils -- coconut oil, grape seed oil, safflower oil Page 16

Olive oil is good for your skin but isn’t often added to scrubs because it has a strong scent. Plus, olive oil can be expensive. When it comes to abrasives, remember that the goal is to exfoliate gently, not irritate or injure your skin. Stick to fine particles rather than chunky ones. Once you master a combination that you like, you can start experimenting with new scrubs by adding one or two fresh ingredients, like honey, mashed banana or grated carrots. Before you begin, you should invest in a few jars to hold your scrubs. Old jelly jars with screw-down lids or ceramic jars with cork lids that latch down are good choices. 50 + Living | March 2018

1) Honey Lemon Sugar Scrub You’ll need these ingredients: • 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted • 1 cup granulated sugar (you can use brown sugar, too) • 1 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice • 2 Tbsp organic honey Warm coconut oil over low heat. Once liquefied, remove from the heat. Add remaining ingredients and stir until thoroughly combined. Transfer to a container with a top that seals. When it cools down, the coconut oil will return to a semi-solid state, but that’s fine. As soon as it comes into contact with your warm hands and skin, it will liquify again. Try different types of acids as you create new batches, such as grapefruit or orange juice.

2) Lavender and Sea Salt Scrub You’ll need: • 1 cup fine sea salt • 1 cup coarse sea salt • 1/2 cup sweet almond oil • A few drops of lavender essential oil • One or two pinches of dried lavender

Mix thoroughly and store. This scrub smells good enough to eat, but it isn’t just a gimmick. The caffeine in the coffee will brighten your skin while the cocoa is bursting with antioxidants. Experiment with adding a few drops of essential oils for an aromatherapy experience like no other. Orange and raspberry are particularly good with this scrub.

4) Oatmeal Honey Scrub Necessary ingredients are: • 1 cup of uncooked oats • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/2 cup grapeseed oil • 1/4 cup honey Grind the oats until reduced to a nubby powder. Mix in the remaining ingredients and store. Oatmeal is an excellent choice if your skin is feeling sensitive and in need of pampering. The honey is also soothing as well as moisturizing.

Enjoy making your do-it-yourself body scrubs. As you become comfortable with making them, you’ll probably want to experiment with everything in your kitchen! Ee

Mix thoroughly and spoon into your prepared jar. This scrub not only works great but it looks beautiful and smells divine. Look for dried lavender at your local organic foods market. If you don’t feel like investing in two different grains of sea salt, stick with whichever one you prefer. The mixture is helpful but not necessary.

3) Mocha Coffee Scrub For this scrub, gather together: • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 cup finely ground coffee • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa March 2018 | 50 + Living

Debunking the ‘Seasonal’ Allergy Myth and Reducing Exposure Year-round

(BPT) - Seasonal allergens are a popular scapegoat for a multitude of reactions: sniffling, sneezing and itchy eyes. During the summer months, pollen - one of the most common allergens - is floating around, even visibly so in some places. Researchers approximate that some 50 million in the U.S. alone believe themselves to be victims of seasonal allergies, and spring to be the season that most affects them.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to reduce your exposure to allergens, including some pretty unique ones, like washing your hair before bed! But the majority of effective measures focus on the circulation and quality of the air around you. While we can’t do much in the short term to improve the quality of the air outside, the most powerful means of tackling our exposure to allergens comes from

But the idea that we’re more exposed to allergens during one time of year verResearchers approximate that some 50 million in sus another is something of a myth, as the U.S. alone believe themselves to be victims the most common allergens are actually found indoors. Pollen is indeed lowest in of seasonal allergies, and spring to be the wintertime, and this is especially true in season that most affects them. colder climates. But we’re exposed to allergens throughout the year, mainly because many of the most common allergens are actually related to addressing the air inside, which is up to five times more indoor villains like dust mites, animal dander and mold. polluted than the air outside. Page 18

50 + Living | March 2018

To reduce your allergen exposure throughout the year, consider the following steps: Not all filters are created equally. The “filter triangle”, the amount of air flow a filter allows and how well it traps particles, must be in balance if the device is to do its job properly. If the filter blocks air flow, that will cause problems, as will one that doesn’t catch enough particles. A high efficiency particulate filter will improve the clean air delivery rate, or the amount of air (in cubic feet) stripped of all particles of a given size per minute. Make sure this measurement matches up with the size of the room, and of course take care to switch out filters in your furnace and air conditioning units as often as possible. Adjust the humidity level indoors, ideally to less than 50 percent, via a humidifier. Dust mites and mold are the most common allergens indoors, and both thrive in humid environments. Dust mites eat the dead skin cells that we

shed, and when the environment is damp, those softened skin cells provide a feast. To reduce dust mites, and the conditions in which they’re most comfortable, it is important to keep humidity levels below 50 percent, according to the AAAAI. The good news is that once an effective humidifier is up and running, most dust mite populations will disappear within a few days. Purchase an air purifier. Air purifiers help improve the quality of air flow in the rooms of your home by filtering out pollutants, allergens and irritants like cigarette smoke. A purifier like the Atmosphere Sky Air Treatment System, which uses state-of-the-art technology to effectively remove 99.99 percent of particles as small as 0.007 microns as they pass through the unit, lessens exposure to these pollutants, allergens and irritants. Consider your car. Allergens can enter through your car windows and sunroof, so roll everything up and set the vent setting to recirculate as often as possible. Allergens can also accumulate in your car’s air filters over time, so be sure to have them switched out frequently. Vacuum the seats and any other upholstered surface regularly, as dust mites can settle into the fabric. Be sure to clean up any spills quickly and thoroughly to prevent the accumulation of mold as well. While it’s nearly impossible to completely rid the environment of pollutants, allergens and irritants, taking proactive, preventative measures can significantly reduce your exposure to common culprits like dust mites, pet dander and mold. Arm yourself with quality filters, the Atmosphere Sky Air Treatment System and a clean car to reduce your exposure to allergens yearround. After all, quality of air is quality of life. Ee

Spring Without the Wings: 5 Tips to Avoid a Seasonal Pest Problem

(BPT) - Daydreaming of spring is something everyone does during the coldest days of winter — even pests. The promise of warmer weather on the horizon is also a boon for the numerous species of pests that inhabit your area, and when the temperature perks up, many of those pests come out of hiding and start looking towards your home for food and shelter. Protecting your home and property from seasonal intruders is a yearlong job, but your task could be simpler if proper preparations are made in advance of spring’s first bloom. To help you do just that, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) offers these tips for keeping your property pest-free this year: Page 20

* Identify the threats. To start your pest prevention effectively, the first step is to know what to look for. The winter months saw an influx of furry critters trying to invade homes, but springtime pests are more often of the six-legged variety. Ants, flies, bees/ hornets, ticks, mosquitoes and termites are all common nuisance pests during this season. Visit www. pestworld.org to learn more about what threats are most common in your area and how to identify them. * Block the openings. Even the smallest pests are able to find a way into your home, and in many cases that way is through your windows. Keep windows shut during swarming periods for insects like ants or termites and install screens and door sweeps to keep winged intruders, like flies, mosquitoes and hornets, out. 50 + Living | March 2018

* Make your yard less inviting. Don’t allow your yard to be a base of operations for future pest activity. Keeping your grass freshly cut makes the space less appealing to pests, and trimming trees and bushes near your home is a great way to prevent easy access for potential travelers. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, you should also remove standing water from your property. Even an upside-down Frisbee can collect enough water to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Fill wet patches with dirt, if necessary, and tip over any cups, flower pots or bowls that collected water during the winter. * Look for signs of activity. A pest infestation can’t stay hidden forever. Alive or dead insects in your home are a sign of a larger problem, as is damage to wood if you live in an area where termites are prevalent. Signs of a potential problem may exist outside, as well. Take a stroll around your home and check your roof for hornet nests. They will be small in the spring but will grow larger throughout the season if action isn’t taken. * Contact the experts. If you’re looking for even more strategies to reduce the risk of pests infesting your home or you suspect your home has already succumbed to an infestation of some type, your local pest control professional can help you rid your home of existing threats and shore it up to prevent against new invaders. Visit www. pestworld.org to find a local exterminator in your area. It’s the easiest way to turn your spring pest problem from growing to gone. Ee

7 Tips for Managing Diabetes Photo courtesy of Getty Images

(Family Features) Staying healthy can be a challenge, especially for those living with diabetes. Everyone can have conflicts finding the right balance of partaking in healthy habits, such as exercise, eating well and even keeping your teeth and gums clean. From stress to self-care, life can be up and down when you’re living with diabetes. These seven tips from Dr. Natalie Strand, the winner of season 17 of “The Amazing Race” who lives with diabetes herself, can help you stay healthy and lead a balanced life while managing your diabetes. Communicate with your care team. Make sure you connect with your nurse educator, endocrinologist and dietician. Reach out to them with your questions as they can often help you implement subtle changes to avoid completely overhauling your lifestyle and routine because of diabetes. Get involved. Get a local group together to fundraise, vent or just understand each other. Groups such as Diabetes Sisters, JDRF, TuDiabetes and BeyondType1 offer ways to Page 22

connect with others living with diabetes in person or on social media. Connecting with the diabetes community can be a powerful way to help ease the burden of living with diabetes. Keep doing what you love. Just because you have diabetes doesn’t mean you have to give up doing what you love. Make efforts to continue sports, travel and other hobbies, even if there is a learning curve to adapting with diabetes at first. Maintain good oral health. People living with diabetes are two times more likely to develop gum disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Colgate Total toothpaste is FDA-approved to help reverse and prevent gingivitis, an early form of gum disease. Get into a routine. Find a routine that works and stick with it. This way you don’t have to make new decisions each day. Anything that can ease the mental burden of diabetes can help. For example, pick a time each year for your annual visits: eye doctor, endocrinologist, renew prescriptions, etc. 50 + Living | March 2018

Picking the same time of year every year can help ensure you don’t forget to take care of yourself. Make self-care a priority. It can be hard to keep diabetes care in the forefront. It can be boring, exhausting and also fade into the background. Remind yourself that one of the best things you can do for yourself, and for your loved ones, is stay healthy. Use your family as motivation to exercise daily, eat better-for-you foods and maintain a healthy weight. Manage stress. Diabetes can be a big stressor. Add jobs, kids, relationships and it can become overwhelming. Find an easy and effective tool for stress relief and do it often. Even 5-10 minutes of guided meditation daily can have a big impact on stress management. Ee For more information and ways to lead a balanced life with diabetes, visit OralHealthandDiabetes.com.

6 Steps to a Perfect Lawn to Be Proud Of A beautiful lawn is an asset to any garden, but it’s often one of the first casualties of a lack of time. If you don’t pay it enough attention, it can quickly become overgrown, ugly, and out of control. However, the good news is that keeping on top of your lawn’s maintenance will keep the overall amount of work needed to a minimum; little and often is the key once a lawn is healthy and established. These six tips will set your lawn on the road to great condition, helping it to look after itself and form the basis of a yard to be proud of.

Assess What You Have to Work With There’s an old joke about a city-dweller in the country asking a farmer for directions, only to be told “Well, I wouldn’t want to start from here.” Humorous or not, this is an important point to consider when beginning your quest for the perfect lawn: should you go on from where you are or start afresh? If your current lawn is riddled with weeds and contains only coarse clumps of grass, it might be better to start again with brand-new turf rather than fighting a long and losing Page 24

battle. Your future efforts can then go toward keeping your newly laid lawn in perfect condition using the rest of these tips.

Water with Care Your local climate and situation will have a huge effect on how often you need to water your lawn. Dry, windy conditions will clearly require more frequent watering than a climate where rain is frequent. However, it’s a mistake to set up an automated sprinkler system to keep your lawn continually irrigated. Not only is this wasteful of water, which may or may not be an issue in your area, but it also lulls your grass into having high expectations. It becomes weakened and reliant on regular watering, and will soon show signs of distress if the supply dries up for even a day or two. Instead, keep a close eye on the condition of the grass, and water only when your lawn starts to look listless and lackluster. Don’t let the grass turn yellow or brown, as this usually means you’ve gone way past the point where watering was necessary, and the grass will have entered a dormant state. 50 + Living | March 2018

This method of only watering when necessary relies on giving your grass a generous drink each time; aim for around an inch of water per session. For best results, water early in the day to give the surface moisture time to evaporate, as damp grass overnight can lead to a buildup of mold and disease.

Frequent Mowing Mowing your lawn frequently not only keeps it looking neat and tidy, but also improves the quality of the growth. Grass is quicker to grow than most weeds, but once they get a foothold, weeds can quickly crowd out the grass. Frequent mowing will help keep the unwanted plants in check, bludgeoning them into submission over time and helping the grass maintain the upper hand. If you can’t find the time to mow regularly, there’s sure to be a local child willing to do the job for a dollar or two.

A Proper Raking Routine Clearing fallen leaves from your lawn is an essential autumn job, and not only for the sake of neatness. The uneven spread of debris over the grass can lead to patchy growth, as light and air are blocked more deeply in some places than others. Also, more frequent raking after each mowing gently loosens and aerates the surface of the soil, making new grass growth stronger and more even.

Feeding Your Lawn A good soil is the foundation of a good lawn, but not

March 2018 | 50 + Living

everyone is lucky enough to enjoy perfect earth conditions without lending a little help. Thankfully, lawn grass is fairly forgiving when it comes to nutrition. All lawns will benefit from an application of nitrogen-rich fertilizer in spring, before the main growth gets going. If your grass naturally falls dormant over winter, then this single feed will be enough. If the growth continues for most of the year, however, then another dose of fertilizer in late summer is also a good idea.

Reseeding to Repair Wear and Tear Even after all your best efforts, lawns can get patchy over time, whether this is through extreme rainfall, uneven scorching from summer sun, physical damage to the turf, or an invasion of suffocating weeds. A light sowing of standard grass seed will improve the situation, and is best done in late summer or early autumn. At this time of year, the soil will still be warm and the growth of weeds will be on the wane, allowing the sprouting seeds to get a tentative foothold before new growth starts in earnest when spring arrives. The humble lawn can be a wonderful canvas for your gardening efforts, setting off your borders and ornamental planting perfectly. While aiming for a completely flat, closemowed, bowling-green surface is perhaps best left to the professionals (or those with plenty of time on their hands), there’s no reason you can’t have a lawn to be proud of with some well-planned effort. The better your preparation, the better your grass will be able to take care of itself and stay looking perfect throughout the year. Ee

HOW YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR FICO SCORE (BPT) - Anyone who has tried to borrow money to purchase a car, buy a home or open a revolving line of credit may be familiar with the term FICO Score. Most lenders use this scoring model, which essentially determines a person’s creditworthiness.

“The FICO Score may seem like a big, daunting mystery, especially since your score can have a huge impact on your ability to borrow money at a competitive rate,” said Jim Johnston, of Colorado-based Bellco Credit Union. “The truth is, however, you do have power over your credit score, and there are things you can do to improve it over time.” How FICO Score is calculated FICO was named for the data analytics company Fair Isaac Co., which created the first credit-scoring system. In general, a credit score breaks down as follows: * *

Page 26

35 percent is your payment history — Do you pay bills on time? 30 percent is the amounts you owe (on loans, credit cards, etc.) — Owing money on different credit accounts is not necessarily bad, especially if you’re

paying your bills on time every month. FICO considers how many of your accounts have balances, if you’re using your entire credit line, and how much of any installment loan you still owe. *

15 percent is the length of your credit history — Having a long credit history is good, but even if you’re young and barely have any credit history (such as credit cards and a car loan), you can still have a high FICO score.

*

10 percent is your credit mix — What is your mix of credit, meaning credit cards, retail accounts, installment loans, mortgage loans, etc.? A good mix of credit, especially with a history of on-time payments, is helpful to your score.

*

10 percent is any new credit — If you’ve opened numerous credit accounts in a short period, this can have a negative impact. Although closing a credit account still shows up on your credit history, it has no impact on your score.

Tips to improve your score Repairing your credit takes time, so it’s important to be patient. Below are three things you can do. 1. Check your credit report — The first thing you should do is get a free copy of your credit report and make sure there are no errors. If you find an error, you have the right to dispute it with the credit bureau. 50 + Living | March 2018

2. Get organized — Don’t make any more late payments on your credit cards. The best way to do this is to get organized. Set up auto payments through your bank or credit union, or set reminders to make payments before they are due. 3. Pay down your debt — While this is no easy task, it will make a difference. Use your credit report to make a list of all your credit cards and the balances you owe. Pick the credit cards with the highest interest rates, and tackle those balances first. Most importantly, don’t add to your debt by continuing to use your credit cards.

Your FICO Score does not take into account annual income, length of employment, or other sources of financial support such as alimony or child support. However, these are things that your bank or credit union can consider when you’re borrowing money, so it’s not all about the FICO Score.

Whether you are building a new home or upgrading to a more efficient heating and cooling system. We can offer a system to best suit your needs, not to mention at a great price. The Bullman way.. Is the better way.

Knowledge is power. Understand what your FICO Score is, how a good or bad score can impact your life, and if a low FICO Score is holding you back. There’s no better time than now to begin to make positive changes to improve your score. Ee

How Do I Reduce My Risk of Colorectal Cancer? If you live in the United States, your risk of developing cancer of the colon or rectum is between four and five percent. However, certain factors increase your risk of colorectal cancer. While you can’t stop the aging process or alter your family history of cancer, you can address certain lifestyle factors linked to colorectal cancer to reduce your risk.

Choose a diet that protects your colon. Your food choices can also influence your risk of colorectal cancer. To reduce your likelihood of a colorectal tumor, current recommendations are to limit your consumption of red and processed meats, especially if you grill or fry your meat, and to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Lose excess weight. Especially if you carry extra fat around your abdomen, being overweight increases your risk of developing cancer of the colon or rectum. Â In particular, excess abdominal fat influences cancer risk to a greater extent in men. Excess fat around your stomach contributes to higher levels of insulin, a hormone linked to cancer risk, which may explain the association between abdominal obesity and colorectal cancer. Therefore, if your body mass index is raised, it is wise to take steps towards weight loss.

Stop smoking. Although smoking is most strongly linked to lung cancer, tobacco use increases your risk of cancer at various other body sites including your colon. If you currently smoke, you should try to quit with the help of smoking cessation counseling, nicotine replacement products and prescription medication designed to help you quit.

Increase your physical activity level. As regular exercise can regulate your weight and insulin levels, keeping physically active may lower your chances of developing a tumor in your colon or rectum. Taking at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly is recommended for general health and may also help to reduce your colorectal cancer risk.

Page 28

Drink alcohol in moderation. Alcohol is a carcinogen and heavy drinking can make you more susceptible to colorectal cancer. At most you should consume two alcoholic drinks daily if you are a man and one if you are a woman. Although making the five changes discussed above cannot guarantee that you will remain free from colorectal cancer, you can cut your tumor risk and gain other health benefits in the process. Ee
