10 Easy Annuals for Beginning Gardeners

You don’t need a green thumb to grow beautiful flowers in your yard or on your patio this season. Build your confidence as a gardener by starting with these annuals that are easy to plant and will give you satisfying results in a short amount of time. An annual is a plant that you must replant each season. That’s as opposed to a perennial, which will become dormant over the winter and come up again the next spring. Perennials are somewhat harder to care for than annuals, and they often require you to wait for the results of your labor. You can start annuals from seeds, or you can buy small plants at a garden store. Purchasing the plants is the way to get excellent results immediately. Here are 10 easy annuals to start your gardening adventures.

Geraniums also have a particular scent that many people enjoy. Grow geraniums in containers with good drainage. Pinch off the flowers as they begin to dry, and the plant will use its energy for more blooms and not become leggy. They like a lot of sunlight, so place them in a spot where they will get plenty of it.

Impatiens New Guinea New Guinea impatiens will tolerate more sun than their sister plants, walleriana impatiens. They have striking leaves in dark green and flowers that are pink or white. Keep them moist, and they will generate. New Guinea impatiens make excellent container plants but also look terrific when planted in large groups in a flower bed.

Begonias

Impatiens Walleriana

Begonias are pretty plants that bloom in pink, orange, red, and yellow. They are excellent in containers on your porch and will thrive in partial shade.

Walleriana impatiens have lovely, delicate flowers in pink, red, white or salmon that grow in cascades. They are perfect for hanging baskets on a porch or in a shaded area.

Make sure you plant your begonias in soil that drains well and water them consistently. Ideally, you want the ground to be moist but not dense with water. Pinch off the flowers as they dry out so new ones can grow.

Walleriana impatiens will thrive in partial shade but can become scorched in full sun. They will grow in mounds along a border that is shaded by larger plants.

Geraniums These traditional summer flowers are usually seen in a dramatic red but also come in pink. They bring clusters of small flowers that come together into a beautiful burst of color. March 2019 | 50 + Living

Marigolds Marigolds are hardy little flowers that are an excellent choice for beginners and even children. They are easy to plant in containers and look nice when displayed in groups. continued on page 5 Page 3

Enjoy Healthy Food and Great Prices at Your Local Farmers Market by beconrad If you are looking for a way to save money on produce and eat a healthier diet, the solution may be as close as your local farmers market. Farmers markets bring fresh local produce to consumers, whether they live in the city or enjoy a more rural lifestyle. No matter where you call home, there is probably a farmers market or two within easy driving distance.

Local Connections

So the next time you are feeling hungry and adventurous, get out the car keys or hop the train to the local farmers market. You just might be surprised at the great solution, excellent prices and wide variety of fresh healthy food you will find there.

Parents can use the weekly excursion to the farmers market to teach their kids about farming and where food really comes from. That local connection could be enough to convince reticent kids to eat their veggies.

Better Taste

Some Tips to Help You Get the Best Deal

One of the biggest advantages of shopping at farmers markets is the produce there tends to taste better. Supermarkets are great for staple goods, but the produce they sell is often picked before the peak of freshness.

Shopping at the local farmers market is a great way to save money and enjoy healthy food, but it is important to shop carefully. The following tips will help you make the most of your trip to the local farmers market.

This gives the shippers and suppliers more time to get their apples, peaches and watermelons to the shelves, but fresh taste is often sacrificed in the process. The growers who attend farmers markets are local, and that means they can leave their delicious fruits and vegetables in the field until they are busting with flavor.

• Buy in small quantities, at least at the beginning. Buying a smaller amount of produce helps ensure you will use it all before it goes bad.

Lower Prices Growers who frequent farmers markets often have lower overhead costs than other producers, and they can pass those savings on to their customers. Consumers can often find much lower prices at the local farmers market compared to the supermarket. Lower prices means you can buy more produce and serve more fresh fruits and vegetables to your family. You do not have to spend a fortune to enjoy a fresh, healthy and varied diet. Shopping at farmers markets can save you a lot of money. March 2019 | 50 + Living

The advantages of shopping at your local farmers market go beyond low prices and fresh flavor. This unique venue also gives consumers a chance to talk directly with the people who grow their food - something that is impossible at the grocery store.

• Try a bit from each farmer. Every farmer at the market brings their own style to the market. Sampling a bit from each provider will help you choose the best produce and get the best value. • Ask for advice on storage and preparation. One of the main advantages of shopping at a farmers market is that you get a chance to talk to the people who grow the food. Solicit their advice on storage methods and preparation - you will be glad you did. • Explore a new fruit or vegetable on every trip. You might start out with a simple basket of peaches, but some home-grown star fruit or red ripe raspberries can provide even more variety in your diet. Ee Page 7

6 SMART WAYS TO SPEND YOUR TAX REFUND by beconrad

If you are like most people, you are expecting a hefty tax refund from the IRS. With the average refund now over $3,000, there will soon be a lot of money sloshing around the economy. If you are one of those lucky taxpayers, you are probably already thinking of things to do with all that money, but you might want to take a different approach this year. You could splurge and waste your tax refund money, but this year why not make a new start? You can use your tax refund to invest in your future and enjoy a better lifestyle both now and for many years to come. Here are 6 smart ways to spend your upcoming tax windfall.

#1. Set Up a Mutual Fund Account You may not know it, but you can start a mutual fund account with as little as $1,000. Just shop around and look for a fund that charges low fees and provides a diversified portfolio you can use to build your future. Index funds are particularly good vehicles for small investors. These funds have super low expenses, and they invest in thousands of different stocks. You can further maximize the value of your tax refund by setting up an automatic investment program something you can do with as little as $50-$100 a month.

#2. Boost Your 401(k) Contribution Contributing to your 401(k) at work is one of the best ways to save for retirement, and now that you have an extra $1,000 or two you can afford to contribute even more. Talk to your human resources manager about how to boost your contribution rate and save more in the year to come. Page 8

If you are not already doing so, you should contribute at least enough to get the full company match. If not, you are literally turning down free money. You can use your tax refund to fund your additional contributions and get a head start on your retirement dreams.

#3. Start (or Add To) an IRA Depending on your age, you can invest up to $6,500 in a traditional or Roth IRA, but you do not need that much to get started. If Uncle Sam has gifted you with a $1,000 tax refund, you can turn that money around and make it work even harder for you. You can open an IRA account at a brokerage firm, mutual fund company or even at your bank. Once the money is in place, you can invest it for retirement and add to it every year you have earned income.

#4. Tune Up Your Car Tuning up your car is a great way to spend your tax refund. Not only will your ride be more reliable but you will probably use less gas as well. Clogged filters, fouled spark plugs and other common problems can significantly reduce your fuel economy and cause you to spend more than you should. Â If you cannot remember the last time your car had a tune-up, it is probably long overdue. Just allocate part of your tax refund bounty to the job and call your mechanic.

#5. Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Making your home more energy efficient is another way to spend your tax refund wisely. Replacing your traditional 50 + Living | March 2019

thermostat with a programmable one can sharply reduce your heating and cooling costs, as can sealing up leaky doors and windows and adding additional caulking around the frames. There are other ways to make your home more energy efficient, including replacing your traditional light bulbs with LED models and swapping out that decadeold fridge with a brand new model. These upgrades can reduce your energy bills and pay dividends month after month.

#6. Upgrade Your Wardrobe If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to move up the corporate ladder, why not invest part of your tax return in a better wardrobe? Investing in a top quality suit can really help your career by letting you project a more professional image at work. You do not have to spend a fortune to create a great working wardrobe. In fact, you will probably have enough left over for a few fun splurges. Getting a big fat tax refund is lots of fun, but too many people simply waste the money. The ideas listed above can help you make the most of your refund this year by turning the money from a short-term windfall into a long-term investment. Ee March 2019 | 50 + Living

Get Started with Fitness Walking Walking can be a great way to get or stay in shape. When done correctly, it exercises just about your entire body, should be low impact, combines cardio with strength and flexibility training, and gets you some fresh air and sunshine (hopefully). But like any exercise program, it does require some dedicated effort and consistency to get the desired results. You’ve seen them. People strolling down the sidewalk in full workout regalia, talking on the cell phone, maybe pulling a dog on a leash or pushing a baby stroller. This is nice. It is a pleasant diversion. It’s much better than sitting in a chair. What it is not, is exercise. For the purpose of this article, exercise must raise your heart rate and cardiovascular system for a minimum of 20 minutes. It needs to utilize and stress one or more muscle groups. And finally, it needs to be done a minimum of three times a week. If you are one of those people who likes to go out for a walk with your phone, baby, and/or dog, that’s great. You already have a start. You can skip ahead, but don’t. There is still some good information that, although addressed to the beginner, can be useful to anyone who wants to walk for fitness.? If you haven’t walked at all, you need to do the hardest part of any exercise regimen. You have to get started. Like any good program, planning is important. As stated earlier, one of the key elements to an exercise program is consistency. So the first part of your plan is to choose when you will walk. Many people like to go first thing in the morning before other obligations get in the way. Others will go out and walk during lunch to get a break and clear their minds in the middle of the day. Still others do their walk when they get Page 10

home from work as a transition between their workday and their home life. It doesn’t matter when you go, but it does matter that you go, so pick a time you can stick with. The next part of the planning concerns clothing. Depending on where you live and the season, you may need to prepare for a variety of weather conditions. You don’t want to walk if it is dangerous to do so, such as too hot, too cold, or there is lightning present. On the other hand, you don’t want to start using the weather as an excuse. Make sure you have clothing that will protect you from the elements, let allow you to walk comfortably without getting too hot. You don’t need to blow a bunch of money on pricey and stylish walking gear - unless you just want to! If it is winter, keep track of what the temperature and other conditions are, what you wear and how it feels each day. When starting out, you will have a tendency to dress too warmly. The article of clothing that does require some thought are your shoes. These need to be made for walking or running, provide a good fit, and give you adequate support. This is where you could use some expert advice from a local sports equipment store. Go in, talk to someone about your plans, and most importantly, try on a variety of shoes. If it comes down to a couple of pairs and you can’t decide, one trick is to put one of each of your feet at the same time and walk around the store. This will usually make your choice for you. If it still doesn’t matter, get the cheapest pair. Okay, you have good shoes and you are dressed for the elements. Ready to get started? Many people like to go through a stretching routine before they head out. Unless you have a specific problem that needs attention, it would be better to use 50 + Living | March 2019

the first few minutes as your stretching and warm-up. Start out at a leisurely stroll, gently swinging your arms and walking at a comfortable pace. Keep this up for five to ten minutes until your heart rate and breathing pick up a bit before getting into your fitness walking pace. This is where the workout begins. You need to push yourself, but not overdo it. This is a fine line and a balancing act, and one that requires a bit of focus and attention. Start walking much faster than you normally would. Not quite a run, but as if you are in a great hurry. You want to feel a little bit of a stretch in your quadriceps (front of your thighs), your hamstrings (back of your thighs), and your calves. You don’t want to feel any pain or discomfort in the front part of your lower legs. If you do, that’s an indication to slow down, especially downhill. At the same time, use an exaggerated arm swing. You don’t need to go crazy and you don’t want to strain your shoulders or elbows. Just pick up the pace of your arms to keep pace with the new walking pace and swing them up and back a bit more than normal. This not only will get your cardio and heart rate up a bit more, it will help tone your biceps and triceps (front and back of your upper arms). Focus on your pace and arm swing throughout the walk until you are ready to cool down, so that you maintain the level of workout throughout. It’s easy to lose focus and slow down but don’t.

get a couple of light dumbbells and carry those with you. This will increase the intensity of the workout and continue toning up your arms. For a great weight-reducing workout that increases your fitness level and muscle tone, while clearing the mind and getting fresh air, fitness walking is the way to go. Ee

Once you are through with the walk, don’t just stop and sit down or hit the showers. You have pushed your muscles, whether you feel it now or not. Drop down to your warm-up pace and take a leisurely walk for at least five minutes. Allow your muscles to relax, and your heart rate and breathing to get back to normal. During this time you should also replenish your water. How long should all this take? Like many questions, the answer to that is, it depends. Had you been walking before? What is your general level of fitness? If you are just starting out, then try to maintain the workout portion of the walk for 15 to 20 minutes if you can. If that’s too much, work up to that level over the first couple of weeks. As your fitness increases, don’t rest on your laurels. Increase the distance first as time allows and then the pace. Once you have maxed out the allowable time (45 minutes is a good target), and you are walking as fast as you can without strain, March 2019 | 50 + Living

1 If you’re an animal lover, you’ve likely already considered how much a pet can improve your life. However, it’s not just your mood that benefits--there’s a fascinating range of scientific studies proving that the company of animals can have a significant impact on your physical well-being as well. Here are 10 of the most exciting ways in which owning a pet can improve your health.

1. They can reduce allergic reactions It used to be assumed that children who grew up around a pet were more likely to develop significant allergies. However, modern research suggests the opposite; there’s compelling evidence that being around any hairy or furry animal reduces the risk of childhood allergies and asthma. For example, the pediatrician responsible for the largest scientific study on this topic revealed that blood tests on children up to 1 year old were almost 20 percent less likely to contain allergy markers if the children lived with a pet.

2. They lower blood pressure According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, spending time with a trusted pet can help to reduce blood Page 14

pressure levels, especially if you’ve previously been diagnosed with hypertension. It is suspected all meaningful bonds between pets and owners can have this effect (even watching a tank of fish is proven to reduce stress and muscle tension!), but there is particularly striking evidence that dogs have a positive influence on blood pressure. Interestingly, this benefit persists beyond the home, with dog owners exhibiting lower blood pressure levels even when undertaking stressful tasks away from their pet.

 3. They cut stroke risk Since dogs tend to be the focus of a lot of studies discussing the impact of pets on stroke risk, you might assume that the connection is related to a healthier lifestyle. After all, dog owners need to go on regular walks. However, recent research on cat owners shows a 40-percent reduction in stroke risk, so there is obviously more to the story.

 4. They reduce certain Alzheimer’s symptoms Anxiety is a natural consequence of the confusion associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and companion animals are proven to reduce both the frequency and intensity of this symptom. Cats 50 + Living | March 2019

seem to be among the best pets for Alzheimer’s patients, because of their self-sufficiency. As a result, increasing numbers of nursing homes for dementia patients organize days where residents can interact with affectionate animals in meaningful, soothing ways.

5. They boost tolerance of chronic pain Those who suffer from enduring injuries or from conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and lupus know all too well that chronic pain can seriously undermine overall well-being. However, studies show that quality time with a pet can reduce perception of chronic pain. In addition, research performed at Loyola University shows that people recovering from major surgery typically have less need for painkillers if they are offered pet therapy.

6. They improve survival rates after a heart attack Perhaps one of the most surprising and fascinating consequences of owning a pet is that you’re less likely to die after a heart attack. More specifically, one groundbreaking study of 400 heart attack patients found that those who lived with dogs were more likely to survive for at least a full year. The explanation may lie in the fact that pet owners tend to have lower levels of LDL cholesterol, which is a major predictor for heart disease and heart attacks. Presently, however, it’s unclear whether something about pet interaction directly reduces cholesterol or if pet owners tend to have lifestyles that more effectively control cholesterol.

7. They help children with ADHD and autism Kids who have been diagnosed with ADHD tend to become more responsible, and more reliably adhere to routines, if they have a pet in the home. In addition, autistic children are shown to become more expressive and empathetic after developing a close bond with a cat or dog.

8. They lower the risk of depression A review of the most recent studies on pets and mental health shows that animal owners are less likely to develop clinical depression. This benefit is thought to relate to the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, both of which induce happiness and relaxation and are produced when you interact with a pet. Research on the emotional states of gravely ill patients has even shown that a strong attachment to an animal is associated with better prospects March 2019 | 50 + Living

for long-term survival.

9. They improve resistance to disease In addition to being less likely to develop allergies, babies and young children who live with pets reliably test as having higher levels of certain immune system chemicals that suggest greater resistance to disease. Researchers hypothesize that this health benefit results from the fact that pets facilitate exposure to dirt, allergens, and pathogens from outdoors, so it’s likely that children who socialize with outdoor animals will experience the greatest boost in immune function.

10. They can support physical fitness Finally, and perhaps most obviously, it’s easy to get motivated to exercise if you have a pet that encourages physical activity. For example, riding a horse, hiking with a dog, or even running around the house after a playful kitten will all raise your heart rate and metabolism. In particular, older people who might be tempted to adopt sedentary lifestyles may stay active for longer when there’s a dog to walk at least once a day. There are a great many health benefits associated with owning a pet. Although pets can be costly to keep and necessitate certain sacrifices of freedom, they not only provide a great deal of love, but may also be able to extend your lifespan. Ee

Simple Meditation for Beginners

Meditation is scientifically proven to have many positive effects on mental and physical health. It has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, improve insulin resistance, and decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke. The medical community recognizes meditation as treatment for chronic pain, depression, and substance abuse. Best of all, meditation is something that anyone can do, and it has zero unwanted side effects. While there are many different meditation techniques, you do not have to attend a class or find a guru to start a meditation practice. You simply have to start meditating. The first step is deciding to meditate regularly. This might sound like a big commitment, but you only need 15 minutes a day. Try setting your alarm clock 15 minutes earlier, or set aside 15 minutes after dinner. If you have trouble sleeping, you might want to practice meditation right before bedtime. It doesn’t matter when you meditate as long as you incorporate it into your daily routine. When you are ready, find a comfortable place to sit. This can be on your couch, the floor, a lawn chair beside the pool, or anywhere else that you can sit undisturbed for 15 minutes. Lying down is not recommended because you might fall asleep. Don’t be concerned if it is difficult for you to contort your legs into a Page 16

pretzel shape. Just sit in the position that is most relaxing to you, and let your hands rest in your lap. Now close your eyes, and take in a deep breath. Slowly fill your lungs to capacity, then slowly and deliberately exhale through your mouth. Take two more deep cleansing breaths, exhaling slowly each time. You will feel your body relax more with each exhalation. For the next 15 minutes, pay attention to your breathing. Notice how the air feels coming into your nose. How does that contrast with the way it feels exiting your nose? Let the rhythmic rise and fall of your chest calm your mind. Enjoy these moments of freedom from the stresses of your daily life. When you are finished, take one last deep cleansing breath, and open your eyes. You have just meditated. The goal of meditation is to allow your mind to relax. Undoubtedly, when you first start meditating, you will find that random and uncontrolled thoughts spring into your mind in rapid succession. Don’t be discouraged when this happens. This is normal. Meditation trains the brain to take a break from all the worries of the day, but like anything else, it takes time. When thoughts pop into your head while meditating, simply say to them, “This is not the time for you.” At first you may feel that you are fighting a losing battle, but with continued 50 + Living | March 2019

practice, your mind will learn to let go of these thoughts, at least while you meditate. At first, you may not even feel like you are meditating. This is common among beginners, but keep at it. You will soon find that your body relaxes and your mind calms as if by reflex when you sit to meditate. At some point, you might want to explore other meditation techniques. There are many to try, including mindfulness, guided, transcendental, and others. Instruction on each method is readily available on the internet and in book stores. You may find that you prefer to listen to meditation music, use a mantra, or be guided through your meditation by someone else. It doesn’t matter which method you chose as long as you meditate on a regular basis. In today’s hustle-bustle world, anyone can benefit from regular meditation. Along with reduced anxiety, those who meditate decrease their risk of heart disease, boost their immune system, and report an improved feeling of overall well-being. There is no risk involved; no worry of adverse effects. Make daily meditation part of your routine to see the results for yourself. Ee

Taylor’d wi Style

Closet Bliss By JeanAnn Taylor

How often do you look into your crowded closet and think, I have nothing to wear? This stressful predicament affects many of us because we often buy and keep clothing that is inappropriate for our personality, our body type, or our lifestyle. There are many reasons why we have this tendency, but there is only one way to repair the dilemma—get rid of clothing clutter intentionally and rationally, then make smart, future clothing purchases. The hopelessly, overwhelming emotion many of us feel when faced with this task can be dissipated by consciously evaluating what we own, and then by deciding what to discard and what to keep.

a pattern of buying the same type of clothing over and over. We tend to make purchases based on who we want to be or for what we want to do—not always for what we actually need. The end goal is to only buy, and keep, items that reflect who you are, and what you will actually wear. Next, it’s time to evaluate the condition of your closet, dresser, and any other place you store clothing. Are your clothes organized by season or color, or are they mixed up in a hodgepodge manner? Are your clothes hung neatly or haphazardly thrown about? Are your sweaters crammed into drawers or folded tidily so they aren’t wrinkled when you take them out? How you store your clothing matters because it affects your mindset when you are choosing what to wear. I believe the best way to proceed is to take all your clothing out of your drawers and closet. Obviously, you need to do this on a day you can fully dedicate to this task. Be prepared by having plenty of hangers and a full-length mirror in the room. You may prefer to do this alone, or it may be helpful to invite a friend over to make it a day of fun.

The first step in reaching closet serenity is having a clear understanding of who you are. As I wrote in my January article, knowing yourself is essential to authentic expression. When you can define your individual style, you can make shrewd clothing choices and stop purchasing clothing that ends up never being worn. Knowing your style is also economical. It’s easy to get into Page 18

It is often recommended to use the same type of hanger for all your clothing. They can be wood, plastic, wire, or velvet. I admit I don’t do this. I just can’t rationalize getting rid of the perfectly good hangers I already own. I have however replaced a few with velvet hangers. They’re great for tops that slide off plastic hangers, they keep sweaters from stretching out, and because they’re thin, they take up less room in your closet. 50 + Living | March 2019

When all your clothing is out and laying on your bed or floor, it’s time to try each piece on and take a long, scrutinizing look into your mirror. Try on one category at a time: all your jeans, all your summer dresses, winter tops, blouses, and so on. This will help to keep you organized, and it’s the best way to determine which items you want to keep from those you are ready to let go. As you go through this process, ask yourself the following style questions: Does it fit my body? Obviously, if it doesn’t physically fit, you can place it in the discard pile. Does it fit my lifestyle? If not, you’re not likely going to wear it again. Does it fit the lifestyle I want? Articles of clothing can help you visualize. Are there stains, tears, or pilling that will keep me from wearing this? If so, discard unless you plan to sew, mend, or have the item cleaned. If I were shopping today, would I buy this? If you wouldn’t buy it today, you probably won’t wear it again. When was the last time I wore this? If it’s been over a year, you most likely won’t wear it again. If I were moving, would I want to pack it up, take it with me, unpack it, and find a place to store it? If not, you know what to do. And the most important question to ask yourself: Does this make me feel beautiful and confident? There is absolutely no reason to wear something that makes you feel anything less than wonderful. These questions can be difficult to answer. There was a reason you spent your hard-earned money on that bedazzled sheath dress; maybe you imagined yourself as the life of a party. Maybe you envisioned yourself wearing that polka-dot bikini on an exotic vacation to the Caribbean to mingle with wild, pink flamingos. Or you dreamed of walking through Central Park wearing a long, cashmere overcoat as the snow gently fell to the ground at sunset . . . Maybe you bought that power suit because you see yourself at the head of the conference table. Answering the style questions not only helps you decide what to keep, they also offer insight into your wishes and aspirations. When you have a clear idea of what you own, you can more clearly understand what you want to own. March 2019 | 50 + Living

There are also exceptions to these guidelines. I will never give away the black velvet swing-coat that belonged to my grandmother, or the ballgown I wore in my first dance competition. Although they take up quite a bit of closet space, they have sentimental value, so I make the choice to keep them. There are other items you may only wear once or twice a year, but they’re worth keeping so you don’t have to replace them. The key is to make smart choices based on logistics as well as emotions. Getting back to the task at hand, as you try on each piece of clothing and ask yourself the style questions, you will create a pile of “keepers” and a pile of “discarders.” Take your discarders out of the room so they don’t distract you, and separate your keepers into cold and warm weather categories. When you have completed this phase, you can begin to place everything into its allocated space. But first, take a few minutes to clean your drawers and shelves and vacuum your closet floor. It’s an easy task while the space is empty. continued on page 20 Page 19

Closet Bliss continued from page 19 Next, take a look at your available storage area. It’s best to keep all like-items together so they are easier to find. If you own several long-sleeve tops, choose a drawer that will accommodate all of them. This will keep you from having to search for the one you want in more than one location. Place items you wear frequently in areas that are easily accessible. Depending on your space, you may need to store winter sweaters on a top shelf during the summer and summer tops in that same spot during the winter. Hang dresses, blouses, pants, suits, and jackets in a manner that makes sense to you. You may prefer to color code your closet, or you may prefer to organize by seasons. It simply depends on your space availability and personal preference. I’ve found that with the weather fluctuation in WNC, color coding works best for me. I can easily mix and match, layer, and create new looks with the same articles of clothing. To keep your closet in shipshape, take care to hang all your clothing in the same direction. Folded clothes will take up less space when they are folded in the same way and neatly stacked. Take time for tidiness. It’s easier to hang one shirt daily than ten shirts on Friday morning as you are searching for something to wear. The last step is to make savvy buying decisions so your closet doesn’t once again become discombobulated and filled with items you don’t need. It may help to take pictures of your stack of winter-white sweaters so when you see one while out shopping, you can look at what you already own and then make the decision as to whether you need another one, or not. (Note to self.)

When catalog or online shopping, consider what the item will look like on your body. The reason models are extraordinarily skinny is because designers want their garments to look like they are hanging on a hanger—with no lumps or bumps showing through. They also want you to imagine that the shirt on that size 0, 20-year-old model will look the exact same way on your body. It probably won’t. Before making future purchases, take a moment and really think about who you are and what you need. Consider if buying an item will help you focus on your dreams or if it will simply take up space. Stop and think about when and where you will wear the item. Conscious shopping can save time, money, space, and mental anguish. Cleaning out closet clutter may seem like a daunting task, but imagine how you will feel when you can open a clean, neatly organized drawer and find the exact item you are looking for. Imagine the peaceful feeling of walking into a closet where all your clothes are hung in an orderly manner. Imagine the bliss of knowing what you have, where it is, that it is wrinkle-free, and ready to wear. And, as far as that polka-dot bikini goes . . . I would keep it. It doesn’t take up much space and you just never know. Ee

4 Tips To Successful Decluttering Decluttering is something most people need to tackle now and then. Even the most organized people can find things piling up over the years. The good news is you can successfully conquer the clutter. This article outlines 4 steps you can take to deal with the clutter in your home.

1. Focus on one area at a time When you are eager to declutter, it’s easy to move from one area to another without actually finishing what you started. It’s easy to get distracted in your excitement to declutter. In order to successfully declutter you must focus on one area at a time and finish it before you move on to something else. If you want to declutter your purses, bring them all out and go through them. Decide which purses you will keep and which you will donate. Remember that you must have a place to put the purses you are keeping. Once you’re finished decluttering your purses you can move onto the next item of your choosing. Always finish one area before you move on to the next. Doing this will result in more successful decluttering.

2. Let go Part of decluttering is being able to let go. You can’t toss everything into boxes and move them to the garage and declare your home decluttered. It’s important to go through items and get rid of things that no longer serve a purpose for you. Clothes and shoes that don’t fit, toys your kids have outgrown, books and movies you no longer enjoy can all be given to charity for those less fortunate to enjoy. Some people are afraid to let go of things in case they need them one day in the future. Remember that if you ever need something, you can get another one. March 2019 | 50 + Living

3. Organize It’s important to create a space for everything in your home. When things are piled on the floor or counter tops spaces look more cluttered. When things are neatly placed where they belong, things look tidy. Don’t force things into spaces just so you can keep them. Anything that doesn’t have a home or you can’t create one for is something that can probably get rid of. Anything of real sentimental value should be treated with the appropriate respect. Either display it nicely or pack it away to pass down to a child one day. Avoid treating everything as though it has sentimental value simply so you can hold on to it.

4. Have a long-term plan It’s important that you make decluttering a routine in your household. Doing it once and very well is good, but things will pile up again very quickly. It’s important to get rid of things that come in on a regular basis such as newspapers, magazines, and food containers. If you don’t take them out at least once a week, they can create a lot of clutter. It’s also important to make time to declutter clothes, toys, and other things that make their way into your home over the weeks once or twice a year to keep them from piling up and taking over your life. Getting rid of clutter might seem like an overwhelming task, but if you take it step by step, you can successfully declutter. Don’t pressure yourself to get it done in a day or even a week. Decluttering will take time, but it can be accomplished. Ee

Common Maladies That Are Cured by Drinking More Water

Y

ou’ve probably been told that drinking more water improves health, but did you know that water can help cure a slew of daily discomforts? Here’s the lowdown on what ailments good old H2O can alleviate: 1) Headaches Headaches have many causes, including allergies, migraines and sinus infections. One common cause is dehydration. If you regularly experience headaches, try drinking more water.

2) Dizziness Dizziness and light-headedness are two common symptoms of dehydration. People with low blood pressure are extra prone to dizziness and can counter this by increasing water intake. If you experience dizziness or black out when standing up, that’s your cue to grab a bottle and chug.

3) Weight Gain Water can help you curb cravings for salty, fatty food. Do you Page 22

have a craving? Drink a few glasses of water first. If you’re still hungry in twenty minutes, prepare a healthy snack.

4) Bloating Water is needed to keep your pipes running smooth. Water, especially when ingested as warm tea, can help relieve abdominal bloating.

5) Constipation Is everything blocked up below? Your digestive tract needs water to do its duty. Drink a few liters of water and relax with a book until things get moving again.

6) Dry Skin Do you suffer from dry skin? A cream will only take you so far. Drinking water is like moisturizing your skin from the inside.

7) Acne Many people report fewer incidences of acne if they take care to drink at least two liters of water per day. Water helps flush acne-causing toxins from the body. 50 + Living | March 2019

8) Fatigue Are you tired frequently? It could be that you didn’t sleep enough, but perhaps it’s due to the fact that you’re not drinking enough. Water can help relieve fatigue. It’s especially important to drink plenty of water if your caffeine intake is higher. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it makes you lose fluids. Drink at least one glass of water for every caffeinated beverage.Â

How Much Water is Enough? Health advisors often advise drinking at least eight glasses or two liters daily. The truth is that everyone has different needs, due to size, body composition, blood pressure, and lifestyle. Consider two liters a daily minimum. If you do physical work, exercise, or have low blood pressure, add a few liters to your daily intake. Ee

4 Simple Tips to Satisfy Your Comfort Food Cravings (BPT) - After a long day, digging into a hearty pasta dish or a piping hot bowl of soup can fill you with warmth and coziness - especially on those chilly days. The good news is that comfort foods don’t have to be unhealthy or take a lot of time to make. We can still enjoy the rich, flavorful options that feed your cravings with easy-to-make dishes that incorporate wholesome, nutritious ingredients (some taken directly from your grocery store’s chilled foods section). Here are some helpful tips to enjoy comforting meals without the guilt: * Combine frozen and prepared foods with fresh produce. Frozen meals and pizzas, as well as chilled pasta, are the perfect bases for balanced meals and come in many varieties. Shop the refrigerator and freezer sections for your favorite dishes that you can simply pair with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy to create a balanced plate. It can be much easier and less time-consuming than cooking a full meal from scratch, and leave you more time to do other activities beyond cooking. * Try recipes featuring a balance of protein, dairy and vegetables. Cozy up on the couch with a rich and tasty mug of minestrone soup loaded with seasonal vegetables. Adding refrigerated pasta like Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini helps make it a complete meal, cutting time spent on preparation, but not on taste. The blend of ricotta, Parmesan and romano cheeses in the tortellini perfectly complements veggies like sweet potatoes, kale and carrots in a steaming, herby broth. Try the sample recipe below! * Strategically mix in vegetables. There are several ways to sneak veggies into your favorite comfort foods. Sprinkle greens into scrambled eggs and quiches, incorporate shredded zucchini and carrots into baked goods, add spinach or broccoli to spaghetti sauce, or make pumpkin waffles. The possibilities are endless. * Use fruit to indulge your sweet tooth. For many people, comfort foods are all about desserts. Those striving to eat healthier can still enjoy their sweets in moderation, but may wish to incorporate ingredients like fresh fruits so they also offer greater nutritional value. Consider warm berry cobblers, baked apples, carrot cake and/or smoothies that make use of fruits and even veggies. Page 28

Instant Pot Minestrone Soup with Ricotta Pesto Crostini Ingredients: For the minestrone: 4 ounces thick cut bacon, small dice 1 teaspoon each fresh or dried rosemary, thyme & sage 1 yellow onion, chopped 2 medium size carrots, medium dice 1 red bell pepper, medium cut 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium sweet potato, peeled & medium dice 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1/2 bunch of kale, stems removed & chopped 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes 3 quarts beef stock or broth 1/2 cup dried white beans Small rind of Parmesan cheese 1 dried bay leaf 9-ounce package of Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini Olive oil 1 teaspoon kosher salt Fresh pepper

For the crostini: 1/4 cup Buitoni Pesto with Basil 1 small baguette 1/2 cup ricotta cheese 1 cup cherry tomatoes Olive oil 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions: Pre-heat instant pot to the sauté “normal” setting along with 1 teaspoon of oil. Add the bacon and cook for 5 minutes, then add the rosemary, thyme and sage. Cook for 3 more minutes or until the bacon is golden in color, then add the onions, carrots, bell peppers, red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and a few cracks of pepper. Mix well and turn the sauté setting to “more” on the instant pot and cook for 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another 6 minutes, or until the veggies are soft and have wilted down by a good amount. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the kale, crushed tomatoes, beef stock, dried beans, Parmesan rind, bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few cracks of pepper. Make sure you don’t add liquid past the max line on the instant pot. Mix well and check for seasoning; you will likely need a bit more salt. Press cancel on the instant pot, put the lid on, and set to pressure cook on high for 40 minutes. Once the cook time is done, let the instant pot sit for 10 minutes, then carefully release the pressure manually. Make sure to remove the bay leaf and Parmesan rind. When the soup is ready, bring a 4-quart pot of water to boil and cook the Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini according to package instructions. Drain well and add the tortellini to the pot of soup and stir. Make the crostini by seasoning the tomatoes with 1 teaspoon of oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a couple cracks of pepper, and roast in a 400 F oven for 15-20 minutes. Once the tomatoes start to burst they are ready. Toast the bread, schmear on some ricotta cheese, spread on the Buitoni Pesto with Basil and top with roasted tomatoes. Serve the soup with the crostini and enjoy! Soup will keep for 3 days in the fridge or can be frozen for 3 months. Ee
