A l l of u s hav e one of ou r v ery own: A story of why we are attracted to the mou ntains of W estern N orth C arol ina . . . and the ensuing inner y earning to call this magical land our home - - ev en if that means j ust for the summers. For some, the story continues to blossom in the form of a dream that calls to y our soul w aiting for the courage of fulfillment. or others, it is the story of finally e ecuting on that dream by follow ing y our heart. O v er the last sev en y ears our family j ourney has ev olv ed from dreaming to fulfillment when in the summer of 2014 a truly special home finally picked us. This chronicle is about our j ourney and some of the lessons w e learned along the w ay . We w ould like to imagine that our tale might j ust inspire y ou to mov e from dream state to fulfilling your desires. ike many families that find their w ay to WN C w e began spending time in the region as a result of our children; B rooke ( 1 4) , Grant ( 1 2) and Ry an ( 1 0) , and their attendance at the local summer camps. The boy s attended Camp Rockmont in B lack Mountain which they affectionately consider their “ true” second home and B rooke enthusiastically looked forw ard to Camp Rockbrook in B rev ard and most recently Camp M eri- M ac. A s summer approached w e w ould spend time planning their respectiv e camp w eeks so they would coincide. Then our ne t step was to find a vacation rental that w e could use as our home base to e plore the region. O ur plan alw ay s inv olv ed scheduling the v acation rental house so that M egan and I w ould have a week or so to e plore and when the children finished camp w e w ould spend another w eek discov ering the region w ith them.

Our dreaming began the first summer spent in Western N orth Carolina for so many reasons; The cool mountain air, the afternoon storms that rolled through the mountains, the stumbling upon a mountain music session in B rev ard and then strolling out to find that they closed main street for the w eekly summer sq uare dance, the amaz ing trails for mountain biking, trail running and hiking, the microbrew eries, the art and culinary community , picking blackberries and blueberries at Grav ey ard Fields, and of course w e w ould be remiss for not mentioning our pilgrimage to 1 2 B ones. B ut most of all, our family w as draw n to the mountains, the people of Western N orth Carolina, and the adventurous e periences that aw aited us. Our first si summers were intermi ed with typical family leisure activ ities and the inev itable hunt for that perfect property . We w ould pick up ev ery property magaz ine av ailable and eagerly scan through the pages searching for “ the one” that called to us. When w e arriv ed back home M egan, B rooke and I would find ourselves daydreaming and often poking around the internet for property in WN C. D oes this sound j ust like y ou? If so, y ou hav e an itch and it needs to be scratched! Each progressiv e summer w as like Groundhog D ay w ith the same routine: Wishing that w e had a home to call our ow n and spending time w ith the kids searching ev ery county of Western N orth Carolina but nev er hav ing the courage to pull the trigger, mostly because the property w e all imagined still had not surfaced. Fortunately our previous si years of simply

dreaming w ere about to change in the summer of 201 4. In preparing for our summer trip in 201 4 w e made a v ery conscious decision that “ this w as the summer” that we would find our homestead. While inv estigating properties w e called upon v arious brokers to learn more about their listings. D uring this process w e w ere also try ing to determine if there w as a broker that w ould rise to the top from the perspectiv e of professionalism and e pertise. e w ere attempting to decide if w e w ould continue to scout the area on our ow n or partner w ith someone in the ev ent w e came across a true professional. B eing in the real estate business my self, w e w ere not looking for a real estate broker to j ust show us property . Rather w e w ere seeking an e perienced advisor who would serv e as a trusted and patient adv ocate. A s destiny has a w ay of play ing out, w e stumbled upon the w ebsite of M ark Fields and liked the w ay he presented his listings. A fter spending some time on the phone w ith M ark, I shared w ith M egan that I think w e found “ our guy ” w ho could become our trusted partner. We arranged a meeting and as a result of spending an hour w ith M ark our initial instincts were confirmed: Mark was not a traditional or conv entional realtor/ broker. A lthough w e established criteria for our search, M ark encouraged us to keep an open mind and to e plore areas that we were not initially considering as a means of confirming our criteria. Our criteria included 5 to 1 0 rural acres and w ithin an hour driv e of A shev ille. Spring 2015 | Fine Homes of WNC 15


A s Woody A llen liked to say “ If y ou w ant to see God laugh, tell him about y our plans” . The first property that we decided to see was in stark contrast to our desired criteria: It was a home located in a neighborhood in South sheville. Begrudgingly, I decided to go along for the ride so we could uickly get on with the real search. I bet you sense the twist to this story by now . We turned onto a priv ate lane to a sw eeping driv ew ay w ith a home privately perched in a cathedral of trees. It looked like it w as straight out of a story book. e recall the welcoming and embracing staircase that coa ed our eyes to the front door w ith the gas lantern burning. I thought to myself; this can’t be, it is all w rong this is not w hat w e hav e been looking for all of these y ears. 16 Fine Homes of WNC | Spring 2015

H ow ev er, w hen the front door opened w e w ere instantly in lov e. e could immediately feel the craftsmanship and warmth that emanated from w ithin. The details, while not all noticeable to the eye, were clearly obvious. No sooner that w e opened the door the kids scattered about the house each looking for the specialness that spoke to them. We spent three hours enj oy ing the house and the grounds. I continued to think to myself how can this be I feel that we belong here but how could that be if it did not check all of our bo es M eanw hile the kids and M egan w ere assuring me that “ w e w ere just picked by the house . Megan and B rooke hav e alw ay s dreamed of gardening and grow ing their ow n food in the mountains and having chickens for fresh eggs and

sure enough the property had a custom built chicken cottage with an amaz ing garden to boot. s Megan rounded the last corner of the property her ey es fell upon a pear espalier and proclaimed she is liv ing the life I alw ay s w anted to liv e” referring to the ow ner of the home and then declared I am done looking . The children uickly joined in with their vote that they w ished to mov e to the home permanently although w e were only searching for a home that we could spend time during the summers and school breaks. learly the home picked us and for the remainder of our time ov er the ne t two days all other properties were measured against this special home. With our dream property in our heart and minds w e asked M ark to guide us through the offer process.


What w e appreciated most about M ark w as his incredible capability to simply listen to w hat w e w ere thinking and feeling during the negotiation process he effectively communicated w ith us the difference between perception and reality . e learned a valuable lesson because of his counsel; never assume y ou know w hat others are thinking. A lthough w e stated that this w as the summer w e w ould buy our dream property w e are convinced that without Mark by our side we would have talked ourselves out of executing on our dream. This does not infer in any manner that M ark pushed us to proceed. Rather, he provided us with market insight that afforded us a high degree of comfort and confidence that w e w ere making the right decision for our family . We w ould not be the proud stewards of our new sheville home but for him being our advisor. s such another lesson that w e can share w ith y ou is to take the time to seek out a realtor w ho w ill become your trusted advisor and with any

luck he or she j ust may end up becoming y our friend. O ur family is so excited about all of the possibilities to recreate ourselves in the shadows of the B lue Ridge M ountains. We look forward to cultivating fruits and vegetables and eating off the land. We are especially excited about selecting the chickens for the coop. I am looking forw ard to the outdoor adventures that await our family and the memories that w e w ill create w ith family and friends at our little slice of heaven which we fittingly named StoryBrooke lace. O ne of the important lessons that w e w ish to share w ith others is take your time and rent in different areas of WN C so that y ou can get a feel for w hat is important to y ou. aving rented many houses in the mountains over the years, one thing became apparent and a must have on our list as M egan instigated the 20 minute milk rule . That is, if she ran out of milk she needed to be at a store w ithin 20 minutes. hat we love about the location of StoryBrooke lace is that we can be in the mountains all day

enj oy ing the mountain bike trails while still having the ability to come home to clean- up and head out to one of the amaz ing farmto- table restaurants or a local microbrew ery all w ithin 20 minutes of our home. A lthough our story continues to unfold in Western N orth Carolina this tale w ould not be complete w ithout acknow ledging some of the special people w ho w ere brought into our lives over the last several months to include Steve and arnell Rogers the previous ow ners and builders of the home, M ark Fields our realtor, L ee A nn L ew is w ith A tlantic B ay M ortgage, Terah o our favorite local writer and poet, Carolina M ornings w hich helps us manage and share our home with vacation renters who w ere j ust like us once upon a time, and our new neighbors w ho are all so genuine having welcomed us to the neighborhood w ith open arms and hearts. Trials of this type are open to rose breeders around the world - from professional to beginner. New rose varieties will be planted for trial each May. They are evaluated for overall health and rigor; fragrance; disease resistance; and ability to
