This year certainly is leading up to be one of the most historical moments in recent time. Regardless of personal opinions, the events of 2020, and COVID-19 specifically, have impacted everyone to some degree or another. As landscapers, we don’t typically have much to say on political agendas, emergency services, or social movements. Instead, we’re usually over here deciding the best native species to plant in relation to sun, water, soil and aesthetics. As the world continues to push forward, and more people are rekindling their relationship with their home, we do believe we have some life lessons that might make this year a little easier. Whether you need a little guidance, or just want to simplify your lifestyle with mindfulness tactics, we’ve got some tips and questions to help enrich your life, naturally, starting right in your backyard.
Each Season has Its Unique Set of Challenges - Embrace Them Contrary to what many people think, we as landscapers aren’t in control of the natural world. We strive to understand and work alongside nature, in ways that bring the results we’re looking for. Even with predictions, patterns and forecasts, we still don’t know what the next season will bring us. Working outdoors is a meticulous dance, that if done correctly, leaves the audience begging for more. That dance can be -interrupted with too much or too little rain, or extreme temperatures and weather, in addition to the human involvement in creating

and maintaining landscapes. When a tree falls on a property, it instantly turns a shaded area into a sunny one, causing its inhabitants to either strive or fall short. An increase of rain can create root rot and new flooding, while a lack of rain or watering can be detrimental to both non and established root systems. How are you embracing change and adapting recently?
You Can’t Force Growth - You Can Only Guide The natural world has its preferences, and it’s our job to recreate and act as a guide in order for its success. Whether sowing a seed or planting established root system - you must nurture its needs in order for it flourish. We can improvise with irrigation, soil amendments and proper care, but it’s all we can do. The same applies to our own choices in life. If we embrace growth as it comes, we are able to then focus on putting ourselves in situations that guide us towards more positive situations. Sometimes we’re in situations that may be uncomfortable or new, and the answer may not be apparent, but it is best to respond strategically, not react. Guide yourself to a better situation.
Prioritize with a Set of ‘Realistic Goggles’ With every grand idea is a set of smaller, less ‘desirable’ steps, that need to be taken to achieve a goal. We constantly work with clients on achieving their dream yard, one that is often something they’ve been looking forward to for years.
Remember the Basics - A Proper Foundation From healthy soil to correct drainage, a proper foundation with any yard has multiple variables. Our job is to make sure all of those are working together, so that everything above the ground can both grow and be stable, house included. Newly installed plants need soil that’s amended and tailored to the needs of that specific species. If water is flooding your yard, it can lead to root rot as well as leak into the foundation of your home - neither bringing joy into your life. It’s often hard to take a step back and really think about your physical and emotional needs. A prime example of a physical need is water. The average person in the US still only drinks 1.8 cups a day, which doesn’t come close to the 8.5 recommended cups from the European Hydration Institute. Just like a new landscape, you want to make sure everything is getting the proper amount of water to establish a healthy root system.
Create Meaningful Boundaries For some, we design fences that strictly to keep things either in or out. Others find them more for decoration and accent pieces of their design. From non-organic material, like metal, to a more natural fence with evergreens and shrubs - a barrier serves a purpose for the person who installs it.
As humans, we often create emotional barriers as well as physical ones.
