A traditional wine shop with an untraditional approach By Gina Trippi and John Kerr, co-owners of Metro Wines
Can’t find that elusive wine the two of you enjoyed while watching fishing boats bob in the sea on your last night in Cinque Terre? For many in western North Carolina, that search often leads to the doors of Metro Wines just north of downtown Asheville. Yes, they’ll track down this special bottle. But those that make the journey also discover a place that is more than just a shop to buy wine. 24 Fine Homes of WNC | Winter 2016
Metro Wines is a welcoming place for the wine expert and novice alike. The warm design of the shop instantly makes you feel at home. Once inside, one of the staff offers you a taste of the wines featured that day to enjoy while you peruse the well selected portfolio. And you’re likely to notice the lively film club debating the merits of the latest release in the back room as you weave your way to the Cabernet Franc aisle. So, what makes Metro Wines different? Owners John Kerr and Gina Trippi follow the philosophy that wine is about food, family, friends and community. They wanted to create a special place that serves as a community center – a place to enrich the neighborhood. Rather than filling the entire shop with wine, they have reserved about one quarter of the space for classes, clubs, and fund raising events. Within two years since opening, they have hosted nearly Winter 2016 | Fine Homes of WNC 25
40 benefits for the area’s non-profit organizations, including Homeward Bound, Open Hearts, Pisgah Legal Services, and Full Circle Farm Sanctuary. And they donate a substantial amount of their proceeds to local non-profits. Their programs include the wine community as well. Metro Wines’ “Asheville School of Wine” teaches classes for the OLLI senior education program at UNCA such as “Wines You Never Knew You Loved.” OLLI coordinators are astounded by the consistently full classes and zero dropout rate. “It helps if you serve wine during lectures,” John quipped. Metro also leads the “Blind Tasting League,” turning the sommeliers’ serious task of identifying an unknown wine into a truly fun game. 26 Fine Homes of WNC | Winter 2016
But above all, the shop is about value. “Yes, we’ll sell you that $200 big name bottle if you wish,” Gina offers. “But what we live for is providing you that remarkable, unknown bottle for a great price.” These wines are often produced by small wineries operated by a husband and wife team who are in it more for the art than the money. Since they are unknown, all you pay for is the quality of the wine in the bottle and nothing more. The community has embraced the concept, voting Metro Wines Asheville’s number one wine shop in the Mountain Xpress “Best Of” 2015 poll. So drop by Metro Wines when you’re on the thriving Charlotte Street corridor. You’ll not only get a good wine at a great price, but you’ll also be supporting the community.

Landscape designer dedicated to protecting Mother Nature Article by “Team” for Fine Homes of WNC One of New England’s most sought-after landscape designers, Ted Carter, recently visited Asheville to tour the Biltmore Estate. In a career spanning 40 years, Ted has developed a deep appreciation for working in harmony with the land. His inspired landscapes not only fit the existing environment, but also look as though they have always been there. Out of Ted’s work has grown a passion for reconnecting with the natural 36 Fine Homes of WNC | Winter 2016
world. In books he has co-authored with Ellen Gunter, Reunion, How We Heal Our Broken Connection to the Earth, and Earth Calling, A Climate Change Handbook for the 21st Century, he explores pathways to reconnect with our natural world. Carolyn Myss, five-time New York Times bestselling author and internationally renowned speaker in the fields of human consciousness, spirituality, mysticism, health, energy medicine, and the science of medical intuition, says, “Ted is a landscape architect by day. By night, Ted is a Nature-Mystic, a man devoted to protecting Mother Nature.” Myss believes Ted “knows how the earth works and how it speaks to us in countless ways.” As one of her advanced students, Ted has traveled the world studying with Myss. Fine Homes of Western North Carolina had the opportunity to sit down with Ted and talk about his understanding of what constitutes a good landscape design and how he attunes to nature in his commercial and private home designs.
FHWNC: How did you first become interested in landscape design? TC: It started in childhood, and I would have to thank my parents for the gift of being allowed to be myself. During my summers as a child I remember a large dump truck full of sand being delivered to our back yard, followed two hours later by a load of 500 bricks. I played with my brother and friends, creating entire neighborhoods with streets and landscaped yards. We happily sculpted brick houses, walkways and driveways into the sand with our hands. Twigs and broken branches placed upright in the sand became village trees. With a garden hose, we made lakes and streams. It fascinated me to see the sand move and shift as water poured through our villages and undermined our structures. Houses were always giving away to an endless cycle of destruction and re-birth. This was how I began to see the earth from a different perspective. FHWNC: Tell me about your creative process when evaluating a home prior to developing your design. TC: I have spent more than 40 years working with land and landscape. It has been and continues to be my life’s calling. As my work has evolved over the past four decades I have become increasingly aware of the subtle energies that have guided me through the landscape design and installation process. If I am working with an existing home, my initial customer intake starts most often right at the kitchen sink. A great deal of time is spent looking out into the landscape, so it is important to understand which rooms and windows are a pivotal part of my client’s daily life. Eventually all appointments lead outdoors, where I begin to quickly identify what negatively impacts the land and landscape. Telephone poles, cell towers, public road systems all invade the sanctity of a private landscape arena. If possible, I try to sequester and isolate the utility aspect
of the property where you might find cars, garage doors, basketball hoops, trash, and disposal areas for instance. A landscape designer needs to be mindful of the intent of the architect of a home. If the front door is prominent, then give it some importance. Too many entrances into a home are confusing to a visitor. A well-designed landscape clearly defines which entrance should be used. Fortunately I can draw on literally hundreds of installations, so the design process takes shape in my mind as I walk the site and intuit these spaces. After moving through some of these initial observations, invariably I will begin to dowse the property and identify the locations of some of the subtle energies that impact the site. This is really a general overview at this point. A client profile is completed, and I will then set up another appointment to meet at a future date. Calen Rayne, a geomancer and dowser from Asheville who consults on sacred landscapes worldwide, works with me on site evaluations. Scientific discovery is still catching up to ancient wisdom, and Calen is standing at the crossroads of the two. Calen works with an internal mapping system he learned in the Himalayas, Winter 2016 | Fine Homes of WNC 37
called “genesis point vibrational radiesthesia. This technique enables us to identify a particular point at a site where we can connect with energetics of the land. This process is important because it enables one to access information from the land itself, and better discern what a particular property truly needs when creating an integral design.
One of the most important things to do with land and landscape is to design in such a way that is sincere to the site. The goal is to make it look like it has been this way for many years. In essence, the work needs to really belong there. Part of achieving this goal comes from engaging these techniques of subtle communication with that particular piece of land.
FHWNC: How important is it to enter into a direct conversation with a piece of land when creating your designs?
FHWNC: Have you discovered any similarities between landscapes of Maine and North Carolina?
TC: Land and landscape speak to all of us, but we have to listen. The land informs us if we listen. For many years now I have been communicating with the land. As with any profession, we become a composite of our experiences as the years unfold. We bring this knowledge with us and are quick and nimble in response to working out complex issues as the design process unfolds. But really, the answers come to us twofold, because we are also able to receive direction from the invisible world.
TC: Like Maine, North Carolina has both mountain and ocean view properties. No matter the view you are trying to preserve, whether it is lake, ocean or mountain, the treatment is relatively the same. Our eye has what is called peripheral vision. In other words, we see a lot of what is out there. When you creatively place plant material or build structures in a way that obstructs the peripheral view, you magnify and actually frame the view of the intended landscape.
38 Fine Homes of WNC | Winter 2016
Another way to do this is to create a “ha ha”. This was done many times by the 18th century European landscape architect Capability Brown. Essentially you cleanly and neatly cut the grade with a retaining wall. This in effect creates an optical illusion, mysteriously bringing the visually intended landscape closer to you. A common and familiar application in our modern landscape is the “endless” swimming pool. The water appears to move off into infinity as it draws the vista beyond closer to you. FHWNC: Having toured the Biltmore Estate and Asheville area to view various landscape designs, what do you make of plant materials available here? TC: I am really impressed and astounded with the vast diversity of plant material available for use in the local landscape. In my 40 years of installing primarily residential landscaping, I have had the good fortune to work in several states from Maine to Florida to Texas. As I surveyed the local landscape in Asheville, I noticed southern plant favorites such as nandina, Indian hawthorn and crepe myrtle growing right alongside some of our favorite northeast conifers. I owned and operated a landscaping company in Dallas Texas for five years, and never in my wildest dreams could I have grown any of my Maine plant favorites there. In all my travels I must say I have never come across such a vast array of plant material as that in the Asheville area. With such an abundance of diverse plant materials available, I look forward to possibly working with potential clients here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. FHWNC: I understand you are working on a large commercial project in Maine that includes an orchard and hops fields for use in craft beers. Sounds like a project one might see here in Asheville.
TC: I live in an area near Portland, Maine that is also heavily dependent on the tourism industry. My commercial project involves a jointly owned collection of inns, restaurants and bars located in the Kennebunks (namely Kennebunk and Kennebunkport). Lucky Dog Farm is a 28 acre rural farmland setting where Tim Harrington, one of the principals of Kennebunkport Resort Collection, is setting up a place where the various restaurants they own can draw food from their very own farm. The vision is to create a farm aesthetic that will attract people for special events and celebrations. This project will include an orchard in the round sporting a variety of apple and pear trees, a large labyrinth for weddings and special events, and one hops field with another in the making. The farm is evolving, and will soon have a Winter 2016 | Fine Homes of WNC 39
Lawns have always been quite boring in my world of ornamental horticulture. In working with clients, I try to design using minimal lawn. Native plant material is a favorite in the perimeter landscape. This intentional application of native plants attracts bees, butterflies, birds and a variety of wildlife. From strictly an aesthetic point of view there seems to be a lack of sensitivity to elements that detract from a natural setting. The utility aspect of the landscape (driveway, cars, garbage cans, basketball hoops, etc.) needs to be minimized. Many times through creative thought and the use of plant material in the right locations, one can really help reduce the negative blemish in the suburban landscape. Often times I design the driveway, which greatly helps with these concerns. There are subtle energies present in land and landscape that need to be honored and called out. Understanding the energetics of your landscape brings a whole new meaning to your understanding and connection to the natural world right outside your home. When you call out a space, it begins to be a destination in the landscape and take on a special presence it never had before. In a sense, your landscape has a re-birth – a new beginning as you see it through a different lens. This is where an ability to incorporate information derived from ancient disciplines such as geomancy and dowsing come in to play. plethora of vegetables, herbs and fruits that will provide a locally grown food source for the Collection’s restaurants. FHWNC: What do you see as the future of landscape design? TC: It is clear to me and to many others in this country that we can no longer develop land in the same manner we have been doing for the past hundred years. Our entire relationship to our land must change. At a time when climate change is so much on the forefront, we need a diverse polyculture to assist in moving through unfavorable weather conditions. A healthy ecoculture is one that supports abundant diversity. 40 Fine Homes of WNC | Winter 2016
FHWNC: One last question, Ted. How would you describe your creative intent? TC: Having traveled the world extensively, I incorporate components from many cultures in my landscape designs. Above all my intent is to help create sacred space in people’s homes and yards, and teach them how to see and hear how the earth speaks to them. 40 years of preserving Asheville landmarks By Colleen Watson What would the city of Asheville look like without the Preservation Society? While we can’t really answer that question, we can state emphatically that the face of Asheville continues to look as it does because the Preservation Society has been working for four decades to keep it active, interesting and historically significant. In 2016, the Preservation Society of Asheville & Buncombe County (PSABC) will celebrate its 40th anniversary. We are fortunate to have such a vibrant organization on our side. Working for the people of Asheville and the surrounding county, the PSABC is entrusted with preserving our community’s history, but of equal importance, its identity. It was in the early 19th century when historic preservation efforts began in the US. The country was beginning to create a national identity, and so initially, the focus of preservation was on properties of national significance and those associated with great 46 Fine Homes of WNC | Winter 2016
American leaders. In the early 20th century, concepts of what should be preserved expanded to other areas. The National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) was passed in 1966 as a result of the massive urban renewal of that time period brought about by our improved economy. The NHPA helped provide an important framework for preservation and focused more specifically on actions that impacted historic properties. To better understand how Asheville made it through the “destructive construction” period of the 1950s and ‘60s, we need to go a bit further back in time. When the Great Depression struck in 1930, the city experienced financial ruin with Asheville having the highest per capita debt in the nation. But Asheville’s leaders refused to accept bankruptcy as an option, choosing instead to pay what it owed. Asheville’s growth came to a halt as the city struggled for decades to pay its debts. So, during the period of extensive urban renewal, Asheville could not participate to the degree most other cities were engaged. Funding was simply not available and so in the downtown area,

the buildings were not replaced with more modern structures. Downtown Asheville and most of its surrounding neighborhoods had escaped and our historic buildings were still standing when the PSABC was founded in 1976 and the value of historic structures was more clearly seen and understood. When the debts were finally repaid, a plan was developed to revitalize the downtown area. The controversial plan to build a shopping mall and in the process, demolish 11 blocks in the heart of downtown was under discussion for several years before a public referendum defeated the project. While the revitalization debate was going on, the PSABC was also engaged in attempting to save two historic houses in Montford, the Coleman House and the Gudger House. The PSABC was able to save the Gudger House, and thus began its efforts to revitalize Asheville’s many historic buildings. Working alongside the Historic Resources Commission of Asheville, local historic districts were specified and ordinances adopted to protect the buildings and landscape of these areas. It’s important to point out that as preservationists, the PSABC is not at all opposed to change, in fact, change for change sake is ill conceived. Planned and thoughtful change is what respects history, heritage and culture while allowing for appropriate growth. And so today, we can embrace and celebrate a skyline reminiscent of the 1920s that includes beautiful architectural style buildings of Art Deco, Queen Anne, Gothic Revival and others unique to Asheville. Historic architecture is the tangible connection to the past, and more than any other element made by human hands, historic buildings differentiate one community from another. No other city can duplicate our historic resources, which says much about what we find important. It speaks of our commitment to ourselves when we see the many cultural activities located in historic buildings in and around Asheville’s downtown.
As we consider the impact of preservation, we need to look beyond the outward appearance of buildings to the more esoteric. The face of preservation connects its residents more deeply to quality of life and a truer sense of who we are as a community. People see Asheville’s thriving downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods and see a strong and healthy city. Historic preservation helps to define us and in effect makes us who we are. Our more active and lively downtown helps increase safety and diversity. One could say that Asheville’s historic downtown is a museum with sidewalks, the main attraction that everything else (arts, culture, cuisine) is built upon. The livability of our community includes the diversity of its people, drawing tourists and those looking to relocate. Many retirees are downsizing and choosing urban lifestyles for great dining, arts and culture, and convenience. This not only increases economic development, but those relocating generally have an interest in culture, enjoying walkable streets, entertainment venues, and other aspects commonly associated with preservation. As we reflect on the future, it begs the question, “Where will we go from here?” We are clearly a community who understands and respects the importance of historic preservation. It’s up to the people of Asheville working closely with the Preservation Society of Asheville & Buncombe County to continue to maintain the quality of life so prevalent in our beautiful city and surrounding area. As we continue to value the past and the historic significance of this great city, we will continue to grow and thrive, while maintaining the beauty and charm that makes Asheville what it is … a city full of energy, creativity and respect for its history. For more information on preservation in Asheville, or to become a member, contact the Preservation Society of Asheville & Buncombe County at psabc.org or call (828) 254-2343. Welcome Home:
Feng Shui design & your home’s entrance By Jini Rayne The front entrance of your home is the face you present to the rest of the world. Having the most opportune face gives you an advantage in much the same way that an attractive appearance eases one’s interactions with others on a social level. Each of us has our own idea of what constitutes curb appeal, but feng shui has some specific ideas of what is and is not beneficial in the approach to a home. In addition to a yard which is maintained in good order, with trees and plants healthy and well pruned, it is desirable to have an easy, obvious, and clean approach to the home with the front door being clearly visible. In feng shui, the front door is seen as the “mouth of the chi”, the portal through which all good energy and opportunities enter. Therefore, a door on the front of the house that is attractive, larger than any side or back door, and in proportion to the rest of the house is vital as it makes it easy for the chi to If there is a hidden entrance on the side or back of the house so that finding the entrance is confusing for visitors (and chi), and it makes it difficult to see who is approaching, then landscape with a pathway, plantings, and even lighting to draw visitors to the main entrance. You could also use a strategically placed convex mirror so that you can see who is approaching from your front door or window. The front door being lower than street level is seen as negative in feng shui. It means that you must always climb up in order to go out into the world. Over a period of time it may become more and more difficult to leave home. People who live in houses lower than street level are typically less successful than those who live at, or slightly above, street level. Here in the mountains, houses with the entrance below street level )LQH +RPHV RI :1& _ :LQWHU
are fairly commonplace. To offset this circumstance, plant tall bushes or plants with upward thrusting branches or leaves on either side of the front door to raise the chi. Also have a good light by the front door. It is even better to have lights that follow the pathway all the way to the street to help lift the energy. If the entrance to a house faces oncoming traffic as found at a “T” intersection, the house is pounded with oncoming energy. The degree of the problem depends on how busy the street is, but it is always a negative circumstance. Often you can use a hedge or a strategically placed tree to block the oncoming rush of energy. Sometimes you might also want to use a mirror or brass door knocker or other shiny decorating device to reflect the energy away from your house. On the other hand, a home that is hidden from view because of excessive vegetation is also a feng shui no-no. The vegetation is coming between you and the world, blocking out your incoming energy and opportunities. Unless you wish to be hiding from the world or in retreat for this period in your life, trim the bushes, tangles or trees. Make sure that you can see out of your windows, and that the pathway to your house is not obstructed. There are multiple symbolic meanings to the front door in feng shui. Some of these are: interaction and relationship with the world, inner and outer world, first and last impression, ability to get in and out of situations, flow and opportunity, safety and security, entry, life, career, closure, voice of the adults, and the house itself. Taking hold of the front doorknob to
open the door is like shaking hands with the house, so it is important to have good quality, substantial hardware on your front door. Because the door is so fundamental to feng shui, and has so many symbolic meanings, it is vital that it be kept in good repair. If the front door scrapes, it is symbolic of frustration or blocked energy. If it is hard to open, one is likely to experience career problems. If it is hard to close, there will be difficulty getting paid or completing tasks. Squeaks indicate fears and worries. If it does not fit properly in the frame, life may seem unbalanced or “off”. A broken window or screen indicates decaying life energy. A loose or wobbly knob makes for instability. If the door swings open or shut by itself, one will experience an unstable life. Chipping paint shows decaying or depressed chi. In general, because that you will have to work harder to make the things you desire happen, and that opportunities will be hard to find. It is a good idea to fix the front door so that it works easily. It is also a good idea to use it every day even if it is just to go out to get the mail or walk the dog. A summary of the ideal feng shui attributes of the front door includes it being: bright and clear; well lit and luminous; in balance to the house; easy to approach, free, open, and clear; obvious; positive and cheerful; in good condition; well functioning; and unblocked. Since it is so important in feng shui, drawing positive attention to the front door with good lighting, a colorful door, seasonal flowers or decorations and perhaps a wind chime or fountain can :LQWHU _ )LQH +RPHV RI :1&
The front door is where energy and opportunity enter your life; so one that is hard to use means you will tend to have difficulty in your life. pay dividends in bringing good fortune for the whole family. Just as the front door is the gateway to your home, the driveway is the entrance to your property, the “mouth of the chi for the whole property. As such, you want to invite optimal amounts of healthy chi onto your site. It is advantageous when your driveway gently curves or meanders toward your house. It should be visible as you look out the front of your house and be of uniform width for most of its length. It is fine to have a wider spot for turning around or parking. A circle at the end of the driveway is considered to be very auspicious. A driveway that comes straight in toward the house causes some of the same problems that the street of a “T intersection causes: excessive energy pounding at the house. If it comes straight in toward the front door, use a bagua mirror, shiny door knocker, or other similar decorating devise to reflect some of the excess energy away. If it is not aimed at the door but merely comes straight into the property, give it the illusion of curving by staggering plantings on either side of the driveway. If the driveway faces oncoming traffic, seeming to be an extension of the street at a “T intersection, too much energy will be rushing into your driveway.
Reflect some of it back toward the source by using a strategically placed mirror or other shiny object. A driveway of uneven width chokes the flow of chi in the narrow areas, much like having to merge two lanes into one often causes traffic jams. If it is possible to even it out, do so. If not, make the edges appear to be even by landscaping beds of plantings on one or both sides to make a uniform width. If it narrows toward the street, it chokes off or limits some of your opportunities as you go out into the world. Remove the restriction if at all possible. Just as a front door below street level makes it more difficult over a period of time to get up the energy to go out into the world, a driveway that goes downward from the street to the house is seen as problematic in feng shui. Lighting that goes all the way from the base to the entry point of the driveway helps the energy climb back up, although it won’t do much on a practical level on the few icy winter days here in the mountains. Sometimes it is nice to have an excuse to take a day off! These are some of the main issues a person looking at a property through feng shui eyes would consider in evaluating the curb appeal and suitability of a home. You can keep them in mind as you evaluate a prospective property, or seek to improve your present home to bring optimal energy to your life.
