The Grove Arcade was the grand dream of E.W. Grove, a self-made millionaire who moved to Asheville in 1910. By 1915, Grove had completed the Grove Park Inn and become involved in other civic projects. Grove understood that a successful city needed a vibrant downtown. In the early 1920's, he began plans to build an elegant new building to enliven the downtown of the city he had come to love. He conceived of the Arcade as "the most elegant building in America" and as a new kind of retail center. Architect Charles N. Parker designed the Arcade, which was originally more on page 12

FINE HOMES of Western North Carolina 11

envisioned as a 5-story base with a 14-story tower, filled with shops, offices, and living spaces. Grove died in 1927, two years before the building was completed. Only the base was built, yet at 269,000 square-feet, it was by far, the largest building in the region. When the Arcade opened in 1929, it quickly became home to a fine collection of local shops and services. Tenants included candy and cigar stores, a haberdashery, a public stenography office, fruit stands, millinery shops, beauty parlors and barbershops, a photography center, bookstalls and specialty groceries. Offices filled the upper floors. For 13 years, the Arcade was the center of commercial and civic life in Western North Carolina. The Arcade was closed when the Federal Government took over the building as part of the effort to win World War II. Officials chose the building because it was large and located in a safe, remote place Following the war, the Arcade continued under Federal ownership and eventually became the headquarters for the National Climatic Data Center. 12 FINE HOMES of Western North Carolina

The Grove Arcade was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in thge 1980s. In response to public demand that the Arcade’s historic architecture remain intact and the building be returned to its original function, a Mayor’s Task Force was established in 1985. In the years that followed, more than a dozen private developers considered renovating the building. Eventually a group of community leaders and concerned citizens formed the Grove Arcade Public Market Foundation. This not-for-profit had the mission of restoring the Grove Arcade to its original form and function. In 1997, the City of Asheville acquired title to the building under the National Monument Act and signed a 198 year lease with the Foundation. Since then, the Foundation has seen to the restoration of the Grove Arcade Building and its spirit. The restored Grove Arcade opened in late 2002 and includes shops, restaurants, offices and 42 luxury apartments.

Champion Hills Club celebrates 25 years No living designer has more credits on Golf Digest's list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses. Fazio has witnessed firsthand the ebbs and flows of the golf industry.

Through his 40 years in golf course design, Tom Fazio has been recognized for creating award-winning courses around the world.

"It is capitalism 101" said Fazio. "The growth spirt in golf from 19922005 was just as much about real estate as it was about golf. During the 13-year period, the industry added 3,000 golf courses, a number that ultimately exceeded demand. Just as the real estate is slowly healing, the golf industry is slowly healing." Fazio's primer for a successful community Tom Fazio believes there are eight important criteria to analyze before joining a golf community. A strong initial developer, quality golf, a central location, numerous churches and banks, access to healthcare, strong non-profits, a convenient airport, and a dedicated Board of Directors all play a role in the vitality of a club. Fazio distinguishes between the word club and community. "In my mind, club refers to the physical amenities, community refers to the people," said Fazio. "When a strong initial developer launches a club, the infrastructure is built to high standards and ages well," said Fazio. "Down the line, when the club is transitioned over to the members, the club is in every bit as good shape, sometimes better shape, than when it held its grand opening."

16 FINE HOMES of Western North Carolina

A central location is key. "We raised our family in Hendersonville. The possibility of driving 45 minutes to get to a grocery store was not an option," critiqued Fazio. "While removed from downtown, Champion Hills is only a 10 minute drive to Main Street Hendersonville." Fazio also advises to research accessibility of churches, banks, and healthcare. "A town with a complete array of services shows people are serious about living there. Unfortunately, we can't cheat father time. As we get older, health care becomes more and more important. It is comforting to know Hendersonville is served by Pardee Hospital and Mission Hospital, a regional medical center close by." "We all want the next generation to excel. A strong school system guarantees our kids have a fighting chance in the ever more competitive business world," said Fazio. "For those families who need a little extra help, healthy non-profits are a lifeline. This year marks another important anniversary in Hendersonville. Twenty years ago, my wife and I founded the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County, one of the premier non-profit charities in the state." Finally, a strong Board insures the stability of a community will endure. "Members must place trust in their elected Board of Directors," advised Fazio. "The destiny of the club is in their hands. At Champion Hills, the hierarchy of control is clearly defined. This creates strong oversight and crisp management decisions." As a result, even during the recent recession, the community remained debt-free and the member-owned club maintained a healthy financial reserve. In fact, in 2010, the club expanded the already extensive amenities with new dining options, renovation of the clubhouse and expansion of the fitness center. "It does not surprise me Champion Hills is celebrating its 25th anniversary year, as a successful, well-run member club. It has all the pieces of the puzzle." said Fazio. "I'm proud to call it my summer course."

“

It does not surprise me Champion Hills is celebrating its 25th anniversary year, as a successful, well-run member club. --Tom Fazio

“

Fazio can't underscore the importance of quality golf. "I might be a bit biased since I designed the course at Champion Hills," smiled Fazio. "But, the fact is, a quality golf experience drives membership. The course is the core amenity everyone focuses on."

The Sign of Excellence

The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge Visitors to Lake Lure in Western North Carolina have long appreciated the natural beauty of the area. The Hickory Nut Gorge where Lake Lure sits among the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is home to amazing vistas and an environment of extraordinary biodiversity. Chimney Rock State Park attracts visitors from all over the world to enjoy hiking its trails. Now visitors can enjoy a new phenomenon, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, a vision that has come to life just this year.

28 FINE HOMES of Western North Carolina

The gardens have welcomed visitors since April, but the official Grand Opening and Dedication of the bridge is scheduled for Saturday, October 19. Scheduled activities for that day include guided tours of the gardens with docents, as well as exhibits and items for sale from the Lake Lure Artists Club in an adjacent shaded grove. Beginning at 4:30 that afternoon, ceremonies will include remarks from Peter Loewer, Vice President of the Botanical Gardens at Asheville. A scavenger hunt is planned for children, as well as music and light refreshments. The traditional ribbon-cutting will feature a garland of flowers. As dusk approaches, the lights, including bridge lamps reminiscent of those originally on the bridge in 1925 will illuminate the gardens. As he tells the story, Bill Miller was "dragged as a child" to the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. Created in 1929 by a group of determined women on an old trolley bridge spanning the Deerfield River, the Bridge of Flowers remained in Miller's mind, a vivid memory of walking across a river between flower beds. Its unique attraction lingered in his thoughts for decades. Now retired in Lake Lure, Miller remembered the unique beauty of that bridge when the 1925 highway bridge over the Rocky Broad River was replaced and decommissioned in 2011. As a member of the Lake Lure Parks and Recreation Board, Miller saw the possibility to turn the old bridge into a garden reminiscent of the one from his childhood visits. Though originally scheduled for demolition, at Miller's urging the old triple-arch bridge over the Rocky Broad was instead deeded to the Town of Lake Lure. Miller spread the word about his idea and brought together like-minded residents of the Hickory Nut Gorge. The enthusiastic group formed the non-profit Friends of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge with a mission to create a "Gateway to Somewhere Beautiful."

The development of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is ongoing, with a focus on native plants & a mission to educate. They began raising funds for the project even as they started learning how to go about the work. Consideration had to be given to preservation of the bridge structure itself, as well as protection of the trout stream that flows beneath it. The group hired landscape architects to design a plan for gardens that would stretch more than 350 feet with approaches from both ends of the 155-foot bridge surface. The bridge surface had to be smoothed to allow a protective surface to be applied. Volunteers, with help and advice from local engineers, planned and installed irrigation and electrical infrastructure. Local artisans created raised garden beds on the bridge surface, faced with natural stone to complement the graceful balustrades that line the bridge. A gently curving path of pavers was created through the flower beds, continuing the Town of Lake Lure walkway. The development of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is ongoing. With a focus on native plants and a mission to educate, every effort is made to help visitors identify the plants they are seeing. The volunteer garden committee not only works to keep the beds watered, fertilized and mulched, but manages seasonal changes needed to keep the gardens thriving throughout the year. The East Gardens include a Founders Circle and a dry creek bed as well as split rail fences and a hand-crafted locust bench where visitors can sit to enjoy a view of the river flowing below. Unique plants are here, too, including the Franklin Tree, also called the "lost camellia." more on page 30

FINE HOMES of Western North Carolina 29

Flowering Bridge ... An American native plant lost completely from the wild in 1803, this plant was saved by a botanist father and son team, the Bartrams, who named it for their friend Benjamin Franklin and saved it as a cultivated plant. Also visible in the East Gardens are the antique gates that support the beautiful Lake Lure Flowering Bridge sign made by a local iron artisan. Standing tall over the gardens is an historic lamppost that once stood in front of the old Lake Lure School. This lamppost, like many features of the gardens, was donated by a local resident. On the bridge itself, twelve garden beds delight visitors with their individual themes. The herb garden includes medicinal, culinary, fragrant and ornamental plants. One bed is dedicated the Lake Lure Classical Academy, featuring their mascot, the Raptor, and plants chosen by the students, including some that are carnivorous. There are two beds that feature plants selected since 1982 by the North Carolina Botanical Society as North Carolina Wildflowers of the year. There are also garden beds that feature roses, prairie plants, succulents, fragrants, tropicals and plants that attract birds and butterflies. Throughout these beds are decorative items placed to enhance the viewing experience, most donated by area residents. The diversity of these gardens reflects the accommodating climate of the area which is part of a thermal belt, a mountainside zone where frost or freezing temperatures are less likely to occur than they are at either higher or lower elevations. Still in development are the gardens at the west approach to the bridge. As funds become available, the pathway will extend through this area to nearby Boys Camp Road. Early planning suggests featuring more native plants in this area. As progress continues with the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, the attraction is drawing not just visitors from near and far, but also entrepreneurial ventures. Already serving customers nearby is the recently opened Carolina Moon coffee shop located in the Pinnacle Sotheby's Realty building. The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge has been recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. W.O. and Julia Wolfe bought the house in 1906. It came with 19 boarders paying $8 a week. In 1883 a small home was built at 48 Spruce Street on a 95 x 190' lot. Built by a leading private banker, Erwin Sluder, it was a wedding present for his daughter and son-in-law, Cordelia and W. W. Barnard. When the home was completed, it went through various owners. The house was sold to J.H Herring for $3,600 on April 1, 1884. Then the Barnard’s purchased the house back on March 14, 1885 for $3,390. The house was sold again on July 13, 1889 to a Mrs. Alice Johnston Reynolds for $7,500, who would be the first to open the house as a business. During this time between 1883 and 1889, the house had gone through a few expansions and updates. By the time Mrs. Reynolds purchased the house, it was electrified and plumbed with running water. Under Mrs. Reynolds ownership, the house at 48 Spruce Street was known as "The Reynolds' boarding house". It had glowing advertisements in local and tourist information booklets and was a successful business until Mrs. Reynolds' death in July 1900. The house was then purchased by a couple from Kentucky, Reverend Thomas M. Myers and his wife Mary. The Myers renamed the boarding house, "Old Kentucky Home" and began a six year ownership of the business. During his ownership, the Old Kentucky Home was operated by several proprietors, until it was sold to Mrs. Julia 38 FINE HOMES of Western North Carolina

Wolfe in 1906. Thomas Wolfe later drew the Reverend Myer's portrait as the "Reverend Wellington Hodge" in Look Homeward, Angel. After viewing a few other possible boarding houses in town, Mrs. Wolfe heard that the Old Kentucky home was for sale. Mrs. Wolfe appreciated the fact it was only a block from the family home and, after a walk through with Mrs. Myers, approached her husband about the purchase. W.O. Wolfe aligned to his wife’s business desire and possibly with some relief, agreed and told the real estate agent, Purchased by W.O. and Julia Wolfe on August 30, 1906, the boarding house came with 19 boarders, paying $8.00 a week, and the name Old Kentucky Home. During the negotiations, Reverend Myers asked that the business keep the name in honor of his home state. Other than a few brief times when Julia Wolfe subleased the house, the boarding house at 48 Spruce Street was known as the Old Kentucky Home. The purchase of the boarding house did more than bring in income for the family; it also created an irrevocable split in the family. Mrs. Wolfe found it difficult to run her business from the family home on Woodfin Street and moved into her boarding house, bringing her youngest, Tom, to live with her amongst the boarders. For over a decade the family moved between the two residences. The daughters

stayed mainly at the family home with their father, while the sons would shift back and forth between the two homes. Although a divide within the life of the family, the Old Kentucky Home did hold many fond memories as well. Wolfe would fondly remember the family and boarders gathering around the piano in the parlor while his sister Mabel would play. W.O. would entertain the boarders and family with long rhetoric and literature passages of Shakespeare, Tennyson, and others from memory. The boarding house even served as a back drop for important family life events, like the weddings of the daughters of Effie in 1908 and Mabel in 1916. But not all the family events in the boarding house were positive. The boarding house is also where TomĂs brother, Ben, died in 1918 and his father died in 1922. Ten years after Julia Wolfe's purchase, the boarding house remained practically the same in appearance, but in 1916 she undertook a sizeable expansion in order to accommodate a more boarders and thus, earn more money. During the expansion, Mrs. Wolfe added a large sun-parlor, extended the dining room, included a small family dining room, and included two sleeping porches upstairs, along with bathrooms, a water closet, and bedrooms of all sizes.

Tom remembered the extent his mother took to keep the expansion as economical as possible in his novel Look Homeward, Angel. "The construction was after her own plans, and of the cheapest material: it never lost the smell of raw wood, cheap varnish, and flimsy rough plastering, but she had added eight or ten rooms at a cost of only $3,000." -Look Homeward, Angel Since 1916, the appearance of the house has changed little, except for the occasional change in color. Wolfe described the boarding house as a "dirty yellow" in his novel and that was most likely accurate during the time he spent in the house. In a 1921 letter to his son, W.O. wrote of a recent change in appearance when the house was painted cream with chocolate trim. By 1950, the house was painted white, possibly painted that color as early as the 1930’s. Since its construction in 1883, the house at 48 Spruce Street changed like the city around it; growing to accommodate the tourism trade and expansion of Asheville. The happiness and grief within its walls inspired one of Americans greatest literary authors and reflects the history of family and city in the early 20th century.
