Art and the Artistic Process By Calen Rayne
Think of works of art as a visual representation of energy. Asheville has increasingly become a destination for art collectors. Our area has a number of world class artists creating unique creative works in a variety of disciplines, including over two hundred artists working in River Arts District studios. For some visitors, being immersed in works of art is a near religious experience. With heart and mind open, an artist can make use of works of art to enable his or her audience to enter a spiritual plane of consciousness and commune with whatever one’s interpretation of God or Spirit or Wisdom is. Theologian Matthew Fox sees wisdom and creativity as inseparable. Wisdom and creativity go together according to our deepest spiritual traditions. Knowledge in and of itself produces neither creativity nor wisdom. Wisdom has to do with our relationship to the whole, to the cosmos, to nature, to both the feminine and masculine powers of nature. Fox believes “It is our creativity itself that lies at the essence of our humanity.” 58 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2017
He continues, “Creativity may be the nearest one-word definition we possess for the essence of our humanity, for the true meaning of ‘soul’.” As artists, we must possess a hopeful, persevering and energetic disposition. Every time we pray or meditate or find our spiritual center, we engage in a renaissance of the mystery of creativity, commanding us to join a global community of spiritually creative people. This community of artists endeavors to produce works of art that would leave a record that not only were they here, but they made a difference with the artistic works created. There is a spiritual energy flowing from the beginning of the beginning, and mystic artist Alex Grey, who has shared his creative genius with Asheville audiences, believes “we are expressions of this spiritual energy.” We need to see ourselves as vehicles of compassion and relate to this great community of the universe in a way that is a reflection of that infinite compassion.
Artists need to unveil their true artistic nature, and there discover a wonderful source of wisdom, compassion, and power to bring their artistic vision to bear on our world. Grey offers following advice to artists: “If one wishes to be an artist, and loves his or her work, an amazing reservoir of creativity will open its doors. Someone once asked rethink the way they see the world and open up to a more loving attitude toward the web of life.” George Washington Carver was once asked how he discovered so many different uses for the peanut. “Whatever you love opens its secrets to you,” the great inventor replied. Once the secrets are opened to us, Alex Grey tells us to “transcend our rational, conceptual minds and get ready to transcend the great mystery.” One needs to have confidence in one’s own spirituality and artistic ability to share that “great mystery” in a unique, meaningful way. One should not try to replicate the artistic vision or works of others, but rather trust their own inner wisdom for inspiration. The mind must be empty and open when approaching a blank canvas. Grey reminds us that in our creative process, “we are receiving information on a scale beyond our ability to process.” There may be some “plan” as to what is about to unfold in the creative process, but there is no predicting what will happen once brush meets canvas. Grey says that for the artist, “the creative act must be in alignment with their soul’s mission,” and part of that mission is to “align your creativity with a spiritual source and receive creative energies from a higher source.” If one is passionate about their work, and is completely open to receiving “the secrets” from these higher realms, the ensuing process will be both fresh and spontaneous. Matthew Fox offers the following reflection of Aquinas on the creative process bringing forth the Holy Spirit, “The same Spirit who hovered over the waters at the beginning of creation hovers over the mind of an artist at work.” To generate works of art, an artist must focus on his or her creative expectation for their work. This is often a meditative process. Artistic expression and meditation practice are similar in many respects. a journey into the unknown, hoping to create an original expression of their being, while risking that they may produce a work of art similar to works of others they have seen or studied. A person who sits in meditation, while trying to create mind space for original thoughts, could end up pondering the words of one of his teachers or someone he has studied.

The artist, like the person who meditates, must try to transcend their ordinary “regular reality” consciousness to explore the depths of creativity and compassion. One needs to remove oneself from the ordinary, mundane thinking process and enter a spiritual realm in which one communes with the creative visionary thinking process. Often this is only possible through a meditative practice, or an artistic endeavor. The process itself is not the end product, but rather a means by which the artist can change the mind’s ability to pursue their creative consciousness, and see a different reality, one that they can transfer to some form that can be shared with their audience, and a form that moves that audience toward a more compassionate vision.
The artist who is successful in opening to the mystery inherent in each moment will manifest a transformation of understanding that will then free the energy of compassion within. Compassion will be the natural product of an artistic expression born of the depths of the soul of the artist, where the artist is in touch not only with his own, innate spirituality, but the spirituality inherent in other people, and the rest of the Universe. Hildegard of Bingen reminds us, “There is wisdom in all creative works.” How to create artistic expressions that are an embodiment of this wisdom is the greatest challenge faced by an artist. Matthew Fox believes this blend is essential to commune with one another through our artistic endeavors. Wisdom and compassion; compassion and wisdom: wouldn’t such energy revitalize civilization, forge new links with world cultural traditions, create gentler and more dialectical relationships to earth, to body, to pleasure, to work, to the artist within and among us? An artist cannot rush the process of creating meaningful works. An artistic work may be years in the making, but length of time to create an artistic expression drawn from the inner depths of the soul that enables others to experience a deepening of their own spirituality, as well as a sense of the love and compassion needed to produce such a work, is unimportant. Many search for the path to mental and emotional equilibrium, a balance of wisdom and compassion. Our goal should be clear, to create and maintain a constant relationship with the “mystery of the now,” where one 62 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2017
might experience a communion with compassion. If an artist wishes to be in communion with the mystery, or Spirit, one of the best ways to do so is through a meditation practice. From the core of mystery, the artist realizes, in the words of Alex Grey, that “art is a reflection of universal consciousness” and that we are “the same ocean of pranic energy.” Grey speaks of the “one layer of sacred interconnectedness” that births a “void clear light from which everything emerges.” This is the clear light from which our artistic vision is translated to creative works in our medium of choice. We simply need to unveil that which has been birthed in our creative consciousness. A wonderful painting, as with any artistic work, is the result of the feeling in your fingers. If you have the feeling of the thickness of the paint in your brush, the painting is already there before you paint. When you dip your brush into the paint you already know the results, or else you cannot paint. So before you do something, “being” is there, the result is there. It is important that the artist arrive at a balance with their
creative expressions, a blend of wisdom and compassion, one might say. For regardless of the intent of the artist, the purpose must be for an artistic expression to move his or her audience, and our world, toward compassion. This, too, is a precursor to a spiritual transformation for
both artist and audience. The artist whose purpose is to produce an expression born of compassion and wisdom that will lead others on toward that same realization is truly enlightened. Their work becomes a teaching tool, like any good meditation Fall 2017 | Fine Homes & Design 63
teaching. Think of works of art as a visual representation of energy. A painting may serve as a conduit for life-force energy. It is most important that the artist is to bring to his audience an awareness of the interconnectedness of everything in our cosmos, and to bring them to an awareness of the compassion that fills our universe. If an artist can realize this goal, he or she has the ability to rediscover religious mysticism, discover great wonder, and unveil incredible mystery on a moment by moment basis. Artists must move toward a sense of wholeness where their work incorporates energies that support and sustain our spiritual journeys. When an artist approaches a blank canvas, he or she draws from imagination, mystery, Spirit, or a myriad of other inspirations to “speak to the soul of humanity” as Alex Grey says. Grey believes that “art we view and make can transform us.” He says the artist must draw from the “eye of the intellect and the “eye of the spirit,” and that

“the artist needs to open as many eyes as possible when working.” And from what boundless source is the artist to draw his or her inspiration? Grey offers the following observation from Kandinsky in his book, Sacred Mirrors: “The artist must not only train his eye but also his soul, so that it can weigh colors in its own scale and thus become a determinant in artistic creation.” Master Seppo was one of the great masters of Zen Buddhism who lived around 850 c.e. in China. Mapping the Energy of Your Home by Jini Rayne
In the last issue, we discussed some basic feng shui concepts. Please refer to that article on the website at: http://www.finehomesofwnc.com/single-post/2017/07/14/ Foundations-of-Feng-Shui - for a discussion of chi and how it flows, the importance of symbols in one’s environment, as well as other basic tenets of the Chinese view of mankind’s relationship with our universe. Placement and flow within the bagua is another important tool in determining and adjusting the feng shui of any habitat. The bagua, like any mandala or map, is a picture diagram of relationship. Getting the right balance and arrangement in the bagua of your home or office aligns you with a larger energy resonance pattern. The bagua can be used on both macro and micro levels. It can be used as a template to determine optimal arrangement on a piece of property or lot, throughout the whole house, within an individual room, or even on a desk top or bed. Generally, the more time you spend in a given environment, the more 72 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2017
impact it has on you. Therefore, adjustments made to your bedroom or office are likely to be more effective than those made in the guest bedroom or another room where you spend little time. The base line of the bagua is always situated in alignment with the wall which contains the architectural front door of a home or business. Even if a side or back entrance is used more often, the bagua for the whole building is aligned with the intended front door. This is the “mouth of the ch’i”, where energy comes into the space. The bagua is then elongated or compacted to fit within the available space, each of the three guas on a side governing one third of the available space. Think of drawing a tic-tac-toe grid over your space with the bottom of the grid on that base line of the bagua established on the wall with the front door. continued on page 74

Each room within a structure may also be analyzed independently by aligning the base of the bagua with the wall containing the main entrance to the room, regardless of its particular location within the structure. If a building has many angles or is very complex, you may wish to apply the bagua to each room in this manner rather than to the whole structure. A complex building may require a feng shui expert to determine how the bagua applies to the whole. A projection from a structure creates an enhancement if it is less than one half the width or depth of the building. Missing areas are created when the projection is equal to or greater than the width or depth of the building. When in doubt about whether there is a missing area or an enhancement, check the history of the building and its inhabitants for a good indication of the effect that the projection has had. An “L” or “U” shaped house can lead to large areas being outside of the bagua. This is often a problem, especially if the kitchen or a bedroom is outside the bagua. In this instance, the occupant may often eat or sleep away from home, leading to a less cohesive family life. If a projection is used as a home office, however, it may enable the office occupant to keep work in its place in the office, leading to a healthy separation of work from family life. The midpoint of a structure is the halfway point between the front and the back. Rooms situated behind this midpoint are in a more secure position than rooms at the front of the building. The farther back and the higher up, the more secure and therefore commanding the location. This is why the CEO’s office is usually in a back corner on the highest floor. The Commanding Position in a room is the one that is diagonally back farthest from the door. Placing one’s bed, desk or chair in this position with a view of the door, gives the occupant the most warning of anyone entering the space. Much like the Old West adage of “keeping your back to the wall and your eye on the door”, feng shui believes that you will sleep or work better if you place yourself in the secure Commanding Position. It is desirable for the office of the president or manager of a company and the bedroom of the head of the household to be at the back far corner of the building. 74 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2017
Each of the nine areas of the bagua (eight around the outside with one in the middle) resonate with different factors that make up the whole of one’s life. We use the bagua as a tool to determine where to place solutions to problems or enhancements to increase success. Let’s look at each of the bagua areas starting in the center front and going clockwise around ending in the middle. Career/Life Path/The Journey: This area, commonly called Career, encompasses much more than just the job at which you earn your living. The area is associated with the Water element and represents your ability to flow through life with ease and straightforwardness. When this area is in harmony, you will be clear about your life’s path. It is a good area in which to place objects that are liquid or that symbolize water in some way. Beautiful pictures of oceans, rivers, fish, or lakes or actual liquids such as oil, paint or ink would all be appropriate. An enhancement in this area usually brings accumulation of wealth and an ability to use it wisely to inhabitants. When this area is missing, some occupant is likely to suffer from illness unless there is a compensating correction in the area. Knowledge/Contemplation: This area, usually called Knowledge, refers mostly to inner knowledge, wisdom from within. It is associated with Mountain, an energy that is solid, old and still. It is symbolized by the stillness of nature in winter and by places of worship, solitary places and objects, and empty places or objects such as caves and boxes. This is one area of the house that should not have a projection or indentation and will have to be adjusted if either is present. When this area is missing, couples are likely to have difficulty conceiving children. Single women are likely to have difficulty with their reproductive system. A projection in this area is likely to lead to tension and arguments among the increasingly selfish inhabitants. (Too much attention to self!) When this area is in balance, inhabitants will spend some time in introspection and be aware of and honor their inner wisdom. Family/Elders/Ancestors: This area, often called Family, has to do with those who have come before us, much as Thunder precedes a storm. It refers to your ancestors and all who are considered yo be your “superiors” such as bosses as well as parents. The Wood energy of this area moves upward and outward like a tree, so tall plants or pictures of trees and forests are good enhancements. The sunrise
also has this energy. If there is a projection in this area, the energy of the house will lead to success for inhabitants. An indentation, however, is likely to indicate that inhabitants will lack energy, endurance and vitality. Children born into homes with indentations may lack regard for their elders and leave home at an early age. When this area is in balance, inhabitants will have energy to accomplish their goals and a healthy regard for their elders. Wealth/Abundance/Fortunate Blessings: This area, usually called Wealth, is really about all of the blessings in our lives. To have this area in balance is to be blessed by good luck in all areas of life, including good health and harmony as well as prosperity. Receiving a promotion, acknowledgement from an employer or parent, or any honor indicates balance in this area. Symbolized by Wind, the energy of this area is penetrating, like wind blowing through the tops of trees. A missing area in this part of the house will usually manifest as “bad luck� such as frequent accidents, business difficulties, tax or contract problems, and so forth. Fame/Reputation/Illumination: This area is usually called Fame. Indeed, when there is a projection in this area, the energy will often cause people to become well known. For most of us, this area has more to do with being clear about
who we are, an illumination from within that shines and is manifested in our Reputation. The energy of this area is Fire, an active, pulsating energy as is typical of summer. This area is enhanced by objects that illuminate, such as great music and works of art. When this part of the house is indented or missing, inhabitants will often lack self-confidence and be overly concerned with what others think of them. Occupants of homes with this area in balance will be true to their inner nature, keeping on their path as defined 180 degrees away in the Career/Life Path area. Marriage/Relationships/Partnership: This is the area of the bagua having to do with all relationships with others, passionate, platonic and professional. The energy of this area is the most yin of the bagua, that of the receptive Earth. To be in a successful relationship is to be open and receptive. Relationships with others help us to know ourselves better, and the better we know ourselves, the better our relationships are likely to be. When this area is missing or indented in a house, women are likely to have trouble living there. There also may be troubles around land or farming. A projection in this area is very beneficial to women living in the house, but may be uncomfortable for the men.

Benefactors/Helpful People/Travel: This area of the bagua is the area where Helpful People enter your life as good neighbors, supportive co-workers, volunteers, and encouraging friends. It is also the area through which you play similar roles in the lives of others, giving away your time and talents. The symbol of this area is Heaven, the most yang area of the bagua. If this area is indented or missing, the men in the house may lack energy, be ill, or have difficulty with employment. A projection in this area will lead to philanthropy on the part of the inhabitants, not necessarily monetary, but showing a concern for others and supporting them when possible and appropriate. When it is in balance, your “angels� will appear as you need them; you will find the help you need. The Center/Tai Chi: The center of your home contains aspects of all of the other parts. It is the place where it all comes together, the place of unity. It is a traditional place to bring various complementary parts of the outside or to have a small courtyard garden or atrium. It is important that this area be orderly and clear. It is definitely not the place for clutter. This is the center of health in the house. To be truly healthy is to have all of the eight aspects in balance. Portugal is an 800-year-old country with design influences that date back at least 2000 years to when it was known as the Roman territory of Lusitania. The design influences of Roman mosaics are still seen today in the elaborate stone mosaic patterns of Portugal’s cobblestone sidewalks. Despite being a small country on the periphery of Europe, or perhaps because of this, it was Portugal that launched the age of discovery, which brought European ships to Asian shores and Asian aesthetics to European design.

It is difficult to point to one predominant style in Portuguese home design, because homes are constructed in response to the various microclimates across the country and adapted to the taste and needs of the occupants. Just like in most countries, there is a wide range of design preferences among the Portuguese, whose homes range from sleek, modern city apartments,

Sharing meals with family and friends is at the heart of Portuguese culture. Portuguese kitchens, no matter the size, are fully equipped with all the spices, herbs and kitchen tools needed to serve a multitude. Families gather around the kitchen table for daily meals, but Sunday afternoons are reserved for big family gatherings at the dining room table. Hospitality is one of the most treasured values among the Portuguese people, and no occasion is too small to celebrate. For these reasons, every Portuguese home is equipped with a large, sturdy, extendable table, traditional table linens and an abundance of earthenware or porcelain serving dishes in all shapes and sizes. Beyond the painted azulejos, many other types of modern tiles are used throughout Portuguese homes, including cement hydraulic tiles, which are also handmade in Portugal. Kitchens and bathrooms are tiled from floor to ceiling, and nearly all Portuguese homes have tiled floors throughout, allowing floors to be easily swept clean and keeping homes

One of the most unique aspects of home design in Portugal is the use of hand painted tiles. On a stroll down any historic street in cities like Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, one of the first things you’ll notice are the ceramic tiles covering the facades of homes and buildings. These tiles, called azulejos in Portuguese, are a cultural heritage and an important part of Portuguese home design for both practical and aesthetic reasons. Azulejo comes from the Arabic word for “polished stone” and use of azulejos in Portugual originated with the Moors. Following the Christian conquest of Portugal in the 13th century, colorful, geometric tiles were imported from

Portugal is a predominantely Catholic country and the importance to Portuguese culture of saints such as Our Lady of Fatima cannot be overestimated. Many Portuguese homes are adorned with sacred art, such as images of Our Lady as well as other saints that hold particular significance to the homeowners. When entering a Portuguese home, you will often see saints depicted on azulejos, which are mounted beside gates or over the
front door of the home. Within the home, you may encounter a home altar adorned with candles, flowers, photos and keepsakes, and upon which most commonly stands a statue of a favorite saint, but which may also hold a holy image from any number of traditions held sacred by the homeowners. Portugal is a little more than half the size of North Carolina, yet for such a small country it is a place that centuries ago greatly influenced countries around the globe, and which today continues to contain an amazing diversity of cultural style, taste, and tradition, reflected and yet somehow unified in the design of homes.
