A New Way of Seeing by Laura Esculcas

I recently stumbled across a scholarly article entitled “The Poetics of Concealment, by Samir Akkach, which articulates an idea that has really struck a chord with me in my work. We attribute great significance to the architecture erected over sacred sites. The narrative about such sites is often centered on the building’s historical origin and the original intent of its builders, or what we suppose it to be. The building is often the central focus of our attention when visiting great monuments, whether at an actively used temple such as a gothic cathedral in France, or the ruins of an ancient holy city such as Machu Picchu in Peru. In part, our fascination can be attributed to the architectural mastery of the builders, and the fact that we humans naturally gravitate toward imposing structures and symbols of power.

The story we are often told at a temple is about how and why the men (usually men) envisioned and built the temple, implying that only when the temple was consecrated (made or declared sacred) does the rest follow suit.

Yet most of these monuments simultaneously reveal and conceal the sacred. The monument itself reveals the site to be significant while at the same time containing, concealing or covering that which is significant about it.

Akkach writes about one particular sacred site, the Dome of the Rock, but I believe this premise applies to

46 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2017

But what if we turn this around and view the temple not as the focus of the narrative, but as one part of the full narrative of the sacred site? In other words, the site is sacred in its origin, and the building is something acquired by that already sacred site. This removes architecture from the center of the narrative, and with it the importance of who built it and why. This frees our attention and shifts us out of the head, away from facts, and into our experience in the presence of the sacred. This is when we shift from traveler to pilgrim.

many more sacred places. Akkach describes it: “At this point, it no longer matters what the original intent was, or who the author was, for the Rock seems to have its own ulterior motives that are independent of the consciousness of human agents. This inversion gives primacy to the sacred and its hierophantic acts and objects over human intentionality and architectural intervention.”

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” - Henry Miller When we travel to sacred places, it’s easy to get caught up in the photos, the facts, and the materiality of the place as the central focus of our visit. This is natural, because we have physically journeyed to be physically present in this physical structure. At times I’ve heard people say, “I don’t feel anything.” At these moments, it helps to remember that the sacred is always veiled, and must be, as we would find it nearly impossible to behold in its unveiled manifestation. “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things,” said Henry Miller. And likewise Akkach so eloquently suggests that the challenge “seems to lie in one’s ability to see beyond the materiality of both the Rock and its beautiful architectural veil, to comprehend the enduring secrets that lie deep beneath the transience and ephemerality of both architecture and history.” To “see beyond the materiality” is part of being a pilgrim. This resonates with me and why I find it so meaningful to go beyond history and explore the myths and legends of the places I visit. Every myth contains a bit of truth, but the very nature of myth is to be a narrative that draws the imagination “deep beneath the transience and ephemerality of both architecture and history.” By letting ourselves be drawn into the mythical realm, we may briefly get past the veils of materiality. For as Fernando Pessoa put it, “Myth is the nothing that is everything.” For more information, visit. www.earthshamans.com Summer 2017 | Fine Homes & Design 49

Taste: While most people aren’t grazing on ornamental shrubs, it can be an option to design an edible landscape that produces the same colors, shapes and aesthetics as those that don’t provide some form of nutrient (to you). Right now, it is said that roughly 60 million Americans grow edible plants of some kind during the year. The use of fruit plants, veggies and herbs can be both functional, pleasing to the eye, and doesn’t necessarily have to be contained in a garden specific part of your yard. For example, growing blueberry bushes throughout the more ornamental ones can provide that touch of color with a seasonal treat each time you go outside. Ideas: - What are your favorite fruit or vegetables that you feel confident in growing, maintaining and harvesting? - Will you want edible plants that will return every year with little maintenance, or will you be planting seasonal ones that need more attention? Or both? - How can you utilize edible container gardens throughout your yard for more enhanced greenery? - If you love hanging baskets - did you know strawberries can be grown in a hanging basket?

Smell: Imagine walking towards your home and being greeted by a variety of smells, from blossoming flowers and herbs tucked in all corners of your yard. Adding certain kinds of thyme in between pathway stone can bring a welcoming new dimension as you release its fragrance each step of the way. For many, the scents of spring and summer flowers are enough to make any day seem more refreshing. Did you know that researchers from Rockefeller University were able to conduct a test which showed that the nose can smell at least one trillion distinct scents? Smell really is a powerful way of understanding our environment. Ideas: - If you notice odors that you don’t enjoy in your yard, how can adding or subtracting items dampen it’s smell? For example, if you don’t like the smell of mulches, try working with more ground cover or no mow grass instead. - Research the scent of plants before installing, and be sure to strategically places them around your yard for the most effect. Container gardens with herbs, such as rosemary, can give wonderful aromas throughout your yard - plus handy for cooking or specialty drinks!

Sound: Are you the kind of person who feels energized by the singing of distant birds, or one who is soothed by the sound of trickling water? All of us have our ‘go-to’ preference. Unfortunately, many homeowners struggle with unwanted sounds that take away from being able to enjoy their yard. For those those looking to dampen neighborhood sounds from cars or other activities, they can

can really bring together any landscape design. Remember, even a quiet environment is an important personal preference. Ideas: - Adding the right amount of native shrubs and trees, such as hollies, can help encourage bird species to nest or feast in your yard, creating many opportunities hear and see them. - If there is no natural steam nearby, an installed water feature can provide you with the constant sound of trickling water. - Adding features such as wind sculptures to promote sound.

Understanding and implementing a multisensory landscape allows you to be more in tune with your outdoor living environment. Creating a space that makes you feel good, while tailoring to your needs, should be the top priority when either constructing or renovating the landscape on your land. senses and brainstorming what comes naturally to you. At the end of the day, a more individualized landscape, tailored to your needs and likes, creates a higher chance of spending more time outside. We think that makes the investment worth while, and for some, it just makes scents!

A Glorious Rainbow of Books at Bookends, Pack Library’s Used Book Store By Colleen Watson Summer spreads her golden light, beckoning us with warm breezes and sun-drenched dreams to climb out of our boxes and head into the sunlight. We walk through the forest, skip lightly by the stream and pause, listening to the music of nature. If we’re observant enough, we might see Swallows nesting under eaves, feeding their babies making a fuss, drawing the neighbor cat’s attention. This is reality, but for those of us with a love of the written word, books can take us into the world of summer … even if it’s not. And who doesn’t have a fond childhood memory of sitting under an ancient Elm, her limbs spread wide in comfort and grace, as we lose ourselves in a good book? Daydreams aside, books take us to fascinating places, opening our eyes to the cultures and landscapes of the countries of the world. Or, books may teach us how, in the seeming randomness of the natural world, we 56 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2017

find mathematical order based on Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio. Libraries are the repositories of vast amounts of knowledge and information and in Buncombe County, the public library system consists of the main library and 11 branch libraries, one located within fairly close proximity to every resident. A Law Library, housed in the County Courthouse, is also available to the public and the legal community. In addition, Buncombe County is fortunate enough to have a grand used book store, Bookends, as part of the Pack Memorial Library, the county’s central branch. While libraries, such as they were, date back to the earliest of times, they originally consisted mainly of archives of early forms of writing, such as transactions captured on clay tablets or temple records on the papyrus of Ancient Egypt. As long ago as 700 BC,

a discovery in Nineveh showed an actual library classification system in use. In the US, the first library was founded in 1701 as part of the Anglican church. Public libraries with books available to members or through subscriptions would soon follow. The first free public library was started in New Hampshire in 1833, and quickly became the norm.

Illustration by Tom Seidmann-Freud, Sigmund Freud’s niece, from ‘David the Dreamer’ (1922).

Since libraries are free and open to the public, they count on a variety of public and private sources for funding. Funds support the acquisition of new and classic fiction, nonfiction and reference books, audio books, eBooks, music and movies, art prints, magazines and newspapers, as well as other electronic material. Librarians and other staff support the operations of the library system. Pack Memorial is the largest library, with more than 150,000 items available for review and checkout. Their Sondley Reference Department provides a vast amount of research materials from reports and literary criticism to homework help. Numerous events are also sponsored by Buncombe County libraries. Open to the public, these events provide valuable information, services or activities for all ages. At Pack, the Lord Auditorium is a 150-seat facility often used for events. It’s available for public use during library hours, but must be reserved in advance.

A variety of collections, such as the North Carolina Collection with its local history and genealogy resources, and the Thomas Wolfe Collection honoring Asheville’s favorite son, sets the Pack Library apart. Friends of the Pack Library provide key financial support to help fund necessary items or events that may fall outside of the library’s annual budget. Friends organizations are prolific throughout America’s library system and sometimes include used book stores, like Bookends. The Pack Friends group includes volunteers who manage the used book store located just inside of the Pack Library in downtown Asheville. Through the sale of gently used books of all genres, as well as other items such as Audio Books, CDs, DVDs, comic books and graphic novels, Bookends supports the library financially. continued on page 60 Summer 2017 | Fine Homes & Design 57

Anyone can become a Friend of the Library through a $15 membership fee that goes directly to either the main library or one of the branches, as designated by you. With a Friends’ membership, you will receive a subscription to Happenings, the library’s newsletter, and it’s a great way to support the library. Bookends depends on the generosity of the public. It gets its books, music and movies through donations, as well as items withdrawn from the library’s system. These are then sold at very reasonable prices with the funds raised benefiting the library, and consequently the community. For those with large collections, Pack Friends will often assist with packing and transporting the books to the library. It’s a partnership that runs full circle.

A Friend of the Library browsing the books.

The Pack Friends call the first Friday of every month “Frugal Friday.” On these days, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you will find books galore in the entryway of the Pack Memorial Library, where you can get even better deals on books and other items from the book store for just 25 cents or $2.00 a box. Children’s books and a few others are sold for 10 cents. It’s great for everyone and provides an opportunity to restock the shelves with additional items.

Other fundraisers and book sales are held throughout the year and are always posted online and at the library. Libraries are and will continue to be extremely crucial to our society. With digital books on the rise and as more and more information is made accessible through our laptops and cell phones, libraries continue to evolve. They offer new and varied services, such as online checkout of digital books and much more. Libraries provide a solid foundation for access to knowledge. It is a foundation on which we as a society is built. Bringing our young people into a vast repository of actual books, allowing them to touch their pages, brings reading to life. Teaching the importance of reading to children at an early age instills in them a curiosity that will stay with them for their entire lives, helping them to turn information into knowledge … and knowledge into wisdom. Libraries mean different things to different people, but for those who love and support libraries, the world would be a very different place without them. Dr Maya Angelou is one who actually credited a library with saving her life as a child. She called a library “a rainbow in the clouds.” 60 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2017

“Information belongs to everyone,” she said in an interview with the New York Public Library when they acquired Dr Angelou’s papers in October 2010. “Information helps you to see that you’re not alone. That there’s somebody in Mississippi and somebody in Tokyo who all have wept, who’ve all longed and lost, who’ve all been happy. So the library helps you to see, not only that you are not alone, but that you’re not really any different from everyone else. There may be details that are different, but a human being is a human being.”

Bookends is open to the public inside the Pack Memorial Library at 67 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville during regular library hours: Monday - Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Payment for your used books and more can be made (cash only) at the library’s front desk. Buncombe County residents or property owners can obtain a free library card with appropriate identification, which enables them to borrow, renew or request materials from any Buncombe County library branch. Also, individuals with library cards have access to books from libraries in other counties that participate in the NC Cardinal Program. -----------------------------For more information on Bookends, visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/BookendsAtPackLibrary/ For information about the Buncombe County Library system, go to: https://www.buncombecounty.org/governing/depts/library/ Summer 2017 | Fine Homes & Design 61

Reconnect With Nature

By Ted Carter and Calen Rayne

Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Our Blue Ridge Mountains offer many opportunities to spend time in nature, and we attract artists and lovers of the outdoors who enjoy spending time in Asheville, and in doing so, bring tourist dollars to our region. Some journey to Asheville to reconnect with nature and slow the pace of their lives. For those who wish to establish or strengthen an earth-based connection, there are as many ways to reconnect with earth as there are people on the planet. Each of us has a unique link, like an energetic fingerprint. When you turn your senses over to nature, it heightens your awareness of everything. Following are a few tools one can use to enhance your experience either at home or during your travels to Asheville and other locales. 1. A perfect way to start: David Suzuki’s thirty-by80 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2017

thirty challenge. Spend thirty minutes outside for thirty straight days. Walk, run, explore, or just sit out in nature, and let it have its way with you. Reconnecting to the earth is just plain good for you. As his website shows, scientific research proves that after just two minutes, being in nature begins to relieve stress; within two hours, your memory and attention span improve; and after two days in nature, cancer-fighting white blood cell levels increase by as much as fifty percent. Maybe those doctors of long ago who sent their patients to Asheville as a “treatment” knew what they were doing. 2. On your nature walks, see if you can identify three trees. Stumped? No worries, there’s an app for that: Leafsnap (http://leafsnap.com) is an “electronic field guide” that allows you to take a picture with your smart phone and dig into a database that will eventually include all varieties of trees in the continental United States. continued on page 82

3. Branch out and be with nature at night. It’s a whole other world. Note how your nonvisual senses perk up. 4. Develop a walking meditation practice. How often have you solved a problem or received an inspiration just by walking quietly by yourself? Why? Because outside, you are closer to your own life source, a wisdom as old as time itself. 5. Visit the North Carolina Arboretum (www.ncarboretum.org), featuring 65 acres of various cultivated gardens and exhibits, as well as more than 10 miles of hiking trails. 6. Sit in a garden or a wooded area, near a seashore, or just sit on a porch, park bench, or any other place where you can be outside in relative quiet. With eyes closed, let the sounds seep into you. Note how your breathing slows and your stress level declines. 7. Go hunting with a camera or a tape recorder. Take pictures that record your experience. Set your tape recorder near a lake or stream and record the sounds. Share on your website or social networking sites. 8. Visit Asheville’s River Arts District and downtown art galleries. They are full of work of artists who have tried to capture the ephemeral, changing nature of art on canvas, in photographs, and in a variety of other modalities. Nature is elusive; it never stands still. There is great tradition of using art in your landscape, of honoring nature’s capacity to stir wonder and act as a canvas and backdrop for companion works of art that are manmade. 9. Bring a piece of Asheville art back to your home. Whether you fill your garden and home with paintings, solar lamps, gazing balls, angels, ornamental iron, sculpture, chimes, shepherd’s hooks, works of art are a beautiful way to enhance your home décor or landscape. It can add perspective, balance, harmony, charm, and memories from your travels. We are the first generation to be disconnected from the stars and skies that humankind has always turned to in awe. Because of pollution and bright city lights, we are often cut off from the sight of the cosmos to which we belong. Whenever you can, do any of these practices under a full night sky and feel the moon and the stars above you and the earth beneath you. It completes a magical and mystical circle that each of us relates to without knowing why. For more from Ted and Calen visit: www.sacredlandscapes.com 82 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2017

Foundations of Feng Shui By Jini Rayne

Most of the earlier people on our earth sought to live in harmony with their surroundings in order to facilitate an easier life. 90 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2017

The Chinese system, called feng shui, has been handed down through the generations in several iterations, and is available for us to use today. Feng shui posits that all of life, our fortunes and destiny, are closely linked with nature and the workings of the whole universe. Indeed, our physical surroundings affect every aspect of our lives. Records of feng shui elements date back to the fourth century B.C., so the foundations were established much earlier. Human survival depended upon the successful cultivation of crops, which in turn, depended on the caprices of nature. The Chinese saw the cycles of heaven and earth, rain, drought, flood, frost, and sun, as being entwined with the workings of the whole universe. In order to survive, they realized they needed to be in harmony with nature. Nature was venerated. To go against the natural course of the landscape was to leave oneself vulnerable to disaster. Therefore, they took great pains to avoid disturbing the balance of nature when building anything, be it a road, a city or even just a house or barn.

maintain physical, mental, emotional and environmental balance. Feng shui seeks to help us position ourselves in such a way as to harness good environmental ch’i to enhance the flow of ch’i within our bodies to improve all aspects of our life. Clutter blocks the flow of ch’i, so clearing out clutter is one of the first tasks in feng shui. The Chinese believe that there are five factors that contribute to one’s fortune in life. Most important is one’s fate or destiny, which can be good, fair or poor and determines around seventy percent of one’s fortunes. Fate is determined by the place, time, direction and speed with which you hit the road at birth. We have all heard of someone being born with a silver spoon in their mouth and the advantage that good start implies. Fate also has to do with one’s astrology.

There are many tools and approaches used in feng shui. To become an expert requires many years of study and practice.

Ch’i: energy, human spirit, or cosmic breath, is the force that links all of our universe together. There are different kinds of ch’i as the varying synonyms seem to imply. There is the ch’i that circulates in the atmosphere and the heavens. The ch’i of the earth is the energy that creates landscapes and influences what flora and fauna thrive or struggle in a given area. The Chinese speak of “dragon points” which are similar to the energy paths once traced in Europe.

Human ch’i moves within us and is different for each person. It is with us from birth and is the energy that animates us. While a person’s appearance may change greatly through the years, one’s signature ch’i pattern typically allows others to recognize us even at that fiftieth class reunion. Ch’i is the energy necessary to

The second factor is luck, the pattern of events that impact you as you head down your life path. Third is feng shui, your placement or positioning on the earth. Making sure that you are aligned with good feng shui is the most important single thing you can do to improve your fate and luck.

The fourth factor contributing to your fortune in life is charitable actions, those positive actions or good deeds done without hope of recognition or reward that many believe influence your karma. Fifth and least important percentagewise is self-improvement. Improving one’s character and moral fiber, as well as going to school or learning new skills, invites good people, events, opportunities and well-being into your life. In the Western world, when things are not going our way, we tend to look at ourselves and believe that gaining some new skill or personality trait might be what is needed to make the difference that we desire. The Chinese would be more likely to begin by examining their feng shui to locate what is blocking their success,

and make those changes first before moving on to charitable actions and self-improvement. Perhaps we would do well to add feng shui to our list of strategies to facilitate our efforts to accomplish our goals. Let’s start by getting a little bit better understanding of feng shui. The term feng shui is composed of the two Chinese words for wind and water. These two natural elements flow and circulate everywhere on earth. Both are necessary to sustain life. Their combined qualities largely determine climate which, in turn, influences food supply and lifestyle, an important factor in our health, energy and even mood. In his book “Gun, Germs and Steel”, Jared Diamond concludes that the determining factor governing the rate

of progress and destiny of human societies is the environment in which they exist. This is entirely consistent with the feng shui tenet that your immediate environment affects you daily and contributes to your long-term destiny. Much like a grain of sand or small pebble in the shoe, if not removed, will cause a blister that might get infected and cause a cascading series of misfortune over a period of time, a small environmental irritant can start a downward spiral in one’s life. While one might appreciate the quiet or even solitude afforded by living on a road marked “dead end” or “no outlet”, the subconscious suggestion of a lack of possibilities could cause inhabitants to become frustrated or limit themselves.

There are many tools and approaches used in feng shui. To become an expert requires many years of study and practice. As implied in the last paragraph, one important aspect to consider is analysis of the symbolism, whether the symbolism is chosen, as in artwork and other decorating features, or not chosen, as in that road sign referenced earlier. For example, when consulting with a single person who wishes to find a partner, I often find that most of the art in their home depicts a solo item. Usually there are no pairs of anything to be found on display, not even two candlesticks on the dining room table. This is reinforcing their singleness. Consciously populating their home with representations of pairs sets the stage for a different outlook and outcome. The bagua is an energy map or mandala of right relationship and is an important tool in feng shui. Getting the right balance and arrangement in the bagua of your home or office aligns you with the larger energy resonance pattern. This map can be used on a macro level in analyzing a country or city, or on a micro level in looking at the energetics of one’s desktop or even bed. It is typically used in analyzing the plot of land or site before a home is built, the blueprint of the whole home, and also each room within the home. Generally, the more time you spend in a given environment, the more impact it has on you. Therefore adjustments made to your bedroom or office are likely to be more effective than those made in the guest bedroom or another room where you spend little time. Next time we will look at how to use the bagua to evaluate and improve the feng shui of your home. Until then, clear out your clutter and look at the symbolism in your surroundings and see if they are in sync with your life as you wish it to be.
