A New Year, A New You: Landscape Edition

With the days becoming subtly longer and the energy of the holiday season fading down, we now have time to focus on the newest addition to our daily routine - 2017. For many home owners, the colder air offers a feeling of relief. Less time doing outdoor projects means more time spent on the indoor ones that were set aside during the warmer weather. The winter months are the ideal time to spend reflecting and planning for a landscape that brings you joy - long before the planting, maintaining and hard work begins. In our personal lives, many of us also view the end of the year is a time for self reflection and planning for the year to come. We see the fresh calendar as another opportunity to reach new and exciting goals. Here at Snow Creek Landscaping, we always encourage our clients, friends and family to include your own personal development with the planning of your landscape. We firmly believe that the outside of a home can greatly affect one’s happiness.

By Snow Creek Landscaping Arden, North Carolina

Have you ever felt unattached when you pull up to your house? Too often people unconsciously feel agitated or disconnected because their landscape doesn’t fit what they internally envision their home to be like. Whether it was designed for previous owners, unkept because of a busy work schedule, or it just doesn’t match the person you have become throughout the years - all of those can affect your personal life.

What Makes You Truly Happy? As we focus our attention in the outside of the house, it is extremely important to understand what makes you happy. So many people focus soley on creating a personalized space on the inside of their walls. For us, the outside of one’s house is just as important as the inside. Then, if the outside of our home is truly an extension of who we are as a person, surely it should include things that give us joy. To start off, we suggest writing down characteristics of what your ideal yard is. What is it that makes you stop and stare in appreciation at other homes? Is it a clean cut and simplistic design that just makes you feel comfortable, or are you drawn to a more organic and natural looking yard? For some, functionality and maintenance plays a big role, while others may be initially drawn to certain smells, colors and textures of specific plant species. Left: A waterfall we installed at a client’s house. How can we help you make your home become a place to relax and enjoy nature?

24 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

Creating a list doesn’t mean that everything on there has to be completed, so think of it more as a brainstorming session. Some yards wouldn’t be complete without statues, stepping stones and waterfalls - extras that are tailored specifically for the owner. Get creative and follow your instinct. Imagine your ideal outdoor environment and put it into a list. Again, write down what makes you happy. You know what brings you joy better than anyone. Once your characteristic list is complete, compare it to what you already have. If your perfect yard is well trimmed with not a weed in sight, but your current situation is the opposite, that could potentially be a source of frustration for you. For those who are in the process of building - knowing what will make you feel satisfied is a crucial part of the planning process.

Priority Work While the overall goal of owning a home is to create a place that makes you happy, there are unfortunately going to be certain ’unflattering’ aspects. If with each storm you are worried about a seemingly dead tree falling over or water flooding into the driveway and neighborhood, those should be a priority for the new year. Take time to make a list of all the things that need to be fixed around your yard before taking on new projects. Examples of priority items on your property: Unhealthy or dead trees Incorrect drainage of water Obstacles in the way or unsafe pathways Dim lighting making it hard to see Anything that could promote structural damage As a company, we value our clients. We want the natural environment around you to be thriving and healthy, while at the same time creating a safe place for you to live. Our arborists, production and maintenance crews are trained to make sure both plants and clients are happy. When you make your plans for the next year, we ask that you please take the time to look at your property and identify the landscape jobs that need to get done to ensure your safety and well-being. We also offer environmental assessments in our packages.

Top: Amanda, our Gardening Supervisor, works with her team to make sure your yard stays healthy and looking fabulous! Middle: Getting creative with steps and railings is what seperates our clients from other yards. Bottom: Proper drainage can be both functional and naturally beautiful.

Making a Plan Obtaining the perfect yard, most of the time, can’t be achieved overnight. Nature needs time to grow and settle into it’s place. Like our personal goals, preparing and planning can lead to those successes. Consider the following when tackling projects in the new year. What is your budget for the next couple of years? Investing in landscape projects often is multi year project that increases property value and overall happiness. Start with priority items, then move towards the preferred projects. If contacting us for our tree service to remove a dead tree is an urgent need, budget that as soon as possible. After those are done, figure out what is left for those extra projects that you been wanting to have around the home. How is your landscape going to be maintained? Creating your backyard oasis is just the first step. Watering and general upkeep is key to having a flourishing yard. If currently you cannot maintain your yard, then let’s work out a plan with our maintenance and gardening crew before new projects are installed. Remember, if you know that a clean and healthy yard is what makes you happy let’s work on getting that for you! What is your timeline? Sometimes giving yourself a deadline to get things accomplished by is a great way to take that first step. Using an upcoming family reunion or graduation party as a deadline is a great way to start the design and installation process. We often have clients come to us with a specific date they would like the job to be completed by. This helps us make suggestions and create the best timeline for completion. A landscape that brings you joy and happiness each time you come home is something that we want all of our clients to experience. As a local landscaping company in Western North Carolina, we strive to promote beautiful and healthy habitats that are both native and environmentally friendly. Give us a call and let’s see how we can help you grow in 2017.

Experience the Best of Winter in WNC By Colleen Watson Winter, that most generous of seasons … You see her coming in her white coat, slipping down the mountains, frosty tendrils following at her heels. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, lush and green in the summertime, are more silent now. Filled with campers, hikers, cyclists, rock climbers and a myriad of others, they are alive with activity during the season of light. But now, stark in their beauty, they only awaken for the songs of the winter birds and those avid nature lovers wishing to experience the rush of bright blue skies and views that go on for miles. WILDFIRES IN OUR FORESTS This year was a time of great destruction for the beautiful mountain forests. While the NC Nature Conservancy regularly conducts planned burns to keep the forests healthy and vibrant, this year saw uncontrolled devastation fueled by extreme drought over the summer and the build up of dense forest over the years. Climate change will continue to play a role as we see more and more extremes. Unbelievably, according to the US Forest Service, most of the fires in October and November of 2016 were believed to be human-caused. Due to the extreme circumstances caused by the lack of rain and other factors, they were difficult to 42 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

control and extinguish. The toll to wildlife and the environment was inestimable! But while fires, particularly fires of this magnitude, always change the forest; they also open it up to new life, preparing it for renewal. The forests will return with new growth and wildflowers in the spring. And until then, even with the chill of winter, our milder climate welcomes its locals and tourists alike, offering activities for all ages. HIKING THE WINTER TRAILS OF WNC An abundance of great trails beckons nature lovers to hike the great outdoors and marvel at the beauty of this area. The majesty of the leafless trees creates sweeping views of the rolling mountains. Fewer hikers are out and about, so you can revel in the quiet solitude of a winter’s day. While sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed in the winter, it can be accessed at many of its crossroads or at Asheville’s Folk Art Center. Closed sections can be completely cleared of snow and ice and can be a great place to hike (or bike). Continued on page 44

John Rock: 37 miles from Asheville will find you at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and the trail to this rock summit where you will be treated to a panoramic view of Looking Glass Rock. Cedar Rock Falls is on the way and a perfect place to take a break on this five-mile loop. Lover’s Leap: A great trail 36 miles from Asheville is the short 1.5-mile loop of the Appalachian Trail that starts in downtown Hot Springs. You will cross the French Broad River and climb the ridge to a rock outcropping for some beautiful views of the valley, river and the town. Complete the outing with a hot soak in the mineral springs. Rainbow Falls: There are a number of great hikes that take you to beautiful cascading waterfalls, many times frozen in glistening formations, dotted with rainbows as the sunlight catches the crystals. Located 53 miles southwest of Asheville, Rainbow Falls is one of four falls on a two-mile stretch of the river in the Nantahala National Forest. This three-mile round-trip hiking trail is rated moderate and begins from the Gorges State Park access area. Rattlesnake Lodge: Located 14 miles north of Asheville, this local favorite is part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and can be accessed from Ox Creek Road. This three-mile roundtrip hike takes you on the old carriage road up the ridge on a gradual climb to the ruins of a summer lodge from the early 1900s. Make sure you check the weather forecast before heading out and remember that it can be much colder in the higher elevations. Also check with the Forest Service for updated trail closings (their website address can be found at the bottom of this article). TAKING TO THE SLOPES

Here are some excellent places to hike that are easily accessible. Bearwallow Mountain: 19 miles from Asheville will find you at this spot where you can access a two-mile round-trip moderate-rated hiking trail created by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy. At 4,232 feet, Bearwallow Mountain straddles the Eastern Continental Divide at the western rim of the Hickory Nut Gorge and treats hikers to a grassy meadow at its summit, along with a nearly 360 degree view. Chimney Rock: Chimney Rock State Park is located 25 miles southeast of Asheville. A number of trails offer sweeping views, many of which are open during winter. An excellent choice is the Four Seasons Trail, which is 1.2 miles round-trip, but quite steep. This trail provides you with a choice to climb to the top of the Chimney or to the bottom of the falls. 44 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

While winters in Asheville are typically milder, the higher elevations of the mountains in WNC bring plenty of snow and an excellent opportunity for some downhill fun. Beech Mountain Ski Resort: Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this resort includes 95 acres of skiable area and 15 slopes and trails designed for all ski levels. The town of Beech Mountain sits at 5,506 feet, which makes it the highest town in the eastern US and a perfect winter spot. A state-ofthe-art snow tubing park is located at the base of the slopes adjacent to the Alpine Village where ice skating is available. [beechmountainresort.com] Cataloochee Ski Area: Located in Maggie Valley, NC, this winter resort is nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains just 40 miles west of Asheville. Its gentle slopes are excellent for those just starting out, while the 1000 foot Upper Omigosh is perfect for the seasoned expert. With 50 acres of skiable area, nighttime skiing is offered and snow tubing is available. [cataloochee.com]

Sugar Mountain Resort: Located in Banner Elk, NC, this resort features 125 acres of skiable terrain. Eight lifts will get you to the top of their 21 slopes quickly. 15 slopes are available for night skiing and snowboarding. Ice skating and snow tubing are also options. [skisugar.com] Wolf Ridge Ski Resort: This Madison County resort is the closest to Asheville, just 30 minutes north of downtown. With beautiful long-range views, the ski terrain boasts 15 runs and four lifts. [skiwolfridgenc.com] DINING IN ASHEVILLE In and around Asheville you can always find great food. It can be said that a great many of the nearly 250 independent restaurants truly understand the principles behind sustainability and farm-to-table. All manner of excellent cuisine can be found, so if you’re a foodie, you will be in your element. Designated as one of the top ten food and wine destinations in the US, Asheville restaurateurs understand the importance of using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. You can enjoy Asheville’s superb and diverse cuisine at any time, but from January 17-26, participating restaurants during Asheville Restaurant Week offer prix fixe menus ranging from $15-$35 per person. Craft brewing is on the rise in the US, and that’s particularly true here. In addition to great food, about 100 local beers can be found in Asheville, which has more breweries per capita than any other US city. BIRD WATCHING Bird watching may be something you think of for warmer seasons, but in winter you will find some of the migratory birds that you may not see at other times of the year. You may also see some familiar birds in their winter plumage. These will look completely different and you may not recognize some of them. For example, the male American Goldfinch, while bright yellow in the summer, will appear to be olive to brownish in color. Winter is the perfect time to observe the nuthatch as they scale the trunks of trees, moving rapidly up and down and even sideways in a rather erratic motion. They jam large seeds and nuts into tree bark before pecking with their sharp bill to dislodge the seeds inside. They also store food under the bark of a tree to eat later. The White-breasted Nuthatch is the most common in this area.

Winter is a great time to visit the Biltmore Estate to see waterfowl, particularly buffleheads, hooded mergansers, teal and ring-necked ducks. Some winters may find flocks of snow geese on the grounds. Year round residents can also be spotted as you walk through the meadows, pastures, fields and woods. It’s easy to see why the Biltmore Estate is an official site on the North Carolina Birding Trail. Another great bird watching site, no matter the season, is the Beaver Lake Sanctuary. This marvelous wildlife oasis, managed by the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society, is in the heart of the busy north Asheville area. Morning bird expeditions can award you with some great sightings. The 3/8-mile boardwalk through the wetland area and by the lake provides sitting areas to watch the birds. Guided bird walks occur from October through March. Meet at the gazebo on the south end of the lake at 9:00 am on the first Saturday of each month. To help both new and seasoned birders, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has developed the Merlin Bird ID. They recently added an amazing upgrade that analyzes photos taken on your phone that offers bird ID suggestions. Merlin features 650 bird species and you can download the app for free for your specific device. AND DON’T FORGET INDOORS If the chill is too much for you and the kids are itching to take off their gloves, there are plenty of things to do. The Asheville Art Museum is undergoing a major expansion and renovation at its location on Pack Square in downtown Asheville. In the meantime, they’ve opened a pop-up location at 175 Biltmore Ave. This Asheville Art Museum On the Slope is offering programming at that location, and in conjunction with other community locations. Check their event page for upcoming activities. [ashevilleart.org/events/] Everyone enjoys touring America’s largest home, the Biltmore Estate. Their 3rd annual costume exhibition, Designed for Drama: Fashion from the Classics, runs from February 10th through July 4th. The exhibit features over 40 costumes from popular movies, inspired by favorite stories in George Vanderbilt’s 22,000-volume library. For the artist in all of us, a visit to the Folk Art Center, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, features artists from Southern Appalachia. Daily craft demonstrations are held where visitors can interact with the artists and gain a better understanding of the inspiration behind their work. For something completely different, you can tour the Queen Anne-influenced boyhood home of the novelist Thomas Wolfe at 52 North Market Street. The 29-room, Queen Anne-influenced house has been preserved with original furnishings, in much the same way as it was when the writer of Look Homeward, Angel and You Can’t Go Home Again lived there. After you’ve spent a day in the great outdoors, warm up with a cup of hot cocoa at the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. The kids can choose a variety of drinks or desserts, but if you really love chocolate don’t miss their signature Liquid Truffles. Whether you’re a local, a tourist or new to the area, Western North Carolina has it all. The unique culture and diversity of Asheville draws you in and the vibrant energy of this area keeps you here. So get out this winter and enjoy what this area offers. Meet the chill head-on and have a great season!

Family-Owned Staffing Businesses Support WNC’s Job Market By Colleen Watson There are a number of reasons why Asheville continues to make the many “Best of” lists. Asheville and the surrounding area’s tourism-based economy draws people in part because of its beauty and access to amazing outdoor activities, the many great restaurants (most with a Farm-to-Table and organic focus), its vast live music and art scene, and let’s not forget the thriving brewery businesses. People come to visit and many wish to stay … let’s face it, Asheville is a hot market! And where jobs are concerned, new development and redevelopment are bringing new businesses to the area. Let’s look at the numbers. According to Forbes, Asheville is #40 in Best Places for Business and Careers and #10 in the Cost of Doing Business. As of September 2016, data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the Job Growth rose 2.3% with Unemployment at 3.8%. For the past six years, Asheville has seen year-overyear employment growth.

Express owners Gary Gallagher and daughter Meredith Campbell

Not surprisingly, at the crest of the job growth is the health services industry. Next in line is the professional and business services sector that includes accounting, architecture, law, and consulting firms—jobs offering higher pay and requiring a higher level of education.

About now, you may be asking yourself how you can tap into this growth and find a job in Western North Carolina (WNC). The process of finding a job has changed dramatically over the years, with even the content and formatting of your resume changing. There are companies that can help you navigate this process and two family-owned businesses are options in this area: Express Employment Professionals, located in Asheville, and Friday Staffing, with offices in Arden, Hendersonville and Morganton. On the surface, some may think this type of business doesn’t have much of an impact on the marketplace; however, this industry makes a large financial contribution to the job market. In 1987, John Modaff and his wife, Diane, bought Friday Temporary Help Services, tapping into his customer service experience as a commercial banking officer to successfully compete with national and international firms. 56 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

Friday Staffing, owned and operated by David Modaff What had started with one person working out of her home on one job at a time with revenues to match grew into Friday Staffing, with revenues of $20 million and 22 internal employees covering eight WNC counties. Friday has 500 - 700 employees assigned to work at over 200 client companies. They handle traditional industrial and clerical staffing, but also provide workers in technical and professional fields. Express Pros is another family business that provides a much-needed service to individuals and businesses. Their tradition of “helping good people find good companies and good companies find good people” supports their process. Being successful in this field and connecting the right job seekers with employers is a skill that takes more than matching resumes with job descriptions. With a team of certified employment professionals who focus on specific industry sectors, Express has the business knowledge to be able to more effectively consult with their Associates (individuals who have successfully completed the Express application process). Services are available to help support Express Associates, and the connections the Express staffing representatives make with businesses provide the team with a much deeper 58 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

understanding of the need. Gary Gallagher is at the helm of Express. Gary’s daughter, Meredith Campbell, is co-owner and has the distinctive title of Chief Joy Facilitator. This helps set the stage for what is important for this company. They have a heart-driven philosophy where they truly care about the people they work with—where doing their job right means losing their Associates that get hired by companies with whom they get placed. I had an opportunity to visit their office recently and was greeted by Meredith’s dog, WhoDey, a rather large, friendly Golden Doodle. Thank you cards line the window where Lauren, the front office coordinator, provides fast and friendly service. With a fish tank angled near computers set up for Associates to use, the office has a warm and welcoming feeling. Asheville Express is a franchise, which means they have the right to use the award-winning, successful business model and proven methods from Express Employment Professionals International, in business since 1983. With access to staffing resources and tools provided by the international company, the Asheville Express team are the experts in the local job market.

Express office, Lunch and Learn Prior to moving to Asheville in 2006, Gary had spent most of his career in sales and Human Resources with large corporations, two of which were Fortune 50 firms. After attending UNC Asheville, Gary’s oldest daughter decided to stay. With the birth of their first grandchild, and a request from his company to transfer, Gary and his wife decided he should leave the corporate world behind, and together, they would create something of their own in Asheville. When they moved here, the local Express franchise had been operating since 1997. Gary had met the owner through a networking event and decided to contact him about a job. As it turned out, the owner was interested in selling the business, and following a due-diligence period Gary took over ownership of the Asheville Express franchise in April 2007. Gary was able to lure his younger daughter, Meredith, to Asheville to potentially become part of the business. Following a process where the current Express team interviewed Meredith, she was hired in 2007 and became co-owner in 2014. While this is a true family business, Meredith runs the day-to-day operations and according to Gary, is the “oil that keeps the engine running.” Gary explains, “When Express started out, much of the focus was on industrial jobs, the hospitality sector, and more transaction-based work. Prior to 2007, the job market was candidate driven. When the recession hit in 2008, everything changed and it became more company driven, with lots of people, but not so much work.”

Over the years, a shift occurred in how Express interacted with its clients. They wanted to be the employer of choice and partner with companies, not be just another staffing vendor. For their Associates, they wanted them to reach out to the staffing team and ask for advice; they wanted to support them more broadly. Express focused on having a broader vision of the market … to grow something of value. This meant a move in direction to the healthcare industry and the professional and business services sector, not surprisingly the two areas that are at the top of the current job market growth. To help make the best decisions, both for their Associates and clients, Express offers a variety of services. For its Associates, they offer training resources, development opportunities and other programs to assist them with building the skills necessary to be successful. They also try to keep them engaged and working … the Associates, after all, are their employees. At Express, 250 300 people get a paycheck every week, with an average pay rate of $14 an hour, and they are happy when Associates are hired by Express client companies. As for supporting their clients, Express works closely with businesses to assess their needs, and then match qualified Associates who will succeed at meeting those needs. They also offer a variety of resources designed for businesses and business leaders. These include live seminars, leadership webinars and videos, white papers, and many more tools. Express conducts regular lunch and learns that are open not only to their clients, but also to other local and WNC businesses. Decision makers attend and discuss pertinent topics, many times suggested by the Express team members who may be hearing things that cross business lines. Business leaders have an opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussions, compare notes and basically talk to each other.

NC for some time now. The growth has been substantial and the opportunities numerous.

Express is a hands-on business. According to Gary, “We never send anyone to work unless our team member has been there.” It’s their belief that they need to feel the place, breathe the air, really understand what the role is, so they know who can do it best.

While Friday Staffing and Express are competitive, they are also collaborative and complement each other well. While their focus is different, together they support the WNC job market and the companies looking for the right employees. This is a perfect example of how the FBF provides networking opportunities and a chance to connect with others in similar businesses.

In the past 10 years, Express has conducted 12,430 interviews, filled 19,463 jobs, put 5,567 different people to work, and placed 1,675 different people in permanent positions. As family-owned businesses, both Friday Staffing and Express are members of the UNC Asheville Family Business Forum (FBF). Membership in this organization provides access to other family businesses in WNC and to educational events sponsored by the FBF. These events cover a wide range of information pertinent to family businesses, with the knowledge offered specific to business operations in general.

According to David, “A person has to know what field they’re looking for work in and research that field. Although Friday Staffing has many openings, we don’t have openings in all fields. Our Metro population is just not large enough to support every industry.”

For Express, it doesn’t stop there. With a focus on the community, they are engaged in helping charities where they can. Over this past holiday season, for example, their Pay it Forward Hiring Drive focused on placing as many job seekers as possible. In collaboration with area businesses, for each Express employee hired, they made a $10 donation to MANNA Food Bank where a single $10 donation provides 30 meals to those in need.

As Gary says, “People from all walks of life come through our door. Our business is about getting business life squared away; In 2000, John Modaff’s son, David, it’s about helping to put food on people’s joined Friday Staffing and in 2006 became tables.” The owners and team members at president with all operational responsibilExpress are embedded in the communiMeredith and WhoDey ity. “It has been a wonderful opportunity ty—they live here, they work here, they raise to work alongside my father and to take their families here, and they work with other what he and my mother created into the next stage. Bedroom Feng Shui for children By Jini Rayne

Most parents and other guardians of children want to do their very best to facilitate maximum growth, comfort and happiness for their young charges. Ample rest is important for a child’s overall health and is especially important for a developing brain. These feng shui tips can help in that effort. The location of a child’s bedroom within the home is very important. The farther back and higher up the location of a room in a building, the more secure and controlling the person occupying the room is. This is called “commanding position”. While we want our children to feel secure, they must not be in control of the family. That is the proper role of the responsible adult/s in charge. So if, for example, the master bedroom is on the ground floor with the children upstairs, or if the child’s bedroom is farther back in the house than the parents’, we have an imbalance in power. To rectify this imbalance, it is necessary to put a representation of the adults’ presence and energy in the 62 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

commanding position of the house. One family who had finished the attic to be a playroom, painted hand prints of the whole family on the walls with those of the children below those of the parents, thus putting the parent’s energy highest in the home. Some have chosen to display a treasured collection, toy or trophy from their own childhood in their child’s room. A young child will likely feel secure with a picture of the parent/s on the back wall of their room. You might have to hide that picture behind a poster on the wall of a teen’s room in order to assert your proper authority. The location of the bed within the room is also of importance. You want the child to be able to see the door while in bed but not be directly across from the door within the stream of chi (energy) flowing in. It is ideal for the bed to be as far from the door as possible. The bed should not be positioned under the short part of a slanted ceiling as this compresses and stunts their chi. For the same reason, bunk beds are not recommended. It is best if the head of the bed is not right next to a window. If it must be in that position, hang a multifaceted spherical feng shui crystal in the window to circulate and diffuse

If any bedroom is positioned over a garage, there will be shifting energy beneath. Because children need a firm foundation for optimal growth and development, this needs to be addressed. the chi coming in. A solid wall behind the head of the bed provides a strong sense of support and protection. It is best if there is nothing underneath the bed to inhibit the flow of nourishing energy. Under bed storage is not desirable. It is tempting for some children to shove things under their bed when hurriedly cleaning their room ( a trick I employed when trying to convince my mom that I had tidied up), but permanent storage is discouraged. Chi can circulate best if the bed is not pushed up against the wall, but often this is not possible because of space considerations. Against a wall is okay if the bed is otherwise positioned correctly. Sleep studies are showing that the light from computer, tablet, phone and TV screens interferes with the body being able go to sleep. The current recommendation is to discontinue use of all screens for at least an hour before bedtime. We have found that many children are sensitive to the electromagnetic fields in their bedrooms, especially if there are electronics close to the bed. Televisions are especially problematic. We have consulted with families that have a child who awakens with nightmares regularly at a certain time only to find that the television station last watched is playing a horror film or re-runs of “X-Files” or “Twilight Zone” at that hour. If you must leave the TV in the child’s room, unplug it and drape something over it at night. Color is also important in a child’s room. Pink is a very soothing color and used to be considered a boy’s color. Bubblegum pink is used in some prisons and holding rooms to calm the inhabitants. My guess is that none of you are going to paint a boy’s room pink, so what else is good? Green is associated with growth, so almost any shade of green will do. Any skin tone is also very soothing and reassuring, so any of those, not necessarily even yours, are good. Ideally you will use a color in the room that appeals to your child. When we lay the bagua (energy map) over a room, the area commonly called Knowledge and having to do with all learning including inner knowledge as well, is located to the left front of the base line established by the door to the room. This is a good area for the child’s study desk, a bookcase or any other symbol of learning or knowledge. Even hanging a citation for achievement in school, scouting or church reinforces the energy of this area and

encourages further growth. Speaking of the bagua, if a child’s bedroom is outside of the energy map of the home, (it is in a section of the home that juts out in front of the front door of the house) they will feel disconnected from the family. This circumstance is very disconcerting to a young child as on some level they will feel that they do not belong to the family. A disconnected bedroom might work well for an older teen or young person returning home after college as they are in the process of disconnecting from the family to establish their independence. But we have seen a case in which a teen was too disconnected from the family, getting into all kinds of trouble and disregarding guidance from the parents. So caution is advised. There is a way to use mirrors to draw the energy of the room into the home, a cure that is best implemented by a knowledgeable feng shui consultant. If any bedroom is positioned over a garage, there will be shifting energy beneath. Because it is especially important that children have a firm foundation for optimal growth and development, this needs to be addressed. Planting vines on the outside walls of the room that climb up and attach the room to the ground is one way to ameliorate this situation. One could paint a tree on the wall of the garage with the branches reaching up and supporting the floor of the room and a sturdy trunk planted in the ground. One client connected the upstairs bedroom this way and even had leaves and apples on the painted tree. Another idea is use heavy objects to weight down and ground the room. This could be heavy furniture, a statue or even big rocks for the child interested in geology. Another problem with a bedroom over a garage is that we often store toxic substances there such as garden chemicals and paints and solvents. Make sure these are well sealed and in a place where only adults can access them. Also please be aware of of moving the car out of the garage quickly after starting so as to minimize exhaust fumes. These are some of the most important feng shui tips for a child’s bedroom. Attention to these tips will help you maximize the safety, comfort and positive growth of your children. Calen has traveled extensively and spent time in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia studying with great masters of both Japanese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, with Bon and pre-literate Bon masters, with geomancers from both Celtic and Druid traditions, and with alchemists of various indigenous religions. Instruments used for his sound and energy work include dowsing rods, Himalayan singing bowls, shaman drum, ghanta and dorje, tingshas, bonpo shangs, phurbas and other ritual objects from many world wisdom traditions. Calen consults with clients around the world offering his unique blend of skill and experience as the foundation for his geomantic work with earth energies in clients’ homes and landscapes. Fine Homes and Design had the opportunity to speak with Calen about his understanding of how the energy of the earth informs our home environments and influences landscape design. FHD: You have studied with geomancers from various traditions. What does it mean to be a geomancer? 66 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

Geomancy is one of the terms used to describe work with earth energies. Earth alchemy, Zahori art, sacred landscapes, sacred geography, and feng shui are other terms one might use. The origin of the term comes from geo-, meaning earth, and -mancy, which is the ability to foresee or discern. FHD: What are the origins of these traditions? Many elements of geomancy are universally found across cultural and global borders. The tradition of reading or discerning the earth’s energy patterns is as old as humankind. It is a natural response and a matter of survival to want to understand and learn from our surroundings. Long before the development of modern scientific equipment, humans relied on their powers of perception and intuition, which were fine-tuned with the help of simple tools such as dowsing rods. In 1873, Ernest Eitel authored The Science of Sacred Landscape in Old China. In it he describes the art of feng shui and working with earth energies, which originated in the Sung Dynasty around the 12th century at the same time that European master builders were working on the great cathedrals of Europe. Yet structures for worship and ceremony in most world wisdom traditions appeared centuries earlier and were often sited according to principles of geomancy.

FHD: What are the reasons someone would want to consult with a geomancer? In ancient traditions as well as today, a geomancer would be consulted when selecting a site to locate a home. Clients seeking property for new home construction are assisted with picking the best location for a home to keep in harmony with the existing eco-field and take advantage of landscape features already present. I also assist clients with assessing an existing home before or after a purchase or remodeling project. In addition to geomancy, I have past experience as a real estate broker, appraiser, and federal housing inspector, which means my clients gain an advantage from a multi-faceted consultation incorporating a broad range of experience and expertise. FHD: You have studied in various lineages; tell me about some of your most memorable teachers. I trained with Michael Rice at the New York School of Feng Shui. Michael is a bioarchitect from Ireland whose building designs incorporate sacred geometry to bring balance and harmony to spaces. I find his designs fascinating because they Rev. certification trainings to expand my knowledge as it relates to working with eco-fields. My time living in the Himalayas training with alchemists from the first religion there was also valuable. This so-called “nameless religion” is known as “patterns of heaven and earth” or “sacred conventions,” and the core teachings deal with working with existing eco-fields using advanced mathematical principles. FHD: I have heard stones referred to as “record keepers.” From your perspective, what does this mean? Are there other tasks served by stones? Even the Bible refers to stones as “witnesses.” It is believed that stones and trees carry ancestral memories of the land they are on. They have “witnessed” all that has taken place for centuries around them, so it seems reasonable to believe they have kept “record” of their experiences. Biologists have observed the physical aspect of this record keeping in dendrochronology, the study of tree rings to answer questions about the natural world.

Rev. Dr. Calen Rayne standing by stones in Carnac, France FHD: What are some recent projects you’ve been involved with? In the last two years I have sited and installed nearly a dozen labyrinths for clients in Europe and North American, including in Orkney, on a small island off the coast of northern Scotland, at a large estate in Devon, England, and in a community space near Culemborg in the Netherlands. I have recently consulted on several home and workspace projects in Portugal, and visited various sacred sites to study their eco-fields. Europeans have a rich tradition of working with land and stones, thus my work is more mainstream in Europe, going back to days of master builders who worked on the various cathedrals and sacred sites on that continent. FHD: How long have you been a geomancer? Could you explain from your point of view what is happening when you are dowsing? I have been dowsing since I was five years old, so I have over six decades of experience to draw from when I engage a property. I believe a channel is opened that connects a dowser to a larger eco-field of information, what Rupert Sheldrake describes as a morphic field. My doctoral dissertation discusses quantum non-locality and systematic morphogenesis, based in part on Sheldrake’s work. I became more interested in working with earth energies after studying in Japan 30 years ago. Since then I have traveled extensively and completed multiple 72 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2017

FHD: What is sacred geometry and from your perspective why is sacred geometry important in landscape and home design? Working with landscapes is highly mathematical. Like interior designers, geomancers also incorporate the golden mean into their designs. It’s well known that Fibonacci numbers exist in nature, such as the golden mean spiral that appears in many patterns of nature, and can be used to harmonize frequencies in the eco-field surrounding a home. But there are variations of Fibonacci numbers like Lucas numbers and a blended set that can be used to harmonize an eco-field as well. When I engage a property, I am analyzing the invisible patterns there as well as the visible components on the property that together indicate the state of harmony and balance. I see a lot of what I do as design. I apply geomantic principles from many of the world wisdom traditions to make adjustments as needed. A guiding principle of mine is best summarized in this quote by Marko Pogacnik: “Geomancy is an ancient word denoting the knowledge of the invisible as well as the visible dimensions of the Earth and its landscapes. I refer to geomancy as ‘sacred geography.’ By ‘sacred’ I mean the

task of geomancy in our present day is not simply to foster public interest in etheric, emotional and spiritual levels of places and landscapes, but also to promote a deeper, more loving, and more responsible relationship toward the Earth, the cosmos, and toward all beings, visible and invisible.” FHD: That reminds me of the concept of forest bathing we have heard so much about recently. What’s your take on this? I have been practicing forest-bathing as long as I can remember, although when I was a child growing up in the hills of Eastern Kentucky we called it “playing in the woods.” The practice of Shinrin-yoku was developed in the 1980’s in Japan, during a time I studied there. Most of the temples I visited in Japan had a walking meditation across their grounds, which often included altars, water elements, and ornamental gardens. We try to incorporate some of these features in our sacred landscape designs to assist with necessary adjustments. FHD: In your opinion, what is the future of home and landscape design with respect to geomancy and sacred geometry? Do you see our relationship with the natural elements changing?

I believe people are becoming more aware of their surroundings and will seek to better position themselves in a larger eco-field to support them on their life journey. It seems possible that people need to come to the understanding that we are all part of an unfolding spiritual story, and that we must direct our energies toward a successful outcome for that story. I believe we are all indispensable, that we are all part of “the plan.” I once listened to a symphony orchestra perform a lengthy piece, and took note of the man sitting in the back simply turning page after page intently and not contributing. But twenty or so minutes into the piece, he adjusted his tuxedo and picked up a small triangle. As the orchestra reached a crescendo, he tapped the triangle once, and then sat back down. That “ping” may have seemed insignificant to listeners, but in the mind of the composer, something would be lost without that moment. Each of us is that “ping,” and this world needs our imagination and attention and works to enable the unfolding story of creation to manifest. My intention is to “tap the triangle” as needed when engaging a landscape to help my clients achieve their goals. For more information about Calen’s work visit www.raynemaker.com.
