Watching WNC grow for 28 years: A Snow Creek Story. By Snow Creek Landscape Services

As quoted from the Asheville Citizen’s Time article on November 16th, 1997, Tim Boone, “found a niche in the market. And with the economy roaring along for the past several years, he’s done well”. That was just over 20 years ago, when Snow Creek Landscaping was coming up on it’s 9 year anniversary. Many locals can tell you that they have seen our trucks all around town, but many don’t know the rich history and dedication that the company has been involved in throughout the years. Since opening it’s doors in 1989, Snow Creek has worked hard in creating relationships in the community of Western North Carolina, as well as helped develop the face of this beautiful land for so many commercial and residential clients.

18 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2018

The story of Snow Creek is one that starts with the child of an agriculturally rich family, one that farms their food and takes pride in their environment. As a young boy, Tim Boone watched the world around him grow and develop. With each passing season, his curiosity transformed from a more agricultural lifestyle into more of a horticultural passion - one that brings that natural world to each individual. From selling his motorcycle to start his own pepper project at a very young age, to becoming an award winning horticulturist in his early years - the fascination of how things grow and develop had became less of a hobby and interest, and more of a career. For 29 years, Snow Creek has been depicted around Western North Carolina with the image of the creek that started it all. As Tim grew both personally and professionally, he always felt a deep connection with the native land. His childhood memory of playing by the creekside on his family’s property never left him. That creek became the front and center of Snow Creek Landscaping.

Left: Tim Boone, Owner and founder of Snow Creek Landscape Services during a team meeting. Top-Right: Construction installation in Burnsville. Bottom-Right: Snow Creek’s logo for 28 years, soon to be retired.

As a creek grows and develops through the years, it carves away at the earth, leaving behind its path and rich history. Rising waters creates new twists and turns, yet uncovers the beauty that lays deep within the earth. Stones are pushed from one side to the other, building a natural sculpture in the world that constantly changes, but never loses its beauty. Like the

Creek Landscaping has developed and left its mark in the community that all of its employees call home.

Like a creek, we have developed and strengthened over the years, with a story that is constantly changing and moving foward. With each passing year, our company creates relationships both with the natural world and the people of WNC. We help our clients discover the true potential of their properties, through hard work and creativity.

" ! ! continues to grow with the surrounding Asheville area. The saplings we planted long ago have developed into massive trees with deep roots, while hardscapes have become one with the earth and built memories that last a lifetime. The positive impact on both our relationships and the environment is what we do. We are doing it with a passion and will continue to do so for years to come. When a company has been in business for as long as we have, it’s inevitable to have its ups and downs. We learn from each experience, which can guide us into the direction we choose to go as humans. As a mission, we want to go beyond just your typical landscaping company and transcend into a lifestyle. An experience that helps build a story. An opportunity to enrich lives, naturally.

The Savvy Homeowner’s 5-point Outdoor Winterization Checklist (BPT) - As temperatures drop, you’re reminded that Old Man Winter will soon rear his ugly head. Before the first flurries fly, it’s important to take some winterization steps to ensure your home is ready for whatever the season brings.

This five-point checklist will help safeguard your home against winter’s woes for another year. For additional winterization ideas and detailed project plans, visit Real Cedar.com.

If you find some gaps, it’s important to seal them quickly. Apply caulk to the openings to prevent cold air from seeping in, helping to cut down on heating bills. Plus, you won’t have to worry about bugs making your home their hibernation haven. Note: never caulk above or below the window and door openings, as this may block moisture drainage.

The amount of work you have to put into winterizing your deck depends on your decking material.

For example, a durable, long-lasting material such as Western Red Cedar requires the least amount of maintenance. That said, all decks require some upkeep. To preserve your deck’s luster, start by cleaning it with a warm, soapy solution and a soft-bristle brush. Do not power wash as this can damage the wood. It’s important that you remove all dirt and debris from the surface as well as in between the boards to improve ventilation. Next, inspect the deck for mold. If present, wash the deck with a mild oxygen bleach solution and leave on the surface for 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Finally, remove anything that might leave marks on the deck’s surface such as furniture, planters and mats.

dangerous branches now before the first snow. Be safe by using the proper equipment for tree trimming and removal, or, consider hiring a pro to do so. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and handling this issue now could prevent costly damage to your home down the road.

Clean the roof Your roof is a large portion of your home, and it also holds a lot of snow over the winter. To prevent ice dams and other roof problems when freezing temperatures arrive, it’s important to clean gutters and check your roof for problems now.

Protect planter boxes The majority of planter boxes are made with Western Red Cedar. That’s because the wood is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects; and therefore, doesn’t require treatment from potentially dangerous chemicals that can leach into soil and plants. But like all garden beds, real cedar planters need protection during the winter months. Start by removing all soil and cleaning the boxes as you did the deck. Then, if possible, store emptied planters in a garage, shed or under the porch. If you don’t have the space to store them this way, then cover them with a water-repellent tarp to protect from moisture buildup, but don’t seal the tarp. As with decks, it’s very important that you allow for proper ventilation.

Trim trees Look for weak trees or those with dead branches, particularly those near your home. As snow accumulates, the weight may bring down a tree or branches, potentially damaging your house. Eliminate this risk by removing any dead trees or

Start by taking all debris out of gutters to ensure free flow for water. Next, walk around your roof and inspect it for any damage. Repair loose shingles and make sure the chimney and vents look intact and secure. Your roof takes on a lot of weight from ice and snow during the winter months and you want it to be as strong as possible. A few simple steps now can mean a cozy, safe winter for you and your entire family. Add these five steps to your winterization to-do list for this weekend and give yourself valuable peace of mind. Infuse Life into the Bath for a Spa-like Oasis (BPT) - Today, more than ever, homeowners gravitate toward design elements that transform the bath into a spa-like oasis. Designers look to incorporate pieces inspired by the natural world to bring renewed energy into the room and create a soothing environment. From fixtures inspired by booming waterfalls, to neutral color schemes and natural light, nature infuses life back into luxury bath design for a serene sense of calm.

Neutral calm Light colors such as cool grays and muted blues evoke tranquility and peacefulness. Neutral colors for walls and fabrics create a soothing aesthetic that fosters 36 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2018

relaxation in the space. To create visual interest within a neutral palette, incorporate varying shades of earth tones to serve as complementary accents throughout the room — from decorative rugs and plush towels to cabinetry and tiling.

Nature’s inspiration Elements inspired by nature work together to produce a sense of relaxation in the home’s oasis. Intuitive in design, the Vettis Bath Collection by Brizo combines solid proportions and angular architecture with an optional four-sided open chamber that mimics the sensory experience of a waterfall. Inspired by the strength

found in nature, the defined edges of the spout create a balanced aesthetic, while subtle facets offer visual depth. Paired with natural stone accents, this collection evokes elements of natural inspiration.

Stone serenity A freestanding stone tub makes a luxurious statement to enhance the spa atmosphere. Sleek, oval architectures provide an organic contemporary touch, while rectangular basins deliver a strong geometric focal point. Take the spa-like experience even further and incorporate the use of essential oils. Lavender and chamomile reduce stress and encourage sleep, while peppermint and lemon oils increase focus and mental alertness in the morning. From modern to transitional aesthetics, a freestanding, natural stone tub paired with the sensory infusion of essential oils creates the perfect at-home getaway.

Living accents Natural lighting and live plants blur the line between the great outdoors and the enclosed space. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights serve as eye-catching accents while also naturally illuminating the room. Hanging succulents and potted bamboo plants are additional decor options to bring nature indoors without sacrificing clean, simple design. Winter 2018 | Fine Homes & Design 37

Feng Shui and Health By Jini Rayne

As we begin the new year, it is traditional to make resolutions about ways we wish to improve our life. Often some of these goals are concerning our health; we plan to exercise more, to make sure we get enough sleep, to eat more consciously, or perhaps all of the above. Too often these resolutions fall by the wayside within a few weeks. Is there any way that feng shui might help us create an environment that supports good health? Let’s take a look. In the last issue we discussed the bagua, the energy map or template that is laid over an environment and used in feng shui to determine what part of life a particular spot is influencing. While all areas of your home are important, the center is of primary importance because that is where all of the energies of the other areas around the edges come together. Since the center energetically connects to and interrelates with all of the other areas of the house, it affects your well-being and, more importantly, your health. Only if you have good health can everything else in your life reach its full potential. In traditional Chinese homes, the center was often a courtyard or atrium with the house proper built around it. This made for an open, airy environment. Therefore, 46 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2018

it is optimal if the center of your home lies in the living room, family room or another large open room. With today’s open concept plans, part of that room might be the kitchen. If the kitchen is actually in the center of the footprint of the house, the fire energy of the stove combined with the already active nature of the center area may be too intense and lead to accidents, fires, or health problems. To cure this, hang a spherical multi-faceted feng shui crystal either directly over where the cook stands while at the stove or in the center of the kitchen. To enhance the energy of the center of the house and consequently the good energy of your health, there are a few general cures. You can attract vital energy with plants. These plants should be healthy. The center is not a good place for a sickly plant. Ideally there should be an odd number of plants as odd numbers are more yang and active. Yellow is considered to be the color of health, so yellow objects or even yellow walls are invigorating to the center area. The number one, all purpose cure to use in the center of your house is to hang a feng shui crystal on a piece of red cord or ribbon cut so that its length is a multiple of 9, in the exact center of your home. The intention

is that, just as the crystal refracts and circulates light, it will circulate the energy within your home to maximize health and well-being. Since the stove is the hearth of the home where nourishment is prepared for the family, the stove is seen both as an agent of prosperity and of health. It is important that it be kept sparkling clean and be in excellent working order. It is also important that all of the burners are used regularly so as to symbolically make use of all of the opportunities for good health and wealth. The mood of the cook as he or she prepares food affects the amount of energy and nourishment

available to those eating the meal, so do what you can to keep the cook happy. The bed, as the place where rest and regeneration occur, is also important to good health. One’s bed should ideally be located in the Commanding Position within the room. This means that the bed has a headboard firmly attached to it and is positioned against the wall diagonally across from the door so that the sleeper can see the door from bed but is not directly across from it so as to be out of the “line of fire”. Electronics should be away from the bed so as to minimize the electro

magnetic field which bothers many sleepers. No water beds, electric blankets or cell phones or chargers should be near-by. It is better to have no ceiling fans directly over the bed to chop up and stir up energy. Televisions should not distract from the purpose of the room: sleep. When considering your home and its influence upon your heath, it is also useful to look at the mechanical systems of the house. The circulation of heat (and coolness) and air in the house is analogous to the circulatory system in your body. Any problems with your HVAC system may be reflected in a circulatory system problem for someone living in your home. Likewise,

the home’s electrical system is related to the nervous system in the body. Skin issues may be related to issues with the home’s siding or walls. Plumbing relates to the digestive system. Home maintenance with optimally operating systems helps all inhabitants be healthy, so fix any problems promptly as they arise. Feng shui is a method of putting oneself into harmony with the environment in order to facilitate maximum good fortune in life. It is a very practical continued on page 48 Winter 2018 | Fine Homes & Design 47

discipline. When things are not going as you wish, you list what is going well and what is not and then set intentions for achieving your ideal. Then you analyze the arrangement and flow of energy within your environment and make changes intended to improve the situation. Making New Years resolutions is very similar to setting your intention in feng shui. To facilitate achieving those resolutions, you need to do the next step and make changes in your home to remind and assist you. For example, rearranging your kitchen cupboards so that smaller plates and glasses are more readily available facilitates using those smaller dishes so that you can have the abundant feel of a full plate with the benefit of a more manageable portion size. Putting the candy dish (and any other less desirable food) away and having a fruit bowl in sight reminds you of your intention to choose healthier alternatives. Rearrange your fridge so that the foods that fit your intentions are the easiest to reach. If you intend to go exercise first thing in the morning, then have your clothes laid out and your gym bag already packed. If you are going to walk during lunch hour, be sure your walking shoes are handy. Do what you can to make it easy to establish the new patterns of behavior that you desire to bring health and prosperity to your life. Jini may be contacted at www.raynemakers.com

Harmony with Nature: Home Design in Japan by Laura Esculcas

60 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2018

Japan is a mountainous archipelago located nearly 1900 miles off the eastern shore of the Asian continent. It is made up of four main islands and several hundred smaller ones. Japan stands at the convergence of four tectonic plates, and is therefore a geologically active zone that has nearly forty active volcanoes and experiences about 1,000 earthquakes a year, making it a place where one is always aware of the power of nature. Japan’s earliest signs of agriculture date back to 5000 BCE, but the relationship between the people of the Japanese archipelago and the natural world surrounding them dates backs much earlier to when ritual structures of stone circles and standing stones were erected across the archipelago.

the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi, which is based on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. In home design, this translates to an appreciation of the imperfect, weathered, natural, simple and austere. Arising from this awareness is a flexible and impermanent philosophy of home design, incorporating natural materials, gardens and outdoor spaces whenever possible, and reminding inhabitants of the natural world by enhancing natural light and inviting harmony with nature.

Transitional Spaces: Gates, Doors, Entryways, and Hallways

The peoples of ancient Japan attributed geographical features, especially mountains and rivers, with divinity. Shinto, meaning “way of the gods,” is the oldest religion in Japan, and its key concepts of purity, harmony, family, respect, and elevation of the group over the individual are deeply interwoven into Japanese culture today. In Shinto, gods, spirits and supernatural forces, which are thought to inhabit places of beauty, govern nature in all its forms. Japanese home design is influenced by a close harmony with the natural world, as well as an awareness of and respect for the ever-present forces of nature.

Gates stand at places of transition, offering passage from one state to another, as well as separating outside from inside. Gates may be welcoming but also offer protection. In Japanese home design, traditional roofed gates separate the private spaces from the public arena, insuring privacy while welcoming nature in the form of a surrounding home garden beyond the gate. Besides gates, Japanese home design includes other types of transitional spaces. At the main entrance to a Japanese home is the genkan, a transitional space between outdoors and indoors where shoes are removed and stored, and where slippers are donned before entering the home.

Buddhist teachings have also greatly influenced Japanese home design. The three marks of existence – impermanence, suffering, and emptiness – gave rise to

Another transitional space in Japanese home design is the engawa, which are exterior, covered hallways that connect rooms and act as verandas in warm weather.

Most of the elements in a Japanese garden, such as water, stones, sand and vegetation, are more than just decoration, because they carry a meaning that has developed historically.

raked gravel surrounding stones represents ripples of waves around islands. Creating a beautiful Japanese garden in your home doesn’t require a huge amount of space. It only requires the use of these elements, no matter how large or small they may be. The way these elements are used in relation to one another creates a miniaturized version of nature. The designs of these gardens are based on three principles: reduced scale, symbolism, and borrowed view. Borrowed scenery, or shakkei, is the idea of integrating the background landscape outside the garden into the design of the garden. Another way to bring the outside in and harmonize with nature is creating a connection with the water element in the form of a bath. Public baths are an important part of Japanese culture, but today many Japanese homes have their own furo, or soaking tub, which is maintained between 100 and 108 degrees Fahrenheit. After first washing and rinsing with a handheld showerhead, one enters the furo for a relaxing and reviving soak.

Doors and thresholds symbolically and physically mark yet another point of transition, and sliding doors and shoji screens are commonly employed inside Japanese homes as window coverings, interior doors, and room dividers. Easy to slide open and made of translucent paper or plastic over a wood frame, shoji screens enhance the home’s flexibility, privacy, and natural light.

One of the most important elements of traditional Japanese home design is the tatami mat. Once used as a status symbol for the rich, tatami mats and rooms have lived on in Japanese culture, and are still used as living and sleeping spaces. Made

Elements of Nature: Gardens, Baths, and Natural Materials The Japanese aesthetic of harmony with nature means access to the outdoors is a high priority in Japanese home design, so both traditional and modern Japanese homes embrace minimal transition between indoors and outdoors. Gardens are a key feature of Japanese home design. Often designed to be enjoyed from the house, Japanese gardens utilize elements such as ponds, streams, islands and hills to create miniature reproductions of natural scenery found in grander landscapes. Most of the elements in a Japanese garden, such as water, stones, sand and vegetation, are more than just decoration, because they carry a meaning that has developed historically. For example, in rock gardens, 62 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2018

of woven rush grass around a rice straw core, they are comfortable but firm underfoot, and give off a natural aromatic scent, especially on rainy or humid days. Respect for tatami mats started the tradition of removing one’s shoes before entering a tatami room. Although many modern Japanese homes have only one tatami room, or perhaps none at all, the mats are so ingrained

in Japanese culture that, even today, many apartment and housing advertisements list room sizes based on how many tatami mats will fit in the room.

Simplicity and Flexibility: Neutral Colors, Multipurpose Rooms, and Art Tatami rooms are quintessentially simple and flexible spaces. The open feel of a tatami room is meant to provide relaxation and peace of mind. Even when a home does not have a tatami room, the aesthetic of having flexible, multipurpose rooms is an important element in Japanese home design. Shoji screens, neutral colors and minimalist art enable simplicity and flexibility of the space. Neutral and earthy tones are preferred in Japanese home design, once again bringing the home more in harmony with nature. This minimalism extends to the simple yet profound art of shodo, or Japanese calligraphy, which is one of the most popular fine arts of Japan. Calligraphy is the art of writing beautifully. The Japanese shodo master creates a work of art using a bamboo brush and

inks on the rice paper to express harmony, beauty and philosophical concepts with kanji, adopted iconographic Chinese characters used in the Japanese writing system. There is nothing casual about shodo. The beginning, direction, form and ending of the lines of the kanji are intended to express balance between elements, while the empty space in shodo art is seen to be as important as the lines themselves. Simple and graceful, kanji paintings embody the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi, and like Japanese gardens, gates, and tatami rooms, shodo is a microcosm of the greater concepts found expressed in Japanese home design.
