Adaptive Reuse: Reimagining for Sustainability By Colleen Watson

But in fact, much of the best of today’s Asheville has included taking the old and creating the new … where some see a gas station, others envision a jewelry store. Adaptive reuse or repurposing deals with conservation and sustainability. A building may no longer fit its original purpose, or perhaps the need for the original business is no longer relevant. 1920s Gas Sometimes progress gets Station before in the way and the strucreclamation to ture outgrows its design.

Spicer Greene Jewelers.

What is it about imagination that enables some to see beyond the visible to the possible? The beauty of Asheville begins with the forest covered Blue Ridge Mountains and scales down to charming historic buildings. When buildings are abandoned or put up for sale, it’s sometimes difficult to see beyond their current or former purpose. 30 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

When this happens, it’s important to look beyond its purpose to the viability of reclamation. There was a time when throwing things away and starting over or buying new was less expensive. This included tearing down buildings that were considered ‘spent’ or no longer useful. The impact of destruction, however, is greater than just the cost. From an environmental perspective, the energy required to repurpose a building is much less, as is the material waste associated with the destruction, clearing and rebuilding with new materials. Continued on page 32

Fall 2016 | Fine Homes & Design 31

The Southern Highland Craft Gallery was once the Biltmore-Oteen Bank Building As we look at some of these repurposed buildings, we’re drawn to a distinctive 1920s Art Deco gasoline station in downtown Asheville. In the early ‘80s, the owners of Wick & Greene on Wall Street reclaimed this building, transforming it into the perfect setting for a fine jewelry store. Located at 121 Patton Avenue, this building is also on the National Register of Historic Places. This fourth generation family owned business, and member of the UNC Asheville Family Business Forum, dates back to 1926 when E.O. Wick left New York and Tiffany’s to open shop in Asheville. In 1942, Paul Greene joined the business as an apprentice. It was Paul, his wife, Lucia, and their son, Michael who personally renovated this historic structure. At that same time, they restored the 1920s Seth Thomas Street Clock that still stands as an Asheville landmark. Wick & Greene was closed this summer while the historic building went through another renovation, maintaining its distinctive 1920s look, but with an eye toward the 21st century. 32 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

The new look was inspired by Michael Greene’s daughter, Eva-Michelle and her husband, Elliott Spicer (a 3rd generation jeweler from Canada). Keeping it in the family is important for Eva-Michelle, but according to the Family Business Forum, by the fourth generation, only 3% of family businesses continue to exist. It’s a testament to this family owned business that they have continued to evolve, which includes maintaining and preserving this beautiful building. In August, the store reopened as Spicer Greene Jewelers. You can find Eva-Michelle winding the clock on the corner of Patton and Otis every Tuesday and Friday. There are many factors in determining whether a building is appropriate for adaptive reuse; its importance to the community or neighborhood, for instance. The building’s historical significance plays a role as well, as with the Spicer Greene building and its status on the historic registry. If the building has been in disrepair and uninhabited for a period of time, conditions may prove to be too daunting and the cost, not only of labor and materials,

but environmentally and energetically as well, can counter the gain. In some instances, consistently inhabited buildings can experience a variety of lives. One such building is located at 152 Montford Avenue. Originally built in 1906, the simple structure served as several grocery stores, including a Piggly Wiggly. Its façade and front windows were eventually covered over and it was converted first to the Full Gospel Assembly, and in 1972, became the Pentecostal Tabernacle.

well-known in Western NC for their green building designs and adaptive reuse to handle the much-needed rehabilitation. Samsel’s design philosophy of “incorporating the unique character of Asheville and our mountain landscape into every project” inspires their work. In 2014, Samsel Architects was presented with the Griffin Award for Historic Preservation for its work on the Southern Highland Craft Guild’s new gallery. This award is presented each year by the Preservation Society

When Robert and Melissa Willingham came to Asheville from Baltimore to open an Italian restaurant, their strong sense of community drew them to Historic Montford and the building that would become Chiesa. With the slogan, Food for the Soul, the restaurant perfectly suits its home in the renovated church on the corner of Montford and Chestnut. Open for dinner only, the “homemade pasta-centered” dishes include subtle flavors that make even the most scrutinizing Italian food lover smile with delight. Chiesa means church in Italian, and with that in mind, the restaurant retained many items, such as the old church pews restored as bench seating, that serve as a perfect example of preservation through repurposing. Another excellent example of adaptive reuse is the Biltmore-Oteen Bank at 26 Lodge Street in Historic Biltmore Village. The grand character of this building is significant and provided a perfect opportunity for the Southern Highland Craft Guild to transform it into the premiere craft gallery that it is today. The two-story, brick Colonial Revival building with Georgian Revival design styles was built in 1928 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. After years of neglect, the Guild purchased the landmark building in 2012. They selected Samsel Architects,

of Asheville & Buncombe County to celebrate the stewardship of preservation in our area. It’s an opportunity to support the distinguished work done by many in the areas of rehabilitation, restoration and adaptive reuse. Seeing beyond the gas station, church, or bank has provided opportunities to embrace what came before and create something new and unique, giving the structures new life, while maintaining the energy and history of the original. And … part of the soul of the city is preserved, which cannot be recreated!

Finding History at Brunk Auctions By Colleen Watson

Robert Brunk has taken many paths throughout his life, all interconnecting and providing experiences and perspectives unique in auctioneering. After graduating from Goshen College in Indiana, Bob attended graduate school at the University of Michigan before finding his way to Asheville in search of social change. Those early activist roots led him to UNC Asheville where he taught sociology and anthropology. After teaching, he spent more than a decade as a professional woodworker and sculptor. Bob’s history as an activist, anthropologist, and artist uniquely positioned him to start Brunk Auctions in 1983. His specific expertise helped create an auction house known for its integrity and professionalism. Bob’s passion for art and handicrafts and his curiosity for the stories surrounding the pieces can also be seen in his son, Andrew, who joined him in the business in 2005. That passion and respect for history is embedded in the business of Brunk Auctions. History is something you often find at Brunk. A watercolor by Thomas Moran of Green River Wyoming sold for an exceptional amount ($1,500,000), but the story is what’s really exceptional because the painting was purchased by the family directly from the artist and handed down. Artwork similar to this watercolor was sent to Washington as a way to convince the US government to preserve some of the spectacular landscape that’s now part of our National Parks System. So this particular piece was indeed a real part of history. (Of course, the auction house cautions that most items don’t go for a million dollars!)

specialists combine their professional experience with hands on customer service. Their specific areas of expertise range from fine art, folk art, ceramics, silver, jewelry and paintings to Asian art, books, furniture, rugs and antiques. These credentials extend to Andrew and his wife, Lauren, who both had successful careers at Sotheby’s and Christie’s in New York before returning to Asheville and Brunk Auctions. Their decision was made easier by their commute and long working hours. Working so close to home they say, makes a huge difference in quality of life.

As a family business, Brunk Auctions is a member of the UNC Asheville Thomas Moran watercolor Family Business Forum (FBF). The FBF sold at auction for $1.5 million provides professional learning opportunBut history aside, what makes ities to help family-owned businesses Brunk Auctions a premier auction succeed across generations. Brunk 46 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

Sarah arranging art at Brunk Auctions gallery - All photos courtesy of Brunk Auctions According to Lauren, “The Family Business Forum provides us with an opportunity to be part of a community where family businesses are thriving. It’s a great place to network with other local businesses that we may not have an occasion to work with, but with whom we come to know and respect.” In speaking of how Asheville supports family businesses, Lauren smiles and says, “The pervasive sense of pride in what happens here in Asheville and what is made in Asheville gives great momentum to projects. We laugh about how often you go into a business or restaurant and someone will say, ‘...and I made it myself.’ But that’s a big part of the personality of our city. People roll up their sleeves and do it. They support local production in a real way. They will try the independent shop or business before the chain—as a matter of principal.” Topics discussed at FBF events consistently provide a framework for questions that need to be considered as changes continue to occur. And since its beginnings,

Brunk Auctions has seen many changes in the business. The market has changed dramatically since Brunk began operations and the level of quality they offer has also increased. As they are able to reach clients farther afield (through their website, catalogs and email), they are able to be much more selective. The use of technology—both in marketing and in the process of authentication—has also helped them stay ahead of the curve. Brunk Auctions has gone from being a local auction house to an international presence. While many of Brunk’s clients are local, the numbers of clients who bid online or by phone is increasing consistently. They might have bidders from up to 50 different countries represented in any given auction. To support this trend, they continually upgrade their technology and employ digital as well as traditional marketing techniques. Brunk’s ability to move quickly and effectively helps them provide a service that their consignors need—smooth and worry free sale of their property. Fall 2016 | Fine Homes & Design 47

Brunk has consistently been ahead of the curve. They were one of the first auction houses to supply written programs with descriptions of the items that were going up for auction. They currently produce beautiful full-color catalogs for each of their auctions, with catalogs online for buyers from around the world. But you may be wondering where all of these items come from? Sellers come to Brunk Auctions with single items, large collections and entire estates. Brunk specialists can evaluate property by reviewing photographs of the items or for larger collections or estates, they may see the items in person. Condition, provenance (history of ownership), and market trends are important factors for consideration. Live auctions are held in the sale room of Brunk’s facility on Tunnel Road in Asheville. The 26,000-foot multimedia auction gallery houses the items to be auctioned. Brunk offers a variety of bidding options. People can attend in person, or many participate from around the world via phone or the internet. The secure bidsquare.com website is used for absentee and online bidding. There’s even something called ‘Left Bid’ that provides the bidder with an option to leave a maximum bid in advance, enabling a proxy to take their place in the audience, bidding as if they were ‘you’ and maintaining the integrity of the bidding process. The staff at Brunk Auctions is always available to answer your questions or assist you in any way.

to decorate their home in full-on Colonial Revival style, but what you do see is the desire to find a few signature items—things that make a statement. It’s all about that quirky mix and match.” And at Brunk Auctions, you never know what you’ll find. From the unique to the quirky, or from the eclectic to the antiques, Lauren says, “It’s really about that one item that has a story that resonates with you personally.” And dollars aside, Brunk recently sold a Chinese jade table screen for $1,200,000. According to Lauren, “The thing that was amazing was that it was on a local client’s shelf and they brought it in for an evaluation—with no sense of its tremendous value.”

Chinese Jade Table Screen sold at auction for $1.2 million

Brunk’s success is tied to its team of professionals, its innovative ideas and business model, and the technological advances that have been implemented over the years. Being in Asheville has also provided benefits. As Asheville continues to grow, with the largest demographics being seniors and millennials, Lauren was asked how this influx of people is impacting Brunk Auctions. Her response is very thoughtful. “It’s interesting because these two segments of the demographic timeline represent the two areas we look to for the future of Brunk Auctions. For the most part, seniors are the sellers. Many collectors have wonderful things that they have lovingly accumulated over decades. They are now downsizing and may have significantly more than their children care to absorb and often those children have already filled their own homes. “The millennials are the next wave of buyers and Brunk Auctions works at bringing them to a place of comfort with the auction process as well as an appreciation of fine things. It’s unlikely you will find a 28 year-old who aspires 48 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

Giving back is also important. Brunk Auctions has a long history of supporting the environment (solar panels adorn their gallery roof and biodegradable packing is used in shipping) and contributing to Asheville’s non-profits. Their matching grants program benefits institutions that work with children, families and the environment. In every auction, Brunk designates a beneficiary and offers matching funds for any donation to that organization. Brunk’s thought is that even the small things make a huge difference; whatever you are able to contribute will make an impact.

At Brunk Auctions, you’ll find history, culture, some remarkable stories, and even come to understand how some objects change as we move into the future. It’s an interesting glimpse into the past. Robert Brunk is now President Emeritus and continues to contribute his expertise as an Auctioneer, Andrew Brunk is President and Auctioneer, and Lauren Brunk serves as Vice President, Museum Services. You can also find Andrew on the Emmy Awardwinning PBS series, Antiques Roadshow where he serves as an appraiser for Fine and Decorative Arts, Folk Art, furniture and family antiques. Catherine Anderson: Inside the Creative Photographer’s Home Studio by Laura Esculcas

One of North Carolina’s leading creativity facilitators, Catherine Anderson is an artist, teacher, and author of The Creative Photographer. Her creative journey has taken her from Durban, South Africa, to Charlotte, North Carolina, and from attorney to artist, author, photographer and teacher of creativity workshops and retreats around the world. After successfully running a photography franchise out of her house for nearly 10 years, Catherine sold her business and invested in herself and her creative vision by building a studio onto her home. Now, as a “creative mid-wife,” Catherine assists her clients in giving birth to their creative vision while guiding them to express themselves in the world. She has trained and certified with world-renowned wisdom and creativity teachers. At her studio in Charlotte, NC, Catherine teaches SoulCollage®, Creativity, Visual Art Journaling, Book-making and Photography, facilitates the labyrinth and has recently begun hosting workshops by well-known artists and writers from across the country. Fine Homes and Design had the opportunity to sit down with Catherine and find out what it takes to build a home studio and bring a creative vision to life. FHD: Why do you think is it important to carve out a space for creativity at home? CA: I think we all deserve a space of our own in our homes. To me the most important thing is being able to become who you came here to be, and so you need a space that can support you in discovering who that is. When we have a home, every room in the home is generally a compromise, because most of us are sharing it with someone else. Often, the only family members who get to choose what their room will look like are the kids who have their own bedrooms. Even when we are arranging the formal lounge or the TV room, we almost always have other people in mind and are thinking about how our 74 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

guests respond to the space. And if we have small children, we’ll specifically put a place aside for them to play in, such as a playroom, but we rarely consider creating a room just for us. It doesn’t really matter whether you’re painting or whether you want a place just to sit quietly - for instance, a meditation space or a corner to read in having a space of our own allows you, I believe, to become who you came here to be. Your space reflects you, and the things you add to the space that make you feel joyful – maybe a painting from a friend or books that you absolutely love - those things you choose for your surroundings reflect you back to yourself, and really support you in what it is you want to do in this life.

I love the word studio because even if you don’t think you’re an artist, to me there is something very enticing about having a studio. You don’t have to call your creative space a studio - if you’re more inclined, you might choose to use the French word atelier, meaning workshop, or take a word from another language and use it your own way. Think of it as your artisan space, like in Europe in the days when the artisan lived above his workshop. The workshop was the space where the creative work was done, and it was usually at street level directly beneath the artisan’s home. The artisan’s creative work was his livelihood and it supported the whole life of the artisan, so it also made sense that the workshop was on the ground floor – literally grounding the artisan’s life, just as having a creative space at home can act as a grounding space supporting you in your life. FH&D: Is it necessary to add on a home studio, or can one use any space in the home for creativity? You know, to me a house has to be used, and to have a home with rooms just sitting unused, well, can you imagine how lonely that is for the rooms that people never go into? Or if they go into them once a year or twice a year, or on special occasions, is to me is a waste of a space. So you can definitely make any space into a creative space in your home. I haven’t always had the studio. In South Africa, before we moved here, we had a much bigger house and I consciously created a sewing room for myself because that was my creative outlet in South Africa. I was an attorney during the day and I would come home and if I didn’t get to spend half an hour or an hour in my sewing room, just moodling around, touching fabric, or sewing a bit, it was as if I was off balance. The sewing room was my way of coming back to my center every day. It was a very small room, and I’d had cupboards put in, so all my fabrics were organized and there were places for my

things. It wasn’t as creative as this space I have now, but it was my space. When we arrived in the North Carolina, I really wanted a sewing room, but we didn’t have the space. I didn’t let that stop me, because I knew I needed a place where I could come back to center. We had a guestroom, but my mum was coming to visit for three or four weeks at a time, and my in-laws were visiting, too, and so on. So the closet of the guest room became my sewing closet and I used that for my sewing machine and my bits and pieces – and when guests weren’t there I could just expand into the room. The dressing table became my sewing table and I’d put a big board over the bed and put everything on that. That’s what I did to start off with. These days most people have a table in the kitchen and rarely use the formal dining room, so if you have a formal dining room and it’s just sitting there, why can’t that become an art studio? And especially if you’ve got small kids, you can create a little corner for them, so they will have their own little art space. I also think that we’re brought up to believe that the house has to be really tidy, but, well, that’s not a lived-in house. To me a house has to support you, that’s what it is there to do. If tidiness is part of that support then that’s different, but if you’re focused on the tidiness for other people, then it’s not supportive. If your space is in the main flow of the house or visible from the front door, you can always put doors on the room, put up a sign that says creative work in process, or use drapes and pull them to the side when you don’t want to close off the space. FH&D: Besides having a place where you could come back to your center every day, what changed in your life and work after you built your home studio? CA: I know that I would not have done the creative work that I have done – I certainly would never have written my book The Creative Photographer if I hadn’t had this space. It was only once I had my studio space that I even knew that I wanted to write a book. Writing my book was really a way of remembering what I had learned and remembering what it was I wanted to bring into my photography, because life moves so fast that it’s easy to forget things. While I was writing the book, I stopped teaching for four months, and every day I would come in here and work on new projects for the book. The tables were full of stuff and it gave me a sense of continuity because it was my space where I could leave everything and return to it again and again, without feeling that, for instance, I had to clear the table because the family needed dinner or there were visitors coming so I had to tidy up and put things away. When the creative work gets put away, then you really have to start from scratch again. Having the space allows for creative continuity. It allows that flow that you need when you’re doing something creative and you leave something knowing where you’re going to start the next day. A home studio or creative room paves your way in. Just as the space is a mirror and a support to us, when we enter that space there’s almost a subconscious switch that goes on inside us that says, “it’s time to create.” It goes back to finding your center so you can become who you came here to be. FH&D: From your experience, what advice do you have for someone interested in creating a home studio, or for those who would like to have a creative space at home? CA: First ask yourself: What are my creative interests? What am I looking for from the space? Do I want a space where I can sit in meditation? Do I want a library corner? What do I want to do in my creative space? For instance, I love libraries; I’ve always loved libraries, and so my whole life I have wanted a room that was a 78 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

library. And though I tried, putting bookshelves in the bedroom, for example, I just never had one. So when I decided that I was going to add on the studio, it was really important to make sure that I had a library. One of the first things I bought were all the bookshelves, which also gave me a way to divide the room into sections. It’s a 600 square foot addition, and it’s just one big square room, so the bookshelves gave me a way to divide it into sections. I have all these interests, so I created places to nurture my interests: a library section, a sewing section, a computer station, and a teaching area, which is also my creative space. I meditate in my library section. I have a lot of books autographed by the authors, which I love because their energetic imprint is on the book. As I meditate surrounded by my books, I literally feel like I have these people here supporting me. So before you create a home studio, take some time to reflect on what activities nurture you and your creativity, and aim to design a space to support that. Second, find that under-utilized space in your house – that lonely, rarely used room – and befriend it by claiming it, or a portion of it, for your creative space. I might look at bedrooms, for instance. Bedrooms can sometimes be really big rooms, but they are the rooms you go into at night and you sleep in. So whether it is a big room or small room doesn’t really make much difference if all you’re doing is sleeping there. So there is also this idea of looking around your house and saying, just because we say it’s a bedroom, should it be a bedroom? Is that the best use for it? Maybe there is another, smaller room that I can put my bed in, so this huge room can be my creative space, my living space – the space I am really living in. Third, set your intention for the space. Ask yourself: what is my intention for this space for me and for anyone else who is going to enter it? Write out your intention and inaugurate the space in a way that reflects its purpose as well as who you are. When I built this room on, I wrote

intentions in the floor before it was completed, creating a big mandala with intentions on the ground. I wrote intentions in the wood all the way around the studio while it was being constructed. There were all these different intentions, like here people are able to follow their own creativity, people find healing in this space, and I can sustain and afford to pay for my daughter to go to college through what I do in this space. Then before I did anything in my studio, I held a blessing ceremony. There was nothing in the space. My friend Jennifer and I created a big mandala out of shells, glitter, and all sorts of things, so there was a lot of intentionality that went into the creating of the studio, which I do think has meaning. One of the things Jennifer got me to do was write out my intentions, so I actually have them up in the studio, both the intention for me in this space and the intention for others in this space. FH&D: I have often heard friends say that they are not creative. In your opinion, are some people just born with it while others aren’t? What suggestions do you have for someone who is just beginning to explore her creative side? CA: Every one of us has the capacity to create; it’s just that we forget it when we get too serious. We often stop nurturing our creativity when we start focusing on making a living. Learning to let yourself be creative and doing creative things really helps you to do analytical work, too, it supports a balancing of the left and right brain. I learned with photography that you take picture from different angles – on the ground, or up above – and when you are doing that you start to see that things look different depending on where you’re standing and how you’re looking at it. I think creativity does that; it makes you realize that there is not just one way of approaching something. There are an infinite number of ways, but we get into these ruts in our brain. Nourishing your creativity enhances problem-solving capacity, because in order to be a problem solver, you need to use your creativity. So, the first thing you have to do to be creative on a regular basis is to find a space in your house that you can set up as your creative space. It begins by looking at yourself in a different way, as someone who has a creative capacity,

and at your house in a different way, too, and seeing where it can support what you want to birth into the world. Ask yourself what you want to leave behind: what is my legacy going to be and where am I going to get that support from my house, from the structure that I am in? Just in the act of creating the space in the first place, you are acknowledging your creative side is real. Your creative space becomes your touchstone for all that you love. It supports you to get in touch with a more essential part of yourself. Some people do what they love, but some of us lose touch with what we love. But if we have a space we can go back to, one that reflects back to us those things that make us feel whole and make us feel alive, we will never forget it. FH&D: You have described yourself as a “creative mid-wife assisting others in giving birth to their creative eye and guiding them to express themselves in the world.” What has helped and guided you to express yourself in the world? CA: For me, my studio space is a playroom; it really is my playroom. I really believe that every woman should have a playroom. It could be her space to do yoga, or dance, or paint, or whatever it is that nourishes her. If we want to see the world with a sense of wonder and awe, it’s important that we have a way of approaching life that is playful. The Artist’s Way is one of the defining books in my library. I read it over 20 years ago in South Africa and it gave me permission to play. It taught me that creativity isn’t about being an artist and making a living out of it, but about just doing what brings you joy. And what happens if you do that? Everything else just sort of falls into place. Being able to release your creativity frees a bit of that essence of who you are and then you can see it and get to know it and know who you are. When we’re children, we have all these things that we love and we’re passionate about, and as we grow older we forget them. But really those things that we were drawn to as children were showing us what brought meaning into our lives. So to have a space where you can go back to those things becomes the place that guides you to rediscover and share your true essence with the world. The Business of Feng Shui By Jini Rayne Feng shui is a method of bringing balance and harmony to one’s environment. One important rule in feng shui is that the more time one spends in an environment, the more influence it will have upon your life. This is one reason the layout of your bedroom is so important, for example. Another spot where many of us spend a large percentage of our life is our workplace. So it is imperative that we take a good look at how we can make this as supportive as possible. There are many layers of analysis a feng shui professional will employ in looking at a business including the surrounding area, the building or buildings housing the business, the suite or area within the building under the control of the business, and the layout within. Orientation to the cardinal directions, relative positioning to the entrance of the property, health of vegetation in the area, sounds, colors, etc, etc. would all be considered. 84 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

To keep this simple and easily useful, let’s just look at a single room office as that is what many of us will have under our control. When taking a new position, it is auspicious to get a new desk of appropriate size. Accept a used desk only from someone who has been successful or had good fortune, perhaps receiving a promotion. If you inherit a desk from someone with less than a wonderfully successful career, keep a healthy green plant on it to lift the energy and counteract any negativity. Healthy plants increase life energy in a space and can also help keep the air fresh. It is important that the desk be placed in what is commonly referred to as a “commanding position”. This means that when you are sitting at your desk you can see the door and what is coming in, but not be directly in line with the opening so that you are constantly being bombarded with incoming energy. It is best if your back Continued on page 86

is to a wall for strong support, with nothing behind you to distract a visitor’s attention from you. Remember to arrange your work space so that you do not have to turn your back to the door to work on a computer or do some other part of your job. If you must turn for some regular part of your work, have a shiny object positioned so that you can see the reflection of the doorway as you work. You essentially want a rear view mirror. If you must have a window behind you, have curtains or blinds on it so that the light from the window does not put your face in relative darkness and cause you to “lose face”. Place full spectrum bulbs in your lamps and ceiling lights if you can as all of us function better in natural light. 86 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

When moving into a new office, pay close attention to the fate of the previous occupant. If you have a choice, opt for the office of a successful person. To avoid a loss of power and losing your job, do not sit at a desk next to or near the back door. Within your office you can make adjustments to improve specific aspects of your work experience. To boost interpersonal harmony, place a multifaceted spherical feng shui crystal on your ize that you take correct action and are increasingly productive. Expand your thinking and creativity with a pair of mirrors. Visualize that each time you pass between them, your thinking and creativity expands and you have more prosperity generating ideas. Place these mirrors opposite each other in one of three areas: on both sides of the entryway into the

business or your personal office, on the walls on either side of where you sit at your desk,on both sides of your entryway at home. There are other cures you can do at home to boost your work life whether you work in an office or some other setting. Pay particular attention to the career area of the energy map (bagua) of your home. The bagua resembles a tic-tac-toe board, with three rows of three sections. Your career area is the third of your house in the center front. Make sure that there is no clutter and that chi flows smoothly in this area. Also be sure that your front door opens easily, and that open your front door daily. A stuck front door or one that is never used can mean that opportunities have a difficult time reaching you. Since the element associated with this area is water, you could place a fountain there and visualize that your career is growing and expanding, flowing smoothly like the water. Or you could introduce the water element by hanging a picture of clear moving water and visualizing your career moving along successfully. To awaken career energy and call opportunities to you, place a pleasant sounding wind chime in the career area of your home or bedroom and visualize that the chime is calling out your message and activating career chi. To spread word about a new business venture, service or career move, hang a wind chime above the spot where you stand in front of the stove when cooking. Ring this chime nine times each day, visualizing that the word is going out and interested people are hearing about your venture. Attract healthy, living chi energy to the career area of your home by scattering bird seed or hanging bird feeders outside this area. Visualize the positive results that you wish to see in your career. Make sure that all vegetation outside this area is healthy and thriving as well. Remember that when you do your visualization along with your cure, you visualize the positive results you desire as already having happened. You do not want to reinforce wanting something, but rather the feeling of already having it. As has been said many times, the best prayer is always “Thank you. Most of these tips can apply to a home office as well as one in a more formal business setting. Maximizing the comfort and support of your work setting will have a tremendous positive effect upon your success. Fall at the Biltmore Estate 92 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2016

ombine the stunning architecture of Biltmore House against a background of maple, elm and oak trees in the midst of changing seasons, and you have a location like no other to capture photos of western North Carolina’s annual fall leaf show. Biltmore House and its surrounding grounds offer a photographer’s dream setting for getting fall color photos packed with huge “Wow!” factor. The folks who work at the Estate have put together some of their favorite photo-opp spots. Consider them as you scout locations for album-ready photography: The Rooftop of Biltmore House – The Rooftop Tour provides you with a bird’s eye view after a climb up the Observatory’s spiral staircase and onto the balconies and rooftop of the 250-room house. At 70-plus feet above ground, you have a primo spot to snap shots of the statue of Diana across the Vista and the perfect summit from which to spy autumn-hued chrysanthemums sunning in the Walled Garden. Top of the Rampe Douce – The Rampe Douce is a wide,

graduated stairway zigzagging along a rough-cut limestone wall across the wide front yard from Biltmore House. The Rampe’s location allows for fitting the entire front of the house inside your viewfinder. Statue of Diana – Beyond the Rampe Douce and up the hill, the statue of Diana stands at the perfect vantage point and elevation for capturing a majestic view of Biltmore House with sky and mountains in the background. The South Terrace Tea House – The wide open terrace gives you long-range views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in one direction and the Black Mountains in the other. At its edge perches a limestone teahouse with panoramic views of the deerpark, Lagoon and Mount Pisgah at 5,897 feet, the highest peak in the distance. The Loggia – This location is on the back of Biltmore House, accessible on the ground floor right off of the Music Room. The Loggia is an open-air porch with soaring arch ways above an ornate balcony. A favorite of wedding photographers, the Loggia overlooks the deerpark with views of the carriage ride trail across the fields. This setting served as backdrop for many Vanderbilt family photos.
