Coming soon: Hendersonville’s Art on Main fest The Arts Council of Henderson County and the Art on Main Committee will host 30 new artists in the 52nd annual Art on Main Festival, set for October 1 and 2 along Hendersonville’s historic Main Street. Hours are 10am – 5pm both days. Among the new artists this year are Larry Brown (wood) of Spruce Pine, Caroline Kwas (oils) of Spring Hill, Florida, and Rachel Wilder (jewelry) of Asheville. Larry’s “studio furniture” reflects his 34 years of experience in his dramatic yet elegant work. Caroline Kwas paints with oils on birch panels with inspiration coming from the beaches of Montauk, NY. Rachel Wilder incorporates sterling silver, gold-filled, brass and oxidized copper into her pieces of jewelry drawing inspiration from nature and travel. “While the returning artists offer our patrons the opportunity to see and purchase from a known artist,

the arrival of new artists and their work helps to keep the show fresh and new each year. We are very excited about the energy these individuals will add to the show,” says Kim Adams, co-chair of Art on Main. Live Art Demonstrations will take place in front of the Historic Court House on Main Street on both days and will include spinning, weaving and felting provided by the Heritage Weavers of Henderson County (they will even have sheep and a bunny as part of their educational presentation!); wheel-thrown and hand built pottery; painting in several different styles including watercolor and oils; blacksmithing, a raku firing and an iron pour by students from Blue Ridge Community College; jewelry making; gourd art and clay sculpting; stained glass by the WNC Glass Crafters; and woodturning by Southern Highland Craft Guild member, Joe Ruminski. Artists will take time to explain their processes and motivation and will have finished work for sale. “Festival-goers will have the chance to learn about how an artist goes about the creative process, and to see it happen first hand,” said artist and Art on Main co-chair Kim Adams. These demonstrations help to bring the artist’s work directly to the public.” Art on Main, in its 52nd year, is one of the region’s most popular outdoor arts festivals. Artists from the southeast region and beyond will be participating in the 2011 Art on Main, exhibiting a mix of contemporary and traditional fine art and crafts. Chimney maintenance for warmth and safety

By: Wendy Paris ©HouseLogic.com Chimney maintenance and a fireplace inspection can make the difference between warm safety and drafty danger. Your fireplace, the most low-tech piece of equipment in your house, may seem like a simple load-and-light operation, but ignoring annual maintenance can impair its performance, leading to heated air (and dollars) blowing out the chimney, harmful smoke inside, and possibly even a chimney fire. The average number of annual U.S. home fires caused by fireplace, chimney, and chimney connectors between 2003 and 2005 was 25,100, and the average costs for those fires was $126.1 million, based

on the most recent statistics from the Chimney Safety Institute of America. That's roughly $5,024 in damage per home. Annual chimney maintenance removes flammable creosote, the major cause of chimney fires, and identifies other performance problems. Is it worth the $205 fee, two-hour service call, and all that ash possibly blackening your carpet? Here's what you need to know to decide. Annual inspections keep flames burning right Creosote-combustible, tar-like droplets-is a natural byproduct of burning wood. The more wood you burn, the wetter or greener the wood, and the more often you restrict airflow by keeping your fireplace doors closed or your damper barely open, the more creosote is produced. Soot build-up, while not flammable, can hamper venting. One half-inch of soot can restrict airflow 17% in a masonry chimney and 30% in a factory-built unit, according to the CSIA (http://www.csia.org). Soot is also aggressively acidic and can damage the inside of your chimney. The more creosote and soot, the more likely you are to see signs of chimney fireloud popping, dense smoke, or even flames shooting out the top of your chimney into the sky. Chimney fires damage the structure of your chimney and can provide a route for the fire to jump to the frame of your house. "If the chimney is properly maintained, you'll never have a chimney fire," says Ashley Eldridge, the education director of

the CSIA. The best way to ensure your chimney isn't an oil slick waiting to ignite? Get it inspected. Three inspection levels let you choose what you need A level-one inspection includes a visual check of the fireplace and chimney without any special equipment or climbing up on the roof. The inspector comes to your house with a flashlight, looks for damage, obstructions, creosote build-up, and soot, and tells you if you need a sweep. If so, he'll grab his brushes, extension poles, and vacuum, and do it on the spot. "You should have it inspected every year to determine if it needs to be swept. Add a sweep, and you're talking another $80, or about $205 for both services, according to CSIA. Consider a level-two inspection if you've experienced a dramatic weather event, like a tornado or hurricane; if you've made a major change to your fireplace; or bought a new house. This includes a levelone investigation, plus the inspector's time to visit the roof, attic, and crawl space in search of disrepair. It concludes with a sweep, if necessary, and information on what repair is needed. The price will depend on the situation. A level three inspection is considered "destructive and intrusive" and can resemble a demolition job. Less dense woods like spruce or white pine burn well if sufficiently dry, but you'll need to add more wood to your fire more often, according to CSIA. •Wood, only wood! Log starters are fine for getting your fire going, but they burn very hot; generally only use one at a time. •Close your damper when not using the fireplace to prevent warm indoor air-and the dollars you're spending to heat it-from rushing up the chimney. •On a factory-built, prefab wood-burning fireplace, keep bifold glass doors open when burning a fire to allow heat to get into the room. •Have a chimney cap installed to prevent objects, rain, and snow from falling into your chimney and to reduce downdrafts. The caps have side vents so smoke escapes. A chimney sweep usually provides and can install a stainless steel cap, which is better than a galvanized metal one available at most home improvement retailers because it won't rust, says Anthony Drago, manager of Ashleigh's Hearth and Home in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. •Replace a poorly sealing damper to prevent heat loss. "You can get a top-mounted damper that functions as a rain cap, too, an improvement over the traditional damper because it provides a tighter closure," says CSIA's Eldridge. •Install carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors in your house-near the fireplace as well as in bedroom areas. •If you burn more than three cords of wood annually, get your chimney cleaned twice a year. A cord is 4-feet high, by 4-feet wide, by 8-feet long, or the amount that would fill two full-size pickup trucks. •To burn fire safely, build it slowly, adding more wood as it heats and keeping your damper completely open to increase draw in the early stages. Burn the fire hot, at least occasionally-with the damper all the way open to help prevent smoke from lingering the fireplace and creosote from developing. By the way, fireplaces aren't officially rated for energy efficiency because they're so varied. Depending on the source of information, they can be 10% to 30% efficient in converting fuel to heat. No inspection will turn a masonry or factory-built fireplace into a furnace, but it can improve efficiency somewhat, decrease the amount of heating dollars you're sending up the chimney, and increase your enjoyment of your hearth time by reducing smoke. If a sweeping prevents a chimney fire, you're talking about the difference between another ordinary January day, and the potential loss of your home, or even life. Refinancing: it’s more than lowering your payments By: Barbara Eisner Bayer ŠHouseLogic.com Naturally, if you're paying 6% for your mortgage and you can refinance at 5%, you're gonna do it. Although cutting your monthly payment remains an important motive, there are at least five other reasons to consider a mortgage refinance, for long-term savings and convenience. 1. Change your mortgage term If you decrease the term of your mortgage in a refinance by going from a 30-year to a 15-year, you'll pay a lower interest rate and shorten your total interest costs. You'll build home equity more quickly, and pay off your loan sooner, even though your monthly payments go up. 2. Move from an adjustable rate to a fixed rate ARMs offer low introductory rates, but they also offer long periods of uncertainty that make it hard to budget. It makes sense in a mortgage refinance to go from an ARM to a fixedrate loan during a low-interest rate environment. You'll get emotional security and your rate won't fluctuate with changing economic conditions. 3. Take out cash With a cash-out mortgage refinance, you can turn an intangible asset-accumulated home equity-into a tangible one-cash. It makes sense for a project that will generate long-term benefits, like a home improvement or funding a child's college education . However, don't do it for frivolous reasons. Unless you're extremely disciplined, you could find yourself in even deeper debt.

4. Consolidate two mortgages When interest rates are low, a mortgage refinance lets you consolidate your main mortgage and an outstanding home equity loan to realize a lower overall monthly payment. Plus, you'll have only one mortgage payment to make each month. 5. Recover from divorce If your home is jointly owned with your soon-to-be ex-spouse, a mortgage refinance will turn a joint obligation into the responsibility of the person keeping the home. Nothing is more frustrating than tracking down a former spouse who doesn't keep up with his or her end of the mortgage payment. Lay the groundwork If one of these reasons resonates with you, contact your current lender to see if it'll offer you preferred rates or reduced closing costs on a mortgage refinance. But don't assume the current lender is best: Leave no stone unturned by searching for lenders online and calling community banks and local credit unions. No matter which lender you choose, a mortgage refinance for the right reasons can save you lots of money-and that's the best reason of all. The sooner you accept the fact that you will be owing money for awhile the quicker you will begin to enjoy your life and your home. So just ‘fuhgettaboutit’ and start signing the mortgage papers…it only hurts a few minutes

Energy rebates from your utility company By: Karin Beuerlein ©HouseLogic.com Surprise: Your utility may offer big-time energy rebates to offset the cost of energy-efficient retrofits. When it comes to managing your household energy costs , you'd think your electric and gas utility would be the last place to look for help. After all, why would they pay you to use less energy? Because regulations now give them financial rewards for meeting energyefficiency goals. Even though it costs about one-third to one-fourth less to save a kilowatt hour through conservation than it does to build, fuel, and operate a new power plant, utilities resisted conservation programs for years, says Martin Kushler, senior fellow with the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Instead, they opted to finance new plants over the long term and pass along the costs to all of us as higher rates-until regulators stepped in. What energy rebates are available through your utility? Some are small-say, a $20 rebate after you purchase a programmable thermostat (http://www.houselogic.com/articles/no-sweat-programmable-thermostats-save-energy-costs/). Others range

Get your utility to slash home energy audit price Paralyzed by all the potential rebate options? Get an energy pro to come to your house and tell you exactly which energy-efficient retrofits will be costeffective for you.

Some utilities: •Offer free in-home energy evaluations performed by utility staff. •Give a rebate against the price of an energy audit conducted by an independent pro. •Rebate part of the cost of any recommended improvements. In California, for example, Pacific Gas & Electric offers up to $4,000 in rebates for any household that receives an energy audit, implements the recommended changes, and achieves a 15% reduction or more in energy consumption. The auditor will advise you on the potential cost of recommended improvements vs. the money they'll save you on your energy bills. If your utility rebates part of the cost of those improvements, the return on your investment will come much faster. It's definitely worth checking out-especially if the audit is free or at a reduced cost.
