Getting Your Hands Dirty at Harvest House by Kathleen O’Neil
One of Asheville’s best kept secret is housed in the basement of Harvest House. Harvest House is a Recreation Center located at 205 Kenilworth Road and is part of the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department. It offers lots of activities directed toward seniors. At street level the center has a pool room and a large and a small multipurpose rooms. On a lower floor, there are several studio/classrooms; one used for a weaving class, and a huge, complete wood shop. Lastly — and the well kept secret — there is a room where ceramic sculpture is taught. On any Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9:00 to noon, the sculpture classes meet in the downstairs (basement) studio, which is a moderate sized, well lit room. Peek inside and you will see a class constructing a variety of completely different works: a dog in a magician’s hat, a hippo waiting to be fired, a teapot shaped like a sumo wrestler, Sisyphus trying to push his burden up a mountain of Plexiglas, or a winged heart and a couple fat pigs. In other words, just about anything or everything goes! Guided by teacher Jim Kransberger, students of various professional backgrounds and experiences work to bring their ideas into a three dimensional expression. November 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
Kransberger started working in clay in 2013 and, like all his students, he has a varied background. From his professional life in sales, photography and publishing, Kransberger brings a set of skills that encourage those of his students who want to explore making and selling their work professionally to test that water. To that end, several of his students are applying to and getting accepted in regional shows. From his artistic life, Jim brings experience not only in clay but in automata, wood sculpture and paper mache. His sculptures are shown in a number of galleries in the Southeastern United States. His combination of experiences enables him to guide rather than direct his students, and encourage them to explore their own vision. The most unique aspect of these classes is that there is little regimentation and little structure; no pinch pots that need be made. Each student brings their own subject matter and work at their own speed. All assignments are self generated by the students themselves. No one gets bored with continued on page 7

doing kindergarten subject matter, unless that is where their interest lies. Classes use low-fire clay, underglazes and their own tools, which students can purchase locally. There are no written-in-stone ceramic rules that cannot be ignored. Each class, be it Tuesday or Thursday, continues to have a core group of students, but there is always room for a new student, or at worst, a spot on a waiting list. The atmosphere is warm and informal. Previous experience is not necessary and beginners are welcomed. Students range from experienced sculptors to people who have never dabbled in clay before. If you are interested in trying something new, or looking for a community of like-minded artists, this might be your new home away from home. The class takes occasional field trips to galleries, studios
and artists’ homes. In the past year, they have visited Penland School several times, gone to Atlanta the regional portion of the national American Craft Show, a gallery tour, and explored several local artists’ studios. The City of Asheville provides the driver and a van for transportation for a nominal fee, and, if there is room, “significant others” may hitch a ride. Camaraderie and common interests have led to parties held in various students’ homes. Kransberger has also arranged several shows of the classes’ work, including two at the North Asheville branch of the Public Library, and one at Miya Gallery in Weaverville.
If you are an Asheville City resident, the cost of the class is $80 for each two month session; for people who live outside the city limits, the cost is $90. The class boasts a rather new kiln and is considering buying a new slab roller very soon; and — if you are nice to them — they will loan of a few tools in case you forget to bring your own . . . on occasion. The measure of the class can be checked by slow rollover within the student ranks. There isn’t much. It is a great bunch people, having a very good time, doing what they enjoy in a nice little, family like, group. Ee Contact Jim at (828) 505-1907, if your muse so moves you. Muscle Health - Something That Needs More Attention as You Age Do you know that your muscular system keeps the body in a stable position against the pull of gravity? Your muscular system is what allows your body to make movements. From little movements such as smiling to big moves such as running, muscles are the controlling force of your body. There are some muscles that you can control, such as the biceps, while others work without conscious effort. For instance, the muscles that help you breathe! But there are some people who do not understand the importance of maintaining muscle health and prefer to neglect it until old age. If you belong to the group that does not consider maintenance of muscle health imperative, you are most likely to suffer in your old age.
Why maintaining muscle health is crucial as we age? As soon as you enter your late 40s, your entire body faces dramatic changes. This is because your muscles, joints and
bones age as the years pass too. These changes then impact your well-being and lifestyle inevitably. And with that, you face lower mobility, flexibility and independence. Unhealthy muscles start to shrink and as you age, you start losing muscle mass even more. It’s all downhill from there onwards. While you may call it a natural process, the rate is much faster when a sedentary lifestyle is part of the equation!
Problems Related to Weak Muscles in Old Age The loss of muscle mass is directly connected to decrease in muscle strength. As we go on in our lives, this decrease in muscle strength causes the bones to get affected and we start continued on page 10

losing bone mass as well. As a result, your joints get affected and you not only start losing mobility but also become prone to many age-related problems such as arthritis or sarcopenia. You lose the strength to do the activities you once enjoyed. You remain tired and stressed which eventually deprives you of your good sleep pattern. That in turn damages the brain cells, affects your health and makes you dependent on others. But if you think that you can handle the situation in your old age, you must understand that addressing a future illness
How well can you spend your life after retirement if you think twice before even getting up from bed? Healthy muscles are the key to healthy aging, especially if you aim towards living healthy in the prime time of life. Since there are almost 600 muscles in your body, small or large, connected with the bones and responsible for your movement, their maintenance is more than just lifting weights and following a healthy diet pattern. Muscle health is about maintaining a good balance of; Regular physical activity Healthy diet plan Body weight Physical Activity: People who manage to live their entire lives staying active and alert are the ones who spend a good portion of their time in activities like jogging or yoga – keeping themselves healthy and stress-free in the longer run. This helps strengthen the muscles and in getting more muscle mass. This in turn, supports the body’s balance, mobility, bones and joints as you grow old. A Healthy Diet Plan: In addition to regular physical activity, healthy people maintain a balanced diet plan by taking food and fluids accordingly. They maintain a fine balance of meat, fruits and vegetables without compromising on the intake of different food items.
is easier early on than stressing over it once you grow old. So to avoid crying over the lost bone mass, your best bet is to start working on your muscle maintenance today and reap the benefits later.
Maintaining Healthy Muscles is All about Maintaining a Fine Balance When we are happily living in our young age - between 20 to 40 years, we believe that muscle health starts from going to the gym and ends on taking protein shakes. While this is also a good practice and helps the body in keeping the muscles healthy, this is not necessarily enough. And this becomes more evident once you enter your 50s. Page 10
A healthy diet is not only crucial for your muscle mass but also helps the overall body metabolism in working smoothly. A good diet keeps you active and fresh, both mentally and physically, and improves your overall body functions. A good metabolism is also something that supports you in taking up all the fun activities and hobbies that you have planned to do after your retirement. Maintaining Body Weight Your diet and physical activity goes parallel with your body weight. What you eat and how you consume the energy are the deciding factors of your body weight. Therefore, maintaining an optimal body weight, in relevance to your age and height, is only possible if you eat healthy and use this energy for your own betterment. Senior Life Magazine | November 2017
As a matter of fact, a sedentary lifestyle leads to obesity. And obesity is the main cause of suffering for many weight-related problems. If you have excess body weight, this will affect your bones and joints and you might end facing osteoarthritis or hypertension. Above all, you lose the lifestyle that would otherwise prove to be wondrous for your mind, body and spirit in an older age.
To Make Up For Lost Time The good news is; even in your old age, you can still do something about your muscle health! But the key to this transformation is Consistency. If you have the required consistency and motivation to do it, you must include these two tips in your lifestyle from now onwards. Eat more protein. This is the building block of your muscles. Since you are old now, your body does not have much strength to efficiently process protein. So incorporate food items such as fish, eggs, lean meat, protein shakes or beans in your regular diet while you watch out for the body’s vitamin D levels as well. Challenge your muscles, allow your body to strengthen them, and go for aerobics. While you might not end up becoming bulky, you will definitely get stronger in terms of the muscles and heart. For this, try running, walking, swimming or even 30-60 minutes gardening a few times a week. Since now you know the importance of maintaining muscle health, adjust your diet and activities and feel the change. After all, aging is natural but losing muscular strength is not! Ee

What is Empty Nest Syndrome, and How to Cope With It Your child is all grown up now and is about to leave home for college in another state probably. You take the news calmly up front but when they actually leave, you are hit with the shock. You may experience a mix line of emotions related to sadness and a feeling of loss. Here we talk about this phenomenon in detail and explain all that can be done to cope with it in the best way possible.
What is Empty Nest Syndrome? Empty nest syndrome is not considered as a clinical diagnosis. Instead it can best be considered as a phenomenon where parents experience feelings of great grief and sadness at the sudden departure of their children. Although, you might have encouraged your children to live independently, seeing them leave home can be a painful experience. You might find it difficult to not have them around in the house and to see that your companionship has come to a drastic end. You will miss being a part of their life and will want them to be back. You may also intensely worry about their safety and how they are looking after themselves while on their own. You might struggle coping and will miss them even more as the clock ticks by. If you only have a single child, the coping process would be even harder. There have been cases in the past where parents who have suffered from the empty nest syndrome have retorted towards alcoholism, depression, marital conflicts and identity crisis in severe cases. There have however been theories that suggest parents can rekindle their interests and cope in a way that does Page 12
not leave an impact on their mental or physical health.
How to Cope With the Empty Nest You have directed your efforts since a better part of the last two decades towards the well being of your children. It is now time for them to leave and pave way for themselves. You can either falter under the nostalgic feelings you have towards them, or you can move ahead and enjoy what is left of life. The latter might sound like a tough option to follow, but here we will mention ways that are bound to get you back on your feet, raring to get your life back on track and do things that make you extremely happy.
Celebrate Their Success The fact that your child is flying out to study is a success that should be celebrated. Ruing and having your head down because you don’t have him/her with you anymore will spoil the moment and hamper your celebrations. Their success is a way to relish and celebrate the many times you overcome obstacles, set an example for your kid, demonstrated the peaceful resolution of topics to them , taught how important it is to be hard working and most importantly given them unconditional love to pave their way across the difficulties in life. This was not easy, your role, your values and your impact should make you feel proud of what you have achieved and you should celebrate it by having a good time and promising to yourself that you will endure by the qualities of perseverance that you yourself taught to your kid. Senior Life Magazine | November 2017
Change your Perspective It is true that the parting of ways with your children may feel like a loss. But, a lot of how you react to this change depends upon how you perceive it. If you are able to change your perception, you will be able to look at the change in a better way. Look at the fact that your child is leaving as a new beginning. You can take the cutlery course that you had planned, but could not due to responsibilities with your child. You can go out for a walk with your friends and have regular book meets. You can enhance the beauty of your marital relationship once you have the whole house to yourself. There are innumerable opportunities, all set for you to be explored. If you haven’t grabbed a diary or a journal before, grab one now and start jotting your feelings and plans down. You will note significant differences in how well you are able to enjoy the real essence of life, instead of just ruing your faith in becoming prone to the effects of empty nest syndrome.
Get Social Being socially active is perhaps the cure to all the problems that risk seclusion once you get older. Regardless of whether you are married or not, your life must have been revolving around your children. With them gone now, you can have some ‘Us’ time with each other. Go out to a dinner and rekindle the old flames. This is also a great opportunity to go outside and make a lot of new friends. You can go to social circles with people your age and form a decent understanding with the people continued on page 14

Empty Nest Syndrome continued from page 13 there. Your social circle will ensure that you are outside the pits of anxiety and do not have to spend all day at home, thinking about the memo memories that your children had.
Have a Pet We cannot talk enough about how important a role having a pet can play in helping you cope with the empty nest syndromes. Pets are adorable and trustful companions, who can be a treat to have around your house in the absence of your children. The responsibility to feed them and cater to their needs would make you feel like a parent again and relive the wonderful moments of having someone look up to you for something as trivial as going outside. Moreover, you can take most pets out for fun filled strolls in the park or other areas in your vicinity. You can also bond with other seniors this way, as they bend down to pat your cat or dog. Form a lovable relationship with your dog so that you don’t feel lonely or secluded at all. Ee

Sure-shot Ways for Making More Friends after 50 When you are someone who has always been involved with people and groups, life after 50 can become a bit lonely for you. You adjust to the thought of staying at home after retirement and parting ways with the people who you have spent a majority of your life with. With immediate despair looming over your head, there are two ways that you can go at this stage. You can either sit lonely in your crib or you can buckle up and explore the areas around you and make new friends. The latter definitely sounds better and will be recommended by us. Now, making friends at this stage of life can be a bit complex. You don’t have many seniors to hang out with, and even if you do find some, they might not be as frank with you as they are with other older friends. It may take some extra effort to get the correct bond, but once you have adhered to what we suggest, you can be assured of a lifelong friendship. Page 20
If you are over 50 and have nothing to write in your diary, here are some tips you can implement to get back rolling:
Revisit Past Hobbies Think of some hobbies and interests you had, before life took over. Joining a club or gardening can suffice in this regard. The first step in this process is to admit that you are lonely. You won’t make any progress, if you are not open to new experiences and shy away from them. You can even pay a visit to some old friends and delve on some memories. These old friends will refer you to other friends and you might end up forming a colorful squad. The aim in revisiting past hobbies is to keep yourself busy. Sitting in front of the telly-box and walking up and down the stairs is not what you should suffice with. You don’t have any responsibilities to cater to, which is why you can get busy moving and enjoying some hobbies that were implausible back in Senior Life Magazine | November 2017
the day. A few 50+ people that I know have formed book clubs and discuss good books every once or twice a week. They bond well with each other and have a stupendous time together.
Be Confident About Making the First Move There will be times when you feel a spark while talking to someone and enjoy their company. Whenever you get such a spark never make the mistake of missing the opportunity. Make the first move and ask for their number of any other mode of contact. See, if they are part of any clubs or societies, which you can join as well. Likeminded people get along really well, so the other person will also enjoy talking and communicating with you. Your confidence should be sky high and you should not wait for the other person to make the move. Finding the spark can be difficult as your age rolls by, but if all is handled well, you can make a friend for life.
Be Regular Whether it is going on a weekly club meet or a stroll in the park during the evenings; try to be a regular. Once you are a regular, people will start accepting you even more and will converse with you on a regular basis. People, who have been fond of absenteeism all their life, will find being regular difficult, but good friends just don’t come walking by; especially at this age. You will be required to make an effort from your end, to ensure that you don’t end up spending your time on the sofa watching TV all day long.
Invite People Many of us feel intimidated at the thought of inviting people over to our home for dinner. This intimidation has resulted in the death of an age old custom of regularly inviting people over for dinner. You can revive this custom by inviting a few close friends and then trying it with people that you meet outside on a regular basis. Inviting them over would start a chain November 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
reaction of invitations, where you will get a chance to sit and talk with a few of their friends as well.
Find Out What Is Happening Locally Have a keen eye on all that is taking place in the vicinity that you live in. From book fairs to food festival, have a keen eye for events that can be interesting for your group. Once you find something interesting, you can let your group know and can plan accordingly in advance. You can find more friends in such festivals and can have a good time with the friends you have. More importantly, you will stay in touch with everybody on a regular basis. Not meeting each other for a while can hinder friendships at this stage, which is why you should take the lead and plan pertinent meet-ups for your group every once in a while.
Plan a Trip With no time constraints on your schedule and a good group on your hands, you can plan a trip to explore the beauty in your adjoining areas. The trip can either be centered on one location, or you can hover across locations to make the most out of your time. The trip will be a great bonding time for everyone in the group and you will have a good time communicating with each other as you explore beautiful and interesting places that you have never seen before. Moreover, you can also take the lead responsibility by planning everything in advance. The responsibility will keep you busy and will be a good way to pass the weak. Book a private coaster and arrange the snacks so that everyone applauds your brilliant management skills. Your age does have an impact on how you communicate with people, but with the right attitude, you can make your age nothing more than just a number. Have a good time communicating with people and make unexpected friendships. Ee Page 21
level and eventually enhance your productivity and positivity. A study held in the State University of New York found out that women who had their dogs nearby experienced lower forms of stress than women who worked with a human pal, when they were told to solve a tricky math equation.
The Healing Power of Pets Health benefits of pet ownership is on a steep rise, from diseases related to higher blood pressure to reduced anxiety and lesser risk of heart attacks. The benefits go far beyond the realm of what is perceived by the eye. It is the intricate bond that you share with your pet that matters. The bond that takes so long to develop and is formed with mutual understanding is what makes the difference. Experts believe that owning a pet ensures a sense of understanding and responsibility. The sense of responsibility generates positivity within the pet parents. The sense of positivity later goes on to reduce stress levels and generate numerous health benefits. The benefits of having pets in your daily life have been distilled after strenuous research. Research in this regard has proven the notion that pets significantly reduce your stress
This is a result of how your muscles relax and your blood pressure lowers when you get to spend time with a friendly animal. Going into the depth of the matter may suggest that owning a pet may decrease levels of a stress hormone that has the tendency to damage your body, known as cortisol. Moreover, the friendly attachment with a pet may simultaneously increase levels of dopamine, which is the feel-good chemical present in the brain. This means that your stress levels will be decreasing, while you will be feeling more positive, joyous and emotionally positive within the presence of your pet. Elder people who reach out to their pets and have a great bond with them have been found to be more emotionally positive and happier. People who love to pet dogs and have an affectionate bond with them, experience an increase in ‘immunoglobulin A’, which is an antibody that boosts the immune system. People tend to forget the importance of the feeling of touch and stroking your pet regularly can revitalize that feeling within you. Simple interactions with animals can also be effective in making you positive and more affectionate. Regularly playing with your pet can also create the desired effect as it helps increase the bond between the pet and the parent and brings both of them closer. People who establish a strong intimate bond with their pet based on love and care are bound to benefit from a health bonus. People who anthropomorphize their pets get more psychological and physical benefits. So, if you want to plan a lavish birthday party for your pet, now is the time to get the preparations rolling. Invite your human friends over as well. Pets may come across as troublesome companions when people age, but in reality they are the support you need to combat loneliness and various other diseases that come with age. The bond that is formed with your pet instills in you coping strategies that you are overtly not aware of. You are having a jolly good time, but the effect this has on your psychological and physical stage is miraculous to say the least. Here are a few ways a pet can assist you in coping with chronic illnesses:

They Love You They love you, unconditionally and quite adoringly. When they sit on your lap and look at you with those chocolate eyes, your heart is deemed to break into pieces due to the sheer force of their love. As senior citizens we can benefit from all forms of love, especially if it is coming from our beloved pet.
They Give You Company Most senior citizens are often housebound, based on the severity of their illness. Considering that the number of visitors often dwindles over time, they silently accept their faith and suffer. Well, this isn’t the case if you have a pet giving you company. The pet is bound to keep you busy and put an end to your periods of loneliness by frolicking around you at all times of the day when you are alone. Even the thought of having someone at home by your side is enough to induce positivity in most seniors.
They Make You Laugh It can either be a slight giggle at how foolish they look while chasing their tail or a serious belly laugh at their expense, when they summersault and land head over heels on their back. Their ability to make you laugh is what makes them so special. Even in desperate times, they can come by and do something comedic that can keep you laughing for the next couple of minutes.
They will give you a Sense of Accomplishment Most pets are fast learners and adhere to what you teach them. So, when you teach them a few tricks, they will learn them pretty fast. When they master the tricks, you can have a proud parent moment and adore how wonderful they are at doing what you had taught them. It is the small things, including the repertoire of tricks that pets build due to your guidance that make the difference in how positive you are.
They Get You Outside Most seniors, who are not suffering from any serious ailment that keeps them inside, tend to remain indoors because they have no good reason to go outside. This negativity can have serious impacts as seniors keep themselves limited to watching the television and not doing any positive outdoor excursions. With healthy pets around, you will have to cater to their need and take them out once in a while. From a walk to the neighborhood park, to a fun day out picnicking, you will have a darn good time with them, while you simultaneously seep in some healthy outdoor sunshine. Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay and Gum Diseases
Often subjected to neglect, both tooth decay and gum diseases are two of the most common and prevalent conditions in both adults and children alike. Although, they are widely spread, both conditions can be easily prevented as well. A bit of care for your teeth and gums is what you need to stave off the disease and the pain that comes with it. Tooth decay is the gradual erosion of your teeth enamel. Once the process of decay is in full flow, you start developing holes in your teeth, known as cavity. If these cavities are left untreated or unattended, the holes will worsen and your teeth will be left compromised. The infection can eventually spread across to the other teeth and your gums as well. The combined condition of tooth decay and gum pain can result in tooth and bone loss. This might sound terrifying, but there is a silver lining; you can prevent both gum diseases and tooth decay from happening, if you implement the right methods. Here we have compiled a list of tips and methods you can follow to ensure that you remain safe from the problem.
Brush Twice a Day This might sound easy, but it really isn’t. If you are not in the habit of brushing twice a day, then you might find it hard to take it up. Brushing has numerous benefits, and if it is done on a regular basis, it can safeguard you from the onset of Page 28
diseases like tooth decay and gum pain. Both Cavities and gingivitis start as really small concepts. If they are not controlled through the habit of brushing your teeth twice a day, you might just be paving way for the spread of the disease. Try having a brush with soft bristles, as it can gently clean all the plaque and bacteria that has accumulated over time. The perfect time for brushing your teeth is after waking up in the morning and before going to sleep in the night. This way you can successfully counter the plaque that is formed during the time in between. Be patient and take your time to reach all the areas. The benefits of brushing regularly will only be felt if you cater to all corners properly and do not leave any corner untouched. Senior Life Magazine | November 2017
Floss Your Teeth Daily
hindering the process of tooth decay.
Flossing is an extremely effective method of staying safe from the nuisance of tooth decay and gum diseases such as gingivitis. While brushing your teeth is useful in helping you clean the teeth, flossing is best for going inside the roots of every tooth to clean all the small cervices, which are the little spaces between gums and teeth. These cervices can contain bits of food or bacteria, which if neglected can seriously harm the condition of your gums and teeth. Thus, it is imperative that you cater to these cervices by flossing your teeth regularly.
Most people will find skipping sugary meals very hard, but your oral hygiene requires the abstinence to flourish well. But, there is a rather pleasing alternative to this problem; an alternative where you can indulge in the sugary delights you like and safeguard your oral health as well. An anti-bacterial mouthwash is the solution to all your worries after you have had something excessively sweet. The mouthwash will rinse your mouth and clear out all the bacteria perfectly.
Choose Your Toothbrush Wisely One mistake that most of us commit while looking for a toothbrush is buying something that is nearest to us in the aisles. We do not complement our decision with any research. Our patterns for buying toothbrushes are based more on what we see at a moment in time than what can be best for us. Most Point of Sales terminals at Supermarkets have toothbrushes stocked at the exit, considering the neglect shown while buying them. Always remember to do your research regarding the best toothbrush for you. You might be brushing your teeth twice every day, but will not be getting the desirable results if you don’t have the right brush in your hand. If you are unable to reach a decision, you should then take the advice of your dentist and should trudge accordingly. Most dentists will be more than willing to let you know their two cents on the issue.
Limit the Sugars Starchy or sugary do not react well with bacteria stuck in the cervices. The reaction that occurs in the teeth and gums, after you have eaten sugary foods, leads to tooth decay. Sugar reacts aggressively with the bacteria that are present in our saliva to form an acid that is considered extremely dangerous for the outermost layer of our teeth. The enamel is the protective layer on a tooth and plays an important role in November 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
Pay Regular Visits to the Dentist It is extremely important to pay regular visits to the dentist and to have your teeth checked twice every year. The ratio can definitely be increased, if you have any other problem. Semiannual visits to the doctor won’t do much harm, but will save you from the hassle of suffering teeth or gum problems later on. Dentists can also help catch a problem in its infancy and would treat it accordingly. continued on page 30
