Buying Fresh Food at Local Farmers Markets Can Become Addictive By Tracy D. Hyorth Nestled under a canopy of trees in one of the parking lots at UNC Asheville, the cool breeze belies that it’s late July. And the market is buzzing. “You really need to bring a basket, but I always forget it,” a shopper is overheard saying one Saturday mid-morning at the North Asheville Tailgate Market. “There is nothing like cooking and eating fresh food.” One of the oldest in the area, NATM happens every Saturday from 8 a.m. – noon from early April through late November. You’ll find not only locally grown seasonal vegetables, but proyou can round out your grocery shopping with honey, pro biotic drinks, cheeses, farm fed beef and pork, vegetarian proteins, seafood, breads, herbs and so much more from one of the 40+ vendors who sell their goods almost every week. You’ll even find handcrafted jewelry and all kinds of beautiful flower bouquets.
September 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
It’s a most definite feel good kind of place. Strolling amongst the vendors, sampling some of the newly made goodies, and listening to the old-time music by a group of smiling musicians easily takes you back to a time when shopping at outdoor farmers markets was the norm in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Buying from local farmers markets can become addictive. A guilt free addiction. One that is good for your health, the local economy, and perhaps most importantly your taste buds. There is nothing as delicious as freshly made. Western North Carolina is abundant with farmers markets. No matter where you live, you can probably find one nearby most weekends and even throughout the week. continued on page 7

Make Visiting the Vet a Priority Senior veterinarians and pet experts recommend that senior pets be taken to vets on a more regular basis. You should make it a routine to take your pet to the vet once every six months. This way, the vet will be able to come to you about any of your pet’s impending health issues before they start affecting its quality of life.
Tips to Keep Your Senior Pet Healthy
Make your choice of preferred vet and stick to them, because constantly changing them is not doing anyone any good. Vets take time to understand a pet, and diagnose what kind of health conditions might be plaguing them. They can better access the needs and the lifestyle that the pet will require at this stage of life.
We might deny it, we might not accept it, we might even resist it, but it is indeed hard to ignore that our pets usually age faster than we do. Your beloved cat or the dog that has been a part of your family since forever might just be aging faster than you currently realize. There will soon come a time when your pet will become a senior and have special needs. If you neglect that fact, you will be doing nothing but making life difficult for them.
Do remember to question your vet a lot. Keep throwing random questions at the vet regarding behavioral changes that your pet is displaying. Discuss the reasons behind these mood swings till you’re satisfied with the answers. If your cat is not able to jump down the stairs as fast as it used to, or if your dog is not able to run with the same speed, the vet needs to know. Vets require information about any behavioral changes or mood swings your animal friend is experiencing.
If you, like many others, want to keep your pet healthy and live out their senior days happy like any other family member; you should take extra care of their needs once they become seniors. A senior pet requires a lot of special attention and care, which you will only provide if you accept their seniority. We have compiled a list of tips you can follow to keep your pet healthy and fit once they grow older.
Watch their Weight This is extremely important, especially if you have a pet cat. Any irregular weight gains or change in eating patterns suggest that your kitty needs a drastic visit to the vet. Weight gain at mid age can threaten cats and other pets with chronic diseases later on. Mental illness and diabetes, within pets, can also cause rapid weight loss or gain. When pets become older they may start losing weight as well, which can be an indication of a bigger underlying problem. Weight loss is not correlated to the food your pet eats. They might be losing weight, even if their food consumption is normal. This is why, it is important that your monitor and manage the weight of your senior pets regularly. If you witness an alarming increase or decrease in their weight, you should immediately look for the services of an able vet.
Monitor Their Food Intake Owners who have multiple pets often fail to monitor the food intake of all their pets. This practice needs to be changed once you have a senior pet amongst the lot. A senior pet has diverse food requirements, so you should take special care monitoring the tray or utensil they eat in, so that you have an idea of their food intake. Senior pets Page 10

eating less than normal indicates that something is amiss.
to countless visits to the vet.
Moreover, rather than just monitoring the quantity of food they consume, you should also alter their diet. Dietary requirements are ever changing and once your pets grow old, there is special emphasis on providing them with special food that caters to their special needs. You will be able to find food for senor pets at your local pet supply or even superstore. But if you want to be extremely sure, you should go over to your vet to get an idea of what will be suitable for them at this stage of life. If your dog has been diagnosed for any diseases, you should also take that into consideration while choosing the diet.
Pimp Their Bed
Lookout for Staircases With arthritis and other conditions limiting mobility, pets start to dread the thought of climbing stairs, once they grow older. It’s on you to provide them with assistance in this regard. If you have stairs in your home, you should make sure that senior pets don’t have to trudge over them. Bring everything of their interest downstairs and limit the chances of any accidents whatsoever. All litter boxes and sleeping areas should be limited to the ground floor, so that your pet friend does not have to make the arduous climb up the stairs. Any neglect shown in this regard might cause accidents and will lead September 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
Once they get old, your pet deserves to be pampered with care and love. One such show of love is making them feel extra comfortable in their beds. Make their beds comfy and provide soft blankets and towels for the bed. Your pet should feel at ease on their bed and should have a peaceful sleep during the night. You can also us special-purpose beds and mattresses recommended by orthopedics, if your pet is suffering from arthritis. The gentle vibrations would help them doze off within a few minutes without feeling the pain of their aching bones.
Strengthen Your Bond with Them While many might be against getting too attached with a pet when it is in the twilight of its life, a strong bond with the one person they have so flawlessly loved for all of their life is what pets want during this stage. Be near them at all times and make it a habit to cuddle and embrace them occasionally. All pets need to be loved, but senior pets deserve a lot more for showing loyalty during their whole life. Remember that at this stage, your pet needs you as much as you need them. Make memories! Ee Page 11

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Seniors Chiropractic care, which is one of the most acclaimed forms of addressing spinal issues, is beneficial for everyone including seniors. There are few myths surrounding this form of spinal care or therapy, but in reality chiropractic care is not only safe but better than all other alternatives such as drug treatments and surgery.
What Makes Chiropractic Care Effective? Chiropractic care is known as an effective form of spinal care because it addresses all the abnormalities causing spinal disorders that come with aging. Chiropractors who are proficient at chiropractic care are trained to treat all subluxations and the effects they inflict on the central nervous system. Subluxations are the misalignments of the vertebrae. Anti-inflammatory medications along with pain relievers just mask the symptoms, and are associated with numerous side effects. Chiropractors have great expertise in performing spinal manipulation and other beneficial treatments. The theory behind these manipulations is that if the body and its musculoskeletal system are properly aligned, the body will be able to heal itself without any surgery or medications and pain relievers. Manipulation is extensively used in seniors and other cases where tissue injury has been caused by a disturbing event or stress such as repetitively sitting without sufficient back support. As the process of aging lingers on, seniors start reporting occurrences of aches and pains within the whole body. Now, they can easily combat the imminent threat of spinal issues by getting the help of an experienced chiropractor. We have compiled a list of 4 of the most interesting benefits that can be availed by seniors through chiropractic care:
Pain Relief The success of chiropractic care spurs from how easily it can combat pain within the body. The relief provided by chiropractic care is unparalleled and cannot be rivaled by any other alternative. It combats the aches and pains that keep springing up as the body gets older and more worn out. As a person starts aging, their musculoskeletal system does not have the same flexible alignment which it did before. Chiropractic care will greatly help fix all misalignments within the body. These misalignments when fixed can positively affect the nervous system as well. A positive change in the nervous system will signal reduced inflammation in a natural way, which relives most of the soreness. On the contrary, anti inflammatory medications are like bandages that just mask the pain and its symptoms, and do not provide any authentic and reliable cure for the condition.
A Noticeable Increase in the Body’s Balance and Coordination Almost all of the problems in the balance and coordination of senior citizens are found to be a result of injury or other changes in the cervical spine. and coordination by creating a reaction, through manipulation, similar to that of the mechanoreceptors present in the cervical spine. The stimulation restores the joints functioning and leads to massive improvements in the coordination of the patient’s body.
Increased Range of Motion Chiropractic care, managed by an experienced chiropractor, can help increase the range of motions of the spine. This increase comes as a wave of fresh air for seniors.
the back or posterior joints of the cervical spine, are usually responsible for managing the flow of information, deemed essential for balance and coordination, to the brain. These mechanoreceptors in the posterior joins are responsible for the position of the head in regards to the whole body. As the imminent process of aging speeds up, mild defects start occurring. These mild defects impair the functions of mechanoreceptors and eventually result in a loss of body awareness. Numerous studies conducted by renowned institutions, have shown that chiropractic care can restore the balance
In many cases, a chiropractic adjustment immediately results in an increase in the range of motions. The immediate results and the high productivity of the process is why most sports teams have an experienced chiropractor accompanying them.
Increased Well Being I can sleep through the night without pangs of pain! I feel as fit as a fiddle after this treatment. These are some of the responses you will get when you ask someone how they feel after a session with an experienced chiropractor. Chiropractic care is a lot more than just a treatment addressing spinal issues. Ee

How to Invest After You Retire You just enjoyed your retirement party. Had a brilliant honorary farewell from the organization and are now heading towards the unknown territory of living the retired life. Done with the parties and farewells, the newness of it all, you settle at home. Lay idle for a few days. Do some gardening. And then you begin to wonder about what exactly does the future hold. Will your money last as long as you do? Will it be there whenever you need it? Once you are retired, you no longer have the luxury of getting a regular paycheck. You have to manage your resources, manage your resources in a way that you don’t deplete them. They say money makes money that is what exactly you have got to do. How you approach retirement depends on your intentions. If you intend to be the stay-at-home grandparent, who eagerly awaits their grandchildren to come visit them once a month, you’re lacking vision. If you intend to be the person making the most out of their retired life by managing their lifelong reserves efficiently, then you are at the right place.
Retirement income funds are considered as a more specialized version of normal mutual funds. Once you enroll into a retirement income fund, your money is automatically allocated to a varied portfolio consisting of numerous bonds and stocks. The allocation is done through other mutual funds. Annuities of all kinds are considered more as insurance rather than a form of investment. We decided to include them in this list because the general purpose behind annuities is to produce as much profit as possible. And this is exactly what you want in retirement. An immediate annuity ensures your future income. While you are paying a lump sum amount, the insurance Senior Life Magazine | September 2017
company provides you with a guaranteed income for the remainder of your life or for some mutually agreed period. The guarantee you receive will be in lieu with the reputation of the company you receive it from. A quality insurance company will provide you a solid and authentic guarantee of regular payments. Immediate annuities can be distributed into two forms. You have the option to opt for a fixed immediate annuity or a variable immediate annuity. The variable immediate annuity provides a clause which states that the income you are offered will react directly to inflation. If inflation increases, so will the income offered. However, while inflation is taken into perspective, the initial monthly amount given to you is lower than what you will get from the fixed immediate annuity. Moreover, selecting the term of the annuity also lies in your court. You can choose the payout period from any of the options mentioned below: A finite payout period: For example a payout period which can be measured in time. It can either be for 10 or 20 years, or whatever seems feasible to you. Joint Life Payout: This is great for a married couple. If you have a husband or wife, who is reliant on you, you should opt for this option. Joint life payout provides monthly payments for the lifetime of the partner who lives longer. A single life payout: This is just dependent on the retired individual and their lifetime. You will receive payments for your lifetime. Immediate annuities can be a worthwhile option for many individuals. Retired people, who consider themselves as over spenders, might like being under the budgets provided by immediate annuities. Moreover, individuals who don’t have other sources of income and are used to regular paychecks, will find the annuity and its monthly payments extremely beneficial.

Buy Bonds When you make the decision of buying a bond, you are lending your money to a municipality, a corporation or the government. The borrower, who you have lent the amount to, will pay you a fixed rate on the amount for a finite period. Once the bond reaches its preset maturity date, the original amount of principal is duly given back to you. The interest you receive annually or monthly, coupled with the payback of the original sum can be a good investment option for spending your retirement money. Bonds have various quality ratings which give lenders an idea of the financial strength of the party issuing the bounds. Bonds can be distributed into short-term and long-term bonds based on the period of annual payments. Floating rate bonds, which have adjustable interest rates, and high yield bonds are a current favorite among people, despite their lower quality rating. Once you retire you can purchase bonds for the substantial income they promise you. If you want to buy them as a means of capital appreciation, you are better off opting for real estate. We hope that the options presented in the list help you make an educated decision. Life after retirement is tricky and we believe any credible recommendations can do wonders for you. You could be the person who spends their retired life traveling the world, or you could be someone struggling to pay their medical bills. Choose wisely! Ee
Exploring the Varieties of Honey in Western North Carolina Not all honey is formed the same way. We take a look at the varieties of honey in Western North Carolina and explore the nutritional facts behind this delicious natural sweetener.
What’s better than a generous topping of honey to sweeten up the biscuits you’ve just made? But there are so many different forms of honey sitting there on the shelves of your neighborhood store that it often becomes a frustrating exercise to pick out just one. To relieve yourself from the confusion, it is good to have prior knowledge of what qualities make for good honey. Boasting of the highest number of beekeepers in all of the US, Western North Carolina has a rich history of cultivating honey in a variety of forms. If having the most beekeepers was not enough,
Page 20
North Carolina is also host to various blooming plants. From the valleys to the piedmonts, each landform within the state is host to a wide array of plants different from each other in nature. And each plant has a chemical of its own, which gets concentrated within the honey to give a unique flavor. Considering that most of the beekeepers within Western North Carolina are hobbyists, the varietal honey does not usually make it into the supermarkets. Instead, it is handed over to and passed around family and friends. These varietal forms of honey are desperately sought by those within us, who
Senior Life Magazine | September 2017
have an inclination towards the sweetness we tasted and fell in love with during our childhood.
Sourwood The sourwood tree, which is also called the lily of the valley, towers above the rest with its gigantic bark and frame. The tree has a diameter of at least a foot round, which when coupled with its height of 60 feet add to its majesty. The leaves which are oblong, point towards the apex and have an extremely sour taste. The flowers resemble the shape of a bell and hang 5-6 inches down the end of all branches. Found in abundance within the valleys of Western North Carolina, Sourwood trees bloom throughout late June and the whole month of July. When all other flowers are rarely found blooming, the flowers on the sourwood tree render beauty with unparalleled grandeur. Bees hover across the blooms, sniffing to their hearts content and filling their bellies with what will soon be the most sought-after honey in the location. The honey from the sourwood tree has a light earthy brown color. Moreover, varietal honey from sourwood trees is also believed to contain a tasty butter caramel flavor. Considering that there are not many other flowers blooming in the late June and July season, sourwood honey has a unique and distinctive taste. The taste has remained the same for ages and has been consistently good. It is the same that your grandmother used to rub on those crunchy little butter biscuits for you. Those who have tasted sourwood honey before can easily differentiate the intricate flavors from other forms of honey. If you taste sourwood honey once, you know what it tastes like forever.
Tulip Poplar As the growth of flowers on sourwood trees fades, the tulip poplars compensate by reaching more than 150 feet on the piedmonts. The blooms are nicely tucked and embraced by high leaves on the side. But if you have ever looked at one before, you will testify how even after this thick cover, you can distinctively see the pale yellow tea cups waiting to be attacked by hungry bees. The taste of the honey extracted from tulip poplar is nothing less than remarkable. The dark amber color of the honey leads to the assumption that it is dark and musty in flavor. However, in reality, the flavor is very mild and light. Honey extracted purely from the bees is extremely dark in color, but the taste is light and buttery. Tulip poplar is a much-liked variety with popular demand from people who have tried the wildflower or September 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
clover honey varieties available in stores, and do not like them. Those, who do eventually taste the tulip poplar, rave about how different and refreshing it is.
Galberry As the season for tulip poplar comes to an end, thirsty bees rush towards the small evergreen bushes of galberry, also known as inkberry. Small white flowers thrust themselves out of the bush’s stems, almost as if they want the world to see them. Though they don’t offer a lot to the human eye, galberry bushes are the perfect rendition of a honey bee’s wildest dream. The bees buzz around the bloom to extract as much as they can and fill their stomachs till they are ready to burst. During the summers, the bloom of galberry flowers is thronged with bees hovering around, twitching to get a taste of the heavenly filling. The honey extracted during the galberry season has a light amber color and tastes warm and mildly fruity. People, who are accustomed to galberry honey, might not notice the exuberant aroma. But those trying it out for the first time will notice the distinct aroma and the delicious aftertaste. Galberry flowers have a decent perfume, which also lends a lot to the flavors present within the honey. Galberry is a personal favorite for many because of its elegant, rich taste and is prized for its honeycomb. Western North Carolina is changing, and so are the preferences within the beekeeper community. While other areas in the US have to plant bee desserts to provide bees with a sizable filling, Western North Carolina is blessed naturally in this regard. Galberry bushes are spread across the forest floor with an elegance of their own. From the towering sourwood trees to the surprising tulip poplar, bees have access to plenty of sources for honey. The bees eventually find it all, and bring it into their hives to ripen and prepare it for our supper tables. Currently Western North Carolina has sufficient natural supply, so there is no need as such for human intervention. Ee Page 21
Find Something for Every Age and Fitness Level at The Asheville Running Experience By Tracy D. Hyorth Greg Duff has been running for a lot of years and when he moved up to the 55-59 age group, he thought the competition would get easier. He thought wrong. The Personal Records (PR’s) he’d hit a year before were history. He’d have to start over, set new goals for a PR. But that’s okay. The owner of Glory Hound Events likes a good challenge. Especially when that challenge involves personal fitness. And putting together “The Asheville Running Experience” fit that criteria… big time. Now in its third year, The Experience is a series of five separate events taking place over three days in Asheville, Friday, Sept. 22 – 24. There’s something happening for everyone, no matter the fitness level — a half marathon, a 5K, a fun run, a chasing trail 8K and a scavenger hunt. Depending on the length of the event, participants range in age from toddlers pushed in strollers by running parents to people in their 70s. According to Duff Duff, it’s never too late (or too early) to take part. “Ask yourself some questions. What are you goals? What are your expectations? Get some good running shoes and start slow. And find some local groups to get involved with and to help keep you motivated,” Duff said recently over a cup of coffee. You can find those groups on https://www.meetup.com/. Page 22
You’ll have to create an account, but once you’ve done that, search for running groups in the Asheville area. Or get in touch with one of the local running stores like Jus’ Running, Foot Rx Running or Fleet Feet Sports Asheville, to name a few. “The running groups for older aged people are particularly social in Asheville. There is one group that meets at Carrier Park to run and then goes out to breakfast,” Duff explains. Running is a great way to stay in shape and meet new people who share a common interest.” Duff is a former competitive swimmer who migrated to running and triathlon later in life. He has completed virtually every distance from 5K to Ironman. And he’s no stranger to planning athletic events. That started when Duff was 13, living in Arizona. He was a swimmer and helped put on a parents swim meet with other young people at his school. Jump forward almost 30 years later to 2006, to Asheville. That’s when Duff first managed the Bele Chere 5K, founded his events company and continued growing it from there. All driven by his passion for a combination of loving Asheville and wanting to stay in shape. “I’m lucky to get to do something that I love doing,” Duff says through a beaming smile. Diet and Exercise Tips for Better Prostate Health
With the risk of prostate diseases rising, specifically cancer, men are becoming more and more concerned about the steps they can take and the tips they can follow to ensure good and sustainable prostate health. What can I do to maintain my prostate health? This is one of the most frequently asked questions by men looking to reduce the chances of prostate cancer. Most men go to their physicians with expectations that they will run a magic wand over them and free them from the risks of prostate diseases. But the answer mostly lies within your own hands. The choice to manage your diet and exercise schedules in a healthy way is in your own court. Here, we mention diet and exercise tips you can follow to save yourself from prostate cancer and other such diseases.
Diet Tips Currently, there are no food items which have been deemed as the perfect fix for fighting off the threat of prostate disease. This being said, dieticians recommend specific eating patterns of healthy eating. And, contrary to popular belief, healthy eating is extremely easy. Develop an inclination towards fruit and vegetables. Doctors usually recommend 4-5 helpings of healthy fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Go for fruits, which have a deep, bright color or dark leafy vegetables. Page 24
Go for whole grain bread instead of white bread. Wholegrain bread is much better than white bread for prostate health and avoiding prostate cancer. Also try eating wholegrain pasta and cereals. Nutritionists recommend you to limit your intake of red meat. The limits should be placed on all forms of red meat including beef, lamb, pork and mutton. Furthermore, refrain from eating processed meat in the form of hot dogs and bologna. You can still go for white meat options such as fish and poultry for healthier sources of protein. Avoid sodas and other soft drinks which have been sweetened with sugar. High sugar content is not recommended. Also abstain from overeating desserts with high sugar content. Consider desserts as an occasional treat. Go for fats which are healthy for your body. Foods with healthy fats consist of avocados, nuts and olive oil. Limit the intake of processed and fast food as they contain high amounts of saturated fats, which can put you at a distinctive disadvantage with regards to prostate diseases. Watch what you eat at all times. If you feel full, stop eating as consistent overeating can be harmful. Senior Life Magazine | September 2017
Cut down on the salt you eat on a daily basis. Foods which are low on salt content should be your go-to options and should be opted for. Read the food labels on everything you eat, and refrain from a high intake of foods with sodium.
9. Push Ups: The best thing about pushups is that you don’t need a specific place or equipment for it. Just get on your legs and hands and start with 5-10 pushups. Increase the number of pushups with the passage of time, once you have built more stamina.
The points mentioned above are what experts consider beneficial for you in a nutshell. Besides changing your eating patterns, you should also try to remain active throughout the day.
10. Yard Work: Gardening and all other yard work, though a hobby is an extremely good way to manage your health. Moreover, the work done will result in a brilliantly maintained garden as well.
Exercise Tips
11. Swimming: Swimming is a resistance exercise which gives the whole body a great workout.
Staying active and fit at all times is necessary for fighting off the risk of prostate diseases. Fortunately men have a wide variety of options they can opt for to stay active and fit. A few of the exercises recommended for combating prostate diseases are: 1. Walking: Walking is necessary for staying active and being fit while carrying out all your daily chores. 2. Jogging: Once you have become accustomed to walking, you can eventually go up the next step and make the transition to jogging. 3. Tennis: Tennis is not only a fun and exciting game, but can also be used as a method to stay fit and healthy. 4. Biking: Cycling on weekends can be beneficial both as a pastime and a healthy activity. 5. Rowing: Rowing requires exemplary physical capabilities, and once incorporated into your routine can help you ace your physical fitness. 6. Dancing: Dancing can be a fun social activity, with added health benefits. 7. Jumping rope: Get a jumping rope for yourself and make it a routine to skip while you watch your favorite cable show. 8. Hiking: Planning a hiking trip once or twice annually is a very good way to not only enjoy the outdoors, but also to keep your health in check. September 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
Do any of the physical activities mentioned above for 30 minutes on a daily basis, and reap the benefits of a good fitness routine on your prostate.
Benefits of Staying Active While staying active is beneficial for more than just your prostate, there are numerous statistics which testify that physical exercise is a bona fide way of preventing the threat of prostate diseases. A few of these statistics include: 1. A study published by Harvard Health Publications stated that men who exercised for a minimal time of 5 hours a day were less prone to prostatic diseases than others who didn’t. The research showed that men who worked out were almost 50% less likely to suffer from prostate diseases. The research concluded that high physical activity reduces testosterones for controlling prostate growth. 2. A study conducted by the Harvard school of public health in affiliation with the University of California followed more than 2,700 men with prostate cancer for around 18 years. All the men who participated in up to 3 hours of extensive training during a week were 61 percent less likely to die from prostate cancer. The studies mentioned above prove how physical activities can complement a thorough diet in preventing the spread of prostate diseases within the body. Ee Page 25
Renovations Completed in Time for New Season at Asheville Community Theatre By Tracy D. Hyorth
It has the smell of new. Brand new. Comfortable, bright blue seating with wider aisles. Check. The latest in L.E.D lighting equipment. Check. High-tech sound and light boards. Check. Acoustic panels to better bounce around sounds from the stage. Check. Cutting edge technology for those who wear hearing aids. Check. New carpeting and wallcoverings. Check. These are some of the updates that are part of a $1.6 million renovation to Asheville Community Theatre. The list does go on and the auditorium and backstage dressing rooms have undergone a much needed modernizing. It’s fresh. It’s new. And it’s exciting for the ACT community. They’ve been waiting since January of this year, the theatre dark while work was done. “You can just feel the difference when you walk into the Page 26
auditorium. It has this new energy,” Marketing Director Jenny Bunn says one Friday afternoon. “Everyone who has seen it has this kind of ‘oh wow … ahhh … just love it’ reaction.” The building is 45 years old and it was showing its age. The light board was so ancient, replacement parts could no longer be found. So the journey to renovation began 18 months ago. The staff asked for opinions from donors, theatre goers, volunteers, anyone they could think of who Senior Life Magazine | September 2017
could help them “get it just right.” After putting together a wish list, proposals came in from design professionals who gave ACT a “Cadillac” bid, Bunn laughs. And although they didn’t choose the one with probably every single amenity they’d like to have, they’re very happy with the results. And very thankful for a $1.5 million grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development. ($2.2 million in all was raised and the differ-ence will go towards future expansion.) “We got some of this work done just in time,” Bunn says, doing a walk and talk tour through the auditorium smelling of fresh paint. “We’d be having some leak issues right now, with all of the recent rain, if we hadn’t gotten a new roof.” Bunn talks excitedly as she steps around un un-packed boxes of lighting, vacuum cleaners, other boxes of wiring. She points to some seats that still need to be put in place before the opening night of “The Producers”. (The show began August 18 and runs through September 10.) “We might just be working right up until the curtain goes up. Of course, that’s what we do every time we open a show. This time, there’s just a lot more going on.” Bunn continues with the tour, taking a bit of a trip down memory lane. ACT has been around since 1946, producing comedies, dramas and musicals and is one of the oldest operating community theatres in the nation. She walks up on the edge of one of the new, wider and safer ramps to the stage. When this part of the stage was being added, “(we) finally got to see the original stage. We must have counted at least 20-30 layers of paint. That’s certainly not all of the shows that have September 2017 | Senior Life Magazine
been done here in six decades, but we kept looking at some of the colors and trying to guess what show each belonged to,” Bunn says. The tour moves backstage where Bunn happily points to a new washing machine dedicated to dying fabric. “That’s really Photo by Studio Misha a big deal.” She looks Photography towards new cabinets that hold years of gadgets and whatnots that actors and tech crews might need for any given show. She finally walks into the women’s dressing room and can barely contain herself when she points to all of the additional lighting set up for each actor. “It may seem like a small thing. Total volunteer hours came to 37,000 in the last exdocumented year of 2015-2016,” Bunn ex plains. Making sure everyone has a place to feel as special as the shows we put on, really makes us all feel good. Our volunteers are evev erything and they deserve the best.” While the celebration is on for the recent changes at ACT, all of the work is not yet and won’t be until another building is added on the property. That structure will house an education facility and a new black box theatre to replace the current 35 below performing space. But that’s all at least a year away. There’s the 2017-2018 sea season to be completed, more planning, more designs, more fundraising. Bunn is hope hopeful ground will be broken in September of 2018. Until then? It’s on with the shows… What else? Ee Tracy D. Hyorth has been writing about Asheville and Western North Carolina since the late ‘80s and can be reached at outnaboutwnc@gmail.com. Page 27
Natural Ways to Keep Spiders Away from your Home Contrary to popular belief, most species of spiders that come barging into your home are harmless. But still, if you don’t want to share your home or belongings with an 8 legged friend, you can opt for natural ways to keep them away. During autumn, when leaves cover the ground and the days get shorter, life seems to be going on beautifully. All this euphoria lasts until spiders make their annual migration from gardens to your home. As spiders set out in search for warmer places, you will hear screams echoing from the bathroom. Here we list some natural ways you can keep spiders away, without turning into a cold blooded murderer.
1. Use Vinegar If you don’t have vinegar lying around your home, you should get a bottle or two as soon as possible. Vinegar is one item that should be placed within the home at all times for pest control and cleaning the plumbing. Vinegar spray has been found to contain properties which can effectively work as an organic pest spray for all pests including spiders. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which has a sour taste. The acetic acid gives vinegar a smell which is really despised by spiders. Spiders tend to stay away whenever they smell vinegar in the vicinity. Spray vinegar around in your home, targeting nooks and crannies. Pour some down the drain, if you see spiders coming in from there. Give special attention to areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, where spiders are most likely to come in due to the warmth. Using vinegar for general cleaning purposes in your kitchen and bathroom kills two birds with one stone i.e. you get a cleaner home and scare the spiders away at the same time. Page 28
2. Mint Spiders despise mint as much as they despise vinegar. Renowned as a natural pest repellent, mint can come in use by restricting the access of spiders to your home. You should opt for peppermint spray as a pest control option since it is stronger than other options. Another great solution is to mix peppermint essential oil with water and to spray the mixture all over your home. The spiders are bound to stay as far away as possible. An additional bonus to this exercise is that you will have a fresh minty smell coming from your place. If this is too much, you can also experiment by crushing some mint leaves and putting them in your cupboard in small sachets. If you don’t have access to fresh mint, you can even use mint teabags and use them to serve the purpose. Moreover, you can also use mint to restrict bugs from entering your home through the main entrance. Plant mints near the entrance to stop any bugs from making their way in. This will not only feed your desire for gardening but would also help keep the bugs away.
3. Citrus Citrus is another extremely potent natural ingredient you can use to limit the migration of spiders into your home. Having fruits with high citrus content within a bowl on your kitchen counter is a good way to initiate good eating habits within your family, and also to keep the spiders away from the kitchen. Rub the peels leftover after you are done eating the citrus fruits on all windowsills and doorways. To achieve a killer combination, you can dip some leftover peels from citrus fruits in some vinegar and leave them near possible entrances overnight. You can also create a spray from the mixture to keep the bugs away for good. The pungent combination of peels from citrus fruits and vinegar is enough to scare a spider for a lifetime.
4. Clean Your House You cannot expect to stop spiders from coming in if you have heaps of mold accumulating on the walls of your home. Excuse the blatant remark, but neither vinegar, nor citrus or mint will be able to limit spiders from coming in if you are offering them safe haven inside. Senior Life Magazine | September 2017
To make sure that spiders don’t creep into your home and hide behind bits of dirt, thoroughly clean your home. Plastic storage containers should be kept across the house as they can replace cardboard boxes, which are naturally inclined to attract mold. Vacuum the house every day to remove all the webs. Be sure to reserve special attention for all nooks and crannies as you will find the most webs there.
5. Turn Off Lights While lights don’t directly attract spiders, they play an important role in attracting insects that spiders come in to feast on. Keep the exterior lighting dim and make sure to have opaque blinds and curtains installed, so that the light from within does not attract insects from outside.
6. Cedar Another product which has a scent that spiders detest is cedar. While getting a cedar tree to your home sounds impractical, you can go through numerous ways to get the right amount of cedar into your kitchen drawers and cabinets to keep the spiders away. Cedar wood can be bought in numerous shapes and sizes, and you can use them in a number of ways to scare away the spiders.
7. Tobacco This might sound weird, but spiders despise tobacco just as much as they despise vinegar and citrus. Apparently they got the message ‘smoking kills’ before we did. While the reasons behind this hate are not clear, you can use the fact to your advantage by using tobacco in different ways to keep the spiders away. You can either sprinkle bits of tobacco on the usual inlets, or you can mix the bits with water to create a solution for spraying around. Whatever method you choose, tobacco will weave its magic as fast as a spider weaves its web.
8. Garlic Often known as the vampire-repellent, garlic has properties which make it perfect for controlling pests. Not only is the scent unbearable for spiders, but you should also practice precaution while spraying. Keep the solution away from your eyes and other sensitive body parts. Spiders are unwanted guests that you would want your house to be safe from during this fall. The last thing you want is to be woken in the middle of the night by screams. Practice these natural methods to stop spiders from infesting your home! Ee
