PROPERTY NEWS Former Wollongong real estate director accused of $346,000 fraud A former Wollongong real estate agency director has been accused of misappropriating a $346,000 deposit from the sale of multiple Central Coast properties for his own private use. Christopher Charles Hunt, the 65-year-old former licensee and director of Wollongong Real Estate.Com Pty Ltd, trading as Christopher Real Estate Wollongong, is alleged to have deposited the six figure sum into a Bank of Queensland bank account in the name of his business sometime between September 2010 and February 2011, but then used the money for personal spending. Court documents lodged by NSW Fair Trading said the money was a deposit for the sale of 11 properties on the Central Coast, which totalled $3.46 million. Wollongong Real Estate.Com Pty Ltd was formally known as K Hire Pty Ltd from December 2005 to December 2007, when its name was changed to Wollongong Real Estate. Com. The company was deregistered in November 2011. Hunt is also accused of ‘‘fraudulently omitting to account for’’ $230,091 in receipts, payments and transactions for the sale of the properties to a company named CEM50 Pty Ltd. He has been charged with two counts of fraudulently converting money as a licensee under the NSW Property, Stock and Business Agents Act 2002. ABS Living Cost Index suggests we are less financially stressed Wages are climbing at their slowest pace this century, yet few Australians seem concerned. Now the Bureau of Statistics has cast light on why. If the official wage increase figure of 2.3 per cent is low, it towers above the increase in the cost of living. In the 12 months to June the cost of living for employee6 August 2015
headed households climbed just 0.9 per cent, well down on the annual increases of more than 4 per cent near the peak of the mining boom. The cost of living increase is lower than the official inflation rate of 1.5 per cent. This is mainly because the living cost index includes the cost of mortgage payments, whereas the consumer price index does not. Mortgage payments fell twice in the first half of this year, slashing the required monthly payment on a $300,000 mortgage from $1771 to an all-time low of $1693. The bureau says that in the past year mortgage interest costs facing employee-headed households slid 1.7 per cent, and the cost of other loans 0.6 per cent. In the past year the price of bread has fallen 7.6 per cent, the price of milk 0.5 per cent, the price of petrol 10.6 per cent and the price of electricity 3.8 per cent. Against this, school fees have climbed 5.5 per cent, health costs 4.3 per cent and rents 1.9 per cent. Taken together the wage and living cost figures suggest that households headed by workers are becoming less financially stressed. Households headed by age pensioners also recorded a cost of living increase of only 0.9 per cent. The pension climbed 2.1 per cent. Households headed by Newstart recipients recorded a cost of living increase of 1 per cent in a year in which the Newstart allowance climbed 1.8 per cent. Households headed by self-funded retirees recorded a cost of living increase of 1.2 per cent. Super funds returned 12.7 per cent. Employment Minister Eric Abetz used the figures to suggest that public servants didn’t need big wage increases. He said the Council of Trade Unions had told members the cost of living index was “generally better than the consumer price index”. Over the past decade Australian public service wages climbed 45 per cent, private sector wages 40 per cent and the employee cost of living index 30 per cent.
