New sculptures sparkle in our Garden

Collocation by Karen Hale and Amanda Farrell, one of the 14 sculptures in the Wollongong Botanic Garden, on show from 12 to 28 March. Fourteen sculptures from local, national and international artists will be on display from 12 to 28 March throughout the Botanic Garden as part of the Wollongong Bicentennial Acquisitive Sculpture Award 2016.

Last year Council called for expressions of interest from artists for the Sculpture Award with 14 artists chosen to exhibit their works. As part of the Award participating artists were asked to respond to the theme: Illawarra 200 – Shared Values, Shared Future. Artists were invited to approach the theme in a representational, symbolic or abstract way. Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said: “The Botanic Garden is a marvellous site for a sculpture award. “The standard of these sculptures is very high and they add a striking artistic dimension to our Botanic Garden. The Acquisitive Award is part of Council’s Public Art Program that aims to enhance our public spaces and cultural life in the city. “I encourage all community members and visitors to saunter through the Garden over the next two weeks. A walk around the Garden is a wonderful experience and these art works are a great visual addition to the natural beauty of our Garden. “Wollongong City Council is proud that we have been able to bring this Acquisitive Sculpture Award to the city.” The outdoor exhibition will be held at the Botanic Garden in Gwynneville for two weeks from 12 March. The program of events accompanying the Sculptures will include artists’ talks, sculpture tours, workshops, twilight performances and exhibitions. Visitors to the Garden will be able to explore the Sculptures from 7am. One of the artists will receive the inaugural Wollongong Bicentennial Acquisitive Sculpture Award of $30,000 with the work remaining on permanent display in the Botanic Garden. The winning artist will be announced on 16 March. In addition a People’s Choice award of $3000 will be presented. Visitors to the Garden are encouraged to vote for their preferred sculpture in the People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice winner will be announced at a special function on Wednesday 23 March. Councillor Chris Connor, Chairman of the Illawarra 200 Committee, said: “These Illawarra 200 events provide an opportunity to reflect on the original inhabitants of the city as well as the 200 years since the first Europeans settled the region. “This Sculpture Award is a way of recognising and commemorating the last 200 years. It will also be a strong presence in the Garden and hence a reminder for future generations that we are still building a strong and resilient city for all people.”

Nominations open for Youth Council Nominations are now open for young people to stand for the Shellharbour Youth Council. In December, Council considered the recommendations of the youth council working group and resolved to establish the council.

The youth council will advocate on behalf of all young people about issues impacting their lives, culture and environment at a local, national or international level. “We want to make sure that the proportion of our population that are under the age of 25, are given an active voice in the decisions of Council,” said Mayor Marianne Saliba. “Increasing the diversity of people making representation to Council ensures that we are making decisions that represent the needs of everyone,” Cr Saliba said. “It’s important that young people have the opportunity to be exposed to the bureaucratic process, to understand how to influence decisions and advocate on behalf of the community,” she said. Some of the goals of the group are to represent all young people of the local government area, help to plan, conduct and evaluate activities and services for young people and communicate with young people about all issues raised by the Council. It will comprise 13 members, being one representative from each of the eight high schools in the Shellharbour local government area, one from the Southern Youth and Family Services, one from Shellharbour Aboriginal Youth Association and three from the community. Meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm and conclude no later than 9pm at the Blackbutt Youth Centre, Cygnet Avenue, Shellharbour City Centre. There will also be two bi annual meetings with all Councillors each year. Each member must live in the Shellharbour City Council area and be aged 12-25 years. The application for the community representative closes on Friday 25 March and it is anticipated that the first meeting of the Youth Council will be conducted during Youth Week 2016 on Wednesday 13 April.

Seniors Festival comes to Wollongong Seniors Week Committee member Benetta Tambakis joins with Wollongong Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery OAM and Lauren Kayle from Live Committed for the launch of the Seniors Festival 2016. With the 2016 Seniors Festival running from 1 to 10 April, Wollongong’s over 55s can get involved in a range of activities such as bellydancing, curating an exhibition of treasured mementos and discovering a new fitness regime. With 147 different activities planned over the course of the Festival, there will be something for everyone. “Seniors Festival is all about being inspired, and having a pro-active attitude and positive state of mind. It’s important that Wollongong’s seniors are not only active and healthy, but happy and learning new things is a good way to be engaged,” Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said. “The fabulous Silver Belles, who’ll be dancing at the Lady Mayoress’ Afternoon Tea Dance on Tuesday 5 April, are incredible role models. They’re a group of seniors taking an active and engaged role in their community. “This year we’re working with Feros Care to create a talking point that celebrates positive ageing. We’ll be providing a mobile chalkboard that will be set up near the Wesley Church on the Mall for anyone to finish the sentence ‘As I Age’. This is a chance to encourage positive conversations about getting older.” The City’s official Seniors Festival program will be released this week and distributed across Wollongong City Council’s Libraries, community centres and Council’s website. Tickets for all activities will go on sale from Monday 7 March. The program put together by Council and our Seniors Festival Committee, lists a wide variety of activities organised by Council, community organisations and local businesses. It includes the Lady Mayoress’ Afternoon Tea Dance, fitness activities, workshops and multicultural lunches. The week kicks off with a Mini Expo at the Builders Club on Friday 1 April. The Expo features keynote speaker Maggie Sydenham as well as other free learning sessions.

MARKET view Looking back at last week, the Illawarra property market softened slightly in some respects but it came off a very strong previous week. The median price (rolling 30day) for a three bedroom house was $545,000 which is consistent with February prices. The same can be said for 2 bedroom unit prices that have remained at $433,000 (rolling 30day).

While the prices are holding steady, sales of both houses and units have fallen slightly but as a good indicator of buyer demand, the median days on market remains at 41 days. This is unchanged since the first week of February. These numbers may reflect a tightening in supply but this should not be seen as the beginning of the often quoted “collapse” in the real estate market. Indeed, well priced property is moving quickly and auctions are showing a very healthy clearance rate. Last week saw a clearance rate of 90% and the week before it was 85%. As mentioned in last week’s column it is important to look at the Illawarra market independently of the wider market because there are local factors at work affecting the supply and demand. The Illawarra real estate market remains very strong and in the absence of any significant changes in the market these conditions will continue.
