During the 80’s and 90’s I purchased/ renovated and sold residential properties. It would be an understatement to say I didn’t have a strong interest in real estate. My partner Susan Spence worked at Elders Jamberoo. Doug Malouf (Dougmal) approached her to take over from the retiring owners at Dougmal Kiama in 2001. We purchased the business and I assisted for six months on weekends and evenings after obtaining my certificate of registration while still working in my previous profession How long have you been in real estate? Nearly 15 years First sale? Old 1800’s house on Bong Bong Street, Kiama for asking price Most memorable sale? They all seem to be memorable. I think it was my second year in real estate. I listed a property in Kiama for $1,850,000. The property had been with another local agent for some time with no success. The owner had started looking round for a new agent to take over the listing. I managed to win the listing, found a buyer and sold it within two weeks of listing it. Most memorable recent sales have been achieving above our estimates and achieving street sales record. I have done so on three of my recent sales. All very happy sellers! What are the current trends in the market? Auction has dominated the market in many areas as the preferred method of sale. Kiama is no exception. There is a greater demand for most property here in Kiama and selling with less time on market. Auction tends to find the most satisfactory result. If property is offered at a price, guide price has been popular, eg offers above How do you see the market in the next 5 years? Hard to say but I think this cycle will remain for a long time unless there are (Government) changes how property is 20 August 2015
purchased and higher interest rates. Any change may affect the purchasing ability of the buyer. There is no indication of a slowing of demand at the moment What do you find most challenging about real estate? It is a people business and requires constant communication and feedback between owner and purchaser. It’s all about making for an informed decision What would you be doing if you weren’t in real estate? I don’t have a plan B. I love doing what I do. All the same it is a business and is highly regulated. As a business owner I must deal with all facets of running a business. The bad and good. Most people believe real estate is a glamorous vocation Mentors or people you admire?
