Join Clean Up Australia Day & help our oceans

Wollongong City Council is asking community members to roll up their sleeves for the 26th Anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March. Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM will launch the event with members of the Australia Seabird Rescue organisation on Monday 29 February at Berkeley Boat Harbour. “Once again, we will be focussing on tidying-up our waterways, roadsides, parks, reserve beaches and bushlands,” Cr Bradbery said. “Together we produce more than 300 million tonnes of plastic each year and nearly half of this is thrown away. Plastics in the ocean, in our waterways and our city is a pervasive problem that hurts or kills our wildlife and detracts from the beauty of our natural environment. “Plastic from bottles has been found in a number of ocean going seabirds after they have eaten the plastic believing it to be food. “In launching Clean Up Australia Day this year we are supported by members of the Australian Seabird Organisation which looks after sick, injured and orphaned seabirds and shorebirds. Much of this damage is caused by rubbish, particularly plastics, in the waterways or ocean. “I’m calling on all community members to get behind this great initiative and join an existing site to help remove some of the rubbish from the city.” There are 20 registration points throughout the city on Sunday 6 March where community members can join up. In addition there will be 40 schools taking part in the School Clean Up Australia Day on Friday 4 March. “Previous collections have taught us that cigarette butts and plastics are easily the most commonly found rubbish in our city,” Cr Bradbery said. “It’s this plastic that causes a lot of damage as it all ends up on beaches via the stormwater system and damages or kills our marine and bird life. “Volunteers should bring along their gloves and sturdy footwear and get ready to take part in Australia’s biggest cleaning frenzy.”

Shellharbour Boat Ramp under construction Construction works to upgrade the Shellharbour Boat Ramp are now underway. Access to the ramp will be adjusted during the 13 week works schedule to complete the $670,000 improvement project. The refurbishment of the ramp will be divided into two stages and involves the demolition and replacement of deteriorated sections of the concrete and a slight widening on the western side to realign the edge. Ramp access during stage one of the works (15 February – 23 March) will be available at all times from the eastern side of the

ramp while the demolition and reconstruction of the western side of the ramp is completed. During stage two (31 March – 22 April), access will be available to the western side of the ramp, 5pm-7am Monday to Friday, 1pm-8am Saturday and all day Sunday. The eastern side of the ramp and the installation of fenders to the sea wall will be completed in this stage. Access to the concrete wharf will be maintained at all times during the upgrade works.

West Dapto Home Deposit Assistance Program The West Dapto Home Deposit Assistance Program (WDHDAP) has been established to help low to moderate income earners get their foot in the door of the housing market in the West Dapto Urban Release Area. We hope to be able to help as many as 300 households buy their own home over the next 15 years. This Program is an initiative of Wollongong City Council established with funding received under the Australian Government’s Building Better Regional Cities Program. Council received $13.9 million in funding to help bring forward the West Dapto development and to allocate $9.2 million to assist low to moderate income earners to purchase a home in the West Dapto Urban Release Area. The Program has been approved by the Australian Government and will be delivered by Council in cooperation with IMB. The Program applies to new houses or house and land packages in the West Dapto Urban Release Area up to the value of $444,000. Under the Program, a security deposit of 20% of the home price will be placed with IMB for approved applicants. As the home loan reduces and a Program borrower’s equity in their home grows, the security deposit will be released back to Council and Council can continue to offer assistance to new applicants. Initially, we’re proposing to offer up to 123 assistance packages - 27 in the first year with remaining packages distributed approximately equally in the following two years. Conditions apply, so please read the documents on the right of this page under ‘Program Information’ carefully for full details. You’re advised to obtain your own legal and financial advice prior to obtaining financial assistance under the Program and prior to entering into any contract to purchase a property or to obtain a home loan.
