About the Americans in Paris
Making
Art History Our exciting VRFA fine art project, Americans in Paris aims to follow in the footsteps of many historical masters who had traveled to Paris for inspiration, and to introduce today’s leading fine artists in Realism and To raise capital for the first trip, Rothe curated an Impressionism to new alluring foreign subjects and themes. It began with a purpose to inspire contempo- exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in New York in the spring of 2016, where twenty invited American artists rary American artists to travel to Paris and discover sold work and were able to fund their travel. The AIP exciting new ideas for their works, and to study adgroup also presented their ideas and did live demonvanced group composition in the museums in a place strations at Rothe’s alma mater, Laguna College of where so many important artists had found inspiration Art and Design. Both venues cheered them on. and formed connections historically. Inspired by the great American painters before them The initial visit to Paris, well organized by Rothe, such as Sargent, Whistler and Cassatt, a group of was created to be a workshop as well as a journey. American realist and impressionist artists would travel to Paris to draw inspiration from the city of light, Arriving there in May 2017 the artists were not only architecture, food love, and fine art. There they attend- able to study valuable art history, paint en plein air in ed art museums, examined the masters, absorbed the Paris, but engaged in fine art discussions each evening culture, shared ideas and painted together with the goal to discuss and debate art history, current artist trends, topics and to make their plans for exciting upcoming of reaching the next level of mastery in their work. group exhibitions. The twelve AIP artists painted in Paris and at the Grande Chaumière Atelier for a week as they filled their sketchbooks and minds with ideas, some new and some inspired by the past. Echoing the ‘salons’ of the past, where artists and writers shared ideas, the AIP artsits recreated discussions such as the Impressionists or Hemingway/Fitzgerald had done gathering in Paris bistros and bars, 100 years before.
In addition to Rothes lectures on the relationship of literature to fine art and how they inspire one another, Sean Forester from the Golden Gate Atelier spoke on art and humanities and gave his notes on composition. The group was honored to have Peter Trippi head editor of Fine Art Connoisseur present a slide show lecture on art history and gave further support to the fine art project.
In spring 2018 it was time to show the result of their experiences with some new and exciting paintings. Rothe curated and organized two bi-continental exhibitions at some of the foremost galleries for Realism in America and France. These showcased the AIP artists’ original works by inspired by their stay in France, from Paris nocturnes to Louis XIV interiors, from winged figures and florals by the masters to figures in the landscape and from the literature and group discussions held in Paris. The first of these exhibitions was held at Arcadia Contemporary in Los Angeles, CA, April 2018 and the second at Galerie Prince de L’Oeil in Paris, France, May 2018. Both were met with great success and all works have sold.
In 2019 the artists traveled again to Paris, some in small groups, some on their own, and developed more sketches and new ideas based on the lessons. All began to create new works inspried by what they have learned abroad and Rothe decided it was time to share with the public. A planned workshop for 2020 that would be open to art students and patrons alike, and would feature 5 of the AIP artists teaching and lecturing, did not move forward at that time due to Covid. This workshop open to the public, created by Rothe and hosted by Workshops in France, will now take place in 2022 mid spring (Info on last page). Now in 2021 our exhibition, featured here in this catalog, is the result of Rothe proposing to the aritsts that they paint and draw inspiration from one of the most beautiful genres of art to hit Paris and Europe in the 1880-1920’s ART NOUVEAU. Inspired by Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and Louis C. Tiffany works are filled with gold, petina green, flowere, female forms and more. We welcome you to enjoy the splendors as we revive the genre of Art Nouveau.

About Art Nouveau Now in it’s sixth year, VRFA Gallery’s Americans in Paris presents another exciting exhibition conceptualized and curated by artist, writer and art dealer Vanessa Rothe. This years theme celebrates Art Nouveau, and boasts over 85 new dazzling works created just for VRFA gallery with brilliant gold, petina green, patterns, textures, figures and scenes of Paris by top international artists in the genres of realism and impressionism. Did you know the Eiffel Tower itself is considered an ART NOUVEAU masterpiece?
Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, round sinuous, organic line and touched on many disciplines such as architecture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, textiles, cermaic, posters, and illustration and fine art. Its is an international style of art, architecture, and applied art, especially the decorative arts.
Emerging in France, Belgium, Germany and Austria in 1887 this new style was called Art Nouveau or Jugendstil, meaning new art, or youthful style. A genre that became popular in revolt to the rigid ubranization and after the industrialization that had occured, the artworld as well as the literature world at the time felt it was a time to go back to nature. Nature and round edges also evokes the feminine and the female figure, often nude, with rounded lines, were encorporated into many works. Art Nouveau was prominent in western Europe and the US from about 1890 until World War I and is known by its intricate linear designs and flowing curves based on natural forms, an ornamental style of art with twisting ivy (whiplash) ends and rounded edges that flourished at this time in Europe and made its way to the United States encouragin the craftsman era.
Art Nouveau During this time, print making, reproductions and posters had become available and a new type of Illustration and graphic art arose. Flat shapes and graphic elements were often used at this time and Alphonse Mucha and his illustrations were in high demand as the popular style of advertising.
In Austria an aritst by the name of Gustav Klimt had a brand new style as well, highlighting textures, guilded gold paint and patterns twisting combined with realist rendered figures. Klimt seemed to have made a new style of his own with this inventive combination of rendered three dimentional form and flat art with a special foucs on design and pattern. With a theme of nature, florals, feminine and “rebirth” this exhibition is perfectly timed for our world at the moment as we get back to our roots in nature and come thru the pandemic. We hope you enjoy this stunning collection we have created now available here at Vanessa Rothe Fine Art gallery. Thank you for supporting our fine art project.
