nd it has been quite a battle… When I sit down with the “old school thrash metal” band, Citadel, I am told the band’s name was chosen specifically because of the meaning behind its definition. I believe rhythm & lead guitar player, Jason Carr, said it best: “We were a tight group growing up. It is a concept of unity behind the walls of our metaphoric castle.” Indeed growing up in Frankford Philadelphia, the members of the not yet formed band were already close. They attended the same school, two of them were once related by marriage, all four band members lived within one quarter mile of each other & two of the members even lived on the same street - But it was music that brought them together in the way that we know them now. Citadel was formed in 1985 by friends Jason Carr and Bob Hughes. It quickly went through a few line-up changes before it settled into the foursome that would now and forever be known as Citadel. The band immediately began playing clubs in Philly & Jersey and developed a loyal following of fans who loved late 80’s & early 90’s thrash metal. The band was strong and thriving in the club scene for seven years or as they like to say “many a drunken moon.” With local success and a loyal fan base they decided to take Citadel to the next level. They made a demo to begin shopping for a record deal… And then the “battle” began. The cohesive atmosphere that surrounded the band for the previous seven years started to fracture… Maybe it was the stress that came from three of the band members living in the same house together (girlfriends included)… Maybe it was the fact that bass player, Chris Elliott, left the band due to the increasing stress and an invitation to play in another band… For whatever reason, the damage had been done. The three remaining band members hung on a bit longer even replaced their former bass player but then it all kind of just slowly fizzled out. Over the next fifteen years the exband mates went their separate ways, going on with their lives, getting jobs, getting married & some having babies… Sometimes in touch with each other & sometimes not speaking for years. However, that stronghold that was formed many years ago in the schoolyards of Philly was living up to its name. Unbeknownst to any of them, they were all, at some point through those years, thinking about each other. Just prior to Memorial Day 2010 Chris Elliott called Jason Carr to discuss the ownership of the band’s name. The amicable atmosphere of the phone call prompted Elliott to invite Carr to attend a Memorial Day block party at his house. For some reason, maybe even fate, Bob Hughes’ drums were at Elliott’s home. It seemed only natural for Carr to invite Hughes to attend the party also. What happened next reads like a scene from a feel good movie but the truth is SO much cooler than fiction. Maybe it was the consumption of spirits at the party, maybe it was the feeling that comes when old friends reunite and maybe we will never know why - But the next thing the ex-band mates knew they had hauled all their equipment out into the street in front of the house and as they say, “were jamming together, just playing anything and everything” – And the impromptu “street concert” was gathering an audience – People were spilling out of their own parties to watch the show - And something clicked for all of them – It wasn’t planned or even thought out - “It was an organic thing” says Elliott - And in that moment they knew they wanted to be a band again – With a quick phone call by a mutual friend to their vocalist, Will Shull, it was a done deal. So here I sit, on July 1st 2011. I am at the Whiskey Tango in Philly waiting for Citadel to take the stage. The band members are older and wiser and I am wondering if what I am about to experience is the same Citadel that I myself used to “rock out” to back in their early days... So guys, how does the second time around compare to the first? Wow, great question… We are much more mature and prepared for anything that comes along in this tough biz, as opposed to when we were twenty… We are definitely hungrier now… Also, we are more focused on the prize, the prize being: jamming to hundreds of thousands of people! Your fans are so loyal. How psyched are they to have you guys playing again? Well, we won’t speak for them; we think the mosh pit and the “Hit Crew” (the name of the band’s loyal mosh pit regulars) answer that one… We have really had a great reaction from our fans and our friends and a lot of support from our families. When someone comes to a Citadel show what do you want them to experience? What do you hope they leave with? We want them to get their money’s worth for the time they are at our show… Our goal is that they have a great time, make some great memories and we are hoping they leave with some bruises cause that means they were in the pit (wicked laughter)! What is in the works for Citadel right now? How can your fans keep up on what you guys are doing and where they can see you live? The house lights go out & the stage turns an eerie shade of red - Lead vocalist, Will Shull, jumps up and down like a prize fighter before a championship fight – As the other members of Citadel are walking to the stage every hand in the pit is extended towards them – Fans wanting to slap a hand or the backs of the musicians as they walk by – Fans that have been waiting fifteen years for this… In the end, I was not to be disappointed and neither were the rabid fans that became one entity whirling in the mosh pit as the thrashing and melodic music invaded their bodies. The guys play like a well oiled metal machine and the charismatic Shull has that certain confident swagger and screaming pipes you want in a front man. Although the band writes all their own music, I have to say I think it is TOO cool that they throw in a cover of Metallica’s “The Four Horsemen.” It seems very fitting watching four lifelong friends, who have battled to get where they are, perform that song. As I watched the guys up on the stage I could not help but to think that the years have served them well. They certainly “rock” just as hard as they did back in the day and seeing them do what they do best, I can’t help but feel that the 2010 resurrection of Citadel is somehow superior to the Citadel of old. Like a fine wine or a barrel aged whiskey some things get better with time. The band Citadel is certainly proof of that.

was asked to be among many and pray for Paris, he knew there was something more he wanted to do. The very innovative and huge hearted Canci started his own benefit: “Play for Paris”. He organized a group of five different bands to come together, donate their time by playing for free, at a benefit that would donate all the proceeds to little Paris. It was such a success in March of 2011 that he vowed to have another benefit within six months. Good to his word, Rich Canci has delivered again. The next “Play for Paris” benefit will help little Paris once again but some of the money raised will also go to The National Alcohol and Substance Abuse Foundation as well as Lifestyles for the Disabled. I met up with Canci this past Saturday to get all the details so we can all support this great cause!

Rich, you are a metal vocalist with a heart of gold. I am sure you are changing a lot of mindsets with your efforts to help Paris. Why is this so important to you personally? I was looking to make people open up, in all ways, emotionally, musically etc. I feel like to an extent, if people were more open and accepting, people wouldn’t be so depressed or hiding things or on medications. Right away people refer to our music as violent or “baby murder music.” They should only know that unlike mainstream hip hop songs that talk about rims and women and drugs and murder, a lot of these bands are Christian and send nothing but positive messages with or even without mentioning God. Also, about life and its issues and saying we can overcome anything. There are the songs about partying or fighting but mostly a positive message this show will enlighten many. Comedy Central’s 1st Annual Comedy Awards
C
omedy Central pulled out all the stops on this one and everyone who ever told a joke or laughed at a joke was there. Tracy Morgan presented the first Comedy Icon award to Eddie Murphy and you could see he was thrilled to do so. Eddie influenced so many Black comics who came after him. He probably influenced a lot of white comics too but they didn’t do as good a job of following up! Tina Fey was there as a presenter and also won for Best Comedy Actress for her work in Date Night - where she dropped the f-bomb while accepting - and told the crowd how she crushed Helen Mirren in acting - with her tongue so firmly planted in her cheek, it looked like she was hiding a crab apple in there! By the way… has anyone noticed she may possibly have the best legs in comedy??? David Letterman was there and accepted the night’s highest award from Bill Murray called: The Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence. Alec Baldwin came out on stage with Chloe Moretz of Kick-Ass fame and accepted an award for Best Comedy Actor for his work in 30 Rock. I was on the red carpet shooting the arrivals (sounds so violent!) and got to see Christian Finnegan, who was hosting the red carpet, and she was very humble about having been chosen for what I thought was something very special. Comedy Central’s Aileen Budow (assisted by Eve Kenny) ran the red carpet with great skill as she always does. I got to interview Jon Stewart who I hadn’t seen in quite a while. John won for Best Late Night Comedy Series and is managed by an old friend of mine, James Dixon. I knew James when he was an agent at William Morris where he could always be found with fellow agent Mike August, who I understand is with him at Dixon Talent. James also handles Stephen Colbert and a few other names you may have heard of like: Adam Carolla, Carson Daly and Jimmy Kimmel. James was kind enough to actually snap this photo.

ichard Lewis came to New York to headline at Carolines and we made plans to meet up at The Friars Club. Richard is in a class by himself when it comes to comedy. To me, he’s a modern day Woody Allen and I mean that as a compliment to both of them. Richard’s one of those rare performers that has such a strong comedy identity - that of an angst-ridden Jew - that a comedy writer like myself, who understands that mind-set perfectly - could have a ball writing for him - except that Richard has never used a writer. Once, many years ago when he starred in the movie Drunks, I presented him with some material and before I even got home that night there was a message on my answering machine thanking me - and telling me that the material was not only “hilarious” but “brilliant” - and it was obvious that I could write a funny joke but that he couldn’t use it because he always writes his own material. The fact that Richard answered me right away is part of his character. In making plans to meet at The Friars he was meticulous at keeping in touch and planning the exact time, like the Allies planned the invasion of Normandy! I got there early to set up and Richard was right on time. We sat in the bar, where we could be undisturbed and he was very gracious with his time - since Richard prepares incessantly for every performance and tends not to meet with anyone while he’s doing so. It was only because we’re old friends that he graciously agreed to meet with me. I showed up not knowing whether I’d be able to film him but he was so accommodating. He even helped me set up the camera at the right angle and suggested a couple of shots for me that he thought would work. Richard prepares like no other comic I’ve ever seen. His work ethic is admirable and shows on stage. He sold out Carolines with all his shows. He works with such an incredibly high level of free association, that he actually interrupts himself with a new thought before he allows himself to finish the thought he was talking about. He hardly lets himself finish a sentence. None of his shows could ever be the same.

Story Pirates with Jon Stewart
J
on Stewart and his wife, Tracey co-hosted the third annual After School Special at Symphony Space on Broadway and it was a really fun, enjoyable event for the children’s writing initiative known as Story Pirates. Story Pirates takes stories written by elementary school kids and has well known actors act them out. I was prepared to be bored but it was fantastic and very entertaining, because the children’s stories were very entertaining and creative. I kidded with Jon that the reason it was called Story Pirates was because these well known performers steal the ideas from small children and then use them as a performance and that he could actually do the same thing on The Daily Show if he wasn’t doing it already! That got a big laugh from Jon. The event drew a lot of stars besides Jon and I got to speak not only to him but to John Oliver, Kristen Schaal (who looked so cute in a pony tail) and Ana Gastayer who was there with her son, Ulysses. Artistic director, Lee Overtree, is to be commended, as is Kiki Valentine the talented performance artist who helped bring attention to the event.
Men of Violence Slated for 2012

y only non-comedy project, a feature film I wrote called Men of Violence was picked up by director, John Gallagher, and is posted on IMDb Pro as being in preproduction for 2012. Men of Violence is about a successful plastic surgeon obsessed with violence, who accidentally kills the son of a powerful mob boss and has to become the “baddest” man on the planet to save his wife and kids from retribution. John Gallagher is a film director who always works with star-studded casts like Amanda Peet, Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol, John Leguizamo, Zach Braff, Heather Matarazzo and Denis Leary. He has directed award-winning films like Blue Moon, Men Lie and The Deli. He’s currently working on horror movie, DIGGER 3D, starring Heidi Kristoffer and Ryan O’Callaghan - the gangster comedy, FICKLE, starring Frank Vincent - and the short comedy, I LOVE YOU, starring Ryan O’Callaghan. I recently saw John at the Soho International Film Festival where he is on the Advisory Board, when I was con-

ducting interviews with him and actor Frank Vincent at an event John produced. Then I got a great interview with Michael Imperioli who was there presenting his own film The Hungry Ghosts with Sopranos co-stars Steve (Bobby Bacala) Schirippa, John (Artie Bucco) Ventimiglia, Vince (Johnny Sack) Curatola and Sharon (Rosemary Aprile) Angela. I was there with the beautiful and talented internet sensation Lauren Francesca. Jeffrey Gurian, Woody Allen, and Rosa Gudmundsdottir at Café Carlyle.
The Night I Made Woody Allen Laugh

oody Allen has always been my inspiration and was actually the first big star to read my very early ideas. That is a story I will tell in depth on my blog, because it’s a long one but suffice it to say that he read my material over the course of two nights and encouraged me to make films because he said my comedy was very visual. This was many, many years ago and our paths had not crossed in quite some time so when my dear friend, Rosa Gudmundsdottir, a talented singer and friend of Woody’s close friend, John Doumanian, told me he was performing at the Café Carlyle, we went up to see him. As John was about to re-introduce me to Woody, I stuck out my hand and interrupted with: “Hi Woody, I’m a very close friend of yours!” He thought about that for half a second and burst out laughing, which is not an easy thing to make happen, as you might be able to tell from the serious way he comes out in photos! It was a special moment that I wish I had on video. I do have two witnesses however and their names are Rosa Gudmundsdottir and John Doumanian.

ashes - You know you want ‘em, and you want ‘em long – Think – Curled - And Dark. What is sexier than a pair of gorgeous lashes to bat at a would-be date? Well, after months of testing, I’ll tell you how to get them. I started with the prescription lash-enhancer, Latisse, and used it for two months. Yes, it does work, even on sparse brows but beware. If you have anything other than brown eyes, it can turn your eyes darker. My hazel eyes are now slightly less green and I’m not happy about it. It can also cause some temporary irritation. No, Latisse is not an option for me. So, I set out to find a drug-free lash enhancer, one that would give me longer, stronger, darker lashes and fill in my sparse brows. First, I went the drugstore route. I tried Ardell’s Brow and Lash Enhancer and L’Oreal’s Lash Boosting Serum. Two months with each product and I have no results to report whatsoever. This one’s going to be worth some money. I visited one of my favorite websites: Dermstore.com and picked up their two most popular sellers, Rapidlash and Smartlash by IQ Derma, an amazing line. I tried Rapidlash first, for two months and thought I saw results at first but realized I wasn’t seeing much of anything by the end of month two. Then I switched to Smartlash. Hallelujah! I wish you could see my lashes! Within TWO weeks my lashes are thicker, fuller and longer & my brows are filling in. This stuff is worth the money. Check it out at Dermstore.com. Sometimes there are sales and deals, there’s always free shipping and sometimes Dermstore even throws in a free gift or magazine subscription. It is my favorite website of all time.
Let’s get to dressing up those new lashes with mascara. I’m a big believer in starting with a primer to build fullness and length. After a few unworthy drugstore attempts, the lash primer winner is Urban Decay’s Lash Primer Potion, available at Drugstore.com. It gives you the most added fullness and length I’ve ever seen. I apply two coats and follow with black mascara. Now, mascara - I’ve tried them all. Yes, Diorshow is fabulous, as is Lancôme’s Hypnose. However, being that you need to toss your mascara every two months, I refuse to spend $30 on it, so I’m a drugstore mascara girl. My favorites are L’Oreal’s original Voluminous and Maybelline’s Turbo Lash. I go for volume in mascara, since my primer provides length. If you’re going to curl your lashes, curl BEFORE mascara. Position your lash curler at the base of your lashes and gently squeeze as you move along the base, NEVER pull. Last but not least, if you want to go all out, pick up Ardell’s Medium Flare Individual Lashes and their glue. Using tweezers, dip one or two clusters into some glue on the back of your hand and apply at the outer corners of your lashes, for a flirty, cat’s-eye effect. You won’t need full-blown falsies ever again if you follow all my tricks. So, your shopping list: Smartlash Lash Enhancer from Dermstore.com, Urban Decay Lash Primer Potion from drugstore.com and either L’Oréal Voluminous or Maybelline Turbo Lash Mascara in black from any drugstore. As you know by now, I wouldn’t steer you wrong. Happy batting!

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide. One of Really Great Magazines friend’s, Aster Pheonyx, of The Aster Pheonyx Project is helping out too. Aster, what makes this cause important to you? This cause is so important to me because I have been there. I fell into the darkest place I have ever known when I was 15 and I felt like I was living in a pitch black spiral downward into hell… I was a “straight A” student, had a full-time job, a part-time job and I was very involved with my dance school... I lost who I was… Who I “was”, was who everyone expected me to be… “Me” was never good enough… I felt like I had no one to talk to because if words expressed what I was truly feeling then I would be letting everyone down... Over time, I couldn’t deal with the emptiness and worthlessness that I was containing... I grieved many deaths, let downs and disappointments… I started cutting myself, drinking and doing hard drugs... I was in so much pain; I was numb to life... I’ve thought about suicide, a lot, to be honest… I’ve had friends that committed suicide... I feel it is very important to have people be aware of the warning signs that lead to depression and suicide… I’m a completely different person then I was... If I could go back to my 19 year old self and tell her all I know now, I would… Knowledge is the first step in helping someone… When my friend came to me asking if I wanted to walk in the October 2nd fund-raiser for the Out of the Darkness Foundation, I felt I needed to do more then just walk... I needed to grab the attention of everyone I could… I am now in a better place and I wish that not a single soul on this planet is ever where I was… What other bands are performing with The Aster Pheonyx Project at the benefit? Joining The Aster Pheonyx Project will be Street Angels, who are getting back together after 20 years!!! They are a fantastic rock band full of songs from the soul. rian Mackey is a singer/songwriter from New York City who has broken the mold of a typical singer/songwriter, smashed it to bits and has created a new sound that captivates the soul. His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic and synthdriven, up-tempo indie rock with a hint of Americana. Originally from a tin roof town on the Norther Florida/Georgia border, his songs reflect life experiences and the new found freedoms of an artist in New York City.
Brian was featured on the Songs of Love for Japan compilation CD, which also included songs by Sarah Barielles, Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos. His song “Color Blue” was featured in the hit indie film, “Fake” which starred Robert Loggia and Gabriel Mann, and the feature film, “Fathoms Deep”, releasing in September of 2011. His “Honest Love” video was released in March of 2011, shot in Chicago by director Nick Cavalier. The video for his song “Sunshower” is currently in post production, slated for a release in Fall of 2011. Brian is also working on his next album, scheduled for release in late 2011.
Q Michael: What inspired the songs on your current release ‘Honest Love’ and how did the creative process of writing and recording these songs differ from earlier recordings? A Brian: These group of songs were inspired by a lot of turmoil going on in my life at the time relationship stuff and some crazy business dealings I was fighting to escape from. I headed down to Nashville to clear my mind and recording the CD was the perfect vacuum cleaner.. Q Michael: You moved from a town in Florida to New York City. How has the move changed the way you write your songs and handle being a performing musician? Does New York City inspire you? A Brian: Loss of innocence :-) lol It would be easy for me to become cynical being here and sometimes tinges of it show it’s wincing face but I slam the door on that because it taints creativity and I really would rather be a happy strumming fool than an angry one.. So I guess the only thing that’s changed is my location. Q Michael: You have played at venues / stages across the country. How do audiences react to your songs in different cities? What do you think was the best or the most exciting gig you’ve played? A Brian: Good question. I get all kinds of reactions and from the most unexpected sources.. I played a show in the Midwest recently and the song Florida got a real cozy reception from the audience but as I was singing it the promoter from the show was at the foot of the stage telling me not to say those words and he’s gonna shut me down.. So I started singing it will all the gusto and zeal of a late night televangelist and that point it became gospel to me.. I’ve been told by the best to shut up sit down don’t do this don’t say that but I’ve learned if you really believe in what your saying I mean really do with your whole heart chances are someone will listen and appreciate that you did.. Q I was very impressed by the video for the song ‘Honest Love’. Tell us about the creative process behind the video and your creative relationship with the video’s director. A Brian: Thanks! Me and Nick Cavalier the director sat in his apartment in Chicago the night before we shot it and drank wine and ate pizza we laughed a lot at everything he was doing a killer Joe Pesci impression and just really hit it off famously He’s my brother and I really do love the guy.. The next day we let the city take control and he directed it into what you see he’s got amazing skills! Look for the Sunshower video also by Nick Cavalier coming really soon.. Q Michael: I was intrigued by list of influences, Bob Dylan and Billy Joel are inspirations to many singer/songwriters, how did The Clash and The Cars inspire you? Can you draw a direct connection to one of your songs or lyrics? A Brian: Bob Dylan for his sense of not really caring about how good or bad something is.. Billy Joel for painting from real life onto vinyl.. The Clash for being reckless and honest.. The Cars for musicianship and innovation of sound for being hip without being hipster.. And I’d say my song ‘Radio’ would be an example of how I was influenced by the latter. Q Michael: What are your recording and touring plans for the rest of 2011? Where are you scheduled to perform in NYC? A Brian: The End in Brooklyn Aug. 21 2011 and Utica Music Fest Sept. 17th 2011. I will be recording with an amazing producer and good buddy Sam Ashworth in October 2011... you can catch us at The Bluebird Cafe on Oct. 9th.

VANS WARPED TOUR T
he Warped Tour is a touring music and Extreme Sports festival. The shoe manufacturer Vans, among others, has sponsored the tour every year since 1995, and it is known by most as The Vans Warped Tour (a name derived from Warp Magazine, originally published by Transworld). In 1994 Kevin Lyman created the tour while he was working on skateboarding shows that included music. He took that basic idea and expanded it beyond a phenomenon into the must attend event it has evolved into today. The venues that the tours are held on are usually parking lots or fields that are transformed by adding stages, electricity, lighting and many other structures. You can think of it as a “carnival” like atmosphere with live bands performing on many different stages, extreme BBQ being served, various forms of Extreme Sporting competitions being held, and vending booths available for musicians and sponsors to sell their merchandise and meet up with their fans. The tour went international in 1998 and in 2006 the tour started the Warped Eco Initiative. They use Biodiesel to fuel the buses and even have a solar stage that hosts 8 to 10 performers per show. This year’s tour touted over 65 bands playing on eight stages. For musicians, their fans and Extreme Sports enthusiasts it is most definitely an all around extreme – crazy – warped - good - time!

AUTOMATIC LOVELETTER Juliet Simms put together A.L.L. straight out of high school after signing a deal with Epic Records—well no, not really—actually Epic suggested she form a band and after several band members came and went, a period Simms has described as, “definitely quite a ride” then a name change from “Stars and Scars” the band as fans know it today evolved. A rock band, with acoustic/emo influences its present members are Juliet’s brother Tommy Simms (lead guitarist), Ryan Metcalf (drums) and Clint Fowler on bass. Simms just released a new album, The Kids Will Take Their Monsters On. While wholly acoustic the album has been well received by fans and critics alike.

England. Started by rhythm guitarist Ben Bruce, even their fans are confused as to which is their first album. Most would agree with its founder that the band, its members and style has changed from The Irony of Your Perfection and even an earlier 2006 EP release called Tomorrow, Hope, Goodbye to present day. Bruce has been quoted on the issue, “Asking Alexandria is not the same band that wrote The Irony of Your Perfection, in style nor members.” But there was no confusion about this bands popularity when 90,000 AA fans--no not the anonymous kind that practice twelve steps and drink lots of coffee—but Asking Alexandria fans (on the whooznxt platform ) won them an appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show. Danny Worsnop ( lead vocals & keyboard), founder Ben Bruce (rhythm guitar, synthesizer, vocals), Cameron Liddell (lead guitar), Sam Bettley (bass guitar) and James Cassells on drums are topping the charts with their new album Reckless and Relentless.

I
n 2003 Benjamin Laub, better known as Grieves, was living in an apartment in Seattle spending his time writing songs and creating beats. From 2003 until 2007 he performed in small clubs and even booked his own tours, before releasing his first LP, Irreversible. When 2008 rolled around Grieves partnered with a local producer named Budo and co-produced Together/Apart. They were going to create an online EP together but it ended up becoming Grieves second full length release, 88 Keys and Counting. Since then, the two have moved to Brooklyn and travel from city to city touring as Grieves and Budo. The duo constantly pushes each other to go outside of the boundaries of any certain genre along with their Neo-soul style of hip-hop and that makes what the fans experience all the more radical.

eally Great Magazine had the pleasure to interview Grieves and Budo on August 18th in San Diego, after a long walk to the back of the guy’s tour bus, we discovered the extremely talented guys are as cool as their lyrics and melodies.. Here’s why.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
Grieves: We definitely operate in the world of hip hop, we have the hip hop flare, with a lot of jazz, a lot of soul influences, Budo and I will play everything, and that’s where the twist kinda comes in, cuz we are not actually sampling old jazz and soul records, we are composing this ourselves, so it also has a modern twist to it, and we are using the tools that we have nowadays instead of the 60’s and 70’s. Very Melodic , Lot of harmonies, lots of singing, lot of rapping, lot of instrumental breakdowns, some trumpets, this dude plays some trumpets also and stuff (points to Budo)
WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR HAND? (raises bottle) Grieves: Bottle of whiskey, sounds like whiskey
BIGGEST STRUGGLE?
Budo: We spend a lot of time away from home, which is a blessing cuz we are out here doing what we love to do, but its challenging to be away from family and friends.

A LIFELONG LOVE AFFAIR WITH TEXTILES - By Sandra Castillo
If you were to ask yourself this question, “Who’s the lady with the outrageously bright, neon-pink coif?” and the response was something other than, “Why, it’s Zandra Rhodes, the world-famous fashion designer!” Well, now is the time to truly become acquainted with the legendary “Princess of Punk.” “A Lifelong Love Affair With Textiles” made its six-month residency at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego. The exhibition showcased the talents and handiworks of one of Britain’s most innovative designers, whose incredible career spans more than forty years. Internationally renowned for her revolutionary designs, elaborate stage costumes and ready-to-wear collections, Rhodes has been lauded by luminaries and celebrities around the globe, including the late Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Onassis, Princess Diana and Queen’s Freddie M e r c u r y. Her highly in-demand couture is still dressing the likes of Debbie Harry, Bianca Jagger, Joan Rivers and HRH Princess Michael of Kent. Rhodes was first introduced to the glamorous world of fashion by her mother, who was a fitter for the Paris House of Worth. Eventually, she would go on to attend London’s Royal College of Art, where she pursued textile design. Despite the fact that Rhodes had never studied fashion, she keenly devised a more unique, albeit cavalier approach in harnessing the shapes and movements of her garments. By allowing the textile design of the material itself to “dictate” the clothing’s final cut, the designer’s dynamic productions were unlike anything else that the masses had ever seen-or worn-for that matter.
In all of its glorious pomp-and-circumstance, “A Lifelong Love Affair With Textiles” waltzed through the gilded corridors of Rhodes’ working history. Attendees were able to view the signature-style hieroglyphics and eccentric motifs that have come to dominate the ebb-and-flow of her stately creations: luminous, golden strands coil their way through the heart of India, via a stunning rose-colored sari; the seduction of a burnt-orange sunset sizzles in the drape of an African kaftan, while whispers of centuries past surround a magnificent, gold-pleated lame dress, inspired by the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The beautiful “Hundred Bird Miao Festival Costume with Flying Skirt” boasted an astonishing array of winged creatures, tadpoles and dragons. Just to be able to wrap one’s self in this shroud of luxury ensured carte blanche for the soul to take flight. New York City shimmered like a diamond in the “Dress from Manhattan Collection”; the outfit, a 1920’s flapper-style number, was entirely handcrafted in sequins and bugle beads. As well, it provided a glittering backdrop for the Big Apple’s skyline, including the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings. The exhibit also introduced audiences to Rhodes’ simpatico trysts with the radical trends of the ‘70s. Never was this more revealing than with the designer’s assemblage of punk-inspired, drop-waist dresses; a wedding gown adorned with safety pins, and “Magic Head Jacket,” replete with Swarovski crystals. Zandra Rhodes was elected Royal Designer for the Industry by the British Royal Society of Art in 1994. She was appointed a Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in 1997. Her work has also been featured in San Diego Opera’s productions of “The Magic Flute,” “The Pearl Fishers” and most recently, “The Floating World,” a dance and video ceremony, which coincided with the San Diego Museum of Art’s presentation of Dreams and Diversions: 250 Years of Japanese Woodblock Prints.

Cold Pizza By Cherilyn Fontaine I have an affinity for Pizza; to me it is the finest food that was ever invented. It was the food of the poor and humble and it incorporates all of the major food groups into one hand-held miracle. Now true Neapolitans believe in only two types of pizza, the Marinara and the Margherita. Being of Italian ancestry I could go the traditional route like so many close-minded people with their thinking of purely black and white but I choose to go an entirely different route when it comes to my pizza and to life. I am a pizza connoisseur, I have sampled some of the absolute finest and the worst pizza I’m certain that could ever possibly be served for human consumption.

I know it is wrong to eat it because odds are I probably ate more than my fair share last night and whatever slices are left over must be applied to the “24 Hour Rule” of the house because it is most certainly not my share of the pizza, but after the initial day in the fridge and unfortunately not just the overnight, that pizza can be mine if I wait out the clock or just ask.
Many of life’s decisions can be applied to the “24 Hour Rule”, doing this will most certainly take away from reacting hastily or on impulse. Don’t get me wrong; there is nothing wrong You will use that 24 hours to be able to think with tradition. Some traditions are worth out and process all that you need to do before holding on to, but to say that there should only doing something you may regret later on down be two types or ways to make or eat pizza? Next the road, like assuming that just because it someone will tell me that eating pizza that has was leftover that you have a right to claim been sitting out at room temperature overnight ownership. A life decision, like pizza, comes in a greasy looking cardboard box, scraping the in many varieties and certainly it is far from congealed cheese off of the waxed paper and being black or white or merely Marinara or savoring that first bite while waiting for my Margherita. So if you take your time and think morning brew is wrong. Pizza is the food that no before you react you will learn that sometimes one I know throws away and if there happens to someone else that rightfully has ownership will have been leftovers they certainly will not be in want that pizza and you already having had my house for very long. If someone remembers your share, will have to wait until another pizza to take it off the stove top and it happens to night but every so often that person shares with find its way into the refrigerator, it is always you and when you finally get to savor that cold, recognized in my household because it is not leftover pizza that it was worth the wait and that wrapped up on a plate but rather just slice on there is nothing that tastes quite as good as cold slice; if there is even slices of a plural variety left pizza after it has been sitting in the fridge for a over that itself would be yet another of life’s day. So, let situations cool off like the proverbial true miracles. So there is this wonderful sight leftover pizza, look at all aspects of a situation as if I were staring at the pyramids in Egypt with and think them through and you can savor the a sense of awestruck that I am certain I would rich rewards that will come your way from not have if I ever had such an opportunity to view acting out of sheer wanton desire alone.

ose-Vanessa Joseph is a 23-year-old designer, born and raised in Cap-Haitian, Haiti. She came to America at the tender age of 15. After graduating from Martin Van Buren High School in June 2007 she modeled part-time but found her true passion was designing the clothes she wore. A friend, Jerry Fontillo aka “The Big Joker”, is the person who encouraged Rose to start her own fashion line. In her own words, “ I went to his comedy shows all the time and the way I dressed always impressed him. I was dubbed the best dressed at every event & my fashions stood out. One day he asked me where my outfits were from; when I responded that I made them myself, he told me that I have talent and should start my own fashion line. He took me to places where I could find more fabrics and materials and shortly after, by October 2010, Jerry booked a club (ESAVOY, in Brooklyn) and I did my first fashion show”, which her friend, comic Jerry Fontillo, hosted as well. What Designer(s) inspire you the most? I have a beautiful two year old baby girl named Olivia, who is my inspiration on a personal level and as far as designers “Coco” Chanel inspires me the most -- her story is so inspirational. What are your favorite fabrics, textures & colors to work with? My favorite color to work with is black – also, silver and gold. To me, the color black symbolizes power, strength and courage. I also like purple and red. I like to work with leather. I like black fabric with patterns like spider webs, flowers (roses), polka dots & I love see-through fabrics. Tell us your future goals. I hope that one day, the most famous celebrities in Hollywood -- on red carpet events and at award ceremonies, will wear my designs. I would love to have my own boutique in the heart of New York City, where fashion rules and also throughout the world. I want the name Dark Angel to be a sensation like no other among all fashion lovers. I believe that all women are beautiful. All sizes, all races, colors and ethnicities. Known to her ever-growing friends as “J.J.”, Janice Spampani of Single Sensations & friends tells the story of her group’s success quite candidly. “Single Sensations & friends was simply born out of necessity. I needed to create a social life after being married 18 yrs and then divorcing. I was busy raising my children and was out of the “loop” as to what was out there and where to go to meet new friends. After chatting with some online friends, I thought how silly it was, that we all spoke, laughed, cried and shared our lives...yet never met”. Janice decided to host a party and gather her online friends so they could meet face to face. When over 150 people showed up “J.J.” was stunned by the great turnout. That was over five years ago and the rest as she puts it, “is history!” To date Single Sensations & friends has over a 1000 members throughout the Tri-State area looking to meet, mix, mingle and dance in the areas hottest nightspots. This 30 and up crowd enjoy a wide variety of events to choose from which are guaranteed to be a blast. Partners in Production currently host the area’s most successful 30’s and over dance parties every Saturday night at the gorgeous Eve Ultra Lounge, located on Staten Island called ,“Sophisticated Saturdays,” where their guests enjoy live shows, the best DJ’s all in this beautiful state of the art NYC style Night Club (complete with Tiki bar & outdoor lounge).
