I PLAN TO USE THIS INFORMATION TO SHAPE MY FUTURE CONSIDERATION OF PEDESTRIAN ACCESS INTO SITE, ESPECIALLY FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE RIVER. EASE OF ACCESS INTO THE CITY FROM THE SITE WOULD ENCOURAGE MORE CYCLISTS TO USE THE PATHS AND EASE CONJESTION.

I USED A PHOTOGRAPH I TOOK OF A SIGNPOST ON SITE AS A STARTING POINT TO ANALYSE THE MOST IMPORTANT DESTINATIONS IN RELATION TO ORDSALL. ABOVE ARE THE MOST POPULAR AREAS WITHIN A 30 MINUTE WALK CATCHMENT AREA. EVEN THOUGH AREAS SUCH AS CORNBROOK STATION WERE CLOSE BY, THEY TOOK A SIMILAR TIME ON FOOT TO REACH AS DESTINATIONS SITUATED FURTHER AWAY, SUCH AS THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY. THIS HAS HIGHLIGHTED HOW THE LACK OF FOOTBRIDGES ACROSS THE RIVER HAS LEAD TO UNECESSARILY LONG COMMUTES.

1:1250 AXONOMETRIC

DRAWN BY:

REBECCA HEARD

SCALE:

1:1250

I STARTED BY CREATING A SKETCHUP MODEL TO SIMPLY LAYOUT MY PERIMETER BLOCKS AND GIVE AN IDEA OF HOW IT WILL WORK IN 3D. FROM THESE MODELS I COULD THEN CREATE VISUALS AND AXONOMETRIC VIEWS OF THE SITE. BELOW IS MY SITE LAYOUT AT 1:1250 AS A LOOSE FRAMEWORK TO START MY MORE DETAILED DESIGN WORK AT 1:500. I DECIDED TO DEVELOP THE NORTHERN END OF THE SITE FOR MY 1:500 DESIGN AS I FELT IT WAS AN AREA THAT ADRESSED THE RELATIONSHIP TO THE RIVER AND ORDSALL LANE EQUALLY, WITH OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE INTERESTING PUBLIC SPACES BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS.

1

I FURTHER DEVELOPED THE SITE BY REMOVING THE SKATE PARK AND INSTEAD CREATING A PROGRAMME FREE TRANSITIONAL SPACE CONTAINING PLANTED ELEMENTS AND BENCHES WHICH COULD BE USED AS A SKATE PARK. I ALSO REDUCED THE SIZE OF THE GLASS HOUSE IN KEEPING WITH THE SCALE OF THE REST OF THE BUILIDNGS ON SITE. RAMPS AND STEPS WERE ADDED TO THE CENTRAL WALKWAY WITHIN THE RETAIL/ STUDIO AREA TO CREATE A CHANGE IN LEVEL FROM THE CREATIVE QUARTER TO THE WELLNESS QUARTER, AND TO ELEVATE PEDESTRIANS FROM THE EXOTIC GARDENS THAT WILL BE SPANNING FROM THE GLASS HOUSE.

4

MORE LIVE/WORK BUILDINGS ADDED TO INCREASE DENSITY

1:500

ORIGINAL SKATE PARK AREA WITH RAMPS- TOO PRESCRIBED AND LIMITS USE

THE AREA I WILL DEVELOP INTO 1:500 SCALE

2

1:1250

FROM MY INITIAL 1:1250 SITE LAYOUT MODEL, I WENT ON TO ADD IN THE TOPOGRAPHY DETAIL AND BEGAN TO IMPLEMENT MY 1:500 DESIGN DETAILS AT THE NORTHERN END OF THE SITE. I REMOVED ONE PERIMETER BLOCK AND DECIDED TO REDUCE THE SCALE OF THE BUILT ELEMENTS IN ORDER TO CREATE NARROWER AND MORE INTIMATE AREAS BETWEEN BUILDINGS. I DID THIS TO ECHO THE AESTHETICS OF AREAS SUCH AS THE NORTHERN QUARTER IN MANCHESTER AND TO REINSTATE BUILDINGS SIMILAR TO THE FACTORIES AND MILLS THAT EXISTED IN ORDSALL WITHIN THE 1800’S.

NOT ENOUGH RESIDENTIAL DENSITY- MORE BUILDINGS NEEDED

3

MARKET PLACE TOO DISCONNECTED FROM RETAIL AREA I CREATED A GLASS HOUSE STRUCTURE FROM ONE OF THE PERIMETER BLOCKS TO CONTAIN THE WINTER GARDEN AND SWIMMING POOL, GIVING A STARK CONTRAST IN MATERIALS FROM THE TRADITIONAL RED BRICK OF THE CREATIVE QUARTER BUILDINGS IN ORDER TO CREATE A FOCAL POINT ON THE SITE. I ALSO ADDED A MARKET SQUARE AND SKATE PARK AREA, ALONG WITH RIVERSIDE TERRACES AND RETAIL/ LIVE WORK STUDIO SPACES.

I DESIGNED A BUILDING TO GO ON MY SITE AS I DECIDED TO DISMANTLE THE PERIMETER BLOCK, AS IT WAS AT TOO LARGE A SCALE TO FIT IN WITH THE URBAN GRAIN I WANTED TO CREATE FOR THE SITE. THIS MEANT THE LOSS OF PRIVATE SPACE WITHIN THE PERIMETER BLOCK,SO I DECIDED THAT THE PRIVATE OUTDOOR SPACE WILL BE MOVED INSTEAD TO THE ROOFTOPS OF THE BUILDING .

I WANTED TO CREATE A MULTI PURPOSE BUILDING THAT CAN MEET THE DENSITY REQUIRED FOR RESIDENTIAL PURPOSES, BUT CAN ALSO BE USED FOR STUDIO WORK, WORKSHOPS, AND RETAIL SPACE. EACH BLOCK CONTAINS FOUR 3 STOREY APARTMENTS. DATE :

EGERTON MILL PAVING DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

In order to contrast with the modern glass and concrete used on site, I want to highlight Egerton Mill, an important historical indistrial structure, within the materiality of the site

The footprint of the cotton mill which stood in Ordsall in 1900 will be outlined with corten steel pavers set into in situ concrete

This is a bench precedent from a lido in Italy I would like to replicate with some of the corten steel pavers. They will look as if they have been ripped from the ground to create a curl of metal you can sit on.

SKETCHUP BENCH DESIGN

I DESIGNED A GEOMETRIC WOOD AND CEMENT BENCH ON SKETCHUP TO ENSURE THE STREET FURNITURE WOULD BE IN KEEPING WITH THE REST OF THE DESIGN OF THE SITE. I WANTED THE DESIGN TO BE A LOOSER INTERPRETATION OF A BENCH- SOMETHING PEOPLE CAN LIE ON, SIT ON AND CHILDREN CAN CLIMB ON. I WANTED IT TO LOOK AS THOUGH TWO TRIANGULAR BLOCKS OF MATERIAL WERE PROPPED UP TOGETHER, WITH SOME AREAS AT COMFORTABLE SITTING HEIGHT AND OTHERS ON A SLOPING GRADIENT FOR PEOPLE TO SUNBATHE ON. I CHOSE CEMENT FOR A HARDER INDUSTRIAL LOOK AND WOOD TO ADD SOME TEXTURE AND TO SOFTEN THE DESIGN WHILE ADDING COLOUR.

NUMBER 1 AND 2 WOULD BE USED SIMILARLY TO CREATE INSET STRIP LIGHTING ON THE TERRACES. NUMBER 3 WOULD BE USED AS SIMPLE SPOTLIGHTS INSET INTO THE CONCRETE OF THE CENTRAL PATH THAT LEADS THROUGH THE EXOTIC GARDEN TO THE GLASS HOUSE. AN UNDERSTATED LIGHT WILL BE NEEDED TO GUIDE PEOPLE AND ALSO TO LIGHT THE VEGETATION FROM BELOW. NUMBER 4 WOULD BE USED AS BOLLARD STYLE CORTEN STEEL LIGHTING TO REMAIN IN KEEPING WITH THE THEME OF THE SITE, AND ALSO TO GUIDE PEOPLE AT NIGHT SO THEY DON’T FALL INTO THE RIVER.

BEN LOOKED AT THE CONDITION OF BUILDINGS AND SURFACES IN ORDER TO GAUGE THE LANGUAGE AND MATERIALITY OF THE SITE. THERE WAS A GENERAL LACK OF CARE & MAINTENANCE OF THE PAVING, AND THE GRAFFITI CULTURE IN THE AREA CREATED INTERESTING SURFACE PATTERNS THAT COULD BE ENCOURAGED OR REPLICATED IN FUTURE DESIGN WORK FOR THE SITE

AS A GROUP WE PERFORMED A SURVEY BUT TOOK CHARGE OF DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF INFORMATION GATHERING. STELLA LOOKED AT LAND USE AND FUNCTION, HIGHLIGHTING THE MIXED USE OF THE SITE INCLUDING RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, WASTELAND AREAS AND AREAS OF PUBLIC OPEN SPACE. THIS KNOWLEDGE WILL BE TRANSLATED INTO FUTURE DESIGNS FOR THE SITE IN ORDER TO REFLECT THE NEEDS OF THE LOCAL PEOPLE. I LOOKED INTO THE PAST AND ONGOING PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA AND FOUND THE MAJORITY TO BE PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT DEVELOPMENTS, WHICH HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE LACK OF SOCIAL COHESION AND FRACTURED AESTHETICS IN THE AREA. SIAN STUDIED THE FEATURES AND FURNISHINGS ON SITE, PAYING ATTENTION TO THE INTERESTING ORIGINAL FEATURES AT THE WATERSIDE WHEN THE AREA WAS A DOCKLAND, AND TO THE USE OF OBELISKS AND UNIQUE STREET LAMPS TO CREATE FOCAL POINTS.

ARIEL VIEW OF THE FLOODED FIELD PARCELS IN THE NETHERLANDS IN ORDER TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF REINSTATING THE 5TH DOCK AREA ON THE ORDSALL RIVER BANK, I LOOKED AT WAYS OF RECREATING THE SHAPE BY FLOODING INLAND. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN BY JILL FAHRENBASCHERFOUNDER OF THE INHABITAT LANDSCAPE BLOG. THE INTENTIONALLY RAISED LEVELS OF THE FIELD PARCELS ENABLE THEM TO CREATE A PATCHWORK ACROSS THE LANDSCAPE IN TIMES OF FLOODING. THE ROUNDED CORNERS OF THE LAND PARCELS COULD BE USED TO REPLICATE THE SHAPE OF THE 5TH DOCK, WHILST CREATING A MOAT EDGE BY FLOODING THE RIVER INLAND

CHICAGO RIVER WALK- ROSS BARNEY ARCHITECTS IN 2012, SEVERAL DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICES WERE TASKED WITH REDESIGNING CHICAGO’S RIVER SIDE OVER A SIX BLOCK AREA IN ORDER TO CONNECT PEDESTRIANS TO THE RIVERSIDE. STEPS DOUBLING UP AS SEATING WERE USED TO CREATE A STAGE FOR THE RIVER WHERE PEOPLE COULD RENT BOATS AND ENJOY THE WATER. I WOULD LIKE TO CREATE AN OPEN AND FREELY PROGRAMMED AREA OF SPACE BY THE RIVER IN ORDSALL TO CREATE A DESTINATION AND ALLOW PEOPLE TO ENJOY THE RIVER AS A PLACE OF RECREATION.

CASSIOPEIA- WARSCHAUER STRASSE, BERLIN WARSCHAUER STRASSE IN BERLIN IS AN AREA WITH A RICH TAPESTRY OF SUBCULTURES, STREET FOOD, A BUZZING NIGHTLIFE AND AN AESTHETIC SHAPED ENTIRELY BY THE LOCAL PEOPLE. GRAFFITI IS ENCOURAGED, GIVING THE AREA AN UNIQUE VISUAL APPEAL, AND PEOPLE USE THE PREVIOUSLY ABANDONED BUILDINGS TO SKATE, SELL LOCALLY MADE GOODS, DRINK AND EAT. THIS FREE DEVELOPMENT OF AN AREA IS SOMETHING I’D LIKE TO REPLICATE WITHIN MY DESIGN.

BOMBAY SAPPHIRE DISTILLERY- HAMPSHIRE I EXPLORED THE POSSIBILITY OF BORROWING SPACE FROM OUTDOORS BY CREATING A GLASS HOUSE CONTAINING EXOTIC PLANTS WHICH WILL SPILL OUT INTO THE REST OF THE SITE CREATING A CONTINUITY THROUGH VEGETATION FROM THE OUTDOORS IN.

NOT ENOUGH SPACE GIVEN TO CREATE NEW AREAS OF PUBLIC SPACE

NOT ENOUGH SPACE BETWEEN BUILDINGS TO CREATE INTERESTING NODES/INTERSECTIONS

RETAINING THE FOUNDRY BUILDINGS LIMITS THE PLACEMENT OF THE PERIMETER BLOCKS

THE BLOCKS PLACED THIS WAY THE BLOCKS PLACED CREATES A TALL CORRIDOR THIS WAY CREATE AN INTERNAL DOWN ORDSALL LANE SPACE WHICH COULD BE LEADING TO A TRANSFORMED INTO A FRACTURING OF THE RIVERSIDE DESTINATION ADJACENT NEIGHBORHOODS

FIRST ATTEMPT AT A HAND DRAWN AXONOMETRIC FROM THE MODEL AND BLOCK PLACEMENT. THIS WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AS THE PLACEMENT OF THE BLOCKS DID NOT ADDRESS ORDSALL LANE AND NOT ENOUGH CONSIDERATION WAS GIVEN TO THE SPACES IN BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS. THE AMENDED FINAL 1:1250 AXONOMETRIC IS IN THE MAIN PORTFOLIO. DATE :

EXPLORING HOW TO DESIGN THE INTERNAL RETAIL AREA PATHWAY AND GARDEN. I ORIGINALLY OPTED FOR AN IRREGULAR GEOMETRIC STYLE PATH, BUT HAVE SINCE SIMPLIFIED TO A STRAIGHT WIDE RAISED PATH IN ORDER TO LET THE VEGETATION TAKE CENTRE STAGE AND REDUCE FUSSY DETAIL.

3

SKETCH TO START TO INFORM MY 1:500 DESIGN, I BEGAN TO THINK ABOUT HOW MANY BUILDINGS TO PLACE IN ORDER TO REACH THE DENSITY NEEDED FOR RESIDENTS AND ALSO IN ORDER TO CREATE INTERESTING SPACES BETWEEN BUILDINGS.

TRYING OUT A DIFFERENT BUILDING LAYOUT IN A HORSE SHOE SHAPE TO CREATE AN INTERNAL SPACE. THIS WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AS IT ISOLATED THE MARKET AREA FROM THE INTERNAL SHARED GREEN SPACE IN THE RETAILA AREA.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITY OF PLACING THE RETAIL UNITS IN A HORSE SHOE SHAPE, BUT THIS TIME TO INCLUDE THE MARKET AREA/CREATIVE QUARTER. THIS WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AS THE MORE IRREGULAR AND CLOSELY SPACED CHARACTER OF THE CREATIVE QUARTER WAS LOST. THE EXTENSION OF THE GLASS HOUSE BUILDING AS A CANOPY OVER THE RETAIL AREA WAS NOT FEASIBLE AS THE SCALE WAS TOO LARGE.

4

UNSUCCESSFUL SKETCH SHOWING THE LARGE CANOPIES WHICH EXTEND FROM THE GLASS HOUSE AND JOIN THE BUILDINGS FOR THE RETAIL UNITS. THE BROWN AREA WAS THE MARKET SPACE BUT I FEEL IT DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE REST OF THE SITE.

INITIAL BRAINSTORM SHOWING IDEAS FOR THE TRANSITIONAL SPACE THAT WILL REPLACE THE SKATE PARK. I WANTED TO CREATE A PLANTED UP SEATING AREA WITH HARD GEOMETRIC LANDSCAPING THAT COULD BE USED BY SKATEBOARDERS BUT WITH LESS PROGRAMME THAN A SKATE PARK.

ROUGH SECTIONS TO HELP VISUALISE THE CHANGES IN LEVEL FROM THE RETAIL UNITS TO THE RAISED WALKWAY IN THE CENTRE. THE FINAL DESIGN NOW HAS THE RETAIL UNITS ON GROUND LEVEL AND NOT RAISED IN ANY WAY.

INITIAL SKETCHES SHOWING THE DESIGN OF THE TRANSITIONAL WATER FEATURE AREA TO THE SOUTH OF THE GLASS HOUSE. I WANTED TO CREATE A SUNKEN POOL THAT BLENDS AT THE SAME LEVEL AS THE SURROUNDING CONCRETE WITH STEPPING STONES.
