Handcrafted or Handmade? If you’re into any aspect of art or crafting I would guess you’ve had this discussion before. So what do the experts say? American Heritage Dictionary: Handmade; made or prepared by hand rather than by machine. Handcrafted; to fashion or make by hand. Merriam Webster: Handmade; made by hand or by a hand process. Handcrafted; to fashion by handicraft. Webster: Handmade; made by hand or a hand process. Handcrafted; a work produced by hand labor. Do you notice a difference? Does it matter? Let’s explore them both together. Starting off we motor to St. Armand’s Circle and meet with Roland Moser and Kristin DeFrancisco at McCarver & Moser. There we explore Patek Phillippe timepieces as functional works of art. Exquisite timepieces they are. As exceptional creations they outlive passing fashions; exquisite and elegant. Departing the Circle we put Wood Street Studio in our sights where a stopover with master woodworker Dale Rieke is in order. Half wood shop, half studio we spend time taking in fascinating examples of woodworking. Dale’s work spans architectural, furniture and art. Each piece is unique and intricate in its own way; visually stimulating. Last we jet off to Parma, Italy to meet with Luca Mamiani. Luca, an Italian fashion designer, is the founder of Personal Identity. His firm creates personal graphic identities and derives bespoke fashion items from the logo or crest. Each item is as unique as the individual’s personal identity. Truly one of a kind and never replicated. Handcrafted or Handmade? It’s up to you.

Keeping Time With McCarver & Moser By Ed Bertha | Photography by Chad Spencer
Heading towards St. Armand’s Circle one cannot help but notice the two-story granite and glass structure that McCarver & Moser Jewelers calls home. Entering the store one’s senses are heightened by the reflections off the gleaming, shimmering works of art on display. Striking up a congenial conversation with founder Roland Moser and long time associate Kristin DeFrancisco we soon begin discussing Patek Phillippe timepieces as functional works of art. Since 1839 without interruption, Patek Philippe has perpetuated the tradition of Genevan watch making. As the last family-owned independent watch manufacturer in Geneva, they enjoy total creative freedom to entirely design, produce and assemble what experts agree to be the finest timepieces in the world.

Bonnie Allen: Exceptional Client Care By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa | Photography by Peter Acker
She established herself in the hospitality industry as an astute businesswoman with solid leadership skills, and Bonnie Allen has utilized these strengths as a knowledgeable and affable real estate professional. Her experience in tourism and commercial investments provides her with a unique perspective, and she applies this in her work with residential buyers and sellers. As a member of the team at Kelly Gettel & Co., Bonnie offers her clients an exceptional level of representation and care. An East Coast native, Bonnie transitioned into real estate after cultivating an accomplished career with Marriott Hotels. Her financial background was well-suited to the move; her early endeavors involved the acquisition of commercial and investment properties. After relocating to South Florida, she became actively involved in community and professional organizations including local politics and charities. Bonnie was also elected president of the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Lodging and Hospitality Association, leading a membership that exceeded 300 individuals. Her responsibilities were significant: Bonnie served on local boards as a member of the association, establishing a comprehensive network of collegial connections in the process. “I had to keep a lot of people happy,” she recalls of the position. “One of my constant challenges was to identify creative and unique solutions to issues facing our diverse membership.” In 2012 Bonnie and her husband Jim, a retired Marine Corps officer, relocated to Sarasota in a move that took over a year to complete. “We came with a specific list of criteria and an established budget,” she explains. “It took a lot of patience and perseverance to find the home that was right for us.” That journey allowed Bonnie to embark upon an in-depth exploration of the regional housing market. She became well-versed in new construction as well as resale homes, condominiums and waterfront properties throughout the region in her lengthy and detailed search. The process was a fruitful one; not only did Bonnie and her husband find their ideal home, but she also gained an intimate knowledge of the local real estate market, which allowed her to successfully transition her residential real estate business. Bonnie’s open communication style and professionalism have earned her the trust and respect of clients and colleagues alike. In fact, it was what brought her to Kelly Gettel & Co. Joining Gettel & Co., says Bonnie, has been a wonderful move. “Kelly is established not only in our industry, but in our community,” she explains. “She’s incredibly knowledgeable and has a great capacity for marketing and advertising. Her vision is guided by

a unique perspective that always places an emphasis on achieving successful transactions for her clientele.” The diverse challenges of real estate today appeal to Bonnie, who enjoys the opportunity to “solve the puzzle” that is each distinct transaction. “I like to put the right person with the right product, help my clients put each piece in place in order to accomplish their goals.” The business of real estate, an increasingly complex industry, is one that allows Bonnie to utilize her diverse skillset. She is technologically astute, patient and thorough, working closely with each client to determine their long- and short-term objectives and then to identify the necessary steps to reach successful outcomes. Her financial background allows Bonnie to add significant value to the process of purchasing new homes, as she excels in settlement statements. “This is critical in new construction, where costs aren’t static,” she explains. Bonnie, who grew up racing sailboats in Annapolis, Maryland, continues to enjoy the water as a resident and an agent. Her experience affords her a solid understanding of the elements involved in waterfront home transactions, and she enjoys the process of marketing the lifestyles that accompany this niche market. It’s a great time to be in real estate, says Bonnie, who is optimistic about the movement she’s seeing in the marketplace. “I’m excited about the recovery that we’re experiencing,” she notes. “There are terrific opportunities out there for buyers and sellers, and I’m looking forward to assisting my clients in achieving success and realizing their goals.”

Locally Handcrafted Dale Rieke Wood Street Studio
By Kerrie Lehnert | Photography by Jenny Acheson
Handcrafted is a very common expression that is rarely actualized in today’s fast-paced world. Frequently ignored in our economical and competitive marketplace, many times we take it for granted. Most often, people want what they want, when they want it; instant gratification. On top of it all, the internet has opened a bidding platform where one can price-shop just about anything. In this column we step back, explore handcrafted and the importance it plays in our local economy. Turning off Sarasota’s Central Avenue, I park on the tree-lined street and enter the double doors of Wood Street Studio. Wood Street Studio, the collaboration of master woodworker Dale Rieke and professional photographer Jenny Acheson, is a converted warehouse space reminding one of a New York City loft, housing a custom woodworking shop and photography studio. A self-taught woodworker, Dale’s inspiration with woodworking came at an early age when he worked on wooden sailboats in
San Diego. Moving back home to Sarasota he joined a local cabinet shop. Then, sensing a need to define his own identity, he branched off in 1987 as a self-employed “artist”. Since that time, he has passionately helped designers, clients, architects and builders achieve their dreams. Dale’s custom creations span furniture, art, windows, doors, mouldings, trim work and, quite unexpectedly, fashionable clothing. All of his creations are made by hand, to order. Over 25 years of designing and constructing unique pieces, he has produced works/commissions from countless different periods. However, the Wood Street “Collection” is inspired by the simplicity of midcentury modern design. Sitting with Dale, I immediately admire his commitment to support Sarasota’s businesses. He primarily purchases from locally owned establishments, such as Sarasota Hardware, where he receives personalized service. “It’s important to me to buy from small businesses where the money goes back into our local economy,” he shares. Environmentally conscious philosophies also play into Dale’s business philosophy. His materials are no exception. Dale does not use Chinese plywood or particle board. He sources his plywood from American made facilities that obtain their raw product from sustainable forests. Dale takes it a step further and studies the glues, varnishes and paints. “I’m concerned with what I put into my client’s home.” Dale continues, “Beyond that I don’t want to want to inhale toxic gasses while I’m working on their pieces, it’s poison.” As a kitchen designer I am very aware of the effects of hazardous building materials which we recently experienced with Chinese drywall. Embracing these two philosophies puts pressure on Dale’s margins in a competitive marketplace where most others don’t have the same moral convictions. A local business owner myself, in the home building industry, I applaud Dale’s commitment to our community and the environment. Taking direction from the client, Dale starts with a blank piece of paper and the handcrafted process begins. Design soon manifests itself on draftsman’s Vellum paper and is shared with the client. Materials and finishes can be as basic as Oak or Maple or as outlandish as exotic Macassar Ebony (that is actually an engineered veneer from a quick growth forest). “There are ways to use sustainable products and obtain the desired result without sacrificing a 200 year old tree,” he states with conviction.

Entering the woodworking shop I see numerous examples of work in progress. Clamps, drills and old world hand tools surround the table saws and other manually operated machinery. In another room finishes are hand applied to creations reaching the end of the handcrafted process: works of art. Certainly something one could not price shop for on the internet or find in any big box chain store. Dale closes with, “My aim is to be the bespoke woodworking business in Sarasota.” Handcrafted? Indeed.

Solution to Economic Setbacks Suffered by Architects and Interior Designers in Current Downturn— Reinvent yourself to “Become Building Doctors” By William Henry PhD Design and Construction Industry is inherently Cyclical The construction industry economy has always been typified by cyclical ‘ups and downs’. However this latest economic downturn has not been succeeded by a robust rebound. A more rounded business education in addition to a strictly technical one can serve as a platform for re-invention In order to withstand these tumultuous times I stumbled on a new business approach to smooth the surges and plunges of our industry. This approach required both the firm and I to re-invent ourselves. This approach derived from my educational back ground which was atypical for an architect. During my early years I worked for John Portman of Hyatt Regency fame who›s firm›s slogan is «we change skylines». They accomplished this by acting as both real estate developers and architects. Since the approach had created unimaginable opportunities I wanted to tackle both design and real estate simultaneously. To do this I needed a different skill set then I had attained as a registered architect. Therefore I decided to attend The Wharton School of Business. I used this platform to study such non-design oriented subjects such as entrepreneurship, microeconomics, operations research, contract law and other business oriented subjects. In short I began working on an analytical approach to design which dovetailed with a pragmatic business approach.
existing real estate. We then applied many of the same analytical techniques I had learned at Wharton. We studied under performing properties and the reasons that they often couldn’t attract quality credit worthy tenants. Deficiencies could be both real and/or perceived. These are the result of deferred maintenance, building code violations, as well as a tired appearance. In short while there may be little or no demand for new ground up building construction-- there is a very real and CONSTANT DEMAND for addressing challenges associated with existing structures. The services to address these building challenges may derive mostly from an analytical mind set, such as the one I attained studying business related topics. This is especially true if and when litigation enters the picture. Then little discretion is left. A sense of urgency arises, especially when a court hearing date is imminent. The Building Doctor displaces the Master Builder We used the operational approach learned at business school to become ‘Building Doctors’ who address existing problems identified and related to existing structures.
A refocus on existing buildings and real estate emerge
In response to these new market dynamics, we at RGA have devised the following services to address these very real on-going, non–discretionary demands. Diagnose the building problem----Prescribe a building cure via design solutions---Operate by executing building construction---and attempt to-Recover funds via grants or claims against parties responsible for the deficiencies. In short since I had eventually attained the degree of PhD I became a sort of a ‘Building Doctor’.
Later in my career, in lieu of a focus on ‘ground up real estate’, we’refocused and streamlined our services to address the challenges associated with
After I assumed this role I found that income became more consistent. While gross income levels haven’t yet approached the volume we had with new ground up design
24 | REAL Magazine | www.the-real-magazine.com
commissions they became steadier. The only limitation to greater income is the amount of staff availability—given that quality remains high. Revenue is now tied more to billable hours typically at a higher rate than designers can charge. For instance forensic expert witnesses may be able to bill at rates twice what designers can justify to clients, especially during depositions or trials. Further fees are not ‹bid out› and capped. Invoices resemble those tendered by attorneys which are open ended. As with both attorneys and physicians unforeseen issues may arise which must be addressed during a procedure or trial. There is often little discretion in undertaking measures to rapidly respond to these challenges AS THEY ARISE. The Building Doctor Approach is Counter Cyclical. When the demand for new construction goes down the demand for Building Doctor services go up. In short, as owners in a recessionary period defer building maintenance, restoration needs increase. With outdated edifices the need for appealing building façade ‘facelifts’ also increase to remain competitive in attracting new tenants. And unfortunately as building deficiencies become more apparent due to deferred maintenance, litigation is often instigated in order to recover offsets to real or perceived damages. If you go to www.rga-design.com (Reliable Group LLC Architects website) or www. buildingdoctorfl.com (Building Doctor) you will see the results of this changed mind set. The offerings address 21st century realities.

David Rooks Rooks Advertising: Strategy. Success. Since its launch in 2007, Rooks Advertising has accomplished the unthinkable: emerging intact and flourishing during an economic firestorm. Launching an advertising agency at the precipice of an economic firestorm should have spelled certain disaster but Rooks Advertising has accomplished the unthinkable: not only emerging intact but flourishing. A cornerstone of the company’s success, says founder David Rooks, is its comprehensive approach to business. “You must adapt and overcome. We offer services beyond traditional marketing and advertising,” he explains. “At Rooks Advertising we pride ourselves on achieving results for our clients.” That is not to say that
the agency didn’t face its share of challenges but Rooks says that his faith and family motivated him to continue to push forward in the face of adversity. “You have to have a larger vision, a greater purpose,” says Rooks, “that’s what keeps you going in tough times.” Maintaining a pace with the startling speed of technology is no easy feat; the industry can be unpredictable and its path largely undefined. Charting a strategic course for each company’s unique needs has been a winning methodology
for Rooks Advertising, which employs a wholistic approach to its work. In addition to its diverse array of advertising and marketing competencies, the company also offers real-time feedback and statistical tracking on its efforts. Utilizing a myriad of diagnostic tools the agency consistently monitors and analyzes the results that the efforts deliver, with a single goal in mind, maximum efficiency of marketing dollars. “Information is key,” says Rooks, “Plan, Execute, Monitor, Adapt! That is the best way to create a success cycle.”
David with Freedom Boat Club’s CEO, John Giglio, panning a site for Freedom’s next TV commercial.
A charismatic entrepreneur, David Rooks discovered early in life the power of creating your own brand. As a young man launching a sales career he realized that he was no longer relegated to the introverted persona that had limited him during his youth. “A brand,” he explains, “is not a logo, or a tagline, it is who you decide to be in this world, whether in business or in your personal life. We all have that choice to build our brand.” That simple distinction completely changed the direction of Rooks’ life. He made the conscious decision to build his own personal brand. His early understanding of people and business earned him the nickname, Doogie, after the TV series child prodigy Doogie Howser M.D. His drive and attitude had him managing his first automotive dealership at the age of 21 and set the tone for his professional future.
Rooks relocated to the Gulf Coast and in 1997 and became the operating partner at the Gettel Automotive Group in 1999 where he continued to explore creative options to increase sales. His marketing acumen was on point; within three years sales increased by over 50%. His dynamic oncamera personality combined with a variety of creative campaigns and memorable tagline of “Gettel’s Got It!” helped make Gettel Automotive a household name. As the face of the company he quickly became known as “The Gettel Guy” and seven years later is still recognized. Despite his success, Rooks knew he hadn’t found his niche. “I wanted to build my own business,” he reveals. Fast forward to 2007, when he launched Rooks Advertising as a small business operating from a
28 | REAL Magazine | www.the-real-magazine.com
home office. He was undaunted by challenges, returning to the foundation established by his beloved father. “He instilled so many things in me,” reflects David. “Most importantly, my dad taught me that if it can be done, I can do it.” That simple affirmation has driven him beyond obstacles and expectations, allowing him to expand into an award winning, fully integrated advertising and web agency. “Rooks Advertising operates around a core philosophy,” asserts Rooks. “Our primary purpose is to assist our clients explode their profitability by increasing their lead flow.” This, he adds, is achieved through the efforts of a talented and skilled group of professionals with exceptional industry knowledge. Balancing his creative vision is
Rooks’ business expertise. He notes, “We’re not just putting together nicelooking ads for our clients, we strategize to accomplish measurable business growth.” A/C Warehouse owner Duane Burns appreciates Rooks’ focus on maximizing his exposure within an established budget. “David and his team have consistently worked with me to ensure that I’m getting the most ‘bang for my buck,’” Burns asserts. “Not only are they able to adhere to my budget, but they are constantly working to improve the effectiveness and appeal of my advertising.” He adds, “It’s working. This year will be one of my best years in a long time, and I attribute much of that to the detail and diligence of the team at Rooks Advertising.” Rooks Advertising tailors multimedia campaigns to each client’s unique audience. A visit to RooksAds.com shows the depth of their marketing expertise. With proficiencies in graphic design, electronic media, web development, search engine optimization, social media and more.
The office is always humming; coffee and messages, reviewing creative, inspirational brainstorming with some of the Rooks’ team members and timing a script for a voice over.
Left: A/C Warehouse owner Duane Burns approving another, soon to be, successful campaign. Right: David, deep in thought looking forward.
Rooks Ads is capable of delivering a fully integrated marketing solution. The process is complex, incorporating brand association, client retention and relationshipdriven marketing. “We want to identify methods that work and ones that aren’t as effective,” explains Rooks. “One of our primary questions is, does the message match the media? There are so many venues for advertising and promotion, and we examine the ones that maximize results.” John Giglio of Freedom Boat Club discovered the merits of a comprehensive advertising and marketing approach when he chose Rooks Advertising. “We realized that we didn’t have a consistent, consolidated brand running throughout our franchises,” he says. “Rooks Advertising worked with
us not only to create congruency in our image, but to form a platform of support for our franchise owners across the country. Their efforts in relationship management have helped increase member satisfaction and therefore retention. None of this would be in place without Rooks Advertising.” Rooks is expanding his in-house services to offer marketing webinars and seminars, to help small businesses grow and to develop their own opportunities through strategic tactics. When all is said and done though, Rooks Advertising knows that it must continually improve its brand and consistently create more value than anyone else in the industry. Rooks Advertising offers branding; print campaigns; video, audio

and animation production; an array of web-based services including software engineering, web design, hosting and mobile applications; tracking; analytics and experiential-based market research. The team’s high-energy approach to business comes at no additional charge.

Why Image Matters By Rebecca Z. Smith
Welcome to REAL style, a fashion focused section of REAL Magazine where we explore the world of style and fashion. What is REAL style? It is the triumph of individual style. It represents the unique you. It’s about presenting all the best of your personality and lifestyle. It shows the world who you are through highly individualized clothing, jewelry, cosmetic and where-you-live choices. Whether you are a man or woman who loves fashion or just needing style or image advice, my goal is to provide information, stories and photos relating to fashion, style and image to assist in the discovery of your REAL style.
you are. How you think of yourself and what you want others to think of you is reflected by the way you act and dress. Of all the signals you send out to others, the strongest indicator of who you are, who you think you are, and who you want to be is through clothing. This becomes your image. There is a direct correlation between how you dress and how you feel about yourself. When you look good and are appropriately dressed your confidence soars. When you feel good about yourself, it shows in your attitude, your energy level, and your quality of life.
Image matters, it speaks volumes. Why does image matter? First impressions are made in an instant. Whether positive or negative, they are strong and long lasting. You get one chance to make a first impression, so it is important to make it a great impression. From the moment you walk into a room people will quickly form opinions about your character and abilities based solely on the image you project. For example, your grooming, your wardrobe and your poise lead people to judge you as: diligent or lazy, confident or insecure, successful or worth knowing or not.
To discover your REAL style you must first understand your image. What do the clothes in your closet say about you? How would you like to open your closet and have everything in it match your fashion personality, your lifestyle, and your body type? Taking a long, critical look at what you have in your closet is the first step to understanding your image. Take everything out of your closet and try it on; check for fit, suitability, design, and color.
Fashions fade, REAL style is eternal and primarily a matter of instinct. The difference between REAL style and fashion is quality. Fashion is what you adopt when you don’t know who

Answers from Behind the Chair By Sheila Venancia
During my 14 years “behind the chair” as a hair stylist and Master Colorist I have answered many questions from my clients. I would like to share some of the more common ones. Perhaps sharing this may answer questions you have about hair care. I want to let my hair grow. If I trim my hair every month will it make my hair grow faster? No. If you want your hair to grow longer, only trim it every four months. Hair grows at a rate of almost a half inch per month. If you trim it every month you are cutting away the length that just grew. My hair is gray and I color it. Every month I feel that I need to touch up my roots. Is my hair growing that fast or is my hair color fading? Both. Yes, your hair grows, but sometimes the quality of the hair coloring product used is not that good, causing it to fade quickly. I would suggest that you try a different product the next time. There are many good product lines available.
I have highlights in my hair. Can I touch up the roots every month? It is not advisable. This can result in over processing, which may damage your hair. Luckily, the fashionable trend today is to have highlights at the ends. Every time I brush my hair it seems that I lose a lot of hair. Is this normal or should I be concerned? It is normal to lose about 100 strands of hair a day. More than that may be a result of poor diet, a hormone imbalance, or stress. If you are experiencing more than normal hair loss you should consult a doctor. “Don’t forget, your hair is very important.” Until next month.
I color my hair regularly. It always turns different shades of color at the ends. Is there something I can do about this? Yes, this problem happens when the hair gets over processed. The solution is a color correction performed by an experienced hair colorist that uses a high pigmentation and low peroxide product. I love my hair just after having it colored, but in a couple days much of the vibrant shine is lost. What can I do to protect my hair color? Do not wash your hair every day. Use a shampoo that is sulfate free. Before blow drying or flat ironing your hair apply a good quality heat protection product. I am a very active person. I spend a lot of time at the pool, the beach and doing sports. This gives me a lot of exposure to the sun and other harmful elements. What should I do to help protect my hair? It is very important to create a barrier around the hair to protect it from chlorine and salt. Using a sunscreen that is specifically designed for the hair will help greatly to maintain color and condition. Be sure to use a product that is water proof and contains both UVA and UVB. I use a dry shampoo. Is it bad for my hair? Dry shampoo’s are not particularly good for your hair, but their occasional use is an acceptable alternative to help keep from washing your hair every day. There are times when using a dry shampoo can be both practical and helpful, especially when you travel and need to have your hair looking fresh and clean.

Florida’s Island Neighbor – Life in the Bahamas By Patricia Tan
Just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, the Bahamas is our closest neighbor, and one that offers relaxed island living – a short boat ride and an easy escape from the hustle and bustle of Miami, and a quick flight from Orlando’s busy city life.
all”. Treasure Cay in the Abacos offers pristine, quiet white sand beaches, while the pink sand beaches of Harbour Island beckon many celebrities to spend their time relaxing during the day and enjoying the island’s many fine dining venues in the evening.
When Christopher Columbus first visited the Bahamas in 1492, he found Indians occupying islands surrounded by pink sands and crystal clear waters. Columbus was followed by a group of Puritans who landed in the Bahamas in 1648, and by Loyalists fleeing America after the War of Independence, many of whom brought their African slaves to the islands. Each of these groups made their mark, and the Bahamas today is a rich tapestry of African and European cultures spread across the archipelago’s more than 700 islands.
Real estate choices are as varied as the islands themselves. When making a decision to buy a vacation home or investment property in the Bahamas, the purchaser should consider these factors”
Named from the Spanish baja mar, meaning ‘shallow sea’, these low lying islands bask in clear, turquoise waters, and visitors are amazed at the variety of distractions they provide, and the unique characteristics each island has developed over time. Nassau, on New Providence Island is a well known cruise port, and the center of government and commerce for this island nation. The adjacent island, connected to New Providence by two bridges, is Paradise Island. This is a tourist playground, housing the world famous Atlantis resort, known by many as Las Vegas by-the-sea. Bimini is the closest island to the Florida coast and is a popular get away and game fishing haven for South Florida boaters. At the other end of the spectrum you will find many small, quiet, unspoiled islands to truly “get away from it
Location. A primary consideration. Is this an investment where commercial returns from a building or residence in one of the larger towns would be attractive, or is this more of a “lifestyle” purchase of beach front, hilltop or waterfront property? Infrastructure. Some islands and areas are more developed than others. Access to electricity, water and telephone services should not be taken for granted! Transportation. It is important to understand the availability of flights and ferries, and how easily a property may be accessed. Neighborhood. Overseas investors tend to favor gated communities, but in some of the smaller islands they may be wise to explore alternatives. Income Potential. If rental income is the target, think about how the property will be marketed to renters. Who is the target market? Golfers, sport fishing enthusiasts, beach lovers, gamblers, business people – there is demand from all of these categories.
This island style home with its own essence of Victorian charm sits on a tropical oasis of one third of an acre. Prime beachfront property, atop the pink sand beaches and clear blue waters of Harbour Island. The main house offers 4 bedroom and 3 bathrooms, and is complemented by a smaller cottage with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The perfect getaway for an extended family or those seeking privacy and tranquility, with separate housing for staff. The home has a good rental history, making it an excellent candidate to combine personal enjoyment with investment income. Offered at $4,500,000

Pines of Sarasota: Preserving the Region’s Richest Cultural Heritage
By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa
Since its establishment in 1948, Pines of Sarasota has become a haven for individuals seeking quality elder care for themselves or their loved ones. The organization is one driven by compassion and concern, and seeks to consistently raise the bar on its services while providing outreach and education to those in need. Pines of Sarasota offers a comprehensive variety of living arrangements, from assisted living for more independent adults, to supervised care for individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. The community celebrates life with a full calendar of activities and events, and with a range of programs and services that include a state-licensed, on-site preschool and child care facility. The diversity facilitates a ripe environment, improves staff and personnel retention, and encourages residents to enjoy fruitful and meaningful lives. Visitors and residents who stroll through the spacious campus at Pines of Sarasota notice immediately that this isn’t a staid “nursing home.” Home to nearly 300 residents, Pines of Sarasota is bustling
with life. Residents and staff members tend to a vibrant butterfly garden; balloon volleyball and yoga classes encourage physical fitness at every level, and strains of classical and big band music contribute to a lively atmosphere. “One of our ongoing objectives is to provide our residents with opportunities to be engaged and involved in our community,” notes Pines President and CEO John Overton. “Beyond exceptional physical quality of care, we are also facilitating purposeful lives.” Understanding the unique needs of individuals living with dementia or Alzheimer’s is an ongoing challenge, and Pines of Sarasota is committed to the cause. The Pines Education Institute is a regional training center that provides cutting-edge education, training and internship for medical professionals and personnel as well as caregivers. The Institute’s mission is to share knowledge with those in need; its lecture and training DVDs have become invaluable resources for individuals around the world. Also on site is an outpatient torganization adheres to its founding philosophy that stories,
48 | REAL Magazine | www.the-real-magazine.com
not numbers, are its greatest measure of success. The ongoing care of residents is so important that Pines promises to provide for its residents even if they have exhausted their financial resources. Fulfilling this lofty commitment requires significant support; The Pines of Sarasota Foundation has become an invaluable lifeline to this effort. The son of a resident, who was underwriting the cost of his mother’s care in assisted living, lost his job. He was frantic with worry as to what would happen to his mother since he could no longer afford to pay. His relief was palatable when Pines reassured him that his mother would have a home for life with or without financial resources. At Pines, rich or poor the care is excellent. Foundation President, Estelle Crawford, notes that the Foundation was created to support the programmatic, capital and endowment needs of Pines. “The combination of an ever growing elderly populations coupled with ever decreasing government reimbursement begs the question….what happens to the growing
number of seniors who need assistance but cannot afford ever increasing healthcare costs?” she shares. Just as Sarasota is ground zero for pursuing innovations in elder living, Pines is a pioneer in delivering multiple levels of high quality senior care for seniors who need assistance-even when they cannot afford it. Community support via the Foundation is an integral component in the long term success of Pines. “It’s important to us as a community to contribute to the well-being of our community members,” Crawford adds. The Foundation helps offset the cost of providing upwards of 1,000 meals a day, housekeeping and laundry, and nonmedical modalities including massage therapy and off-campus excursions. Also critical to the longevity of Pines of Sarasota – and the safety and well-being of its residents and employees- is routine maintenance throughout the ample campus. In 2011, The Pines of Sarasota Foundation raised and granted over $1 million to Pines of Sarasota, and the group looks forward to continuing to secure monies and resources for the organization. It is inevitable; time eventually lays its claims on every one of us. At Pines of Sarasota, each day is an opportunity to celebrate life, to embrace the unique gifts and histories of every resident. With the generosity and support of community members and the dedicated efforts of The Pines of Sarasota Foundation, organizations like Pines of Sarasota will continue to preserve and cherish the threads that have helped weave a local tapestry, one whose complex legacy of beauty will endure for generations to come.

The Gulf Coast Venture Forum By Sara Hand | Photo by Lori Sax
We already know that Southwest Florida (SWFL) is a great place to retire. Yet more than just a place to retire, golf and fish; SWFL has also become a place where entrepreneurs looking for quality lifestyle are choosing to build their businesses and choosing to relocate. With many of these companies at an early stage of development and often pre-revenue, they may not yet be headliners for news. However, in an economic climate that becomes more and more entrepreneur friendly, it won’t be long before they do become known. Into this entrepreneurial landscape, welcome the Gulf Coast Venture Forum (GCVF). An angel investor network with chapters in Sarasota and Naples, the GCVF supports the entrepreneurial and business communities by organizing angel investors. SWFL is home to a significant number of individuals with the means to be considered accredited investors according to the SEC, and is a part time residence to even more potential investors. The GCVF exists to bridge the gap between the entrepreneur and the potential investor.
