What Is In Store For March?
With great feedback for February’s column let’s explore March’s events: March 8th - International (Working) Women's Day: The roots of this celebration go back to the late 1800's to early 1900s. It grew from women's socialist movements and early women's trade union groups. The focus is upon women workers, and advancing women's rights in the workforce, politics and society. The first International Women's Day was held March 19, 1911. International Women's Day is sponsored worldwide by the United Nations. March 15th - Ides of March: The The Ides of March is the first day of the Roman New Year and marks the first day of spring in the Roman calendar. On this day in history, Julius Caesar was warned by soothsayers to "beware of the Ides of March". As he was stabbed by Marcus Brutus on the Ides of March in 44 BC evidently he did not heed the warning strongly enough March 16th - Freedom of Information Day: March 16th is the birth date of James Madison, the 4th president of the United States who is recognized as the Father of the Constitution and the chief author of the Bill of Rights. Freedom of information and individual rights were very important to him. Freedom of Information Day celebrates and recognizes a valuable component in American rights. The Freedom of Information Act was passed into law in 1966 and opened up a wealth of information to American citizens. March 17th - Erin Go Bragh - Saint Patrick's Day: Saint Patrick's Day is truly a day of celebrating Irish history, traditions, ancestry, and customs. It honors the Patron Saint of Ireland, missionary Saint Patrick, who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isles (Ireland) in the 400’s AD. The saying goes everyone is a little Irish on Saint Patrick’s Day. March 20th (Always on Vernal Equinox) - International Earth Day: International Earth Day was initiated to make us aware of our responsibility to care for the planet. International Earth Day was founded by John McConnell, of Davis City, Iowa. In September, 1969, he proposed establishing Earth Day to the San Francisco, California, Board of Supervisors. After approval, he gained support from many others, including then U.N. General Secretary, U Thant.

March 30th - I am in Control Day: On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was wounded in an assassination attempt. In the White House, then Secretary of State Alexander Haig said "I am in control here". Political uproar eventually led to his resignation. On that infamous day, I am in Control Day was born. Haig's statement was all but forgotten over time but this special day continued on, and evolved. People came to think about this day in a different context. It is now a day to get your life in control, a call to action. "I am in Control Day" is your chance to get things in order and under control
Till next month.

per p esr p s pee c c tt i viev s es Pride Of Home Ownership By Ricky Perrone
For more than 32 years my family’s passion has been building high end custom homes in the Sarasota area. I’ve grown up learning what makes a home special, the aspects and features in a home that lead to pride of ownership and when the time comes, a quicker and higher resale value next to comparables. I’d like to share some of my insights with you regarding design, architectural details and construction techniques. The objective is to build a special home, a home that will stand out, pass the test of time and provide pride of ownership. Of the utmost importance is design. A home with a true
architectural foundation will have a timeless appeal to it. A well designed home will feel as relevant in thirty years as it does today, but only if it stays true to its roots. Part of creating a successful home is to study and understand the history of the style and the various areas from where it draws its influences. Look at examples of homes that have been around for a long time and understand what makes them attractive to you. Subtle details won’t jump out at you but instead quietly add to the character of a home, look for them, you’ll often be surprised by their simplicity and cost effectiveness. It’s an exercise that will leave you very excited to build. Of equal importance is to avoid “cutesy” overbearing details which can diminish a homes appeal faster than true to style details can add to it. The builder is a huge part of the equation as well. In our own instance we work closely with the architect and the client throughout the entire process. We act on our client’s behalf treating the home as if it were our own, offering suggestions
to create the best home possible. The depth of character attained through the right construction techniques, as well as materials selection, is of as much importance as the design phase itself. Sitting down with our clients we determine where additional focus has the biggest impact on the quality of the home. The right builder not only plays into the longevity of the home but also the overall appeal, character and ultimately pride of ownership as well. The ideas I’ve discussed here all play into pride of ownership. You want a home that distinguishes itself from every other home. The goal is when you pull up in the driveway it is not only the curb appeal that makes you grin, but the fact that that same feeling stays with you as you walk through your home, enjoying the subtle details reminding you of the special home you own. You have a home that is uniquely you, a home that feels as though it could have been here for a century and will still be relevant attractive and functional in another century.

Nutter Custom Construction: Inspired By You. Created By Us.
W
hen Sarasota native T.J. Nutter launched his custom home company, he built upon an established foundation of excellence. His father and grandfather preceded him in the construction industry, though T.J. acknowledges that his early aspirations didn’t include following in their footsteps. “I pursued an interest in finance,” he explains. But after playing football at Tennessee Tech and graduating from the University of South
Florida, T.J. quickly discovered that he wasn’t suited for the traditional corporate environment. While interning at a financial firm, he recalls, “I’d always eat my lunch at a construction site so that I could watch the progress of the project.” It didn’t take him long to realize where his true passions lie; T.J. left the financial sector and became a superintendent for a national builder.
H
is strong work ethic distinguished T.J. early in his career. He gained management and leadership experience as a director of construction, then as the Chief Operating Officer of a large homebuilding operation in Sarasota. The opportunities provided T.J. with the ability to build a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in the custom construction industry. Armed with this knowledge and propelled by an entrepreneurial spirit he began to envision his own custom residential construction firm, framed around his belief in creating a company that would cater to his clients’ unique wants and needs.
“I always knew that starting a construction company during a challenged market is a risky –but strategicmove,” states T.J. “If you can survive during tough times, then you’ll thrive once conditions improve.” It was a calculated risk; he carefully planned his move and, when prospects began to emerge in 2011, T.J. launched Nutter Custom Construction. The firm’s slogan speaks volumes to his approach. “’Inspired by you, created by us,’ means that we listen to what our clients want,” he explains. “Their lifestyles and designs guide our work. We take their dreams and visions and turn them into beautiful and functional homes.”
Nutter Custom Construction’s projects are backed by T.J.’s vast industry experience and knowledge, along with a 10-year third-party structural warranty. A licensed home inspector, certified building contractor and licensed real estate agent, T.J. is well-versed not only in the elements of construction, but in how to maximize property values and achieve longterm returns. He is an accredited LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional and a certifying agent for Florida’s Green Building Coalition. Active in his professional community, T.J. has served on the advisory boards of regional vocational institutions, was the 2011 Chairman of the Sarasota County General Contractor License Board, and has been involved with the City of Sarasota Historical Preservation Board. He is a past president and lifetime director of the Manatee/Sarasota Homebuilders’ Association.
Nutter Custom Construction 5539 Marquesas Circle Sarasota, FL 34233 (941) 924.1868 tj@nuttercustomconstruction.com www.nuttercustomconstruction.com
The process of replicating concrete structures from intangible concepts isn’t without its challenges, and T.J. is sensitive to the needs of his clientele throughout the homebuilding process. His presence is consistent, the foundation of excellent customer care. “You don’t hire a custom builder to work with his staff,” he says. “I don’t want to grow my business to a point where I become removed from my customers. It’s vital to the success of each project that I can speak directly to my client at any time, and that I am available to answer questions and address concerns.”
explains that the secret to longevity is communication. “I want to ensure that I’m the right fit for each client, and the way to ascertain that is by listening,” he says. “Only by hearing their ideas and truly understanding what they want can we help them achieve their goals.” All too often, T.J. notes, it is the insignificant-seeming details that can make a difference in a builder’s ability to build a client’s dream.
“What does it mean when a client says, ‘I like wood’?” he poses. “It takes a certain intuition, an understanding of the individual’s lifestyle and motivation, in order to truly He believes in cultivating lifelong relationships, and T.J. understand what the right home will look and feel like.”
T.J., who majored in Interpersonal Communication in college, explains that his background allows him to connect more effectively with his clients and colleagues. “Construction is a language all its own,” he says. “Sometimes you have to translate for a client and you want to ensure that you’re not losing the integrity of the message.” While he has become lauded for his high-end custom homes, T.J. notes that his projects are driven by the uniqueness of their qualities, rather than price points. “My interests lie in creating residences that are distinct, sustainable, efficient and structurally sound,” he says. “Our primary criterion is that every home we build must be done with integrity and purpose.” He connects with homes on an intuitive level, understanding how to achieve functionality and aesthetics with each project. “I like to see how floor plans will work in my clients’ lives,” explains T.J. “I want to know that a home will adapt to its surroundings and will minimize its impact on the environment. The most beautiful plans on paper won’t translate if a home doesn’t make sense with the space around it.” In over 15 years of local experience, T.J. has cultivated solid relationships with the region’s most skilled and dependable subcontractors. These individuals, he says, provide the support his company needs to maintain a thriving –and diverseclient base. “We strive to maintain consistency not only in the quality of our work, but in the experience and satisfaction of our clientele,” he says. “We’ll do the best job we can, every time, in our attempts to exceed each client’s expectations. At the end of the day, it’s their home we’re building. We never lose sight of that.”
One of TJ’s passions is supporting youth; here he coaches the Sun Devils Youth Football League.
TJ balances work with family, a very important aspect of his life.
Enhancing the work performed by Nutter Custom Construction is the talented design service offered by T.J.’s professional partner Sybill L. Johnson, an accomplished interior designer. Her personable nature and client-centric approach are in keeping with T.J.’s lofty standards; Ms. Johnson’s on-site showroom and concierge service ensure that clients achieve every detail of their dream residences. “Thanks to our interior design center, we are able to provide homes that are move-in ready,” states T.J. “From towels in the bathroom to silverware in kitchen drawers, we can customize residences to each individual’s needs.” This, he adds, is particularly helpful to the company’s overseas clientele. “We have gone so far as to have refrigerators stocked for new homeowners,” notes T.J. “We do what it takes to care for our clients at every level.”

The Nutter clan is particularly fond of salt water sports including boating, diving and fishing. “Balance is so important,” reflects T.J. of his time outside of work. Though running his company is a demanding endeavor, he asserts that “it is critical to find a place for family, faith and fun in addition to work.”
Nutter Custom Construction handles custom residential building and renovations throughout Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte. Clients appreciate the knowledge, experience and quality that the firm provides, as well as the outstanding customer service that continues years after each project is completed. You'll want to be full of confidence in the fact that you look "drop dead gorgeous"! You can browse through updo picture galleries to help choose the right hairstyle to suit you. Whether it is wedding updos, short hair updos, updos for long hair, or prom updo hairstyles. Discover how to create the perfect hair updo for your face shape, hair color and length of hair. An updo is a hair style that involves arranging the hair instead of allowing it to fall freely. It can be as simple as a ponytail, but is more commonly associated with more elaborate styles intended for special occasions such as a prom, gala or wedding. Hopefully, we've given you the inspiration to go out and try a new look. Whether you're inspired by the 50's, 60's or punk styles of the 70's and 80's, get ideas for re-creating your favorite era. Over the past 14 years, I've created thousands of unique up-dos, each suited to the individual. During the consultation people normally refer to photographs. This is a good starting point, but I like to create a unique sculpture and see hair as an artistic material. IF YOU CAN’T SAY “I LOVE MY HAIR”… YOU NEED A NEW HAIR STYLIST

CASA de LUZ
You Really Can Have It All By Ed Bertha | Photography by Detlev von Kessel
Meandering down scenic Harbor Drive your eyes are drawn to a Tuscan inspired masterpiece, CASA de LUZ. Entering the estate through private gates, anchored by stone columns and mature date palms, the expansive courtyard, accentuated by a 12 foot Italian marble fountain, opens up to display the hand-crafted detail of inlaid travertine and blue granite. Ascending a grand staircase of coral and stone you pass through a ten-foot arched doorway of hand-carved mahogany to an elegant show place of rare imported stone, classically painted murals and fine wood mill work. Visiting each tastefully designed room one quickly gains an appreciation for the exquisite custom features and finishes that abound throughout this 5 bedroom, 6 bath bay front estate. The rear of the home provides beautiful views of Sarasota Bay from the expansive patio of travertine and stone. Descending the bridal staircase of custom copper tiles, imported from Spain, one is ensconced in formal gardens and intimate patios with intimate views across the bay front pool and spa. The pool’s iridescent glass and ceramic tiles are reminiscent of the Medici Palaces of Italy. With over 165 ft. of seawall and dockage for 3 boats/2 lifts, this is a boater's dream with protected water suitable for a mega yacht. And, don't forget the toys because even the most discriminating collector will appreciate the detail in the 2,500 sq. ft. garage, complete with custom cabinetry, flooring and a workshop. What are you waiting for? You really can have it all! CASA de LUZ will host Ringling on the Water, a REAL cares event benefiting The Ringling College of Art + Design in April, 2012. per p esr p s pee c c tt i viev s es Buyer Motivation Why Do People Purchase A Home In Florida? By Patricia Tan
What motivates someone to buy a property in Florida? As a real estate agent working with buyers, many of whom come from other countries, I am always eager to learn why they want to buy a property, as well as what they want to buy. Understanding a buyer’s motivation can shorten the sales cycle and result in a very happy customer. So why do people buy in Florida? Retirement, I hear you say! Yes, Florida is known as a retirement destination, but here on the Gulf Coast we enjoy much more diversity in our population. According to the 2010 census, the median age of residents in Sarasota and Manatee counties was 37.2 years. Recent times have seen an increase in what I would call preretirement purchases. Buyers see the great values available in the market today and decide to purchase a property prior to their retirement, and use it for vacation, or as a rental investment until they are ready to retire. Key factors to consider when purchasing a retirement home may be proximity to shopping and entertainment, access to medical services and ongoing costs associated with the home. Generally speaking, foreigners cannot live here in USA as retirees without pursuing some kind of immigration plan, so many overseas buyers purchase a home to use as a vacation getaway for several weeks or months a year only. For these buyers, a primary consideration may be something that needs little supervision and
management on a day-to-day basis. A condominium or home in a maintenance-free community may be the best fit and allow them to “lock and leave” the property, knowing it will be safe and secure until their return. Lower prices of homes in Florida and the high demand for rental properties has led to an increase in the number of people buying homes to rent out for profit. Buying an investment property is less about the buyer’s personal preferences, and more about the financial opportunity it represents for cash flow and capital appreciation when it sells. Buyers need advice and local expertise in order to make an informed decision. They need to understand rental restrictions which may apply in particular areas or subdivisions and how this can dictate the sort of rentals that are possible, and the desirability of the area to prospective tenants. For those foreigners who wish to settle in our beautiful state and live here full time, buying a home is not enough to give them the right to reside here. They need to consult with an immigration attorney who will work with them to establish the most effective immigration strategy, which may or may not include the purchase of real estate. A visitor’s motivation to live here full time may be driven by many factors –family ties, job and business opportunities, lifestyle options or to provide an American education for their children. Our schools and colleges are great draws for foreign nationals – if they can establish legal residency here, their children may benefit by paying local fees at our colleges. So what motivates someone to buy a home here? That depends ……

La Musica With Piero Rivolta
Welcome To Our 26th Annual Festival By Kelly Gettel Photography by Lemon Tree Photos, Cliff Roles Photography & Bill Somach Photography An invitation to opera and a chance meeting with distinguished pianist Derek Han inspired Piero Rivolta’s creation, La Musica. Now entering its 26th season, La Musica is firmly established on Sarasota’s cultural calendar at the Sarasota Opera House, and beyond. Critically acclaimed, La Musica’s performers have collaborated with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and have graced the opening of the chamber music season at La Scala, the world renowned opera house in Milan, Italy. Guided by Artistic Director, Bruno Giuranna and Associate Artistic Director, Derek Han, La Musica’s mission is to bring together the finest musicians from Europe and America to perform exciting programs of familiar and unfamiliar chamber music. La Musica is steered by executive director Sally Faron and a dedicated board of directors, led by Piero Rivolta. Piero leads with, “The concept of La Musica is very simple. Musicians come here from all over the world; they meet each other, and then play together. It’s not a quartet or quintet that plays together all the time. The musicians come here, discuss music and put together a new piece; they are energized. A quartet that goes around playing the same thing, with the same people, doesn’t play with the passion we have at La Musica. That’s what makes La Musica special, the enthusiasm in the music.” As chamber music La Musica cultivates an intimate relationship between the audience and performers. Typically, chamber music does not utilize many instruments. It may have three to five instruments and usually tops out at ten. Piero shares, “You feel the violin, the cello, and you recognize the voice of each performer because it is not like big symphony music. You can follow the different instruments and the sound is very distinct. It is very alive.” Piero insists La Musica stay true to its roots of bringing new performers together each season. “We have some performers who participate each year, like Bruno and

Derek. The rest we may change. One year we invite a certain artist and the next year we have another.” The formula keeps alive the passion and enthusiasm that is La Musica. When asked what Bruno and Derek bring to La Musica, Piero leans forward and says, “Bruno is a very good teacher and has a magic touch with the performers. He instills a feeling of enthusiasm and draws it out from the young people and that is good. He really creates the atmosphere.” Regarding Derek he adds, “He knows music very well, what works together and will make the right program. It is very important to have the right program. Derek is a very fast thinker in anything he does. He has a very mathematical mind. It’s impressive.” In putting together a season’s performances Piero communicates with Bruno and Derek his feelings for what the market is, what the people want and what he thinks is pleasant. “I try to explain to them and lead them in a certain direction, to what is good for the upcoming season. In the end they are independent in choosing, I just try to assist.” The chamber music played is varied. Some compositions are very deep, like the ones written during the war. To balance a deep performance La Musica adds something more upbeat at the end. “My feeling is we need to leave an impression of sensation. I believe in simple communication and love. In the end we have to let the people be happy when they go home.” What also makes La Musica unique are the open rehearsals. From the very first time the performers are on stage you can attend the rehearsals and watch the music come together. The rehearsals take place at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion of New College of Florida. Piero closes with, “My idea was to create something that will remain for a long time. We are one of the best festivals in the world. We have people coming from all over the world just to listen.” La Musica (941) 366.8450, ext 3 info@lamusicafestival.org www.lamusicafestival.org

per p esr p s pee c c tt i viev s es A Professional Customized Approach To Roofing By William Henry PhD
Over the last 20 years, we have been asked to respond to roofing failures that are the result of inappropriate re-roofing applications to many Florida area buildings. In today’s environment, with the lack of new facility construction, many commercial office and retail facility owners are rehabilitating, retrofitting, and adapting existing space to accommodate growth. The conventional approach is a ‘one-size-fits-all’ service. The response to a call for a re-roofing need or emergency may be restricted to a specific vendor’s application and products. The supporting structure beneath the roof and auxiliary components are often not considered in formulating a reroofing approach. The structural support and miscellaneous components such as air conditioning supports, clerestories, and other appurtenances are often not considered in the application. In summary, a proprietary reroofing company may not take a comprehensive approach to your reroofing challenges by not considering all of the other facets that could impact the useful life of the roof system. With Florida’s vulnerability to high category wind storms and ultra violet light, certain roofing applications may fail or break down over time. City Building Inspectors cannot be relied upon to provide quality assurance. The roofing contractor may not have access to thorough design details or specifications. In short, there is no documentation on which to base quality assurance. RGA/ANMAR provides a professional customized re-roofing approach. In order to address this market, RGA, which is a fullservice design company, and ANMAR Builders, which primarily is a Florida based re-roofing, state licensed general contractor specializing in re-roofing systems, have formed a strategic alliance to address the need for a more customized approach to unique building and re-roofing challenges. The services that RGA/ANMAR will provide include, but are not limited to, the following: Services provided: • Professional Design-Build Approach – Provide both a professional design service as well as construction for a firm price.
• Commercial Properties/Multi-Family Residential - We provide design/build services to address the waterproofing needs on existing commercial structures. • Customized Application - The RGA/ANMAR team will conduct a professional independent assessment of existing or potential roofing problems and/or water penetration issues and devise a customized re-roofing application. Why we are different: • Independent Inspections - Our design professionals will independently inspect your roof and several potential approaches to cure any water penetration problems. • Comprehensive Assessment of Existing Conditions - While conducting inspections, we will review other potential contributing factors, such as, the supporting structural systems, openings - such as skylight clerestories, scuppers, drains, AC support systems, and coping caps. • Non-Proprietary Approach – RGA/ANMAR will survey the market for the best, most cost effective waterproofing approaches towards addressing these discovered problems. Only then will they devise the most optimal, cost effective solution. • Complete Permit Documentation - We will provide permitable documents which include product approval applications (NOAs) and construction details. • Quality Assurance - During and after the conduct of the work, we will provide quality assurance and certify that the work is in conformance to the design contract documents and industry standards. • Integrated Systems Approach – We will also address other building components that could affect the integrity of the entire waterproof building envelope. Recovery and Energy Conservation - Saves You Money! • Recovery - If your failure to your roofing systems was due to poor manufacturer materials or labor workmanship, we may be able to help recover the cost of the repair. • All Roofing and Auxiliary Components - Part of our service is to offer energy saving roofing components, such as, special insulation systems, solar panels, special finish coatings, utility company incentives, insurance discounts

per p esr p s pee c c tt i viev s es The Recipe For More Back Spin On Your Wedge Shots By Chad Jones
Most amateur golfers are amazed on how the pros get so much backspin on their wedge shots around the green. I am going to let you in on the recipe. One of the most over looked reason is the selection of the correct golf ball. If you do not play a soft-covered ball (example: Titleist ProV1) then no matter how hard you try you will not be able to give the golf ball back spin. Playing a soft covered ball used to mean balata balls, which were expensive, less durable and generally didn’t go as far. However, recent breakthroughs in ball technology mean that you can now play a ball with a soft cover, that is still durable, and also is great for distance, but they are and will be the most expensive balls on the market. Don’t buy into all these discount distance balls, because it really does not matter your club head speed or ball speed. After all the testing I have done on ball fitting with my players everyone should be playing a soft cover ball, because getting closer to the hole saves you more shots than 3 to 5 yards more off the tee!
The second ingredient is the grooves on the club face of your wedges. Even a top professional would struggle to generate back spin with a wedge that had dirty, or worn out grooves. It is paramount that you must make sure the grooves on the clubface are clean before you play a round. I suggest considering replacing your wedge every year and no more than every two years. The rumor on tour is that Phil Mickelson gets new wedges every month. The third ingredient is playing conditions. Usually, a professional is playing shots from tightly mown fairways, onto usually fairly fast greens with undulation. I see amateurs trying to get spin from teed up lies out of the rough onto flat greens. What happens is that the long grass between the ball and the clubface produce flier lies that have top spin. The final ingredient is technique. Professional golfers, when using their wedges, hit the ball with a square to slightly open, downward stroke. This puts their clean clubface onto their softcovered ball and compresses it against the tightly mown fairway, applying back spin to the golf ball. As long as the green has a certain amount of “give” the ball will stop and spin back.
Here is the final secret that a professional will use to get the ball to stop. They have the trail hand, work under towards the sky during and after impact to add loft and causes the ball to slide up the face. This will produce the backspin that you see on television every week from the PGA tour players. Use these ingredients and you will have the recipe for getting control of the spin of your golf ball around the green. If you have any question please contact your local PGA professional.
