any homeowners make the mistake of thinking they can finally stop obsessing about their lawn once the leaves start to turn. But think again. According to the experts at This Old House, letting your lawn go dormant in the fall is actually one of the worst mistakes you can make, and can lead to a disappointing showing come spring. Here are five steps you should take right now that will yield big results when backyard weather returns:

QUICK TIP

Hire the experts. Professional landscapers can conceptualize your landscaping and help you maintain your budget. When hiring a company to complete your landscaping design, you can also take advantage of other services they offer.

RAKE. While an array of colorful autumn leaves sprinkled across your lawn can look lovely and be great fun for the little ones, they’re doing a big disservice to your grass by blocking valuable nutrients from the sun and trapping in moisture. So rake and blow the leaves away as often as you can. MOW. Your grass might not be growing as fast, but it is growing, up until the first hard frost, in fact. Make sure you keep it trimmed to its ideal height of 2.5 - 3 inches, which is short enough to allow the sunlight in, but not so short that it stunts the root system.

AERATE. Aeration—or punching holes in the soil to break it up—prevents your yard from becoming compacted and covered over with thatch: a thick layer of roots, stems and other debris that blocks water, oxygen and important nutrients from getting into the soil and nurturing your lawn’s roots. You should aerate right before you… FERTILIZE. Feeding your lawn with fertilizer after you’ve aerated will help protect the roots from freezing and provide energy for your lawn to bounce back in the spring. A soil test is always a good idea to find out what blend of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium will best serve your grass. SEED. Fall is also the right time to tend to bald patches in your lawn and shore up existing grass by seeding. Dense grass is the best defense against springtime weeds, and fall offers the ideal conditions for seeding, including cool nights, lots of moisture, a less intense sun and a ground that is still warm. Annual Ryegrass is often used with the warm-season grasses to extend the grazing season. Before the winter solstice, tropical moisture is expected to meet colder, more stable air sweeping southward as frontal storms. Annual Ryegrass grows best when nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees. With the first gratuitous cold front in Nove ber, plan to overseed warm season perennial lawns and permanent grass pastures with Ryegrass. This emerald green herbage will grow over a wide range of soil pH levels but grows best at a pH level of 6.0 to 7.0. Only buy seed varieties adapted to the Southeastern United States as northern varieties will be easily damaged by leaf rust in Florda’s milder temperatures and heavy dew. Seeding rates range from 20 to 30 pounds per acre. Shop around for the best prices. The feed and hardware stores like Gilbert’s Hardware and General Store tend to price 50 pound bags much lower than the nurseries at the big name brand stores. The hardy high-quality forage needs four to six weeks in North Central Florida to establish before a hard frost and two full months to grow deep roots which benefit crop farmers by na urally aerating compact soils with a prolific root system that the summer plant roots can follow. Up north, farmers plant Winter Rye shortly after harvest to prevent erosion. Before broadcasting seed and in the transitional period, having the Bahiagrass short is the key to success. Although tolerant of frequent and intense grazing, reducing foraging until the winter grass is established is recommended. — Julie K. Castro

REAL ESTATE According to FloridaRealtors®, the Sunshine State has come into focus during a study of major U.S. cities examining the number of building permits granted in the first half of 2021. The study revealed that building contractors are confiden ly investing in Florida in response to the demand for single-family homes. The city of Ocala now holds the top position in the state by the percentage of increase in permits since the same period last year. A total of 2,917 permits granted through June represented a 79% increase. Second to Ocala by percentage, but fourth by sheer volume is the southwest area of Cape Coral-Fort Myers with 5,150 permits, marking a 77% increase. By comparison, the largest U.S. city in land area Jacksonville (8,513 permits), and both Lakeland-Winter Haven and North Port-Sarasota (each with 6,303 permits), exceeded Ocala in overall single-family housing production. Findings released by the U.S. News & World Report has eleven Florida cities in the top twenty as the ‘Best Places to Retire’ in the United States. Ocala ranks sixteenth overall. While tenth place amid all Florida cities, the concensus of the seniors who were polled is that along with the bonus of no state tax, they are fin ing a good sense of well-being in their hometowns.
