NOTABLE OLD SCHOOL VEGAS FAMILIES THAT HELPED SHAPE LAS VEGAS REAL RICH HISTORY - THE PAIUTE INDIANS AND THE MORMONS
very issue we have focused on old-school families that helped shape Las Vegas into what it is today. In previous issues, we’ve covered my late grandfather, Louis Wiener, Jr., who was
the longest tenured attorney in all Southern Nevada to this day. We’ve featured A.E. Al Cahlan, who was a prominent news publisher in Las Vegas, Alan and Gary Davis of Davis Funeral Homes and Memorial Park, the Binion family who had quite an integral part of development in Las Vegas. We’ve also had the opportunity of featuring two of the most prominent criminal defense attorneys in town, David Chesnoff and the late William Bill Terry. Additionally, we featured another prominent Las Vegas pioneer, also known
as the “First Lady of Gambling”, and the “First Lady of Charity”, Judy Bayley. We showcased “Our City Gone Dark” during the height of the pandemic, followed by the Moran Family, a local family with a long-standing affiliation with law enforcement. A few other interesting features we did included “The First Lady of Las Vegas”, Helen J. Stewart, Gary Ackerman of Gaudin Ford and all his contributions to our Las Vegas community, Herbert Gerson, who was the Executive Housing Director long ago in Las Vegas. We had an inclusion for the Freed’s Bakery family, who has been baking in Las Vegas for three generations, a nice piece about media mogul, Jim Rogers, the iconic Goodman family we’ve showcased multiple times and their incredible legacy.
Most recently, we had an incredible sit-down dinner with nonother than Meyer Lansky II. To say we’ve been honored to revel in Las Vegas’ fine and rich history, is an understatement. But recently I’ve been thinking about who was here before all those phenomenal and epochal Las Vegas locals. Yes, the Paiute Indians and the Mormons had a significant beginning in Las Vegas dating all the way back to AD 700. Baskets, petroglyphs, pictographs, and additional evidence all support the fact that the Paiute Indians moved to areas like Tule Springs and the Gypsum Caves long, long ago. They were said to migrate between nearby mountains in the summer and spend winters in the valley, near Big Springs.
In 1844, the Las Vegas Valley was still apart of Mexico. With the US preparing for possible war with Mexico, when the Unites States Army Corps of Engineers arrived, they established a clandestine fort and set up their camp at the Las Vegas Springs. The end of the war resulted in the Las Vegas region becoming a part of US territory.
Then in 1855, William Bringhurst was said to have led a group of 29 Mormon missionaries from Utah to the valley. They built a 150-square-foot fort near a creek; however, the summer heat led to difficulty growing crops and ultimately led to tension among leaders of the small Mormon community, and they abandoned the fort. (The fort remains were preserved in the Old Las
irritating the old fields and renamed the area Las Vegas Rancho. It came to be known as the best stop on the Old Spanish Trail, as Gass made wine in the fields at his ranch. Gass ended up losing the ranch due to mismanagement with a Mormon syndicate, Archibald Stewart and had to give Archibald the ranch to pay off a lien Steward had on the property. Archibald’s wife was Helen J. Stewart, and she became the 1st Las Vegas postmaster in 1884.

Skincare Movement
Skincare has made a comeback in full force. The trend toward skincare reects a growing desire for self-care and an emphasis on health and wellness in all aspects of life. With the rise of social media and easy access to information, people are becoming more aware of the importance of caring for their skin. Skincare has become essential to our daily routines, and people are looking for ways to improve their skin health. As the summer approaches, here are my favorite tips to keeping your skin healthy and protected.
Wear sunscreen:
It's crucial to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful rays.
Hydrate:
Drinking plenty of water will keep your skin hydrated and looking healthy.
Avoid Hot showers:
Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, try and take lukewarm showers instead.
Use a lightweight moisturizer:
In the summer, you may want to switch to a lighter moisturizer that won't feel heavy on your skin.
Exfoliate gently:
Exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells and keep your skin looking fresh, but make sure to use a gentle exfoliate to avoid irritating your skin.
Wear sunscreen:
It's crucial to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful rays.
Limit sun exposure:
Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
Skincare regimen:
If in doubt about what products are best for you, schedule an appointment with a skincare professional who can analyze your skin and start you on a regular skin care regimen suited just for you.
The Real Voice of Milli Vanilli
Documentary – Allow us to Reintroduce You to
JODIE ROC C O
Anew documentary about Milli Vanilli makes its world premiere to screen at the 2023 Tribeca Festival, which took place June 7 through 18 in New York City. Directed by Luke Korem, the lm traces the origins and downfall of singers Rob & Fab. Interviews were conducted with the cast including Fabrice Morvan, Timbaland, Ingrid S e g i e t h , F r a n k F a r i a n , C h a r l e s S h a w , B r a d Howell, Linda Rocco, Jodie Rocco, and Diane Warren. Real Vegas had the opportunity to attend the lming of Las Vegas' own awardwinning vocalist, Jodie Rocco who has been dubbed “The Real Voice of Milli Vanilli” back in July of 2022.
In 1988 in Rosbach, Germany, Jodie was asked to sing with her twin sister Linda on a track titled “Girl You Know It's True” by a new, unknown group called Milli Vanilli. When the single Jodie and her sister went back in the studio and recorded vocals on 22 tracks for the group's rst album “All or Nothing”. The album sold more than 46 million copies and generated 3 number-one hits on Billboard's Top 100. The biggest-selling single, “Girl I'm Gonna Miss You”, a duet, sold more than 6 million copies in the US alone. The group won a Grammy and three American Music Awards. In the fall of 1990, Milli Vanilli went back in the studio and recorded another 23 tracks for their second release “Keep on Running”. Jodie was awarded numerous Platinum and Gold records for her work on both releases. She has also worked with top European artists and world stars including Michael Jackson.
A lot of Jodie and the group's history came up during the lming of the documentary, and some interesting topics were discussed in Jodie Rocco’s interview that you will most denitely want to tune in to watch. We look forward to the airing of the new documentaries release and are excited the world premiere took place earlier this year.
Jodie is a multi-talented vocalist and an all-around great person whom we are happy to personally know. She’s the real deal and we’re glad she nally was able to publicly share what went on leading up to the revoking of the group’s Grammy Award. An incident many still remember to this day spanning 30+ years ago and will f o r e v e r b e r e m e m b e r e d i n m u s i c h i s t o r y W e a r e fortunate to have Jodie’s input right here in Las Vegas from what transpired so many years ago (35 to be exact), and for her to be able to share her part of the s t o r y n o w a c r o s s t h e g l o b e w i t h t h e a i r i n g o f t h e documentary.
Jodie Rocco’s interview for the documentary was lmed at Claire Jane Vranian’s studio icjuk.com She created Jodie’s dress for the shoot and allowed us to watch the lming in her atelier.

An Exquisite Affair for a Beautiful Couple
What a magical night the Lewis wedding was. Every specic detail was carefully and meaningfully
chosen. From Isabella's dress which was a one of kind design by Aldo Mencatto, a very wellknown Brazilian fashion designer, with the beautiful lace brought directly from Italy to the rst dance, sang by her late father Trent Carlini. “Love Me Tender” is Isabella's favorite song! Isabella's late father, Trent was the winner of the Next Best Thing and the #1 Elvis tribute artist in the word three times in a row. The rst dance was followed by the "Mom and Bride" dance with the “Slipping Through My Fingers” song by ABBA, covered by Ethan Hodges. Halfway through the dance, the mother of the bride's husband, Ed Bernstein, danced with her and then she called her two sisters, Thalia and Sophia to join them during the second part of the dance. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. Seeing the three of them embracing each other was so beautiful as you could see the strong bond the three sisters share.
I t w a s a n a f f a i r l l e d w i t h l o v e , l a u g h t e r , a n d w i t h m e m o r a b l e moments. The maid of honor was her sister Thalia Trentacarlini and her bridesmaid was her younger sister Sophia Trentacarlini. Isabella walked down the aisle with m u s i c p l a y e d b y a h a r p i s t , t h e songs were specially selected by the bride and groom. They all had a s p e c i a l m e a n i n g f o r t h e m w i t h each song played.
Isabella's bouquet had a charm Thalia made for her with the picture of her dad. It was so emotional seeing her walking alone, but it seemingly felt as though he was with her in the moment.
Isabella's late father was Italian, and her mother is Peruvian, so she made sure both her parents' cultures were incorporated and beautifully represented for her s p e c i a l d a y . S h e h a d s a g e a n d p a l o s a n t o a s a keepsake for her guests, which is said to promote positivity.
We wish Isabella and Dylan Lewis a lifetime of love and success and we thank you for allowing us to share your special day with our readers.

Being a Vegas native, I was very curious
and found myself wondering how this amazing looking establishment landed in a place where there used to just be desert that I h a v e b e e n d r i v i n g b y f o r y e a r s M y r s t impression was that someone must have really t a k e n t h e i r t i m e c r e a t i n g t h i s , a n d t h a t ' s evident as soon as your eyes meet with it. Primo vibes!
I recently met with some of the Real Vegas magazine fam at the bar and enjoyed having a delicious smoked cocktail with a big chunk of ice and caught up as we were waiting 1 more to join us. Once our entire party had arrived, we were sat at our table and greeted by the staff. During the entire visit, our group experienced next-level service from the incredible staff at Basilico.
Photo credit: Louiie Victa Photo credit: Louiie VictaI absolutely loved that the chef made the selections of what dishes to send out to our table. Being our rst time in, and as a chef, you know when that happens, it's more of an honor. Between the cured meats and the burrata in t h e r s t o f f e r i n g , b e i n g h a l f S i c i l i a n m y s e l f , C h e f Francesco Di Caudo was really hitting home with those avors but with a special added layer of chef's unique journey and talents within each dish presented to us. After tasking the rst 2 items chef sent out, I was already sold and everything that followed and was sent our way the remainder of the evening, was consistently in sync with chef's choices within the courses. Chef Francesco Di C a u d o ' s c o o k i n g i s i n d i c a t i v e o f a u t h e n t i c S i c i l i a n cooking and it's no surprise to learn that chef is 100% Sicilian. His modern interpretation of old-world Italian cuisine allows him to honor his past couple with today's global inuences.
Social hour at Basilico is daily from 4-6pm with a custom curated list of eclectic and delicious cocktails at their bar or in the lounge and includes a variety of food specials e v e r y d a y A l - f r e s c o d i n i n g i s e x c e l l e n t a t B a s i l i c o (weather permitting). Chef's Special Tasting Menus run about $85-$150 per person. Basilico is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Dinner is open and served nightly starting at 5pm. You won't be disappointed to come in during social hour and try a smoked cocktail like I had or some of the other cocktails our Real Vegas crew recommends, l i k e t h e F i o r e D i F i a m m a , w h i c h c o n s i s t s o f v o d k a , elderower liqueur, blueberry honey, lavender syrup, lime, lemonade, and pineapple, or the Giardano which boasts gin, a house made basil cordial, mirto verde, and c u c u m b e r S o m e o f t h e d e l i c i o u s m e n u i t e m s w e enjoyed were the Hamachi crudo with pomelo, golden caviar, and buttermilk. The burrata with roasted rainbow carrot salad and sorrel-pistachio pesto was delicious. The Kusshi oysters were fresh and adorned with persimmon, kumquat, and sea beans. And we can't forget about the branzino with yams, porcino, spinach and g sauce, complimented by the excellent risotto with mascarpone cheese, coffee, and chestnut honey avors.
I a p p r e c i a t e t h e e n t i r e e x p e r i e n c e a n d h i g h l y recommend this new next level Vegas local and tourist establishment. Not too far from the strip, and right in the heart of the Southwest for us locals.
Basilico, Chef Francesco Di Caudo, and their amazing staff welcome you to come in and see what all the hype is about, and I will see you in the next edition of Real Vegas Magazine for the rst ever “Real EATS” by Chef Vic
This will be one of my weaknesses when I'm driving home on certain eves, as I will be stopping by the bar for a smoked beverage and a bowl of this cavatelli. And please just give me a spoon!
With ever y dish mentioned, they were loved by us all. But the one
fennel seed, sausage ragu, and a decadent and silky sottocenere cheese. Slip into Summer with Seasonal Sides
By Chef Sam Marvin ofAs a working chef, summer is a time when the bountiful seasonal selection dictates what will complement the protein on our plates at Echo & Rig in Summerlin and Henderson. We are rmly committed to using the freshest, seasonal produce, and summer provides us
with an embarrassment of riches, from perfectly ripe tomatoes to sweet corn to luscious watermelon.
Our delicious preparations of various cuts of steak (Bavette, Hanger, Ribeye, Outside Skirt, to name a few) stand alone on the plate, but truly shine with the addition of one of my favorite summer sides – a colorful combo of ripe tomatoes, diced yellow, red and orange watermelon, refreshing cucumber, and minced red onion, tossed in the simplest vinaigrette made from red wine vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and freshly ground pepper. This dish has it all! Sweet, salty, and acidic, it bursts with avor and is the ideal partner for the richness of the steak. It's super easy to recreate this meal at home. Pick up whatever cut of meat suits your taste at your local market, (or at our Echo & Rig butcher shops in Summerlin and Henderson,) and shop at a local Farmers Market for the rest.
Another Echo & Rig simple summer side super-star is my cream-less creamed corn. A light and healthy take on the butter and cream-laden steakhouse standard, our dish slices a summer-sweet ear of corn lengthwise, which splits the kernels. We scrape everything into a bowl, season with salt and pepper and slowly cook as the corn loses some of its water and thickens in the pot. Creamed corn with no additional fat – another easy-to-make, at-home summer side that will pair beautifully with whatever main is on your plate – meat, poultry, or sh.
Do you see a theme developing here? The best summer sides are simply prepared and honor the individual ingredients. Don't get me wrong, sauces and techniques are wonderful, but sometimes there is nothing better than a sliced, fresh-from-the-sun tomato, drizzled with good olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper, and served with a fresh piece of good baguette. Add a simply grilled steak, chop, or let of sh, and a nice bottle of wine and you have a meal t for a king. For dessert, try sliced farm-fresh strawberries, with a drizzle of good Balsamic vinegar and a grind of fresh pepper served over vanilla ice cream. Delicious!
Summer cooking at home should be easy and make you smile! The whole point is to relax into the season and keep it stress-free. Summer sides bring together all the beautiful colors, textures, and avors of the season served in simple, healthy ways that are good for eating, and good for you too.

Vegan In Vegas
Local Taqueria Tacotarian Wins Big Plus Taverna Costera Gives Options
There're only winners in the plant-based community of Las Vegas, as the city continues to lead the way in both exclusively plant-based eateries as well as ever expanding menu-options at mixed fare restaurants. Residents and tourists alike can always nd something deliciously plant-based in the Las Vegas valley as businesses strive to save the health of the people, and the planet, one meal at a time.
F a n s o f T a c o T u e s d a y h a v e b e e n o c k i n g t o Tacotarian since it opened in 2018 with the original location in the Arts District. Founded by Dan and Regina Simmons along with Carlos and Kristen Corral, they now boasts three Las Vegas and one Henderson location as well as one in San Diego, CA. And it's not just L a s V e g a s v e g a n s p a y i n g a t t e n t i o n , t h e n a t i o n ' s leading plant-based lifestyle magazine VegNews just awarded Tacotarian best Taqueria in the United States in their reader's poll of 2023.
It's an award well deserved. Tacotarian is authentic a v o r s o f M e x i c o , a l l p l a n t b a s e d , w i t h e a c h experience better than the last. My favorite is on the secret menu, the Birria Crunchwrap bursting with avor and a sauce you'll want to drink. There are over 10 types of tacos with your favorite “meat” from Asada to Barbacoa, Chorizo to Al Pastor. You'll be hard pressed to tell the difference from non-plant-based versions. Quesadillas, Enchiladas, Burritos, they're all here, soups and salads and desserts (like my favorite, the coconut cake). There's even a margarita ight to help wash it all down.
Tacotarian is about family, recipes, culture, and service. They treat you like a member of their family, and the food tastes like abuela is in the kitchen working magic. Service time can get a little long when crowded so be warned, but it's well worth the wait. Locations, menus, and more are listed at and congrats tacotarianlv.com on being named best in the USA to them and their staff.
OPTIONS: Vegan and plant-based menu options are the number one growth area in the food industry, with the market expanding 600% over the last ve years. General Manager and Executive Chef Chris Mahon knows this, and is leading the charge at another Arts District favorite, Taverna Costera (1031 S. Main St., Las Vegas, NV tavernacostera.com)
This is my go-to downtown spot when non-vegans are joining me because so far, I haven't seen or had one dish that didn't please. Taverna boasts almost 10 vegan options, each with a Hawaiian are due to Mahon's past experiences there.
T h e K a t s u ( j a c k f r u i t ) i s a f a v o r i t e , b u t t h e B B Q Jackfruit wrap is no slouch, either. Arancini (fried risotto balls) always are a great start and segues nicely into their vegan pizza. There's a breakfast scramble, a hearty stew, and customizable bowls. Dinner entrees include a portabello mushroom scampi and a linguine arrabiata from the heart with just the right amount of spice. The space is eclectic, with Dragon Alley coffee on premises and a rooftop made for parties. The weekends can get loud inside, and often the patio has private parties, so be prepared for a festive environment of art, music and food. They have a full craft cocktail bar as well. Taverna gets it right by not treating vegans as an afterthought (oh, we have fries or salad) but by designing dishes with pride and avor that rival the non-vegan counterparts.

There is power in story! In fact, as humans we are wired to remember stories because they help us make sense of the world around us. They provide hope, perspective and inspiration, and often even compel us into action.
I' ve been telling stories, mostly other people's stories, for the better par t of 30 years. One thing I discovered in the course of my repor ting career is no one can tell “your stor y ” better than you! You lived it. You dreamed it. Maybe you triumphed over it, or maybe it's still in progress. My point is only you can provide your authenticity, your detail and your passion. That's why I'm so excited to be emcee again at this year's What's Your Story event in Las Vegas.
What's Your Story founded by Success Coach Missy Day and co-produced by Branding Exper t Michelle Hausbeck, is unlike any other event I' ve ever experienced. It's a full- day of unscripted stor y sharing and life changing testimony from people who in many cases have overcome incredible circumstances. Not to be confused with a motivational conference, here you won' t see a bunch of PowerPoint slide presentations with bullet point tips or exper ts telling you how to improve your life. On the contrary, What's Your Story is raw and often unpredictable The speakers don' t just offer advice, they dig deep and share their fears, failures and ongoing struggles. The ver y act of sharing their stories becomes a par t of their own growing process. As listeners we can all identify with many of the challenges presented
“We wanted a safe place where people could go and share their stories without judgement,” said Missy Day, founder of What's Your Story, “Both the storytellers and listeners come away changed and better for what they've heard.”
Missy Day Michelle Hausbeck Gerard Ramalho
The Storytellers
This year's power ful lineup includes the return of some previous presenters and some newcomers with stories that will leave the audience tearing up, laughing and cheering all in the same afternoon. Among them are:
Gary Miracle, who found out one Christmas morning he had a rare blood disease and would likely die from it. After a ver y long hospital stay, one that involved having all his limbs amputated, Gar y miraculously sur vived. His stor y is one of recover y and growth and how he has emerged mentally stronger than ever before
Connor Fields, a 3-time U.S. Olympian discusses his journey to become the top BMX rider in the world. Despite a near fatal injur y that should have ended his career, Connor rose to victor y overcoming broken bones, a brain injur y, and his own personal doubt.
Dean Smith speaks on forgiveness. His mother was murdered when he was only 12 years old. Many years later Dean has not only forgiven his mother's k iller, but has developed a relationship with him. It is a relationship that has helped them both heal and touch other lives
Sam Schmidt is a former Indy Racing League driver and current NTT IndyCar Series and Indy Lights series team owner. Sam shouldn't even be alive. After hitting a concrete wall at 180 mph in 2000, his spinal cord was severely injured and left him a quadriplegic. Not only is he alive and well, but he is also still driving!

Operation H.O.P.E. exists to provide help to populations that are typically forgotten by society. After pandemic-related closure of our clinics, we are finally set to re-open as an outdoor clinic for the homeless. GREATEST MEDICAL MINDS
The consensus is that many people e n v i s i o n t h e i r d o c t o r i n t h e i r quintessential garb. Doctors have been wearing specic garments for c e n t u r i e s S o m e o f t h e s e s t a p l e items are still worn today; but let's take a look at the history behind doctors wearing suits, scrubs, and lab coats.
Have you heard of surgeon cuffs on a men's suit?
Simply put, functioning buttons on suit jacket sleeves are called surgeon's cuffs. Sometimes we call them working buttonholes. In the early 19th century, military eld surgeons were required to wear suit jackets. While they were treating wounded soldiers, the doctors would get several different types of stains on their jacket sleeves Many doctors resided in the Savile Row neighborhood of London during this time period. The skilled tailors of Savile Row in London introduced functional buttons on the cuffs of a jacket's sleeve, so that the doctors could roll their sleeves up when needed. Since then, surgeon's cuffs have been synonymous with carefully crafted and high-end men's suits.
Next up: The white lab coat.
This recognizable garment has served as the “uniform” of physicians for over 100 years. You may be surprised to learn that until about 1900, physicians wore black to see their patients since medical encounters were thought of as serious and formal matters. My earliest memories of an experience at the doctor's ofce is the person in the white coat who pricks me with a needle. At virtually every medical school, the rst symbolic act is the "White Coat Ceremony." This is the ceremonial distribution of graduates as they enter into the medical profession. At the end of the19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when medicine became a truly scientic enterprise, we now know the pureness of the color white in the medical eld became the preferred attire of physicians.
The hazmat suit
The hazmat suit has been around for over 500 years. The rst known full body coverage suit with a breathing apparatus designed to protect the person wearing it from biological agents was developed in the 14th century. Plague doctors were given the dangerous task of entering people's homes and conrming they were aficted with the bubonic plague. These suits were the only thing stopping them from catching the plague, which was an almost guaranteed death sentence.
Today, we are living in evolved times in terms of the attire worn by physicians. We still see the white lab coat. But what are we seeing under the coat? Doctors today can often be seen wearing business attire that keeps them looking professional and modern. A well tted dress shirt with no necktie and 5 pocket style pants or actual dress slacks.
I am happy to report that many doctors still wear suits underneath their lab coats. Suits will forever remain a staple in solidifying the person wearing it as someone to take seriously and is oftentimes revered and successful. Female physicians can be seen wearing slacks or a skirt and a dress shirt, or a length-appropriate dress.
Let's give thanks to all the physicians who have impacted our lives. And let's give them a round of applause for caring about how they look under their expected lab coats.

Orthopedic Protection for Pets
By Dr. Johnathan L. SneadDogs/cats are beloved companions to many but are not immune to physical ailments. Taking preventative measures to protect your pets from orthopedic problems is essential. This includes regular exercise to maintain muscle strength and joint flexibility, a healthy diet to maintain a healthy weight and provide crucial nutrients, and a safe environment to prevent accidents and injuries. Additionally, keeping up with regular veterinary visits can help catch any potential problems early on and allow for timely treatment. At Animal Focus Vet, our mission is to create a culture beyond treating the symptoms and educate pet owners to increase their quality of life and extend their pet’s lifespans.
Orthopedic problems refer to any condition or disease that affects pets’ bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, or tendons. These problems can cause pain, lameness, and reduced mobility and affect pets of any age, breed, or size. Ignoring lameness is relatable to driving a vehicle with low tire pressure. The question is not if the failure will happen but when. Addressing one issue can lead to more significant problems. For instance, limping on a limb will create compensation and extra stress on the other limbs. In turn, they lead to additional injury & pain if care is not sought immediately.
below and many others. Preventative care measures provide quality and comfort for every pet.
With summer approaching, it is essential to recognize the signs and symptoms that mimic lameness but may be more serious such as thermal burns of the paws or other orthopedic issues. Please consider that even a 5 to 10-minute walk on a hot surface can lead to thermal burns. This is extremely painful for pets and may not be noticeable for several hours after the initial burn. If you have any questions we are always here to help at Animal Focus Vet.
COMMON ORTHOPEDIC PROBLEMS IN PETS:
1. Trauma or injury: Dogs can get injured due to accidents, falls, or fights with other animals, resulting in limping or favoring a limb.
2. Hip/elbow dysplasia: This genetic condition affects the hip/ elbow joint and can cause pain, stiffness, and lameness.
3. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in pets. It is most common in older pets but may also affect younger animals.
4. Cruciate ligament injuries: The cruciate ligaments are two bands of tissue in the knee joint that help stabilize the joint. Damage to these ligaments can cause pain, instability, and lameness. This is a common injury in athletes as well.
5. Patellar luxation: This is a condition where the kneecap slides out of place, causing lameness and discomfort.
6. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD): This condition affects the spinal discs and can cause pain, weakness, and paralysis in pets.
7. Elbow dysplasia: This genetic condition affects the elbow joint and can cause pain, stiffness, and lameness.
8. Bone Fractures: Fractures of the bones can be caused by trauma, cancer, or injury, resulting in severe pain and reduced mobility.
9. Growth plate injuries: Growth plates are areas of developing bone in young animals. Damage to these areas can cause abnormal bone growth and deformity.
10. Bone cancer: Harrowing condition leading to swelling, and lameness with potential fracture of the bone.

25 YEARS OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE
THE NECK AND BACK CLINICS
GREATEST MEDICAL MINDS OF LAS VEGAS
Like many things in life, you have choices. Some are more important than others, like when you need to find a doctor you can trust. You may start with asking friends or another doctor, or you may search for options online.
The Neck and Back Clinics (NBC) is proud to tell you what differentiates our team of chiropractors and staff members from others, and we welcome you to discover the difference in our care.
Since its founding 25 years, NBC has been organized and operated as a privately owned company, not a random marketing co-op. Benjamin S. Lurie is a Chiropractic Physician and serves as NBC’s CEO. Matthew C. Olmstead is a Chiropractic Physician and COO. For years, they have been business partners focused on extraordinary patient care. Along with a team of 18 additional Chiropractic Physicians, certified chiropractic assistants and clinic support staff, the group has grown to care for patients at seven clinics throughout the Valley. In fact, NBC has treated more than 100,000 patients!
With that footprint, never-ending training and education is paramount for our doctors. The entire team attends training sessions locally and at top sites throughout the country. This training keeps them abreast of the latest research and treatment techniques from which patients benefit. Examples include:
• Whiplash and Spinal Trauma – Life Chiropractic College West
• Manipulation Under Anesthesia – Southern California University of Health Services
• Whiplash and Brain Traumatology – Spine Research Institute of San Diego
• Board Certified in Chiropractic Spinal Trauma
• Advanced Proceedings in Whiplash and Brain Trauma – Spine Research Institute of Sandiego
• “Crash” into Vehicular Trauma: A Medicolegal Perspective – College of Forensic Science
• Sports Injuries & Nutritional Needs of Athletes – Southern California University of Health Sciences
• Additional courses: Nutrition for Musculoskeletal Trauma, Preparation Tips for Trial &
• Deposition, Benefits of Spinal Manipulation, Risks of Spinal Manipulation, and Graston Technique
• In addition, the leaders of NBC are members of count-
less medical-related boards and organizations within Southern Nevada, many in leadership positions. They are proud of multiple accolades based on their contributions to the medical community. Examples include:
• With his background, experience, and leadership talents, Dr. Lurie served 8 years in public safety and protection (2010-2018) as President of the Chiropractic Physicians’ Board of Nevada and as chair for the legislative committee.
• Dr. Lurie was reappointed by Governor Sisolak on October 31, 2022 for his third term on the Chiropractic Physicians Board of Nevada.
• Dr. Lurie was the recipient of two awards for Chiropractic Board of the Year recognized by the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards for his leadership and the boards’ participation in public safety and public protection in Nevada.
• Lay Board member for Southern Nevada Disciplinary Committee for Nevada State Bar
• National Board of Chiropractic Examiners District IV Director
• Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards – Bylaw and Ethics Committee
Both Doctors Lurie and Olmstead have advanced certification in auto accidents from the esteemed Spine Research Institute of San Diego. The Institute is a leader in research and training in whiplash and brain injury traumatology. This ever-changing field of study is imperative to chiropractic physicians in treating patients who have suffered from auto accidents. This is yet one more example of The Neck and Back Clinics’ ongoing commitment to training and education.
Together with a highly trained and experienced team, NBC also invests in the latest diagnostic and treatment equipment for each clinic. Discover the difference at NBC. Start by learning more at theneckandbackclinics.com or by calling 702.644.3333 to schedule an appointment at one of our clinics.

From Boarding Schools and Tough Neighborhoods to Mr. Natural Universe Then, the Ultimate Success of Being a Phenomenal Stand-up Father in L as Vegas
Meet the Real Ric o Elbaz
By Candice Wienerhe epitome of what success looks like truly varies from Tman to man in our community. While some view the ashy lifestyle, fancy cars, big houses to entertain in and show off as a token of their achievements, there are also many other humble and rich men who view family and their children as a major part of their wealth and prosperity.
Let's face it, some men who thought they were cut from the right kind of cloth and had what it takes to be a good father, simply aren't. As a mentor once told me, “Why do we not spank a baby when they soil their pants? Because they simply don't know better.” Well, that's also very true and applicable to men who never knew how to be a stand-up father who would be honored to cherish, support, and love their children like no other.
What Rico didn't envision at a younger age, was his own natural paternal instincts that would kick in, before he ever even had a notion that he wanted to have children of his own. Always being a fan of seeing fathers that whole-heartedly support their children, especially
their young daughters has always tugged on my h e a r t s

supportive father doting on his beautiful little girl and desiring to provide her with everything he can in life to become the incredible and phenomenal young lady and ultimately the young woman she was designed to be.
Although that should be reversed, and we should be outraged when we learn of an abusive father, that's sadly become accepted as the societal norm and the latter of nding an inspirational and supportive father that creates a launching pad for
MY GOAL IN LIFE IS ABOUT HELPING TO INFLUENCE THE NEW GENERATION TO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES AND KNOW THAT WITH TRUE, HARD WORK, AND DEDICATION, ANY THING IS POSSIBLE.
his children to catapult from and strive ahead to the best of their ability is seemingly more far and few between. Well, that's certainly not the case when you meet Mr. Rico Elbaz. We recently got to catch up with Rico and go over some details about his life and what inspires him to continue to be the best possible father he can be to his 3 children.
Rico says, “My goal in life is about helping to inuence the new generation to believe in themselves and know that with true, hard work, and dedication, anything is possible. I'm a living example of that. This is something I have discovered through my true-life experiences, and as young kid growing up in boarding schools, and in some very tough neighborhoods, I quickly learned at a young age that I had to develop my inner strength for survival.
As tough as my life was as a kid, it was probably my biggest learning experience I have ever had.
Because of my checkered past, I thought I never wanted to have kids, or to even have my own family one day. I was terried of it since my dad wasn't in the picture. I didn't know how or what I needed to do to be a good dad or even be a good example. This is not a joke when people say life is your best teacher and/or school you can have. On 10/14/2008 my rst son Valentino was born. Then in 2014 my other son Nicholas was born. I call him my mini-me since he looks and acts just like me when I was his age! Lol… And in 2019, just 2 days after my birthday, I had my daughter. She is by far my biggest gift. I believe that every dad needs to have a daughter to feel that kind of love and connection.
When my kids were born, I had 2 choices… I could blame my past and end up being like my past, or I could use my past to become the best dad and person I can be!”, continues Rico.
“I am proud to say that I am the best dad, and I was thankfully able to help so many people through my life because of it and my past life experiences. That's why I always say to whoever needs to hear it: In life things happen for a reason… as hard as things are in the moment, they will always lead to bigger things if you use the lessons right to push and guide you. I guess I needed to experience and feel that pain and those tears that I had as a child to better understand people and to use my personal experiences to help others.
I have passion for travel and love to experience other cultures. I have been so fortunate throughout my career in entertainment, to have created the most amazing memories of my life. And all these amazing experiences have allowed me to inspire others to live life to the fullest and fulll their wildest dreams. My biggest obstacle has b e e n m a k i n g a s t a n d f o r o t h e r p e o p l e a n d t r u l y believing in them. Most people are so busy and do not give themselves the opportunity to recharge their lives and do things that makes them happy; like exploring the world, or pursuing other dreams, simply because they don't feel like they deserve it. I've been there before…
And I know exactly how that feels… I like to tell people to remember you have one life. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is not guaranteed for anyone, but what you can do today is completely up to you. So, make the best out of it and live in the NOW and do it with as much love that you can give and receive. I'm a rm believer that love and happiness is the source of everything.”
Rico was the lead in a popular Vegas show for 14 years. He currently owns a successful retail shop on the Las Vegas Strip and creates matching looks for fathers and s o n s , a n d m o t h e r s a n d d a u g h t e r s R i c o a l s o s t i l l currently models in his free time and is a sales executive that benets clients who share the same passion of traveling and exploring different states, countries, and cultures.
We asked Rico, “What do you want to be remembered for on this earth?”
Rico replied, “No matter how other people perceive me, whatever it will be, I am a simple man with big dreams and a huge heart. I'm all about sharing the love and giving joy to my family and the people around me. I always put my faith, my family, and other people rst. I never stop ghting to make those dreams a reality and to be a better father and example to my kids and others in our community.”
ave you ever been in an accident where you injured Hyour face, your head, or your back and spine?
Well ght fans and accident survivors, I'm Roy "Big Country" Nelson, a professional MMA ghter who knows a thing or two about taking hits and recovering from injuries and cashing checks! Today, I have the honor of speaking with the renowned surgeon and ophthalmologist, Dr. David I Malitz with over 25 years of experience. We'll discuss what is the LITZ Test, and why LITZ Tests are crucial for lawyers, doctors and ghters like me, and anyone who's been in an accident.
As Floyd Mayweather Jr. would say, "I ght for that check. I'm in the check cashing business."
Today in the medical and legal industry, it has been more competitive and cutthroat like ghting. Many lawyers and doctors have responsibilities to their accident victims by providing the best possible care and advocating for their clients' rights. That is why it is crucial to implement a comprehensive intake protocol that prioritizes your clients' and patients who have been involved in an accident.
Symptom Severity Scores Referral System:
By Roy NelsonDr. Malitz uses this simple tool that anyone can use called Symptom Severity Scores Referral System that was made for doctors, lawyers, and even the patient to see if they need the LITZ Test for further evaluation.
Anyone can check their symptoms that have been apparent after an accident. It is 20 simple questions. If you score 100 Points or more - LITZ Test Recommend Protocol is recommended.
Following an accident, it is relatively common for a person to experience some level of dizziness. While the injury may be diagnosed as whiplash, injuries to the neck and spine can also affect the area of the brain which is responsible f o r c o o r d i n a t i o n , a n d b a l a n c e A n y t i m e t h e n o r m a l feedback from the neck area, at the base of the skull, is altered, the signaling which sends information to our vestibular system may also be affected. Other symptoms i n c l u d e n e c k p a i n , d i f c u l t y c o n c e n t r a t i n g , d i f c u l t y focusing, lapses in memory, a slowdown of the normal thought processes, and a feeling of movement, even while one is sitting still. The LITZ Test is a tool that helps detect and diagnose TBI-related injuries, soft and naked injuries such as c o n c u s s i o n , d e t a c h e d r e t i n a , t h a t m i g h t n o t b e immediately noticeable or visible right away. The LITZ Test is cost effective and helps determine and gain valuable insights into the patients' injuries and build a stronger case and faster recovery by utilizing the benets of integrating these assessments into the patient and client intake process by providing objective evidence that is cost effective and helps supports the presence of injuries before using more expensive tools like MRIs and CT scans.
What is the LITZ Test?
The LITZ Test (Light Imaging Trauma Zone Test) is a tool that helps after an accident to detect naked injuries to the eye, trauma to the brain with 4 of the 12 cranial nerves on a cellular level using light and direct visualization. LITZ Test analyzes and helps identify trauma to the central nervous system, optic nerves, and deciencies, damages and imbalances through the eye that affects the body and brain that is caused by an accident.
I was told it is like when I am in a ght, it's not just your body that takes a hit, but your eyes can also be affected because your eyes are connected to 4 of the 12 cranial nerves controls. Examples are like seeing stars, blurred vision, and loss of balance. By conducting the LITZ Test, the doctor can assess the extent of the damage and provide the appropriate treatment for a speedy recovery.
Embracing the LITZ Test as part of your intake protocol, you can provide comprehensive support to your accident v i c t i m s . T h e s e a s s e s s m e n t s o f f e r v a l u a b l e i n s i g h t s , documents injuries, and provides objective evidence to bolster your case le. Prompt identication enables you to guide your clients toward appropriate medical care while building a strong case on their behalf. Reassured by the power of these assessments, you can condently navigate the legal and medical process, advocating for your clients' a n d p a t i e n t ' s r i g h t s a n d e n s u r i n g t h e y r e c e i v e t h e compensation and treatments they deserve.
Why is the LITZ Test important?
The LITZ Test is essential for anyone who is in an accident like a slip and fall, work-related, or a motor vehicle accident that has symptoms because it helps us identify underlying issues that may have resulted from the impact of injuries from an accident. The LITZ Test is a specialized assessment that general doctors, physical therapists can miss, that is why Dr. Malitz and other doctors use the Symptom Severity Scores Referral System to see if they need the LITZ Test. By understanding these symptoms, we can develop and target a course of action and treatments. This allows the accident victims to regain their physical functionality and resume their daily activities.
I want to thank Dr. Malitz for educating me and giving our readers the knowledge that The LITZ Test allows doctors and lawyers to demonstrate their commitment to their clients' and patients' health and prevent potential complications or long-term damage using early detection for their patients' and clients' well-being.
Accidents can be tough, but with the right tests and treatments we can get through them. Remember, the LITZ Test is like a superpower for doctors and lawyers. There were tons of people all throughout the sprawling ranch property, food and drinks, dancing under the stars to the live band, and you can’t forget about the horses, cowboys, camel, petting zoo and so much more! We saw lots of friendly and familiar faces in their cowboy boots and hats and made some new friends when we were there. A special thank you to the Harris family and awesome team, and the Harris Ranch for the wonderful evening and welcome. Thank you to Michael W. Rogers Photography for the fun photos!
