stablished in 1993, the mission of Nevada childhood Cancer Foundation (NVCCF) is to provide social, emotional, educational, financial and psychological support services and programs to families of ALL children diagnosed with life threatening and critical illness such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell, renal, blood and immunologic diseases and to provide healing arts, and wellness programs to adults touched by cancer. In July 2017, NVCCF opened its new 16,000 square foot facility, the Britney Spears Campus, to accommodate the many services and programs for those who fight a daily battle against cancer and other life- threatening illnesses. The goal of NVCCF is to improve the quality of life for critically ill children in Southern Nevada and for adults touched by cancer. Annually, NVCCF serves over 450 children (infancy to age 18) and their families as well as over 1,000 adults touched by cancer living in Southern Nevada. Within 48 hours of receiving a referral, NVCCF service professionals work in tandem to identify the financial, educational, and psyc hological needs for critically ill children and their families. These referrals originate from local hospital personnel, out-patient medical and oncology clinics. In June 2008, NVCCF introduced the Education Services Program and opened the first in patient classroom in the state of Nevada located at Sunrise Children’s Hospital. The
In September 2011, NVCCF announced the addition of a local foundation into its programs which provides health, wellness, and emotional support for adults diagnosed and touched by cancer along with their school age children and caregivers. The Caring Place Program serves as a complement to medical treat ment by providing Reiki, reflexology, yoga, stress management, massage, wellness activities, support groups, counseling, and various other services for adults diagnosed with cancer. In 2016, NVCCF also announced the addition of The ORION Cancer Grant which provides financial support for basic living needs to adults in cancer treatment and in financial crisis. In 2020, NVCCF became an approved site for social work clinical internships by the Nevada State Board of Socia Work Examiners for social workers (post-masters) to attain their clinical license for direct individual and family counseling. Additionally, NVCCF is a selected facility for student interns completing their practicum for the University of Nevada Las Vegas Master of Social Work program. Since 1996, NVCCF has hosted Camp Cartwheel a summer camp at Torino Ranch for 200 critically ill children, their siblings, and children whose parents are diagnosed with cancer. This overnight and medically supervised outdoor camp experience provides hope, courage, and an escape from the ramifications of fighting disease.
NVCCF offers over 40 programs and services AT NO COST for critically ill children, caregivers, and adults touched by cancer living in Southern Nevada. NVCCF is not affiliated with any national organizations and therefore relies on the Southern Nevada community for financial support of its programs and services.

Saving Animals & Serving Our Community By Sheryl Green

It’s no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic has hit our tourism town hard. With more than 30% of the population out of work, people are struggling to provide for their pets now more than ever. With support from GreaterGood.org and a grant from the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation, Hearts Alive Village has expanded Kendall’s Kupboard to become the Crisis Pet Food Distribution Center for the state of Nevada. The pet food pantry has gone from serving 300 pets each month, to serving close to 3,000. They also work with a number of other rescues, human food pantries, and cat trappers to provide pet food where it’s needed.
From day 1, Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas has been about more than animal rescue. Founder and Executive Director, Christy Stevens, knew that in order to solve the problem of overwhelming pet homelessness in the valley, the organization would need to focus on people. When a family surrenders their pet to the animal shelter, it’s rarely because they no longer love or want their animal. Most often, it’s because they can’t afford their pet and don’t see any other options. Hearts Alive Village is working to change that. It all started in 2013 with their first program, Kendall’s Kupboard, named for Christy’s daughter and inspiration behind the rescue. This pet food pantry was designed to assist families who want to keep their beloved pets but are unable to afford food. Since its inception, the program has fed between 200 and 300 pets each month. Unfortunately, food wasn’t the only support Vegas pet parents needed. Calls began to come in from individuals whose fur babies were sick or injured. Challenged with astronomically high vet bills and an inability to get credit, their parents were facing an impossible decision… let their pets suffer, surrender them to the shelter in the hope that they’d receive treatment, or have them “economically euthanized.” No pet parent should ever face that decision. Hearts Alive Village began providing community animals with treatment, assisting pet parents to cover the funds above what they could handle. When animals are suffering due to their family’s inability to access care, the Village Fund is there to provide assistance for as many as possible.
With more than 50% of their annual budget going to veterinary costs, Hearts Alive realized that the next logical step was to open their own veterinary clinic where care can be given to the rescues’ animals and community animals in need, at a fraction of the cost. The Pet Adoption and Wellness Center is under construction and set to open this fall. The full-service, low-cost veterinary clinic will be the first of its kind in the state and will provide a much-needed service to our financially- devastated community. In addition to veterinary services, the Wellness Center will feature grooming and short-term boarding. With these programs, the organization can keep pets out of the shelter and where they belong – in their original homes with the families that love them. While the future of Vegas is unclear, one thing is for sure. Hearts Alive Village will continue their mission, nurturing a compassionate society where animals are supported both in their homes and on the journey to find a home. Meet Las Vegas Local 14
Darrel Jordan Jr.
Before Jordan obtained his position within the NBA, Darrel has helped through the Hard 2 Guard program so that hundreds of kids could have the opportunity to go to college and 15 kids play division 1 from his own training program he created. Basketball fans and students of Darrel’s agree on one solid fact. He’s the man. His fans agree that he was the best skilled trainer in all of Las Vegas and the Orlando Magic is lucky to have gained a Las Vegas local. His passion has proven immeasurable and his love for the game is 2nd to none.
Basketball fans and students of Darrel’s agree on one solid fact. He’s the man. F
or those of you who don’t know Darrel Jordan Jr., he is a long time Las Vegas local who started his basketball career right here in Las Vegas and has always been a natural instructor, trainer, mentor, baller and shot caller. Born and raised in Oklahoma, he’s been a long time Las Vegas resident. The many who do recognize him from our local Las Vegas community, know he started his career at Cimarron Memorial High School right here in Las Vegas as a basketball trainer and is was revealed very quickly that he commands respect for the love of the game, from his mentees, friends and anyone he comes into contact with. He is not a self-proclaimed shot caller; yet his friends, teachers, peers and colleagues would come to recognize this known fact about Darrel at a very young age. On or off the court. Since graduating from high school in 1998, Darrel Jordan went on to play college basketball and finished his degree at the university of Nevada Reno, although his playing career didn’t end at Nevada Reno. Upon graduation Darrel had the opportunity to train professional players starting with fellow high school teammate Marcus Banks. This led to him training multiple NBA players and it was followed with a coaching opportunity at Grayson community college in Texas that presented itself shortly thereafter. Following the year Darrel spent coaching college, he jumped into the AAU basketball scene and continued to train professional players. “In doing that I had an opportunity to help with the Toronto Raptors summer league team under coach Dwayne Casey (coaches the Detroit Pistons now). I also had the opportunity to help with pre-draft camp for the Milwaukee Bucks under coach Jason Kidd (now an assistant with the LA Lakers) and General Manager John Hammond (now the General Manager Of the Orlando magic) with help of his agent/ friend Mike Higgins I obtained a position with the Orlando Magic and coach Steve Clifford.” Jordan has had the opportunity to be featured in Sports Illustrated because of the work he has done and time he has put in training players. He’s also had been spotlighted on NBA Television with Hall of Fame Point Guard Gary Payton for help with a former NBA lottery pick.
As a personal long-time friend for 20+ years, I can handsdown say aside from his skills on the basketball court, Darrel Jordan Jr. (known to many of his elementary, junior high and high school friends is commonly still referred to as Pnutt) and we all including myself have very fond memories of him off the court as well. Darrel was and still is simply a friend who has a ton of heart. You couldn’t see him and his gigantic grin in the hallways at school and not instantly feel his positivity and the happiness that he radiates. And that undoubtedly is true of what his clients, students and colleagues would say about him. Where his career will take him next is to be decided. The basketball industry knows no bounds when it comes to the all-star trainer and basketball professional. Any team would be lucky to have him moving forward and quickly learn what an asset he is to any NBA team and community. We foresee big things on the horizon for this baller and any of the young up and coming players who have the instinctive advantage of training with him. Will he ever come back home to Las Vegas? Well, we’ll ask him that and let him tell the tale of what maybe to come. In the meantime, he is thoroughly enjoying his position on the Orlando Magic NBA team.

Meet Tommy Leigh of Vegas One Realty 20
Tommy Leigh was active in the military and was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base at the young and impressionable age of 17. He then got into real estate and when he took over the Vegas One Realty brokerage, he knew that integrity, service and results were a vital and key component to how he wanted to operate in his real estate career. We got the opportunity to ask Tommy some questions that many readers have had on the forefront of their minds in the current real estate market.
RVM: If a buyer goes into a bank and has a particular choice of
funding, what are 2 other reliable sources of funding beyond what the bank may offer?
TL: I always recommend a mortgage broker and not because I
also hold that license. Mortgage brokers have many more lending options and types on loans to choose from than banks typically do. To break it down, coming to me as a mortgage broker gives you the option of upwards of 30-40 different lending intuitions with different types of loans, rates, niche programs you may need. What a mortgage broker does is place your file on a fishing line per-se and they cast it out to see who gives the best rates, service, pricing, turn times and the lowest costs for you and your families’ needs. Another option is private funding or hard money, which a lot of mortgage brokers; such as myself have full access to. A third option is working with a real estate broker that has experience with owner financing, which many individuals recognize as owner will carry (OWC). This means the owner carries the note and you make the payment directly to the owner themselves.
RVM: As a seasoned real estate professional, what pre-qualifications do you like to see from a buyer?
TL: I prefer to see a pre-qualification with either AUS or DU, which means automated underwriting system and desk underwritten approvals. What this reveals is that a loan officer or mortgage broker took the extra step to qualify these buyers and help place them in the best position of purchasing power. With the buyers’ permission, I’ll submit as much information as I can to make sure their offer is accepted.
Brown Ohana Photography
With access to a DU or AUS, I can refer the listing agent to the credit scores and debt to income ratio (DTI). When dealing with loans, the more information we can place upfront while creating the buyer’s story, the better off we are as a team to attain that end goal. If they are cash buyers a simple Proof of Funds (POF) that we can utilize for future offers is also ideal. Proof of Funds (POF) is a letter or documentation that certifies that an individual, institution, or corporation has sufficient funds (money) to complete a transaction. An example of a POF can be a bank statement, a retirement statement, IRA statement or a combination of any of these adding up to the closing amount needed.
RVM: New investors typically ask (1) how can I find good deals, then (2) how can I find funding. That’s it – that’s usually as far as they think. Real Vegas suggests they seek out an expert in the field. What are your thoughts?
TL: I think you’re pretty spot on for most of them, yes. Don’t misunderstand what I mean, as there are many that can and will become really successful. As a brand-new investor with minimal to no experience, I fully recommend a professional real estate broker or agent that specifically has investment experience. That may be a broker with a property management business that buys and manages for his investors, or someone that has experience with flipping investors or flips homes themselves. RVM: What mistakes do you see a lot of first-time buyers make? TL: Not working with the right real estate broker and the right mortgage broker. There needs to be a great fit and chemistry between all three parties with the same end goal of making sure that the first-time buyer is educated, feels protected, and is fully taken care of from start to finish. The most common and also most detrimental mistake I see is working with a part time agent or loan officer who isn’t full-time in the business, who was only used because they are a friend that maybe the buyer works with or knows. This is the biggest investment of your life and you should take that seriously with someone who is invested in the process of buying a home.
That means working with a serious professional with a proven, well-documented and trusted track record. Not someone that works at a department store part time and just passed their exam. Don’t get me wrong, we all have to start somewhere, but it’s important that clients feel confident in their agent. Another avenue is for the new/part-time agent to involve their broker or team leader if they are on a team. For the first-time home buyer, just do your due diligence on whomever you choose to place your trust in.
RVM: Do you see a specific personality for investment in real
estate? Be it flipping or rental investment, do they usually have an appetite for risk if necessary?
TL: In my experience, I’ve seen a multitude of personalities. Whether it be risky flippers, the timid first-timer that saw a flip reality television show and decided this was what they wanted to do, the very calculated and numbers-oriented experienced investor, or the one looking to earn a quick buck type: they all exist in this business. However, the most successful, in my view, are the ones that can change gears and don’t have tunnel vision as well as the numbers-oriented investors. I myself am a mix of heavy risk at times, to super conservative at others; it really depends on the terms of the deal. One thing I see way too much of is the quick cash investors. They are only worried about today and not 10, 15, 20 years from now. Flipping is fun and exciting but buying and holding properties have long term residual income. I personally always recommend a diverse portfolio of both, along with a few other options as well, like a vacation rental or two. Mix it up, and as much as I hate to use a cliché term: don’t put all your eggs in one basket. People have to ride the wave of the market. RVM: Have you seen success when someone purchases a property at a time when most on the market wouldn’t purchase that specific property?
TL: I absolutely have seen this type of success. I have been part of that successful percentile. It’s all about what your goals are along with market education and experience. If we are talking about flips, you need to have vision and a lot of people cannot see that end result. As an investor, I need to base things off numbers, current market trends, and vision. As a real estate broker, working for a client and educating someone who may not have that vision, but wants to either pursue real estate investments, or maybe it’s just someone that is buying a home to redo on their own to live in. You need to help place that picture on a canvas for them. No matter what, at the end of the day, the numbers have to make sense and numbers don’t lie. If they don’t add up, then you need to be willing to walk from a transaction. RVM: With the success you see on TV house flipping shows, what is the hardest part about flipping a house right now? Finding the house to buy, the amount you invest into the flip, the buyer, or something else?
TL: In addition to my residential and commercial real estate companies, I’m also an owner of Bulldog Properties, LLC, which is a house flipping company. I would have to say the hardest part of flipping at this time is the rehab costs are very high at the moment and the conventional supply chain is broken as a result of COVID. RVM: What are the pros and cons in investing in properties in vacation destinations?
TL: Well, this is an easy one for me. My wife and I have a vacation rental in Maui, Hawaii. The biggest con is the unknown and the unexpected hot topic example: a global pandemic; it can crush that market all over the world. We are seeing it right now right in front of us with travel restrictions, mandatory quarantine, job loss, present and future vacation cancellations and the simple fact that some people are just scared to travel. Some typical cons would be allowing others in your home that you don’t know and being able to trust them with your personal investment.
Other cons are natural disasters consisting of but not limited to hurricanes, volcanos, flooding, tornados, avalanches, etc. Another is placing your trust of your investment or eventual retirement home in someone else’s hands. In our situation, we have an on-island contact in case something breaks; we are not there to fix it. Typically, most don’t own a vacation rental within immediate reachable distance; therefore, relying on others is necessary. The major one is being dependent upon the rules, regulation and legislation in which your vacation rental is located. There is no guarantee those regulations won’t change or grandfather you in. With all that, to me the pros greatly outweigh the cons. Someone else is paying for something that you want to own outright someday, in a location that you want to be either part-time or full-time. This is not only exciting and monetarily enticing, but it’s really fun all at the same time. We get to assist others in, what in a lot of cases, is a once in a lifetime trip or experience. We also, when our unit is open, get to stay there at random times of the year, which is amazing.
RVM: Do you find that a lot of investors and/or property owners use their residences for Airbnb?
TL: No, not a lot because most cities don’t allow them. Short term rentals are not legal in unincorporated Clark County and North Las Vegas as of now. Henderson and Las Vegas allow them with restrictions. Historically, most of my investors buy and hold for a long period of time meaning 3-10 years, maybe longer, or they buy and flip and in this case they will hold the property for as little time as possible. RVM: What are your top choices for upgrade options to immediately raise the value of your home?
TL: The typical and accurate answer most people will provide is simple: kitchens and bathrooms. Updating those has the greatest ROI (return on investment). If we want to look more in-depth, let’s assume those are complete. I would make the home more attractive as a whole. Curb appeal is where I would start. It’s the first opportunity to set the tone for a great impression for your prospective buyers. Other options consist of changing that choppy home into a more modern open floor plan that is more sought after. 2 other options: square footage, larger homes equate more value and adding additional living space, or outdoor indoor living spaces for entertaining. UMC CEO Mason Van Houweling Reflects on Career-Defining COVID-19 Response
Through
LEADERSHIP
UMC CEO Mason Van Houweling has faced unprecedented challenges throughout his career, providing the unique experience and skills to support his leadership amid the largest crisis management effort in the hospital’s 90-year history. UMC now stands as a trusted leader in the statewide response to the COVID-19 pandemic, offering life-saving care, comprehensive patient safety protocols and the state’s largest COVID-19 testing center. Since becoming CEO in 2014, Van Houweling has routinely guided UMC through seemingly overwhelming obstacles, promoting financial stability while developing a culture of preparedness and clinical excellence to ensure the best possible outcomes during the community’s greatest times of need. “As Southern Nevada’s community hospital, UMC has a unique responsibility to offer leadership during times of crisis,” Van Houweling said. “UMC is woven into the very fabric of the community we serve, and our team takes tremendous pride in responding to the needs of our friends, neighbors and family members across Southern Nevada.” His tenure as CEO began with a rapid financial transformation, reducing the hospital’s reliance on taxpayer funding while ensuring UMC had the resources necessary to provide the state’s highest level of care. In 2017, he guided UMC’s response to the deadliest mass shooting in modern American
25
history. UMC was fully prepared for this moment, and the hospital’s clinical team members saved every patient who arrived with a pulse. UMC’s response to the October 1 shooting is now recognized as a national benchmark for hospital crisis management, with Van Houweling and his colleagues frequently sharing the lessons they learned to support the crisis planning needs of other hospitals across the nation.
Houweling said. “By significantly expanding Nevada’s COVID-19 testing capacity, our team continues to play a critical role in detecting and preventing new cases of the virus.”
The unique challenges of the past prepared Van Houweling to lead UMC’s comprehensive response during the COVID-19 pandemic. Long before COVID-19 struck Southern Nevada, UMC already had highly detailed crisis response plans, with staff frequently conducting drills to ensure their skills remained sharp. Early in the pandemic, Van Houweling developed the UMC Coronavirus Education and Collaboration forum, bringing together local health care leaders to share detailed information about UMC’s response plan while promoting a collaborative environment.
UMC has also introduced the state’s most comprehensive patient safety and COVID-19 prevention protocols. In May, UMC became the first and only hospital in Nevada to provide universal testing for all admitted patients, significantly improving the hospital’s ability to quickly identify and isolate patients with active COVID-19 infections.
Van Houweling and his colleagues at UMC immediately recognized the importance of providing community members with access to reliable COVID-19 testing. In a matter of weeks, UMC built a second on-campus laboratory dedicated solely to COVID-19 testing. “As a result of the hard work and dedication of our team, UMC now leads the state in COVID-19 testing, offering a capacity of 10,000 tests per day,” Van
UMC now operates multiple large-scale testing sites, offering widespread access to tests at no out-ofpocket cost. UMC is the only hospital in Southern Nevada to provide community COVID-19 testing.
Despite UMC’s overwhelming success in expanding access to testing and introducing the protocols needed to prevent future cases of COVID-19, Van Houweling remains hesitant to accept credit for any of these accomplishments, recognizing the immeasurable contributions of UMC’s dedicated staff. “None of this would have been possible without the men and women working tirelessly on the front lines and behind the scenes at UMC to save and improve lives in Southern Nevada,” he said. “UMC’s world-class team members continue to inspire me every day as they work together to offer valuable hope for our community.”

Subluxated Virus:
How Chiropractic Care Aids in Immunity By: Samuel Hickson
Although chiropractic medicine isn't a cure for the coronavirus, it could certainly help make the body and immune response stronger
ChiropracTED, led by Dr. Ted Sim, realized that although chiropractic medicine isn't a cure for the Coronavirus, it could certainly help make the body and immune response stronger. Dr. Sim, who also serves as the current Vice-President of the Nevada Chiropractic Council, is currently working to help his patients get through this trying time. According to Dr. Sim, most people often think about chiropractors after they have suffered some type of personal injury, such as in a car accident. However, Dr. Sim feels it is essential to know that chiropractic medicine, like most medical modalities, can be used for other purposes. One purpose of chiropractic is to support immune function. Dr. Sim says, “Without getting too heavily involved in the scientific and medical talk about the immune system, here is what we know. We know that COVID-19 and the fears around the virus can create a great deal of stress on the body. We know from the medical research that stress impacts the immune system. We also know that chiropractic medicine can help with making the body stronger to fight off the stressors of the environment.” Dr. Sim’s comments underscore a large and growing body of medical research that examines the impact of spinal manipulation on the immune response. While the research is scant, consistently, there is evidence that because of the inherent principle of chiropractic medicine to work with the body to heal itself, chiropractic medicine, through the use of spinal manipulations can help with improving the functionality of the immune response. As Dr.

Luis Marmolejo, also known as Lou Love and Lou the Barber is a really genuine man. He started cutting his
own hair in high school and from there started cutting friends and family’s hair as well. He says, “well maybe I was not the best back then, but I did ok.” His Grandfather owned his own barber shop in Mexico before relocating to California, so Lou felt it was in his blood. After Lou graduated high school, he searched for a barber school in Las Vegas and found none. He didn’t want to go to cosmetology school, so he got into real estate. Fast forward to 2008, he was a real estate agent who had done very well for himself and he put all of his eggs into one basket which was 3 investment properties that he believed were going to bring him to financial freedom. As we all know in 2008 the housing market crashed, and it challenged Lou to reevaluate life and he realized that his heart was no longer in real estate anymore because of all that he lost. He took some time to do some serious soul searching which led him back to his dreams of becoming a barber. He started looking back into it and discovered that the 1st barber school in Las Vegas had opened in 2008. He went in for a tour of the school and with his last $10,000 to his name, he faithfully took a leap of faith and signed up to start barber school in January 2009. After 10 months of classes, he finished barber school in October of 2009. “The best investment I ever made was betting on myself! I’m not going to lie; it hasn’t been easy, and I was very lucky to have some great mentors that I was able to talk to through those hard days. In 2016, I finally felt comfortable and financially secure to open up my own shop after bouncing around to a few other great shops earlier in my career. It wasn’t easy in the beginning and I had questioned myself many times on why not just rent a booth and take care of my clients without all of the responsibility of owning my own shop, but now 4 years later, I wouldn’t change a thing. The Barber Lounge is my baby and has been my biggest achievement.” Lou says he has many more aspirations he will pursue in this industry, so be sure to stay tuned for the moves he will assuredly make. If you want the best real barbers in Las Vegas, contact Lou and his crew at The Barber Lounge and book your appointment today. You won’t be disappointed and quite frankly, you will likely never want to go anywhere else! The Barber Lounge 702.431.1099 1123 S Rainbow Las Vegas, NV 89146

LOCAL LEADING BUSINESS OWNERS LAUNCH A HOCKEY COMPLEX & NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION
L 04
ocal leading business owners Jason and Stacey Laricchia of The Birthday Suit, with 3 convenient locations have some exciting news on their all new ventures; including “The Yard Hockey Training Center” and “The Pass the Puck Foundation”.
The Yard is a 10,000 square foot training center that will allow the hockey players of Las Vegas the ability to advance their skills when they do not have access to their local rink. The Yard will feature the Can-Ice synthetic ice surface and house a mini-rink, goalie pad, and 5 shooting lanes. The goal of The Yard is to give coaches and players a chance to connect away from their rinks and get as much practice as possible to help grow the talent of players coming out of Las Vegas. The Pass the Puck Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by 3 local hockey families. “Our mission statement is ‘to assist local hockey families towards a common goal," states Laricchia. He adds: “Hockey is an expensive sport and sometimes, situations arise where a player may miss out on an opportunity to play in a tournament or high-level clinic because of financial reasons. We want to see the sport of hockey grow in Las Vegas and also see the talent level coming from Las Vegas rise. To be able to help families with expenses related to travel hockey or house leagues means the world to us. We have also chosen to assist the Vegas Golden Knights youth sled hockey program as well. These families do so much for their children and help in the community and we want to make sure they have all the equipment they need and the strain of travel expenses for tournaments is lessened.” The 2 ventures will obviously be able to work hand in hand with donations of rink time to sled program practices and also players who Pass the Puck is assisting.

MEET THE TALENTED ATTORNEY AND MUSICIAN
Keith Galliher Jr. Sometimes you go through life without really knowing where your talents are. In my case, I was committed to be an attorney from a very young age. I worked my way through college and law school. I eagerly began my legal career in Las Vegas in 1974 as an associate attorney with Lionel, Sawyer, Collins and Wartman. This law firm has since disbanded. I left the Lionel firm and joined the Clark County Public Defender’s Office where I practiced criminal law for approximately 1 ½ years. I then went into private practice and have been in private law practice since that time. For the last 30 plus years, I have specialized in Plaintiff’s personal injury representing victims of car crashes, slip and falls, medical malpractice, and negligent security cases. In the later months of 2008, the Great Recession of that time was rearing its ugly head. Christmas was approaching. I was searching for a suitable gift for my beautiful wife, Linda. She had received her share of jewelry, furs, and gift certificates. For some unknown reason, I wanted to give her something different that Christmas perhaps realizing that the next several years would be a deeply depressing financial time for everyone. Clarence Collins is the founding member of Little Anthony and the Imperials and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is also an excellent music producer and my good friend. So I called Clarence in early November of 2008 and told him about my desire to sing a song for Linda as a Christmas gift. After he stopped laughing, he graciously agreed to produce my song. When I arrived at the studio on December 1, 2008, I was understandably nervous despite the fact that I have participated in numerous jury trials during my legal career. Clarence put his arm around me, told me not to worry, and we embarked on my first studio recording. The song was Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” It was one of Linda’s favorites, so I was determined to gift her with that song for Christmas. The recording went well and both Clarence and the sound engineer were impressed.
I took Linda to dinner that evening and played the final mix of my song for her in my CD player in my car. After the first three or four bars, she remarked “that doesn’t sound like Eric Clapton.” When I informed her that it was not Eric Clapton, but in fact, her husband, the tears flowed. She had never heard me sing. That first song led me to record Elton John’s “Blue Eyes” approximately a year and a half later at the request of my daughter. Linda has blue eyes. Up until the time I recorded that song, I thought I was done with recording music after recording “Wonderful Tonight.” As it turns out, I was absolutely wrong about my music recording future. Over the past 11 plus years, I have recorded 70 songs. To date, I have won 75 international music awards. I’m just finishing my 10th album and all my previous albums have been award winners. The genre of the songs I have recorded range from Rock, Pop, Reggae, Country, Funk/Fusion, R&B, Soul to Americana and everything in between. My songs are played on music stations all over the world and can be found on Spotify and iHeartRadio. Additionally, my music can be located on iTunes, CD Baby, Muzak, Amazon Music, Google Music, Deezer, and other music websites throughout the world. My recording of “Ain’t No Sunshine” has occupied one of the top 4 positions on the Niger, Africa easy listening chart for almost 5 years. This song was number 1 for 58 weeks. My musical journey has not ended. Clarence and I are currently recording new music along with our arranger, Pat Thrall. Most recently, we have been creating and writing our own material. If you google Keith Galliher Jr. Music YouTube, you will find approximately 15 music videos we have made. They do not feature exotic locations or 20 backup dancers. The videos are clean, simple, and honest just like our songs. Many thanks to Real Vegas for allowing me to write my musical story and express my great joy at discovering something so wonderful this late in my life.

Rock Star Buries the Hatchet and Releases New album
“Hallelujah”
The Show Must Go On
Maryann Cotton is releasing his new album, which was officially released on July 3, 2020, entitled ''Hallelujah. This album is the most personal album Maryann has ever written. It gets close to the character Maryann Cotton, the ups and downs of the music industry, touring life across Europe and the United States and drama in his private life with personal demons - all spread over 8 new songs. Maryann Cotton (28) born Jackie Patino, grew up in Ballerup and became known throughout the country back in 2006 when he came in 2nd in the show Star Search. He subsequently played all over the country, weekend after weekend over a 2-year period. In 2009 after appearing in several TV commercials and TV series, TV3 ”Lulu and Leon” he decided to create his alter ego and return to music as the stage character Maryann Cotton. His life took a huge turn when he was discovered in 2012 by American Producer and Hitmaker Dick Wagner as a writer. Dick Wagner wrote hits for Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Guns’ N Roses, KISS, Frank Sinatra, Meat Loaf, etc. Soon after, Maryann traveled to New York and started writing music for a concept album with the hitmaker who opened the door to rock star friendships from, Michael Jackson’s musicians to John Lennon’s producer and the rock legend Alice Cooper, who ended up writing 3 songs for Maryann Cotton. Dick Wagner wanted Maryann Cotton to move to Hollywood, California, where the album was to be recorded. Everything was made readily available to the Danish rock singer, from a huge house in Hollywood to his own car to drive. Wagner assembled a team of rock A-list musicians and producers to record his albums.

“I was living the life. I was 23 and worked with all my greatest heroes every time we met with record labels or producers, and planned recordings for my album, it was always names like Johnny Depp to Steven Tyler who were always mentioned at the table. They had plans for me to record music and make movies in the US. “I was well prepared and had the best team behind me. I got instructions and guidance from every angle, every day over the phone and email.” Maryann Cotton’s album was completed in the spring of 2014, but 3 weeks before the final recordings, 71-year-old producer Dick Wagner died of pneumonia following a heart surgery and the project and album went down the drain. “It was a hard blow! A lot was expected of me and it took a lot mentally to work with such big names. I was on top of my game every single day. There was always something new for me to do in my inbox when I woke up every morning. I gave my life and career away and left it all to my producer. We built a very close bond to one another, and from one second to the next, the rug was torn out from under me. I lost not only my producer but also my best friend through 2 intense years. It was really like getting a bucket of cold water right in my face. I saw my dream disappear before my eyes.” “ I had lost hope over a period of time, and it was difficult for me to start all over again without my mentor. ” “ I gathered my band and chose to try my luck in Denmark and struggled through 2015 and 2016 to break through in Europe and the Danish market, with no success. We played at small clubs in Europe and everything was disorganized. It was mostly about alcohol and girls. Fighting battles became part of being on tour. I searched for an adrenaline kick every single day and ended up in a hospital in Latvia after being smashed over the head with a bottle at a nightclub in Riga. I was lying on a hospital bed, being rolled down a long hallway in an old hospital. No one could speak English and I thought for a moment that I was dead. 6 hours after, I was released with various bruises and stitches. I was on the stage again in a new city and it was just another night out.” “After touring abroad and in Denmark, I realized that it was not the right time for Maryann Cotton. The Danish and European scene was not ready for my image and band.” During a meeting in Copenhagen, I told my band that I would go back to the U.S. and start all over again. There was no doubt with the rest of the band, they were all for that idea. We had a tour set up in large parts of the U.S. and in January 2017 we traveled to Los Angeles without any expectations. We quickly noticed a completely different mentality. The first day we arrived in Hollywood we were constantly stopped by people at gas stations, restaurants, and on the streets. People were stopping in their cars to take pictures of us and with us. It was really
overwhelming! We were just a rock group from Denmark. We lived in a camper van for 3 weeks in Los Angeles, but we were quickly accepted and partied at luxurious hotels and nightclubs with other bands and actors every day before our first show on the Sunset Strip. We played at the legendary rock club Whiskey A Go-Go in Hollywood where all our great heroes started their careers. Bands like The Doors, Mötley Crüe, Guns N Roses, Van Halen, and Alice Cooper. It was a great evening for the whole band. I clearly remember sitting and doing my makeup, getting ready for our show in the same dressing room where all of my idols have been sitting in with the same dreams. 10 minutes before show time, the promoter came by our dressing room and told us that the show was sold out. Standing on stage in mid-Hollywood and playing our first show in front of a sold-out audience was absolutely crazy.”
louder than the music. Our drummer had a serious alcohol problem, and no one was able to communicate with him. I had mentally reached rock bottom and had no courage to complete the rest of the trip. We finally reached Los Angeles and the trip was over. I saw Chera again after a month and I felt at home. She was what I needed. I chose to stay in the U.S. and said goodbye to the band. I knew it was over. My guitarist Sebastian Sly gave our drummer a clear message and kicked him out of the band at LAX airport. I stayed in Los Angeles with Chera for a week and then we went back to Las Vegas. I needed to get back on track and she gave me safety from rock’ n roll life. Alice Cooper came to town and played at The Palms and I was asked if I would make a guest appearance with his band. I played ”Eighteen” and “School” “Out” and it was the last gig I did for a year.”
“ We continued the trip and we were able to get anything and everything we wanted. We had many girls at our concerts, and we partied every night in a new city and state. The band got bigger and bigger and we quickly built a reputation all over the U.S. but without knowing it the egos got bigger too. We lived the lifestyle “sex, drugs and rock’ n roll,’ forgetting ourselves and it eventually became hard and tough to make it work. There was a lot of quarreling and jealousy in the band and we forgot to enjoy the tour during the last few weeks. We ended the tour where we started and were back in California. We were on the red carpet in Los Angeles partying with a lot of girls that night, but we were saturated and tired and not on par with each other. 12 hours before we were supposed to be at LAX airport we were in Beverly Hills, we were having serious quarrels with each other. We were all frustrated and it ended by the band breaking up the last night of the tour. We couldn’t handle the sight of each other and ultimately flying home separately.”
“Chera and I became a couple in the summer of 2018, and I took a break from the music for a year and moved here permanently.”
The show must go.... “I should have said stop and take a break, but the show must go on; so, I made some changes to the band and we returned to the U.S. the following year and toured. We had a bigger budget and a bigger crew, but it was never the same with the new crew. It was the summer of 2018 and we had a few days off in Las Vegas before the tour started. We sat at a small sports bar and watched the World Cup, when suddenly my father Hal Patino (who is also my bass player) got up and said he couldn’t breathe. I tried to keep him conscious but suddenly, he fell into my arms and was on the ground unconscious for about 20 seconds. Fortunately, I was with a girl (Chera Leigh, former Playboy model); she called for an ambulance while I was trying to give my dad CPR. The ambulance arrived quickly, and he was rolled on to the stretcher and into the ambulance. I sat in the front seat and on our way to the hospital one doctor told me that I should be glad he was alive. He went into cardiac arrest and his blood pressure was very high, 140/90. He was hospitalized in Las Vegas and we had to cancel the first week of the tour. I kept it a secret for my family back home in Denmark until I knew more about his condition. SHIT! A shitty start to our USA trip, it couldn’t get any worse. My dad was hospitalized, our entire tour was canceled before we even started, and the rest of the band and crew didn’t know whether they were coming or going. I sat in a hotel suite doing press interviews. I was the one responsible for the canceled shows. Fortunately, Chera offered her help and took care of all the calls and communications with the hospital for me. She stayed with me and drove me to the hospital every single day so I could visit my dad. It meant everything to me, because we didn’t really know each other.” “A week later I said goodbye to Chera and the band and I took the tour bus to Canada in hopes of resuming the trip. On the way we stopped at the hospital where I said goodbye to my dad and told him I was hoping to see him soon so we could play some rock’ n roll. We had a 48-hour drive to Canada from Vegas and 3 days after we arrived my dad was discharged from the hospital. He flew in that afternoon and we played the first show that evening and resumed the tour. After 10 days of hospitalization, the same day he was discharged from the hospital, the old man was on the stage again! Wow! He's a tough nail, and a real rocker! However, it was with mixed emotions that we continued the trip. I was mentally exhausted and had lost a lot. I was mostly skin and bones. I worried a lot and was nervous about whether my father was stable enough to travel and perform the concerts. We played for thousands of people during the rest of the tour and did some outdoor festival shows in the month of July. But I was not myself and every time I looked at my stage clothes, I got nauseous. I couldn’t bear to be Maryann Cotton. I felt a huge void and I was missing something… Chera! I kept in touch with Chera and talked to her every day, I just had to see her again. We were swimming in offers from groupies after all our concerts all over the U.S., but the desire was gone, and I only had one girl in my head. The last destination of the tour was Los Angeles and we had 2 weeks left. I called Chera and asked if she would come to see our last show in Hollywood and we agreed to meet after the tour.” “The new line up in the band did not work and alcohol began to speak
“My decision to move here did not fall into good standings back in Denmark. My ex-girlfriend chose to dig into my past and sold stories that I had been unfaithful to her to the Danish media. Drama and gossip broke loose and I read stories about myself every week. Chera and I got hundreds of hate messages from my ex- girlfriend’s followers on social media. We had just become a couple and I really felt sorry for her having to constantly read bad shit about me in the press while also receiving vicious comments from groups of people in Denmark. I had to explain to her about my past life as a rock singer and the price you sometimes have to pay. Fortunately, Chera is ice cold and professional and has handled all the drama in my life with a stiff arm. However, my family in Denmark was more affected by it all and being so far apart in another country did not help. Especially my mother. But, as I always say, I’m sorry that I’ve hurt some people with my actions and there are many things I have done that I am not particularly proud of. Unfortunately, I cannot change what has happened. I have learned from my mistakes and have changed my lifestyle.” “In late 2019 and almost a year later, I started missing the music and playing concerts again, but I still had no solid band. My girlfriend told me to man up and bury the hatchet, so I went back to Denmark and met with my old original drummer. We had not talked to or seen each other for 3 years since the breakup in Hollywood, so I was excited to see him. I wondered what it would feel like looking each other in the eyes again. We met in an apartment in Copenhagen and the chemistry was flowing. It felt like we were back on stage again and we were all ready for a reunion. We were friends again and put the past behind us. Out record label organized a photoshoot and it was officially announced that we were back. Offers from large parts of Europe and the U.S. came in and we started 2020 with our largest North America tour to date. The spark was back, the band sounded better than ever and the fans were wild. We got great reviews across the board and it was a pleasure to perform as Maryann Cotton again.”
My New Album “Hallelujah” “Life is like an emotional roller coaster and full of ups and downs, but for me it” been worth it. My new album is about many of the experiences I have had throughout my life and career and living up to an image of good and evil. Usually we write lyrics and music for the character Maryann Cotton. I don’t see him as myself but as a fictional character who only exists and lives on stage, so writing my new album has been a little different.” “When the album was finished, I was getting cold feet when I thought it was getting too close to me and not the character. Until 1 day I had an epiphany; the reason I am where I am today is because of Maryann Cotton. It has almost been a form of self-therapy to write all the new songs. This is clearly the best album I have ever made. I’m looking forward to the fans hearing it.” Maryann Cotton moved in 2018 with his girlfriend Chera Leigh. Today, they live in a beautiful home in Las Vegas. Chera is a lingerie model and ambassador for the American fitness brand The Sweat store. They have been together for 2 years on July 1, 2020. Fans can find and follow Maryann Cotton on social media and keep up to date with the rock star on his website: maryanncotton.net @MaryannCottonOfficial

Winter is coming! Make the Most of Magical Mountain Days in Las Vegas’s High Country
By Stephanie For
In Las Vegas, winter’s majesty is tucked away in Lee Canyon, there for the taking when people are ready to pull on their boots and head north on US 95 to the high country. Many native Las Vegans talk about being snow-suited up as a kid, and learning to ski or snowboard at Lee Canyon. Since it cranked up its first lift, a T-bar, in 1964, Lee Canyon has created a lot of local skiers and snowboarders. And that hasn’t changed. Its youth programs, Mountaineers and Freeride, recently had to be expanded due to demand. The local youth stoke is so high that the mountain also launched skills and race development programs for more advanced kids. As Las Vegas has grown, Lee Canyon has kept pace. Today, 2 quad chairs, Rabbit Peak and Blue Bird, and one triple chair, Sherwood, whisk people from the base area of 8,510 feet more than 1,000 feet in elevation so they can access 27 trails with an average of 129 inches of snow annually. And if you’re ski legs are a little rusty, it’s no big deal. The idea of a day-long ski school lesson isn’t for everyone, especially not wild spirited Nevadans. In 2014, Lee Canyon dumped the industry’s old school model and launched its Comp Coaching program, designed for beginners or those who need a quick refresher. Lee Canyon instructors work with people one-on-one, give quick tips, or do a short 10-minute skill review, free of charge. Jim Seely, Lee Canyon’s director of marketing, explains that after one-on-one time, many people opt to hire a private instructor or join a group lesson while others carry on with their day. “When people feel more confident, they relax and enjoy the experience more. That’s a big win,” he says.
SKI/RIDE AND CHILL Last winter saw the addition of Hillside Lodge, a 10,000 square foot, two-story building that boasts a ski-in, ski-out

rté bar, a coffee house, Brewin Burro, and meeting space. Hillside’s heated outdoor seating makes lunch from The Bighorn Grill even tastier. And, with sweeping views of the mountain, it’s Las Vegas’ most scenic happy hour spot.
SNOWTUBING Las Vegas families love whooshing down the mountain on an inner tube. The snow tubing area at Lee Canyon is separate from the ski/snowboard terrain and is void of stumps and hazards. Open weekends and holidays, kids must be at least three feet tall to join in on the fun. Sessions are $30.
TAKE A HIKE With a snowshoeing trail at Old Mill Picnic Area, local snowshoers love to unplug in the pines either alone or with friends. And since snowshoeing burns more than double the calories of walking on a flat surface, it’s a great workout. Snowshoe rentals are $10.
BEFORE YOU GO There is no gas on the mountain. Chains or snow tires are sometimes required. Lift tickets should be purchased in advance and online for a 35 percent savings. Season passes, including the pay-as-you-go Ride Local Card, are available. Open daily, visit www.leecanyonlv.com for details.

GENDER EQUALITY
By TrinaMarie Shaw
Even though many men are facing job losses and conflicting demands, research says women do three times as much domestic work as men. That means women are more likely to be called on to look after children if businesses open while schools remain closed, handling online schooling, and possibly delaying their return to the paid labor force or putting their cape on being the superwoman with the intentions to handle it all. A major problem with having a “superwoman syndrome” will eventually experience burnout and the ideology has negative consequences on overall health and well-being. For me, it was during the pandemic when I found out that my husband is a wonderful cook. I was still working as an essential worker in real estate and during many cases, he rose to the occasion. I recently nominated him as one of the most magnificent men because in my eyes the man that is willing to help out at home as he would at work deserves a crown. A man that recognizes that he has more time on his hand and steps up to fulfill a role is a man worth honoring. I asked my husband a few personal questions about gender equality and here is what he had to say. TrinaMarie: Do you think there is gender inequality in today’s times? Rich: Yes, we still have a way to go. Women are still not treated equally in the workplace regarding pay or promotional and leadership opportunities. The women’s movement is good and hopefully, someday it will get better. In the home, women usually put more expectations on themselves to do the housework and men could help out more and there should be a conversation if that’s not the case. TrinaMarie: How do you recommend women communicate more and request help from their partner? Rich: If a woman works just as hard as her partner, there needs to be a conversation about creating more equal support in the home. You have to talk about it. Someone’s perspective of reality is different until you can have a discussion to work it out. What men understand can be completely different than what the woman expects; and vice versa. TrinaMarie: What issues do you think men face with juggling marriage and work- life balance? Rich: Men put a lot of stress on being the provider, head of the household, and provide security. When anything happens they feel like they are the ones that have to fix it. It’s a lot of pressure placed on men. It’s interesting how each gender places their expectations on themselves causing stress that can become overwhelming especially in partnerships and marriages. No wonder why during the pandemic and these uncertain times, domestic violence and divorce rates are increasing. My husband makes some great points. The reasons for the inequality in the homes are not entirely clear but may be tied to deep-seated societal views about what is expected of a wife and mother, reinforced by personal and peers’ expectations about themselves. Research indicates moms and or wives put housework ahead of their self-care and sleep because they feel personally accountable for providing a home for their families. Never let expectations, assumptions, or society tell you what each role should do. Both partners must communicate and come to an amicable agreement to share in responsibilities. Check out TrinaMarie’s blog or listen to her podcast on iTunes, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Anchor, and more to learn more about mental health and also what you can do to help eradicate the stigma.

DURING COVID
BY ANDREA DUPPER
I don’t watch certain genres of movies for a reason. I don’t think you can really classify them as a genre, but I try not to watch… movies like Contagion, The Day After Tomorrow, Geostorm, anything with a huge natural disaster component or humanity altering disease. I don’t watch these types of movies, because they give me anxiety. In my mind, these are all perfectly plausible happenings.
At the beginning of the pandemic, there was a flood of articles on the Internet about “using this time to better yourself.” Then later came the articles about “making sure you practice self-care.” Both topics were accurate. The problem with both, is telling anyone what or how they should be feeling. Each of us is going through a unique experience, but we’re all going through this “together”.
On March 18, 2020, we were hurled into one of these movies! For several weeks, I lived with bouts of fear, uncertainty, calm, resilience, strength, anxiety and depression. My emotions ran the gambit every day, all day. I did my best to keep my news consumption down to a minimum. I put people on snooze on Facebook and tried to limit any time on social media.
Here’s my advice, for what it’s worth… YOU DO YOU! If you need to take a mental day off work, because the world has become too dark for you to deal with. Do it! If you need to take a hike to the top of Red Rock, do it (make sure you know how to hike and pack correctly for the insane heat!) You need to snuggle up with your kids because you fear for what their future could look like, do it! This is all new for all of us. The only thing that is certain, like most of the time, is that each day, there is change.
Our worlds were quickly filled with hate, anger, uncertainty, death and destruction. Parents suddenly became teachers, living rooms became classrooms, Dining room tables doubled as office furniture during the day as offices closed and people started working from home. Zoom stock went through the roof, after their platform became safer!
And lastly, be kind to each other, be kind to yourself, your family, strangers, the grocery store workers, who have also been essential. Kindness is essential to your Health and it doesn’t cost you a thing!

The Real Vegas Magazine team had the amazing opportunity of attending the Pray for Shay parade in support of Officer Shay Mikalonis, who was shot in the face near the Circus Circus at a protest this past June. Fleets of friends, family and supporters participated, and you could see lines of cars for miles as they made their way to UMC where the Officer was still recovering. It comes to no surprise to us that we in fact have many mutual friends of Shay’s.
The outpouring of love and support was incredible to see and the way our community came together to pray for his recovery. The “Injured Police Officers Fund” is raising money for Officer Shay Mikalonis.
