Farewell from Rob It’s come to that time of the year where I am consistently making these end of year emotional speeches. But this is it, my last ever one, and I couldn’t put into words how much of a fantastic year 2015-16 has been. As President it’s part of my job to praise and commend my members of the SA and it’s easy to say this year’s team have done a fantastic job. The past two years in this role have been pretty emotional and I couldn’t have done it without any of you! I’ve made some amazing memories here at Reaseheath, too many to list all of them! I just hope you all utilise your Reaseheath experience to the maximum, get involved in all the RAG events possible and raise lots of money, party hard at the socials, fulfil your dreams - make memories. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my time here at Reaseheath and in everything I’ve done. Rob Sparkes SA President

Having been my first experience of being a member of the Student Association and becoming a part of documenting your student life, bringing the latest news and updates of events to you it’s something I would never have wanted to change! We’ve had a hectic, fun and successful year, with spectacular RAG events from our Moulin Rouge Ball, the Hadrian’s Wall walk, Family Festival and Open Farm Sunday to fabulous socials and the unbelievable efforts from our sporting students.

I just want to say a massive thankyou to everyone that’s supported me in the making of Coverage and thankyou to the fabulous people that have featured in the magazine over the past academic year! That’s me done with my Reaseheath experience and it’s been an unforgettable three years. Thank you and all the best with the future! Sam Field

been possible to reach such an amazing total of £26, 361.25. The pictures following aren’t enough

to justify the efforts and success of this year, but hopefully a few words from our SA RAG Chair

Dan Lee will summarise it for us!

A few words from Dan

If you don’t know me already, my name is Dan Lee and I have been on the SA for the last academic year. Since taking on the role as RAG Chair, we have had an amazing few months raising money for RAG at Reaseheath Family Festival, Open Farm Sunday and many other events. I am pleased to announce that we have raised more money this year than any previous years! This wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of all of the SA and the generous contributions from all staff and students. Recently I have been appointed as the President for the 2016-17 academic year. I look forward to continuing my work for the college alongside the SA and the Student Services team. It’s been an absolute pleasure working alongside Rob over the last year and I’d like to wish him all the best on behalf of the SA for his future plans. We have got a lot of amazing events planned already for our Freshers weeks so we hope to see you all there. If anyone is interested in joining the SA don’t hesitate to contact me or anybody in the bar office.

A beginner’s guide to self-employment Choose self-employment?

Thinking of starting your own business? There’s plenty of encouragement from the government for people to become self-employed and at first it seems attractive, especially if you have recently left college or university. Although one of the main attractions of becoming selfemployed is no longer having to work for somebody else, there are several disadvantages you should consider. These include not being certain of having a regular income, having to arrange your own sick pay and pension and probably having to work long hours.

Finance

As a self-employed person, you will need enough money to live on as well as money to start up the business and keep it going. You may be able to get money from the following sources: •

family or friends

grants from charities or trusts

loans from banks and building societies.

Budgeting is an important skill for anyone who’s self-employed, to get a good picture of your incomings and outgoings.

Book-keeping and accounting

It is extremely important that accurate and detailed records of the business are kept. You may be able to keep your own books or employ a bookkeeper or accountant, but if you are trading as a limited company you will need the help of an accountant.

Income tax

As a self-employed person, you will be responsible for paying income tax on your earnings and will usually need the help of an accountant. There are special tax reliefs and allowances which self-employed people can claim. If you are newly self-employed, you must register with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). You can get more information about income tax for self-employed people from the HMRC website at www.hmrc.gov.uk or by calling the HMRC Newly Self-Employed Helpline on 0300 200 3504.

National insurance contributions

As a self-employed person you may have to pay national insurance contributions for yourself and any employees. Whether you have to pay contributions for yourself, and if so what type, depends on how much you earn. Whether contributions have to be paid for any employees depends on what they earn. The payment of contributions will affect the benefits a person can claim in the future. You can find more information about national insurance contributions for self-employed people on the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website at www.hmrc.gov.uk. HMRC also provides a National Insurance Self-employed Helpline for telephone enquiries on 0300 200 3505. Who can give further advice:

Banks

The services offered by banks vary greatly and so do the fees they charge. Some banks have special teams who handle business accounts. They may also have useful information for start-up businesses. It’s a good idea to shop around for business banking services, for example, by using a financial comparison website.

Chambers of Commerce

A Chamber of Commerce is a local network of businesses. It can provide information, advice and training to businesses in your area. Most give free advice to members, but charge for services to non-members. Some Chambers of Commerce serve particular ethnic minorities.

GOV.UK

GOV.UK has information on setting up and running a business on its website at www.gov.uk.

Local enterprise agencies (England, Wales and Northern Ireland only)

Local enterprise agencies give free general advice and support to small businesses. Training courses are also available, which are often free. Details of local enterprise agencies are available from the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies.

From the Principal Dear All What a fantastic year we have had together as staff and students at Reaseheath especially with the great Student Association that has led the way on so many initiatives. Your association has represented you both internally and externally in a professional and energetic manner. They have been involved in numerous management decisions, appointments of staff and meetings with governors and represented the student body excellently. As the academic year has drawn to a close many of you will have undertaken your final exams and submitted your last assignments and essays, and will now be enjoying a summer break before returning to your studies or moving into your chosen career. Before the term ended we had a chance to celebrate together at our wonderful awards ceremonies and at the student summer ball, which was a superb evening. I hope you enjoyed these memorable events as they are a fitting way to celebrate the end of an academic year. Finally, I wish you all a great summer and hope that you will have achieved your full potential, thoroughly enjoyed your time with us and successfully completed your programmes of study. I also hope to welcome you back next year if you are returning to study and if not, I wish you all the best for your future studies and career. Best wishes Meredydd David Principal

Celebration time for successful Reaseheath students Our annual awards ceremony celebrated the success of 1235 Further Education (FE) students who have achieved industry recognised qualifications and skills this year. Our students, from across the UK and abroad, are preparing for careers in land-based and related industries such as agriculture, animal or equine management, agricultural engineering, motor vehicle technology, business, environmental conservation, fish management, forestry, food manufacture, floristry, horticulture, construction, public services or in leisure industries such as sport and outdoor adventure. Four outstanding students received overall college awards: Kaitlinn Schaap, Level 3 Diploma in Horse Management student, was chosen as the student making the best contribution to college life. Tom Allen, BSc Wildlife, Conservation and Ecology undergraduate, was selected for making the best all round contribution to the college. Emmalise Mills, Level 2 Diploma in Agriculture student, was singled out for personal qualities. The Beacon Trophy, celebrating excellence, was presented to Katie Gibson who has just completed her Foundation Degree in Rural Events Management.
