· 2018 — Foundation Degree in Agriculture

· 2019 — BSc (Hons) Agricultural Business Management

· 2021 — Foundation Degree in Bakery and Patisserie Technology

· 2021 — MSc Ruminant Nutrition (Harper Adams University) Job title Dairy Herd Manager “Although I have a non-farming background, I’m passionate about dairy cows and their welfare. Throughout my six years at Reaseheath I was encouraged to develop my own ideas and further my knowledge, and I also began working at the dairy farm where I am now a manager and involved in technical upgrading and future planning. I’m keen to do research which is useful to farmers, so I studied antibiotic resistance to mastitis for my BSc dissertation and presented my findings at the British Undergraduate Research Conference. 22 | UCR PROSPECTUS 2023

Studying for a Master’s degree along with managing the herd had its challenges, but I learned how to work independently at Reaseheath and that definitely helped. There are certainly plenty of different career avenues available to me in the future.”

Job title(s) Joint owners of The Northern Cakery Co., Lancashire “We both wanted to run our own businesses and now we’ve achieved the dream! We opened our cake and coffee shop in November 2021 and we’re loving the independence of creating our cake range and the buzz of seeing trade grow. We both ran successful online cake businesses while we were undergraduates, so we combine running our shop with meeting orders for pre-existing and new online customers. Forming a partnership and being able to share ideas really helps! The creative and business skills we gained at college and university gave us the confidence to take the project forward. The additional professional certificates we achieved have been essential, as has the advice on business registration, administration and marketing.”

Nathan Webster

Charlotte Daniels

· 2017 — Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture

· 2015 — BSc (Hons) Zoo Management (First Class)

· 2020 — BSc (Hons) Landscape Architecture

· 2021 — MSc Primate Conservation (Distinction) (Oxford Brookes University)

• British Association of Landscape Industries award 2019 • Pro Landscaper’s 30 Under 30: The Next Generation 2021 Job title Landscape Architect, Wright Landscapes Ltd “Landscape Architecture isn’t just about designing beautiful spaces, it’s about designing and overseeing projects which meet the needs of people and the environment. Recent events have shown how important trees and plants are for mental and physical health. As well as creating personal gardens for clients I am interested in cityscapes, where you can be creative while making cities greener, healthier and more sustainable. I owe a lot to the five years I spent at Reaseheath – I gained so much confidence in my own ability. My diploma prepared me for my future life and my degree taught me how to prepare designs from client briefs. Being part of the student design and build team for Reaseheath’s show gardens at RHS Tatton Flower Show was great experience.”

Job title Project Assistant Intern with the United Nations Environment Programme Great Ape Survival Partnership (UNEP-GRASP) “I’ve always been passionate about primates, particularly great apes, and feel incredibly lucky that I have the opportunity to work with them. Following my UCR degree I accepted two seasonal jobs at UK wildlife parks before volunteering at a chimpanzee rescue centre in Cameroon. This led to me working for the primate care team at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, Dorset, for four years as a chimpanzee caregiver. I now have an exciting internship in Nairobi. UNEP-GRASP is a partnership of governments, research institutions, United Nations agencies, conservation organisations and the private sector, formed to ensure the long-term survival of wild gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos. Eventually I’d love to work for a global conservation organisation, helping to implement government policies, or I may enter academia.” IT’S IN OUR NATURE | 23

Types of courses At UCR, we offer a variety of different courses and routes to gain your higher education qualifications. Here are some of the options.

We offer several types of degrees, so you are sure to find one that is right for you

Bachelor’s Degrees — BSc (Hons) or BA (Hons) Bachelor’s degrees take three years to complete (if studying full-time). Students on bachelor’s degrees learn complex concepts, and how to critique and analyse them at a high level. You will also develop your research and investigative skills, as well as your transferable skills to take into a workplace context. Bachelor’s students usually complete a dissertation at final year. Foundation Degree — FdSc or FdA Foundation degrees take two years to complete and are slightly more vocationallyfocused than a bachelor’s degree. They tend to offer technically-driven content and focus on employability skills through work-based learning modules. Bachelor’s Degree Top-Ups — BSc (Hons) Top-Up Upon successful completion of a foundation degree, students are offered the option of completing a final ‘top-up’ year of study, to obtain a full honour’s degree. Higher National Diplomas — HND A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a vocationally-focused higher education qualification that is equivalent to a foundation degree and which takes two years to complete.
